This booklet contains some of my work produced during my academic studies and my professional placement between 2010 and 2015. Among them you will find one housing project, one competition entry, my research thesis, three design studio projects and my design thesis which is still in progress. All the projects contain my personal participation throughout the whole synthetic, design and presentation process. Having dealt with various scales during my studies and my professional placement, I became highly interested in architecture design and learned to appreciate both the synthetic-experimental as well as the design process. I am keen on expanding my knowledge and gaining further professional experience through practical implementation. I am looking forward to working as a team member in competitions as well as any other project I can be helpful with. Thank you for your time and consideration.

the cave home professional housing Project: summer 2015 LOCATION: ANDROS, GREECE architect: area office team: stella daouti, giorgos mitroulias, michael john raftopoulos, jason houssein built area: 280 M2

A SMALL SUMMER RESIDENCE COMPLEX IN ANDROS ISL AND Andros is is the nor ther nmost island of the Greek Cyclades archipelago. I ts sur face is for the most par t mountainous, with many fruitful and well-watered valleys. Located in such a mountainous area, eight acres of dr y land make the projec t ’s site. A steep landscape with ver y high slope par ts. Thanks to its location and or ientation the site offers dramatic views out to the bay and the sea beyond. The scheme aims at accomodating the needs of a five member family and their guests on vacation. The main volume is a 200 m2 area cave house that meets the needs of the family. Connec ted with a pedestr ian public path, the rest smaller volumes that meet the guests’ needs are placed freely in the site area situated though in close proximit y to the main house. The main house that is built underground consists of four light wells and has access to three different t ype of ter races. The wells are placed strategically in var ious points inside the house, thus providing with enough amount of light dur ing the day. The main ter race is a public outdoor meeting point for the residents that hosts outdour ac tivities such as dining and swimming and provides also access to the main house. The other smaller ter races are pr ivate outdoor spaces that offer unlimited sea view to the family members only. The guests houses are cubical autonomous buildings that are equipped enough to meet the guest ’s needs. They consist of a living room, a k itchen and an en suite bedroom . Lastly, they pro vide access to pr ivate ter races. The residential complex is designed based on traditional Cycladic architec ture. All the white volumes are minimally shaped and lightly placed on the aggressive landscape resulting to a harmonian architec ture ensemble.

Persephone's ark & grove Academic Project: Spring 2014 Urban Park - Architectural Studio 8 Supervisor: Athanasios Spanomaridis Team: Jason Houssein, Giorgis Papanastasatos

AN URBAN PARK (GROVE) ENCLOSED BY A CULTUR AL CENTER (ARK ) IN THE AREA OF AGIOS ANDREAS, IN THE CIT Y OF PATR AS D ur ing our 8th semester we were asked to design an ur ban par k , for the cit y of Patras, as par t of D esign Studio 8. An ur ban par k that ser ves as a br idge bet ween the built environment of the cit y and the sea. Such a par k is required to restore the relationship with the sea that once was par t of the ur ban tissue by merging the gap that was created by one of the cit y's major highways. O ur proposal focuses around t wo major points. Firstly, it is of great impor tance for us that a new k ind of green space is provided for the area's local residents. A green space sur rounded by cultural programs and ac tivities, thus for ming an ur ban spir itual environment. The par k should also connec t the cit y with the sea, so that it allows people to interac t with water as par t of their daily routines. B y tak ing advantage of the site's nar row shape we propose a linear par k enclosed by buildings that constitute of a local cultural center that hosts programs that there is a lack of. O ur goal is to for m a protec ted green space with a spir itual and sacred charac ter, as the par k consists of godess D emeter ’s (Persephone’s mother according to greek mythology) ancient temple ruins and is also situated near the local church. As a result, the view of the par k and the access to the cultural center is provided only by seven struc tures-thresholds that also ser ve as obser vator ies because of the par k's lower ground level. Using as reference var ious examples of chinese gardens, we de signed a par k that consists of sheltered and open-air paths, canals, lakes and squares that ser ve as meeting points and host public ac tivities. Amongst the buildings that for m the cultural center there is a museum that hosts the findings from the site’s excavations and a research center where the exhibits are being preser ved. There is also a public librar y that holds the museum’s records, a res taurant, a theatre and an administration building.

diploma research thesis cinematic walks in athens during crisis october 2014 hardcopy publication, 20x25CM, PAGES: 134 SUPERVISOR : PANOS DRAGONAS

PRESENTED : OC TOBER 2014 | GR ADE : 9.5/10 | RESEARCH DUR ATION : 6 MONTHS PUBLISHED : arch.upatras.g r, official website of A rchitecture D epartment, U niver sity of Patras , G reekArchitec ts.gr, e - maga z ine The subjec t of my research is the cinematic represantation of the Athenian landscape dur ing the great cr isis per iod. The aim is to investigate the elements that shape the identit y of cinematic Athens. The research focuses in shots that capture the cit y ’s public image. As a result, scenes about public spaces, local squares, lodges, patios, building facades and other elements that shape the cit y ’s image, are being analysed. Two other focus points of great imporatance are, firstly, the way the leading charac ter chooses to move into the ur ban tissue, for example if he goes on foot or if he uses some k ind of public transpor tation, and secondly, the qualit y charac ter istics of the ur ban environment. I nitially, the research will focus on the relationship bet ween cit y and cinema by investigating how cities are being filmed. M ore in par ticular, the relationship bet ween the cit y of Athens and cinema will become the center of the study. To achieve a better understanding of this relationship we will look into cinematic represantations of Athens from the 60’s to the prese nt. Subsequently, the research will tur n to contemporar y greek cinema dur ing the inter national financial cr isis, from the year 2009 to the present. As a nex t step, the most represantative films of the cr isis pe r iod will be collec ted and analysed. M ore specifically, the research will concentrate on public, outdoor spaces of the athenian ur ban landscape, especially when those spaces are being communicated through the leading charac ter ’s eyes. The most representative ur ban space’s shots, from those films, will be categor ised according to the ur ban issues tthey reveal. Special attention will be given to the presentation of cinematic spaces through diagrams

votanikos: minimum inhabiting Academic Project: fall 2013 residence complex - Architectural Studio 7 Supervisor: panos dragonas Team: Jason Houssein, ioanna leotsakou

RESIDENCE COMPLEX | CO -WORKING SPACES | URBAN AGRICULTURE D ur ing our 8th semester we were asked to design a resindence complex in the area of Votanikos,a subur b of Athens, as par t of D esign Studio 7. The residence complex was required to provide sma ll apar tments based on the micro -living philoshophy. I n addition to the living facilities, it was supposed to provide co -wor k ing spaces for young designers and outdour as well as indour agr iculture spaces. O ur proposal focuses on t wo points. The first point that needs to be under lined about the idea of the complex is the way we dealt with the existing building of the site. We decided not only to keep it and restore it, but also make it par t of the synthetic process. M ore specifically, we placed t wo new buildings in the site area, thus creating three cores (including the existing building). Each core had different shape and program. The existing building ser ved as a public space for the wor k ing facilities, a greenhouse became the main space of the agr iculture program and the third buliding ser ved as a meeting space for the complex ’s residents. The three cores-buildings were connec ted by a nar row pedestr ian by way. The second point has to do with the rest of the complex. We realised that as long as we were de signing micro -living apar tments, the main building itself should reflec t the same philosophy. As a result, we design three main buildings that contained the co -wor k ing spaces in the ground and 1st floor and the apar tments from the 2d to the 5th floor. M or phologiacally, the three main buildings were three slices that surounded the three cores, thus shaping the contex t of the complex.

ev-0live-ing JANUARY 2014 EVOLO SKYSCRAPER COMPETITION 2014 OPEN INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION Team: Jason Houssein, Alexandros Chareas, Giorgis Papanastasatos, Anna Giotakou, Georgina Giassia, Katerina Liaptsi A network of five olive processing skyscrapers in the M editerranean S ea . The olive tree grows in the M editer ranean zone since ancient times and its fruit and produc ts play a leading role in human health. S cientific studies suggest that olive oil helps prevent and some times treat var ious t ypes of cancer (colon, breast, ovar ian, prostate) because of the Vitamin E it provides. I n addition, it helps lower the total amount of tr iglycer ide levels, which cause a great r isk for hear t disease, especially for diabetics. Olive oil has always played a major role in the M editer ranean diet, providing a strong source of mono -unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats. These contr ibute to an overall healthy diet and can have positive effec ts on cholesterol levels, by helping to maintain a better bala nce bet ween HDL (“good ”) cholesterol and LDL (“ bad ”) cholesterol. Olive far ming and oil processing have seen a huge growth the latter years, not only because of the diet olive oil provides, but even more because of the possibilit y and the gamma of the olive fruit by-produc ts, such as drugs and soaps with medical proper ties. However, the impac t of the existing industr ies on the environment and its stabilit y is undoubtedly severe. O ur proposal was based on the way the olive tree operates. The olive tree, as a plant, collec ts so lar energy through ts leaves (photosynthesis) and water through its roots. Like so, the coronation of our sk yscraper is clad with solar cells which collec t solar energy and its lowest par t penetrates into the sea in order to collec t hydroelec tr ic energy created from the waves and the under water streams. O ur stategy was to place such sk yscrapers at five water front locations with edgy cliffs at the M editer ranean countr ies (Por tugal, Spain, I taly, Greece, Tur key) creating a net wor k that contr ibutes to the commerce of olive oil and its fruit by-produc ts and as a result to the financial development of each countr y.

The cylindrical volume contains the olive production unit. Except from this cylindrical volume, there is also a system of smaller fragments which surround it and contain the educational-research center, as well as a residential complex with temporary dwellings for visitors and permanent housings for those who study or work there. These fragments are at a distance from the production unit and attach to it with bridges-passages.

A NE W PRIMARY SCHOOL AND AN OLD ORPHANAGE FORM A UNIQUE NEIGHBORHOOD D ur ing our 6th semester we were asked to design an exper imental pr imar y school for the cit y of Patras, as par t of D esign Studio 6. The site of the projec t is located in “Sk agiopoulio” par k , one of the few planned green areas of Patras. The “Sk agiopoulio” or phanage is also located in the par k and in the site area. Having done a thorough research of the area, we realised that the or phanage was a ver y strong element and decided to make it par t of the synthetic process. O ur first goal wa s to create a k ind of interac tion bet ween the school and the cit y. R ather than having an isolated, protec ted school, we wanted to create an open interac tive common ground bet ween the students and the or phanage’s residents. To do that, we designed a pedestr ian road that crossed the par k following though the main street of the neighbor hood. As a result, an easier access to the school was provided to local residents. However, it of great imporatance to under line the fac t that the pedestr ian road also ser ved as the school ’s main cor r idor. The fac t that it ser ved as cor r idor, meant that it connec ted the classrooms with the yard and the rest of the school ’s facilities. Another focus point of the projec t is the school yard. We needed the yard to behave as a meeting point bet ween the school and the or phanage. To ser ve as a shared common outdour playground. The highlight the existence of the new neighbor hood, we placed a per forated shell over the yard , that connec ted the t wo buildings. The result was one entit y, one neighbor hood.

diploma design thesis FUTURISTIC ATHENS STATE OF PROJECT: ON PROGRESS estimated presentation date: february 2016 Supervisor: panos dragonas

A NE W GROUND IS SHAPED OVER THE ATHENIAN URBAN L ANDSC APE Objec t of this diploma design thesis is the futur istic Athens. Having studied about Tak is Zenetos ‘ “elec tronic ur banism”, Yona Fr iedman’s “spatial cit y ”, Archigram’s “ walk ing cit y ” or Superstudio’s “continuous monument ”, I star ted think ing about a new model of a future cit y myself. A new untouched sur face, a pure ground that would car r y architec tural programs beneath it. The new ground would be placed as a layer over the ur ban landscape of Athens, thus creating a new t ype of space bet ween the new model and the old cit y. M ore in par ticular, the idea is that the new sur face would be a green area with a natural charac ter and a unique landscape, where people would be able to cultivate. Under the sur face of the new landscape a new k ind of a spatial cit y with pr ivate and public spaces, would be shaped. These spaces would be inhabited by per manent residents who would live in small pr ivate spaces and interac t with each other in open-air common spaces and meeting-points. Wind tur bines would provide power to the new autonomous communit y, so that people would be able to meet their daily needs. The bottom sur face of the new cit y model becomes a t ype of an ur ban ceiling that shelters par ts of the old cit y. S er ving though as a ceiling, it also creates a new t ype of outdour space on the roof top of the old cit y ’s buildings. M ost of those buildings are empt y and aba ndoned. The only human ac tivit y that is located in the ground floor, has a commercial charac ter. One of the most interesting par ts about the thesis projec t, so far, are the var ious layers that are for med star ting from the new sur face and leading back to the old cit y ’s ground level.
