CLT and the Great Plains
Introduction CLT and the Great Plains is a professional development seminar that explores the usel of cross-laminated timber in architecture. The seminar provides architects, construction professionals and forestry organizations with examples of small to mid-sized architectural projects built from CLT and engineered lumber. It will feature the work of architects currently using CLT in the US and will describe challenges of construction code, engineering and fabrication. It will feature existing and potential supply sources within the Great Plains region and include a report on the influence European methods of small-scale CLT production. CLT and the Great Plains is part of The Great Plains CLT Market Development through Architectural Education CLT Development grant from U.S. Forest Service Wood Innovations 2017 Award. The aim of this seminar is described in the grant as: “NFS and UNL-Arch will recruit national leaders in CLT architectural design to conduct seminars in Nebraska targeting students and practicing architects.

Lecture Themes 9:15 AM – 10:00 AM
Patrick Clark, Wooden Haus Supply
CLT: System Built Lessons from the European Experience CLT evolved in Europe in cooperation with a well established system of Timber Education, Design and Timber Carpentry trades (Timmermen). Successful adoption of CLT in Europe over the past decades can be attributed to the fact that their were a great many products in the Wooden Building marketplace that complimented CLT to become a fully integrated “System Built” product. This presentation will focus on the products that make up the CLT Build System and show European imported projects that have followed this methodology
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Mark Bartlett, WoodWorks
Introducing CLT: New Opportunities for Timber Construction - 1LU/HSW Cross laminated timber (CLT) is an engineered wood building system designed to complement light- and heavy-timber framing options. Because of its high strength and dimensional stability, it can be used as an alternative to concrete, masonry and steel in many building types. This presentation will introduce CLT with a series of project examples that demonstrate its use and associated benefits in a range of applications. Information on manufacturing, specification and code-related considerations will also be discussed.
11:15 AM – 12:15PM Tom S. Chung - Leers Weinzapfel Associates Mass Timber & CLT Design: A Case Study of John W. Olver Design Building at UMass Amherst Designing in Mass Timber and CLT: A Case Study of UMass Amherst Design Building. Presentation to discuss the process of CLT design in detail from the collaboration of the architect and the structural engineer, solving code and approvals process, addressing issues of cost, schedule, and constructability. A holistic look at the main aspects of CLT geared towards building professionals.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Khalid Khan, Assoc. AIA,Neumann Monson Architects Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) and multi-story construction Neumann Monson Architects is currently working on the first Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) multi-story office building in North America, located in the Historic East Village of Des Moines, Iowa in conjunction with StructureCraft located in British Columbia, Canada and Ryan Companies who are the General Contractors on the project.
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Mark Bartlett, WoodWorks
CLT Solutions: Addressing Common Design Challenges – 1 LU/HSW Now available to North American building designers, cross laminated timber (CLT) offers the structural simplicity needed for cost-effective projects, as well as benefits such as fast installation, reduced waste, improved thermal performance and design versatility. This presentation will cover some of the more challenging aspects of CLT building design, including fire and life safety, lateral and seismic design, acoustic performance and building envelope. Resources available to design and construction professionals, such as the new US CLT Handbook, will also be discussed.
3:15 PM – 4:00 PM
Jason Griffiths and Aubrey Wassung UNL
PLAIN PLAIN is a multi-discipline platform established to integrate architectural education with engineered-lumber construction in the Great Plains Region. Based in the College of Architecture at UNL PLAIN provides a resource for students and non-profit organizations interested in building projects that advance the use of CLT, Glulam and forestry products in architecture. PLAIN has established research and educational initiatives through grant-funded collaborations with Nebraska Forest Service via the USDA- Forest Service. This presentation will describe recent projects by PLAIN including the first CLT projects Nebraska for the Baxa Fellowship Residence and the South Sioux City Orchard Facility. Other work includes the Emerge Cabin in Oregon and the Santee Sioux Child Resource Center. This presentation will highlight grant-funded research it post-occupancy evaluation of recent completed buildings as well as a feasibility study on potential mass-timber fabrication capability within UNL or at CPBS in collaboration with NFS, Bio Sciences, and forestry organizations within Nebraska.

Bios Patrick H. Clark Patrick Clark is a third generation builder who has spent the past 25 years focusing on Heavy Timber construction. His former company Shady Grove Log and Timber Builders specialized in Log and Timber Structures and also operated a specialty sawmill. For five years Pat served as the Vice-President of the International Log Builders Association. Pat has been a presenter at both the Timber Framers Guild and International Log Builders Association’s annual conferences. In 2009 Pat changed the direction of his business, after a research trip to Europe led to the discovery of a whole new range of structural and thermal products not available in the USA. Since then his focus has been to integrate these European products into the North American construction market. In 2011 his company imported and raised the 1st Commercial CLT building to be built in the USA, “ The Long Hall” in Whitefish Montana. His Company Wooden Haus Supply provides all of the products necessary to complete an all wood, structural and thermal envelope with a focus on High Performance design. Pat Holds a Bachelors degree in Business and Finance from Mount Saint Mary’s University.
Mark Bartlett Mark Bartlett is the Regional Director for WoodWorks, an organization that provides free technical support and resources related to the design of wood buildings. He has a degree in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University and is a Professional Engineer in the states of Texas and Oklahoma. In his 25+ years of experience, he has worked as a consulting structural engineer and as a field engineer with Simpson Strong-Tie.
