GRAVENHURST Go Social With Us!

TOWN NOTICES DID YOU KNOW...IT’S THE LAW! Gravenhurst is a large community covering some 518 square kilometers. Under 10 square miles of our community is protected by fire hydrants and that means water for fire protection purposes must either be available on site, or be brought to the site by water tanker trucks in the case of a fire emergency. For some buildings located in areas without fire hydrants, the Ontario Building Code mandates that the owners install private water supplies such as cisterns or tanks. Once these have been installed, the Ontario Fire Code makes it mandatory that property owners maintain these in working condition. The fire code specifies what periodic (weekly, monthly and annual) inspection and maintenance procedures must be done. The rationale behind these requirements is, of course, to ensure the proper operation of these “systems” in the event of an emergency. Similarly, some fire hydrants within the more urban area of the community are located on private property and are privately owned. Again the Ontario Fire Code mandates that property owners maintain these in proper working order by inspecting and conducting maintenance activities at prescribed intervals. And as we pointed out in previous editions of “It’s the Law”, the legislation places this responsibility squarely on the property owner to do these things. Part 6 of the Ontario Fire Code sets out the various requirements in more detail, and so if you own or are responsible for a private fire hydrant of other similar fire protection equipment, you must know what your responsibilities are, and you must fulfill these in order to avoid risk. This community safety message is brought to you as a courtesy by the Town of Gravenhurst. For more information, please contact the Fire Prevention Division at 705-687-3414.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Do You Have Your Household Emergency Plan? Are You Prepared Should an Emergency Occur in Gravenhurst? Emergency Preparedness begins in the home and every household should have an Emergency Plan. It will help you and your family know what do you in the case of an emergency. Remember that you and your family may not be together when an emergency occurs. Plan how you will meet up or contact one another in the event of an emergency. Some of the information to include in your Household Emergency Plan are:  Escape Routes – identify emergency exits from each room in your house as well as evacuation routes from your neighbourhood;  Meeting Places – identify safe places where everyone should meet;  Emergency Kit – identify the location of your 72-Hour Emergency Kit;  Pets – some public shelters or hotels may not be pet friendly due to certain health regulations – plan to take your pet(s) with you to a friend or relatives home or identify a “pet-friendly” hotel or pet boarding facility in advance;  Emergency Contact Information – have a list prepared in advance and put a copy of the list close to your telephone. If possible, program the numbers into your phone;  Children – ask your children’s school or daycare about their emergency policies – find out how they will communicate in an emergency and what type of authorization they require if you aren’t able to pick them up yourself;  Medications and Medical Equipment – write down details about medical conditions, medications, insurance and identify any special health needs such as equipment.
