More About Carbon Monoxide The installation of carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms cannot be stressed enough. Raising awareness and educating the public about the dangers of carbon monoxide continues throughout the fire service. Each year over 50 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning in Canada. Many others are left severely affected by CO poisoning complications. Know the symptoms of CO Flu like symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, headaches, loss of consciousness and the worst case ….. death. If your CO alarm sounds and somebody is experiencing CO symptoms, get everyone out of the residence immediately. Once outside away from the home, call 9-1-1 for assistance. If your CO alarm sounds but nobody is experiencing any symptoms of CO poisoning, check to see if the battery needs replacing before calling 9-1-1. Know the sound of your CO alarm Your CO alarm will sound differently than the smoke alarm. Take the time to test the alarms and let everybody hear them, and be able to identify which one is sounding. Remember, there is a difference between a low-battery warning sound than the sound alerting you to a carbon monoxide issue. Like smoke alarms, CO alarms also have a life expectancy (typically between 7-10 years), at which time they will also make a beeping noise. Be sure to check the manufacture date and specifications, as they may be due for replacement. Familiarize everybody by following the manufacturers’ instructions. If you do not have the means to purchase a carbon monoxide alarm, please call the Gravenhurst Fire Department at 705-687-3414.
