FIRE SAFETY Carbon Monoxide “The Silent Killer” Carbon monoxide is also known as the “Silent Killer” because it is a poisonous gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. Because of this, leaking carbon monoxide can often overcome you without any evidence of a problem to the person. With the cold weather and winter upon us, gas furnaces/heaters, gas driers, stoves and other fuel-fired appliances increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. An incomplete burning of fuels allows for the production of the deadly gases, so proper maintenance of the appliance is a must. Examples of fuels that can generate this “silent killer” include, but may not be limited to propane, wood, heating oil, charcoal and kerosene. Burnt wood ashes sitting in a container give off carbon monoxide gas, so do not store indoors. Now is also the time with the accumulation of snow, to ensure any chimneys, outside vents etc. haven’t been plugged or buried in snow drifts. This would have a direct impact on the proper operations of the ventilation system for the appliances. Fact 1: Mandated by the Ontario Building Code, carbon monoxide alarms have been required in homes and residential buildings since 2014. Fact 2: Approximately 60% of Canadians do not have working carbon monoxide alarms in their home.
If you do not have the means to purchase a carbon monoxide alarm, please contact the Gravenhurst Fire Department at 705-697-3414.
