FARM SAFETY With Fall quickly arriving, here is the first of “Your Farm & Fire Safety” tips as the summer crops continue being harvested and prepped for storage. 1. Have electrical services and wiring inspected by your local district office of the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Replace any worn/damaged wiring. 2. Keep ordinary wiring and lighting away from wet areas and protect against breakage and contact with any combustible materials. 3. Check lighting protection and grounding installation ensuring all are in good condition. 4. Always refuel equipment outdoors, away from open flames and sparks – be sure the motor is shut off and cool before refueling. 5. Put up and maintain “NO SMOKING” and “TURN IGNITION OFF” signs in fuel and other hazardous storage areas. 6. Ensure crops are dry before placing into storage and provide adequate ventilation. Check for other spontaneous heating hazards, such as manure piles and oil or paint covered rags.
