With the weather only getting colder in the coming days and weeks, the list of things to do in preparation becomes longer and longer. Where do we get started you ask? 1. Have your heating system including chimneys checked, inspected and cleaned as necessary by a competent, qualified service agent. If heating is done by a wood-burning appliance, be sure the agent is a WETT Certified Chimney Sweep. 2. Clean out the eaves of leaves, pine needles and other debris. 3. Stockpile your supply of hardwood away from the house. Stacking on the deck, verandah or porch greatly adds to the fire load and spread in the event of a fire. 4. Most carbon monoxide alarms have a dated lifespan of 5-10 years. Check the expiry date on your alarms and replace according to the manufacturer specifications. 5. Almost 50% of all home fires occur in homes with no alarms. Your chances of dying in a house fire are cut in half if you have working smoke alarms. 6. And remember this, only properly functioning smoke alarms can protect you. Make regular maintenance and testing a priority.
