The 2008 F. Russell Hoyt National Airports Conference (NAC)
T
he 2008 F. Russell Hoyt National Airports Conference (NAC), sponsored by the American Association of Airport Executives, will explore in depth the preparations airport officials need to make as the industry adjusts to drastic increases in oil prices, on top of changes in the economy, in aviation security and in federal regulation. This year’s NAC theme, “Flying High Through Turbulent Times,” highlights the complex issues that face the airport community today: airline shutdowns, fuel prices on the rise, federal funding, environmental mandates, safety management system plans, ground handling, succession planning, and the particular concerns that must be addressed when hosting special events. Roundtables will feature TSA and FAA officials who will conduct an open dialogue with NAC delegates. Further, guest speakers will share the latest news about their companies and the impact this news will have on your airport. The NAC is built upon the popular small group discussion format, which allows participants to discuss and debate numerous technical and management topics in an informal setting. Special roundtables structured by airport size also will allow delegates to share information in a relaxed environment.
The mentor program, another mainstay of the NAC, will be offered again to provide new members of the airport management community the opportunity to learn about the industry and the NAC through interaction with seasoned veterans. The NAC will begin with a welcome reception on Sunday evening, September 7, and conclude on Tuesday, September 9, with a series of drawings for great giveaways! You must be present to win, so plan to stay! An optional tour of Reno-Tahoe International Airport will be offered on Wednesday morning, September 10. Space on the tour is limited to 50 persons, so don’t wait to sign up! And, while you are in Reno, be sure to take advantage of an additional educational opportunity by attending special conferences scheduled prior to the start of the NAC. Featured will be the Basics of Small Airport Management Workshop and the National Airport Performance Measurement and Benchmarking Workshop. Plan to join your colleagues in Reno for this year’s NAC to hear the latest information on issues that directly impact your airport and to network with your peers.
The Reno-Tahoe area will host with National Championship Air Races September 10 – 14, 2008. Registrants wanting to attend this event will receive the special conference discount rate at the hotel through Sunday, September 14, 2008. For more information on the Air Races, visit —

Reno calls itself
“The Biggest Little City in the World,”
but it’s also known as America’s Adventure Place, with opportunities for leisure travel, meetings and conventions.
Culture and Art
Discover the arts in Reno. Enjoy the art experience at the landmark Nevada Museum of Art. Take a leisurely stroll through the Arts District, located along the Truckee River in downtown Reno. Here you’ll find an eclectic array of galleries, shops, restaurants and coffee houses. If you’re in the market for fine art, a trip to Stremmel Gallery is a must for the area’s finest in contemporary paintings, drawings, mixed media and sculpture by mid-career and established American and European artists.
Meadowood Mall, a longtime Reno favorite, is an enclosed regional center located in the city center and attracting more than 6 million tourists who visit the region annually. Shoppers will find more than 100 stores to explore.
Golf, Sports and the outdoors
With a population of more than 211,000, Reno is the largest city in northern Nevada. Located in the southern part of Washoe County, the city is nestled on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in an area called the Truckee Meadows.
Reno offers 40 golf courses and the highest concentration of ski resorts in North America, all within 90 minutes of Reno-Tahoe International Airport. With world-famous Lake Tahoe just a short drive away, visitors can enjoy the crystal blue waters and pristine natural beauty of one of the deepest alpine fresh water lakes in the world.
The Truckee Meadows and surrounding area provide unlimited indoor and outdoor recreational activities. Spectacular Lake Tahoe and the largest concentration of ski areas and ski facilities in the world are all within a 50-mile radius. Biking, camping, hunting, fishing and mountain climbing are all activities that Reno residents and visitors enjoy. To the west, visitors can enjoy Lake Tahoe’s crystal clear water from one of its two fullsize paddlewheel boats, take the breakfast hayride at the historic Ponderosa Ranch, or catch a play at the Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor. To the south, Virginia City will take visitors back in time 100 years to the site of the world’s richest silver strike and the largest historical district in the U.S. Reno-Tahoe is also an ideal home base for side trips to the great American West. Visitors can explore the gold country, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, the Wine Country and California’s beautiful northern coast. All of these excursions are only a few hours away, making RenoTahoe the perfect starting place to explore the West.
Shopping
Reno-Tahoe offers a wide variety of shopping experiences to suit all kinds of shoppers, from big spenders to bargain hunters. Reno is home to an enormous Patagonia outlet store situated within Patagonia’s Main Distribution Center. This $19 million, 171,000-square-foot building is located on the banks of the Truckee River.
Cabela’s stores are known as premier shopping and tourism destinations, drawing visitors from miles away. Reno’s 125,000-square-foot, large-format destination store is located near the Boomtown Hotel Casino on I-80 near the California border (8650 Boomtown Road, Verdi, Nev.). Located in the area of Reno’s Truckee River Whitewater Park is the Truckee River Arts District. Plan to visit both the CalAve and Riverwalk sections of the district for unique shopping excursions to specialty shops, antique stores, boutiques and galleries. This area is quickly becoming Reno’s preeminent neighborhood retail, restaurant, entertainment and business district. Reno has numerous shopping areas with upscale boutiques and specialty stores tucked into quaint neighborhoods throughout the city .
Restaurants
Reno-Tahoe has more four-star restaurants per capita than San Francisco or New York. From family-style Basque restaurants to intimate French bistros to boisterous microbreweries, Reno-Tahoe offers a unique variety of dining experiences.
Reno has two large shopping malls. The newest, most ambitious shopping adventure is The Summit, an open-air, lifestyle shopping center with more than 70 shops. It’s complete with fountains, paths and fire pits to gather around on cool evenings. 2008 F. Russell Hoyt National Airports Conference | 3

Mentor Program and Sponsorship Opportunites Mentor Program
Sponsorship Opportunities
To encourage newcomers to attend the NAC, AAAE is proud to offer the NAC Mentor Program. This program is designed to pair up first-time conference attendees with more experienced attendees (mentors). The mentors are responsible for acclimating new attendees. By being paired with a mentor, first-time attendees have a better opportunity to experience both the formal and informal gatherings at the NAC. A special social/orientation session for Mentor Program participants is planned for Sunday, September 7, prior to the conference opening reception. Those who volunteer to be, or be paired up with, a mentor will receive a 10 percent discount on their registration. Please adjust your total registration cost directly on the registration form. If you would like to be a mentor or are a first-time attendee, check the appropriate box on the registration form on page 11. All participants will be notified in advance of the identity of their program partner, allowing participants to get acquainted prior to the meeting.
Show your company’s commitment to the airport industry by becoming a sponsor of the NAC! You can either sponsor an event at the conference and gain immediate exposure at that event and in other areas (listed below), or be an Airport Angel and be identified as an overall conference sponsor. Sponsorships support events at the NAC, as well as the AAAE Foundation, which provides scholarships to students nationwide. You will gain maximum exposure with more than 150 airport executives at the conference, as well as recognition by the AAAE membership in a variety of other ways, too! In addition to getting your company’s name out to the people attending the conference, AAAE offers state-of-the-art benefits that will reach an even broader audience…ranging from listings on AAAE’s in-house television channel at the conference hotel to contact with thousands of potential customers on AAAE’s award-winning Web site. As a sponsor contributing $1,500 or more, your company will be associated with a specific event at the NAC and be recognized verbally during or in the general session preceding that event. Sponsoring companies will be recognized on signs, in the conference program given to every attendee and in AAAE’s newsletter, Airport Report, which is distributed to more than 4,000 individuals in the industry… all this plus exposure on the continuous loop tape that is shown on the hotel’s in-house television system. In addition, companies contributing $3,000 or more are entitled to display promotional brochures in a specific “trade show” location in the registration area at the conference and will receive one free full delegate registration for the conference! At higher levels of sponsorship, your company will receive additional registrations. Of course, companies still can show their support by becoming an Airport Angel, with a contribution of $950 or more, and receive recognition in the conference program and in Airport Report. A sponsorship registration form is attached on page 8 of this brochure. For more information and a list of available events, please contact Susan Lausch at (703) 824-0500, Ext. 128, or e-mail susan.lausch@aaae.org.

T
he NAC has been recognized for more than 40 years as the outstanding airport management workshop in the country. By using sessions designed to promote group discussions among top industry professionals, the NAC has a long history of attracting both industry newcomers and veterans to discuss the critical issues facing airport managers. More than 300 people attended last year’s conference, and participation in this year’s conference promises to surpass that total. One of the best ways to show your company’s commitment to the field of airport management is by becoming an NAC Sponsor or Airport Angel. By doing so, you will be expressing your company’s dedication to promoting excellence through education. Whether as the sponsor of an event or as an Airport Angel, your support will provide you with the maximum exposure at the best possible time.
There are two ways to show your support for the NAC: you may either select an event from the list below where your support will be recognized, or you may support the NAC by contributing $950 or more and becoming an Airport Angel. As a Sponsor or Airport Angel of the NAC, your company will be recognized in the following manner: a thank-you sign prominently displayed in the conference registration area; exposure on the AAAE Web site; listing in the conference program, and mention in full-page advertisements in Airport Magazine, Airport Report and Airport Report Express. In addition, sponsors contributing $3,000 or more will receive one free delegate registration and a table to display promotional materials in a specific “trade show” location in the conference registration area. The American Association of Airport Executives and Infrastructure Management Group (IMG) present the
National Airport Performance Measurement and Benchmarking Workshop September 6-7, 2008 • Reno, Nevada • Mtg. #080904
The American Association of Airport Executives and Infrastructure Management Group (IMG) are pleased to offer the National Airport Performance Measurement and Benchmarking Workshop, to be held Sept. 6-7 in Reno, Nev.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Board members, airport personnel and governmental officials who want to gain a better understanding of how to measure and create performance objectives for airport service delivery and customer service should attend this course. Those who have benefited previously from this workshop include aviation directors, financial officers, customer service representatives, operations managers and airport staff responsible for planning, engineering, finance, marketing, public relations and legal issues at public airports, as well as those members that are or were in either the Certified Member (C.M.) or Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) programs.
WHY AIRPORT BENCHMARKING AND PERFORMANCE MEASURES?
Airport benchmarking and performance measurement are thoughtful tools used by airport executives to define success. A number of airports have established formal performance measurement systems to maximize the use of their resources, while remaining focused and strategically aligned. In this challenging economy, the aviation sector has been impacted by merger announcements, bankruptcies and high fuel costs. As a result, some airports are restructuring their management practices to mirror those of private corporations.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
Clearly defining operational and business goals and then measuring how your airport’s performance compares with that of other airports are some key elements of survival and success. This workshop is intended to create a forum for the discussion of innovative and effective techniques on measurement of organizational performance in today’s uncertain economic environment. The workshop will provide attendees with a thorough, practical understanding of performance measurement techniques, how to benchmark your airport’s performance with that of other airports and how to set up a comprehensive performance measurement system. The workshop sessions will focus on the opportunities and challenges of operating in an uncertain economy and develop specific actions to successfully improve performance

and revenues. Using case studies presented by airports, expert instruction and discussion groups, attendees will learn how to use airport performance measures and benchmarking to leverage core competencies and strengthen areas for improvement as a result of a well-rooted self-awareness concept of the airport’s overall performance. Attendees also will learn how to integrate airport performance management to IT systems specifically designed to track airport measures. Finally, attendees will receive tips on how to provide an airport’s management team with timely, meaningful information that will improve performance, organizational productivity and staff buy-in. The workshop will provide insights into emerging techniques regarding airport performance measurement and benchmarking, such as: • The Art of Airport Benchmarking • Developing Best Management Techniques for Performance Measurement • The Relationship between Performance Measurement and Customer Service, Operations, Costs and Revenues • Airport Industry Trends • Understanding the Relationship between Performance Measurement and IT Systems • Developing/Integrating an Airport Performance Measurement System • Operating Optimally Under Uncertain Economic Conditions All sessions will take place at the Peppermill Resort Casino in Reno. Registration begins at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, and the workshop will conclude at approximately 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 7. Registration fees include all handouts, one lunch, refreshment breaks and one continental breakfast.
