Fanfares for the Head of the Charles Regatta for 4 Trumpets

Fanfares for the Head of the Charles Regatta For Trumpet in Eb, 2 Trumpets in Bb and Alto Trumpet in F

Jason Huffman (2008)

Notes: General: Each ceremony is preceded by the prelude. After the prelude, an unspecified number of awards are given. After each winner is announce, the fanfare for the ceremony is played once. Every attempt should be made by each player individually to not playe the fanfare the same twice in a row. After all awards have been given, the fanfare for each ceremony is played one final time. The final chord of the fanfare is identical to the final chord of the postlude, which is then performed after this final playing of the fanfare. The fourth trumpet (alto) part is designed as a pseudo-conductor, this player leads the ensemble and their bell should be visible by all to help with coordination of the parts.

1st Awards Ceremony: Each time the fanfare is played, the player should choose a different line to start with. The player can either choose to stay with this line or move to another line following one of the dotted slurs. In the penultimate bar, whatever line the player has ended up on at this point, they should continue but they may choose which of two alternate sets of notes to play leading into the final chord.

2nd Awards Ceremony: Prelude/Postlude: The second and third players should alternate slowly, legato between the written whole note and the smaller note. In this alternation, the whole note should be slightly emphasized. The first player plays their repeated note gestures just after the beginning of each bar when they enter, this does not have to be the same duration in each bar.

Fanfare: The idea is similar to the Prelude/Postlude though here the players have a choice on each run through of the fanfare of which note in each bar they wish to alternate with the whole note. Only one of the smaller notes should be alternated with each time. Additionally the second and third players can choose to not do the alternation, instead playing a repeated note gesture. This can be played right at the changing of harmony on the dotted barline or just after. The player can choose to play between 1 and 5 quick repeated notes before the half note. It will be helpful for coordination for each player to slightly emphasize the change of harmony on each dotted barline, but these changes do not need to be precisely coordinated between the parts.

3rd Awards Ceremony: Prelude/Postlude: The fourth trumpet leads. Slightly after each change of note in the alto trumpet but note necessarily coordinated between the parts, the upper players play their flourish figures, being sure to cut off their half notes before the next note is played in the alto trumpet. These cutoffs again need not be coordinated.

Fanfare: Here, the entrance of each player marks the dotted barline. Only one player plays a flourish on each dotted barline, so players should listen down the line for coordination. Each player can freely move between their two staves or stay on the same staff and can also choose to approach their held note from either above or below as notated. In the third to last bar, all three lower parts play a flourish and hold their final note until they hear the first player hit their high note (Eb or Bb, depending on which line is chosen). The lower parts then cut off their held note and then play the last chord together after a short pause, the first player continuing to hold through.
