More Smoke Alarm Facts We all know that working smoke alarms save lives. This is a well-known fact. What may not be a well-known fact is that there are devices manufactured for those that may be hearing impaired. For the deaf or hearing impaired, smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom and outside of each sleeping area and on every level of the home. For added protection and safety, interconnect the alarms so that when one sounds, they all sound. Some additional information: Smoke alarms and alert devices are available for deaf or hearing impaired people. There are smoke alarms now equipped with strobe lights that flash catching the attention of the affected individual(s). The flashing strobe warns the individual(s) that the alarm has activated and of a possible fire. A pillow or a bed shaker is now available that when people are asleep, will awake them when the alarm

(GIBSON/ROBBINS/BROWN) sounds. Kayla Thibeault-Clerk An “alert” device is also available that uses a loud, mixed, low-pitched sound that can wake them. Combined The Corporation of the Town of Gravenhurst with a pillow or bed shaker greatly enhances the safety of the deaf or hearing impaired individual(s). 3-5 Pineridge Gate - Gravenhurst, Ontario P1P 1Z3 Finding this equipment:

WINTER OPERATIONS

DID YOU KNOW THAT most Town roads, because of the classification of road, are maintained to a “snow packed” condition? However, the frequent freeze-thaw cycles we have experienced this season has resulted in ice build-up and rutting on some of our roads. In response the Town, where road conditions and temperatures warrant, deploys graders (ice-blading) to help smooth out the roads and improve ride quality.

Check out home improvement store websites to look for strobe light smoke alarms. Be sure the device is approved by an independent testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA). For further information about smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, please visit Gravenhurst.ca/fire or call 705-687-3414 ext. 223.
