FARM SAFETY Here is the first of “Your Farm and Fire” safety tips as the summer crops start being harvested and prepped for storage. 1. Have electrical services and wiring inspected by your local district office of the Electrical Safety Authority. Replace worn or damaged wiring. 2. Keep ordinary wiring and lighting away from wet areas and protect against breakage and contact with any combustible materials. 3. Check lightning protection and grounding installations ensuring all are in good condition. 4. Always refuel equipment outdoors, away from open flames and sparks – be sure the motor is shut off and cool before refueling. 5. Put up and maintain “NO SMOKING” signs in hazardous areas. Never permit smoking in barns or near storage of any other flammable materials. 6. Ensure crops are dry before placing into storage and provide adequate ventilation. Check for other spontaneous heating hazards, such as manure piles and oil or paint covered rags.
