Long Weekend Safety The first long weekend of summer has arrived with an abundance of things to do. Weather permitting, is it going to be a nice, scenic road trip, dedicated yard work or a relaxing time at the cottage followed up with a traditional family barbecue? After a day full of activities, slow it down a bit with a great meal cooked on the barbecue. Whether it be a charcoal or propane fired grill, exercise care and safety to protect everyone attending. If using the charcoal barbecue, be sure to drown the coals with water after use and definitely before going to bed. Pay special attention to young children, making sure they do not get too close to the barbecue. Establish a 3 foot “Safe Zone” where children are not permitted to enter. We all know burns are very painful and can be very serious. But, if a burn does occur, place the injury under cool running water immediately. If unsure of the extent of injury, seek medical attention immediately. Do not let a preventable injury ruin your summer.
