HALLOWEEN SAFETY SIMCOE MUSKOKA DISTRICT HEALTH UNIT
Recommendations and Tips for a safe Halloween from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit o Stay home if feeling ill or if you have mild symptoms. o Only go out with members of your direct household. o Only trick-or-treat outside. o Both trick-or-treaters and people handing out candy should wear a face covering. o A costume mask is not a substitute for a face covering and should not be worn over a face covering as it may make it difficult to breathe. o Consider building your face covering into your, or your child’s, costume. o Do not congregate or linger at doorsteps. Line up two metres (6 feet) apart if waiting. o Avoid high-touch surfaces and objects. o Whether collecting or handing out treats, wash your hands often and thoroughly or use hand sanitizer. o Do not leave treats in a bucket or bowl for children to grab. o Consider using tongs, or other similar tools to hand out treats.

CARBON MONOXIDE AWARENESS WEEK
November 1 – 7/20 People ask, ”What is carbon monoxide?” Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. Causing flu-like symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea and drowsiness, carbon monoxide is often heard as being the “silent killer”. With the colder season upon us, use of gas furnaces/heaters, gas driers and other fuel-fired appliances, increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Without proper maintenance, a faulty appliance can produce carbon monoxide as a result of incomplete burning of fuels. These fuels can consist of wood, propane, natural gas, oil including heating oil and kerosene. Charcoal and coal are also fuels that produce carbon monoxide products as well. Carbon monoxide alarms have been required in homes and residential buildings since 2001 mandated by the Ontario Building Code. It has been found that approximately 60% of Canadians do not have working carbon monoxide alarms in their home. Watch for continued information about checking, cleaning and testing your alarms. For more information about carbon monoxide alarms visit Gravenhurst.ca/fire or call 705-697-3414.
