Grammar to the Rescue The other day I was talking with one of my colleagues. He asked me a question why is it important to learn grammar. I suddenly had in my mind the passage I read in the publication of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). This passage explained that although we do not learn grammar to talk and whatever we speak is natural and does not involve any efforts from our side to talk according to grammatical rules. However, it is the phenomena through which we are able to understand the language itself. In short grammar is the language of language itself. Many people (wrongly) assume that grammar relates to the correctness or incorrectness of the language or written piece of papers such as essay papers. Although grammar does involve usage of appropriate terms and techniques, it has a broader concept in which it tends to explain any language not just correcting the mistakes. Furthermore, let’s assume you want to learn a new language. In order to excel in that language, it is important that you are aware of the grammar of the language. Hence they are able to speak the language even better than the native speakers. All these points show why grammar is important in today’s competitive environment.
