HOLIDAY WEEKEND FIRE SAFETY The August long weekend is almost here. What are your plans? Cottage, boating, camping and an old-fashioned charcoal barbecue can all be fun, but be careful and be safe. If you are thinking about celebrating with an old-fashioned charcoal barbecue, keep in mind these following tips: 1. Treat your outdoor kitchen the same as your indoor kitchen. 2. Be careful if using a starter fluid to help light the charcoal. Many burns have happened when using what some consider “an extra little bit”. 3. No different than a propane barbecue or kitchen stove, never leave the appliance unattended. 4. And create that “Safe Zone” where the children are not allowed to enter or play in. 5. Burns are very painful and can be serious. If somebody gets a burn, place the injury under cool, running water to help prevent the injury from getting worse. If in doubt, seek medical attention right away. 6. Be sure to have pails of water or sand nearby to control the fire and make sure to drown the hot coals fire before going to bed. Whatever plans you may have to celebrate the long weekend, be careful, be safe and enjoy.
