More About Carbon Monoxide Question: What is Carbon Monoxide? Answer: Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. Question: How would I know if I have been affected by carbon monoxide? Answer: Usually experience flu-like symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea and drowsiness. Question: How does it originate? Answer: Through the incomplete burning process of such fuels such as natural gas, wood, propane, heating oil and kerosene just to name a few. Question: What can be done to reduce the chances of an incomplete burning process? Answer: Have a competent, qualified service agency conduct annual inspections of your fuel fired heating equipment (furnace, water heater, gas stove, gas fireplace etc.) to ensure everything is properly functioning. Question: What about my wood-burning fireplace or wood-stove? Answer: Contact a WETT Certified Energy Technician Chimney Sweep to conduct a complete, thorough inspection and cleaning as necessary of your appliance. Question: Are there additional precautions I can take to protect my family? Answer: Carbon Monoxide alarms have been required in Ontario homes since 2001. Alarms should be located adjacent to sleeping areas and at least 15 inches from fuel fired appliances.
