If you are planning to rent a cottage in or around Gravenhurst this summer, you ought to know that Ontario law requires that summer vacation rentals have working smoke alarms on every level of the building and outside all sleeping areas. And whether you secure your cottage via one of the many reputable cottage rental services in our area, or through one of the popular vacation rental websites such as AirBNB or Homeaway, your fire safety needs are no different than they are at home. Working smoke alarms, combined with a PRACTICED escape plan are sure ways to ensure your family is properly prepared – even while you’re on vacation.
The owner of the property has a legal responsibility to provide working smoke alarms, maintain them, and test them regularly (including after EACH change in tenancy) as well as provide maintenance instructions to tenants and renters. But tenants and renters have responsibilities too. It’s an offence for anyone to intentionally disable a smoke alarm or render it inoperable. Tenants must also notify the owner if a smoke alarm is missing, disconnected, or is not operational. (reference FPPA Subsection 6.3.3.). Regular B&B’s are no different – if sleeping accommodations are provided, smoke alarms MUST be present to provide early warning of a fire. Think mobile homes or campers are exempt from the law… think again. But regardless of the law, it just makes good sense to protect your family while you’re on vacation. Unfortunately tragedy doesn’t take a vacation make sure it doesn’t ruin yours! This community safety message is provided as a courtesy by the Town of Gravenhurst. For more information on any fire safety matter, please contact us at 705-687-3414.
