NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE UNDER S. 32 OF THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT, R.S.O. 1990, c. O.18 TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Gravenhurst intends to designate the eastern portion of Lighthouse Island, located at Part of Island A in the Town of Gravenhurst, District Municipality of Muskoka, as a property of Cultural Heritage Value under Part IV of The Ontario Heritage Act (R.S.O 1990, Ch. O. 18). A By-law to designate the property is to be considered by Gravenhurst Town Planning Council at its regular meeting to be held at 5:00 p.m. on October 18, 2016. STATEMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE VALUE: The Narrows at only 80 feet in width and 20 feet in depth is a difficult and dangerous channel to enter. As it is the only way in and out of Muskoka Bay, the site of the lighthouse has always been important for navigation. In the mid to late 1800’s, the Muskoka lakes Navigation Company had to supply their own aids for safety and ease of navigation on the lakes. Tenders were called for in 1905 for a contract to construct a white wooded pyramidal tower on masonry foundation with a square wooden lantern to be raised 28 feet above the water level. Ever since, the Narrows Lighthouse has been a familiar structure on Lake Muskoka. During the first 44-year tenure of the lighthouse, just one keeper, Isaac Barnes, was in charge of keeping the lights on by lighting and extinguishing the light in the lanterns every day, but for over a half century now, it has been equipped with an electric light. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION is available at the Planning Department in the Municipal Office during office hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday). For further information, please contact Jeremy Rand, Planner at 705-687-3412 Ext. 246. Notice of objection to the designation must be filed with the municipality by Monday, October 10, 2016 Dated at the Town of Gravenhurst this 8th day of September 2016.
