The 21st Prix HSBC pour la Photographie nominated Diane Dufour as 2016 artistic advisor, who proposed 12 photographers to the members of the Executive Committee "The work of eleven nominates for the 2016 Prix HSBC pour la Photographie draw a territory marked by exceeding conventional real registration forms in favor of translations can be an inner experience. Writing not about something but it would be something even. A photograph that does not comment, does not solve, does not reveal. An enigma form sufficient in itself."
Christian VIUM “Equipped with a medium-format camera, a notebook and a GPS, Christian Vium mapped out Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. Begun in 2010, “The Nomadic City” is a laboratory project that draws up a portrait of this rapidly growing major city, built ex-nihilo in 1957 on a nomadic camping area, through the juxtaposition of his own photographs and many unpublished documents. Archive pictures, press cuttings, photographs borrowed from family albums, film archives and various written sources to which he had access during his research that lasted almost a year, carried out on-site as part of his doctorate in Visual Anthropology, have become the raw material of an abundant installation.” Diane DUFOUR Artistic advisor 2016
BIOGRAPHY Christian Vium is a photographer, filmmaker and anthropologist, primarily working on long-term personal projects anchored in participatory observation and in-depth collaboration. His works is at the intersection between documentary, art and social sciences. His previous works have been awarded by many prizes: FOAM Talents 2015, Lensculture Emerging Talents 2015 Grand Winner and in 2011, the Anthropographia Award for Human Rights in the United States. Christian Vium is based in Aarhus, Denmark. He is currently employed as a Post Doctoral Fellow in visual anthropology, as part of the research project “Camera as Cultural Critique”.

About “The Nomadic City”, he says: By juxtaposing a variety of photographic practices and ethnographic methods, the project affords a kaleidoscopic view of urbanization from below – that is from the urban fringes – inviting inhabitants to participate actively in the writing of the history of the city.

“In 2013, Marta Zgierska survived a serious car accident and several months of intense hardship (surgical procedures, physiotherapy, depression, etc.). This traumatic event completely redefines her photographic work and gave rise to “Post”. By attempting to embody her trauma through photography, Marta Zgierska uses an autobiographical approach. She distances herself symbolically from her fears and anxieties and fixes them in a pure form, producing fragile pictures that hang on by a thread... Glacial, almost silent images, that form the conundrum of a conversation reduced to the bare essentials, the visual articulation of the minimal language of survival. A rock suspended on a rope, a light-coloured coat spattered with blood, the chassis of a compacted car, a woman's hand with a bloody lifeline: each photograph metaphorically evokes a part of her own story, suggesting it by elliptically with clinical aesthetics. A hand-written letter is also depicted as a photograph. This is the focal point of her story: using the words of a former teacher describing her at the age of seven, a very good pupil and liked by all, the young woman clearly shows us the persistent discrepancy that she feels today, faced with the world.” Diane DUFOUR Artistic advisor 2016
About "Post", she says: "I started taking the first photographs as a way of incantation of fear… “Post” is a project on a break point, frozen in dead greyness, silence and tension. Everyone can find their own punctures here – exhausting dreams, fears, obsessions. An individual way of discovering a twin traumatic memory."
Born in 1987 in Poland. Lives in Warsaw BIOGRAPHY Marta Zgierska was born 1987, in Lublin, Poland. She works and lives in Warsaw. She holds MFA in photography (The Leon Schiller National Film, Television and Theatre School), MA in Theatrology and MA in Journalism.

2016 SELECTION
The work of eleven nominates for the 2016 Prix HSBC pour la Photographie draw a territory marked by exceeding conventional real registration forms in favor of translations can be an inner experience. Here, the photographic style is becoming its own subject.
If the photograph appears crossed by the temptation of anthropology (Christian Vium), ethnography (Julien Lombardi), film (Alejandro Erbetta) or the new (Patrick Willocq), purely documentary impulses are rare. We are facing a photograph of the order of lived beyond certainties and large attempts of objectification of the world. The real is not claimed, certified or authenticated but made through an inner experience, that it raises questions of identity (Marta Zgierska, Alejandro Erbetta, Johanna Parra and Elsa Benainous) or is experienced by immersion (Julien Lombardi, Yann Laubscher). So Jean-François Devillers went to Chernobyl to express what the photographic observation manages to capture the persistence of the danger and the terror it inspires. Christian Vium, he always confronts the historical data collected in Nouakchott, capital of Mauritania, every day of its people: every detail is significant to grasp the whole situation.
Of course, the tension is not played between documentary record and subjectivity of the author: it lies rather between the implementation of a clinical recording device in the world and in the same movement, exploration of 'elusive nature of what escapes us. With the notable exception of works presented by JeanFrançois Devillers and Adrien Boyer, the image is never taken for herself, she enrolled in a temporal flow (Erbetta), in a package that makes sense by accumulation (Benainous and Parra, Vium, ...). Landscapes respond to individuals (Lombardi), objects to human bodies (Kim Young June), the staged scenes to intimate musings (Patrick Willocq). For an internalized practice of editing and a search of the fair sequence, all deliver long resonance images, photographs haunted by the desire to move. A new photographic language seems to be emerging today in the Prix HSBC Award nominates. Writing not about something but it would be something even. A photograph that does not comment, does not solve, does not reveal. An enigma form sufficient in itself. Diane DUFOUR Diane Dufour graduated from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris, was the European director of Magnum Photos from 2000 to 2007. She has curated monographic exhibitions co-produced in collaboration with international museums and collectors. She has also curated a number of collective exhibitions, including Euro Visions at the Centre Pompidou in 2005 and L’Image d’après at the Cinémathèque Française in 2007. In 2010 Diane created LE BAL, transforming a 1920s dance hall in Paris into a cutting-edge venue for contemporary images (photography, video, film, new media). Internationally acclaimed for the quality of its thematic exhibitions (Anonymes, l’Amérique sans nom, Topographies de la guerre) and solo shows (Antoine d'Agata, Chris Killip, Paul Graham, Lewis Baltz, Dirk Braeckman), LE BAL has emerged as one of the foremost exhibition spaces for photography in Europe. Its world-class status is reflected in its joint productions with museums including the IMS in Brazil, the Folkwang Museum in Germany and the Winterthur Fotomuseum in Switzerland. In 2013 Diane Dufour created The Curators' day, a platform for debate and project-sharing between thirty European museums. Over the past five years, Diane Dufour has compiled numerous reference publications on contemporary photographers, including Mark Cohen, Dark Knees - Lewis Baltz, Common Objects - Hiroshi Watanabe, A Criminal Investigation and Dirk Braeckman, Sisyphe.
