DID YOU KNOW...IT’S THE LAW The smell of burning leaves is either one that stirs memories of your childhood, or one that literally makes you sick. Either way, it's unlawful to rake your leaves into the ditch or into a pile and burn them during daylight at this time of year. It can also be dangerous if an ember is carried away by a breeze. Open air burning is controlled through a By-law here in Gravenhurst, and daytime burning is strictly prohibited with few exceptions between April 1 and October 31. Burning leaves is prohibited year-round in Ward 1, the most densely populated area of Town. This By-law is strictly enforced by the Towns By-law enforcement team. Aside from risking a substantial fine for illegal burning, if a fire like this gets out of control and needs an emergency fire department response, the Town will move to recover costs. As an example, a fire originating from an unlawful open air burning that results in a three truck response that takes two hours to extinguish will result in a bill of over $3600 for the property owner. Open air burning can be dangerous and expensive... we recommend brown bagging and a drive to the landfill. This public safety message has been brought to you by the Town of Gravenhurst. For more information about Town By-laws please contact us at 705-687-3412. For information on fire prevention matters, please contact us at 705-687-3414.
