Gravenhurst Community Profile 2013 1 Introduction Gravenhurst, the first town in Muskoka with an historic archway, is known as the Gateway to Muskoka. Gravenhurst is a town that embodies all that "small town Ontario" has to offer. Uniquely nestled between Gull Lake and Lake Muskoka, the community also extends to beautiful Kahshe Lake to the south and encompasses many other smaller but just as picturesque lakes. Gravenhurst offers visitors a picturesque town catering to all ages and interests. Gravenhurst is the cultural centre of Muskoka, combining historical attractions, theatre and live music with the area's scenic appeal. The Gravenhurst Opera House, originally constructed in 1901, is home to theatre productions during the summer and a host of other events throughout the year. The Bethune Memorial House celebrates the life of Dr. Norman Bethune and his impressive contributions to medical science. The first floor of the house has been restored to the time of 1890, offering visitors a portal back in time. Gravenhurst is also home to the oldest operating steamship in North America, the RMS Segwun—Ojibwa for springtime. Originally built in 1887, this steamship has been refitted in order to provide luxurious cruises on the breathtaking Muskoka Lakes. During the summer farmer's markets abound, local artists set up outdoor galleries and golfers scurry to the local links. Colder weather brings winter festivals, trips to the nearby ski hill and crisp days perusing the local boutiques. Gravenhurst’s heritage runs deep, dating back to the 19th century. With lumber being high in demand, settlers began coming to Muskoka for the bountiful forests. Lumberyards and railways were built around 1875 to transport lumber to other parts of the province. Locally, lumber was transported by water and by horse. Land grants were plentiful, but agriculture was not profitable due to the rocky terrain. People changed their occupations and began providing meat and food for the lumberjacks and grain for horses. Eventually, lumber mills were flourishing along the shorelines of the lake, and the railway started carrying passengers traveling into Gravenhurst and Muskoka to enjoy the tranquil lakes and forests of the region. Hotels and resorts were built throughout the lakes and a booming tourist trade developed. A huge boat building industry began along with transferring guests to and from these resorts. Gravenhurst offers visitors a wide range of accommodations, restaurants and attractions. Drive to Gravenhurst from Toronto in only 90 minutes. Fly, from anywhere, and land at the newly renovated and expanded Muskoka Airport, or take a leisurely boat trip through the Trent-Severn waterway. Leave the pressures of city life behind to soak up the sun in a lakeside Muskoka chair, or just gaze at the stars at night. Leisurely stroll to shop and dine along the Muskoka wharf boardwalk, or pursue more adventurous activities by challenging yourself on a canoe route, mountain bike route or one of many hiking trails. Come to participate in all special events, or set up business like many others have already done. Whether you chose to live, work or play in Gravenhurst, the warm hospitality, unique heritage and cultural assets, as well as the natural beauty, will capture your heart.

Within the category of movers, a further distinction is made between nonmigrants and migrants; this difference is called migration status.

Net Import & Export of Labour Force

The next table highlights industry sectors in which there is a net “export” or “import” of labour. In 2006, there were 3,965 jobs in Gravenhurst, and an employed resident labour force of 5,130, indicating that Gravenhurst was a net “exporter” of at least 1,165 employees. The net export/import calculation is simply the number of jobs in each Gravenhurst's industry minus the number of Gravenhurst's residents working in that particular industry. It is important to note that the numbers indicated under-represent the actual numbers of employees, as not all Gravenhurst residents worked in Gravenhurst. The following table indicates that the size of the Gravenhurst resident labour force greatly exceeds the jobs available in almost all Gravenhurst industry sectors. From the economic development point of view, this represents a potential opportunity to attract these industries, as there is a resident labour force commuting elsewhere to work in that industry. The following industry sectors have more jobs than resident labour force in Gravenhurst: Public administration; Accommodation and food services; Finance and insurance and Educational services. The province’s 2009 budget also proposes to decrease the small business income tax rate from 5.5% to 4.5% effective July 1, 2010. Ontario levies a surtax at a rate of 4.25% on CCPCs claiming the Ontario small business deduction in order to gradually reduce the benefit of the deduction where taxable income exceeds the small business income threshold. Based on the small business limit of $500,000 the phase-put range for the application of the surtax is between $500,000 and $1.5 million. The province’s 2009 budget proposes to eliminate this small business deduction surtax, effective July 1, 2010.
