BOATING SAFETY TIPS Summer is underway and we are already experiencing a number of boating accidents/fires and also a number of most unfortunate drownings. While the boating season continues, so will the incidents of injury, loss and most unfortunate, the fatalities. Boats are not any different than other means of transportation such as cars, trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles. If there is a difference, it is only because it is in the water. They still deserve the same respect as the other modes of transportation, and perhaps even a little bit more.

A few safety tips include: 1. When fuelling, moore your boat securely to avoid spills. 2. Shut off all engines and electrical/power supplies. 3. Extinguish any open flames. 4. Obey the “DO NOT SMOKE” signage. 5. Ground the nozzle against the filler pipe and do not overfill the tank. 6. Wipe up fuel spills and dispose of the used cloths/towels in an approved container. 7. Run the engine compartment blower for at least 4 minutes immediately before starting the engine to eliminate any excess vapours. 8. DO NOT become a drowning statistic. Canadian Red Cross Drowning Report says that hundreds of Canadians drown each year. ONLY 12.5% who died were wearing a properly fastened and fitted lifejacket or PFD. 9. Choose to wear your lifejacket or personal floatation device (PFD) and make your boat ride a safe return home. Make the right decision.
