FAMILY ESCAPE PLAN If you wake up to the sound of your smoke alarms tonight, would your family get out safely? Unless you have a planned/practiced home escape plan, chances may not be in their favor. Not knowing what to do could be the difference between life and death. The latter is not what firefighters want as the outcome. All household members need to know what to do when the smoke alarms sound. Practice your escape plan, making sure everyone an get out quickly. Everyone needs to know two ways out of each room in the event the main entrance/ exit is blocked. Windows are the usual alternative in this case. Make sure they open easily and all members are capable of operating them. Young children, older adults and people with disabilities are going to need assistance. Make sure somebody is delegated to provide that assistance to avoid any confusion as to who is doing what and going where. Keep in mind, that depending on the disability, an additional person may be required to assist. In smoke conditions, be sure to get low and crawl below the smoke. The air is often cooler, easier to see and easier to breathe. Smoke inhalation is the main cause of fire related deaths. Escape plans also include a meeting place for family members once you have escaped the home. The neighbours’ home, a streetlight, a driveway across the street are examples of a safe place to gather. Once you are out of the home, stay out. Do not re-enter the home. Call the Fire Department from outside the home or from a neighbours’ home.
