On The Road - Out and About As owners of campers, trailers and recreational vehicles, if you are not already out and about travelling the roads, you are probably getting prepared to do so. Spending some quality time thoroughly checking things over on your vehicle should come naturally. For your safety, Gravenhurst Fire Department offers the following information for your consideration. Before heading out be sure propane cylinders, appliances, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, heating equipment and any chimneys/vents have been thoroughly checked over, inspected and tested. When transporting propane cylinders, be sure they are secured in the upright position to prevent tipping over. Make sure all valves are closed and any exposed threading are protected with safety caps. When prepping the appliance for usage, use a 50/50 mixture of dish soap and water to test your fuel supply for any leakage. If bubbles appear, re-tighten all connections and test again. Like your home or cottage, recreational vehicles and campers are usually equipped with ventilation systems and possibly chimneys. These should be closely inspected for any blockages such as leaves, nests and other debris accumulation during storage over the winter months. Partially blocked chimneys can lead to very unsafe conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and very poisonous gas. Check, clean and test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Replace the batteries if equipped and/or replace the devices if 10 years of age. Be sure they are working. These simple checks and inspections will help you to enjoy your recreational home, camper or trailer and be a little safer. For additional information regarding recreational vehicle and camper safety tips, contact the Gravenhurst Fire Department at 705-695-3414 ext. 223 or view the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) website at safetyino.ca.
