Building Design for Architecture Department DURATION: Oct. 2014 - Dec 2014 LOCATION: New Campus, Changsha University of Science & Technology, China Individual Work
This design starts from the analysis of integrated campus planning. After combining its result with architecture students’ demand for an independent teaching building, I finally decide to design a building which belongs to architecture department in the core area of campus.

Location analysis
Situation
- the co-existence of landscape and function
choosing the building’s location base on campus planning
dormitory canteens office buildings stadium
YunYing Lake library site
teaching buildings library landscape
This place is located in the new campus of Changsha University of Science & Technology. According to the campus planning, the whole campus is divided into two parts with a circular main road. The outer part of campus is the main residential area , while the inner part is the educational area .
East Gate
North Gate
This location is the connection between the university’s east gate and south gate
Different landscapes could be view from this location
Other people will also regard this location as a part of landscape too
Yunying Lake, the main campus landscape, is located in the inner part of campus. The new building will be constructed in the opposite direction of library beyond the lake and form a new core landscape area together with them. Because the students of architecture department are now arranged in the teaching building of design department and need an independent space for study and practice, the design of architecture department’s new teaching building should combine the features of both function and landscape.

The starting point of design how to ensure the function of architecture department building and make it a landscape as well. In addition, people should also be able to enjoy the feeling of freedom brought by the old environment of same location in this new building. Site

Space on first floor
Floor on second floor
Condition of Location: There is an elevation difference of 6 meter in a length of 177 meter in latitudinal direction
Concept generation The environment of this site will be kept to maximum extent. The problem of elevation difference will be solve with slightly slant natural slope: by controlling the gradient change of slope on each level, different floors of building could be connected together without stairs. The functional spaces are designed base on the gradient and relationship between neighboring floors, and the routes in the building are designed to meet people’s demand of free exploration.

Since all floors possess a degree of incline, the classrooms still require special treatments. While the floors of classrooms remain their original gradients, the spaces for study and interaction are transformed with horizontal floor. the spaces for walking are still inclined.

Crowded Street THE TRANSFORMATION OF HISTORICAL BLOCK
DURATION: Mar 2014 - May 2014 LOCATION: Chaozong Street, Kaifu District, Changsha City, China INDIVIDUAL WORK

We select an area that suffers relatively worse problems in the block to conduct our research. We interview residents about their opinions toward the selection of house removal or house transformation. Our research samples are divided into three groups, including old people (more than 55 years old), middle-aged people (aged between 30 to 55) and youngsters (aged between 15-30). Each group consists of 30 people.
Location analysis The site is located in the center of Changsha City. Although this block has a long history with several hundred-yearold protective historical buildings inside, crowded street and shabby buildings have left an terrible impression in local residents’ mind.
Small Shops Residential buildings
The result of interview is showed above: old people and middle-aged people are used to live in this area, so they don’t want to move away or spend a long time to wait for the removal and reconstruction of their houses. Therefore, they prefer house transformation. The youngsters appear to be indifferent to this issue. Most of them think that both selections are acceptable.
site situation
Wangda Plaza (the most prosperous business area) and Juzizhou Islet (a tourist area) are all next to this block. In this place, the old urban area has formed a sharp contrast with its new counterpart.
16
17
Main Problems
The undivided traffic: as the development of history, more and more cars drive into the street and courtyards that designed only for pedestrian. After the living spaces of residents are severely occupied by cars, people’s daily life become worse with chaos and danger.
Lack of vegetation: the street is so narrow that it’s impossible to plant large area of vegetation on both sides. The inner spaces of courtyards have also been gradually occupied by cars.
18
Narrow Street: for hundreds of years, people live, rest, purchase and walk on this same old narrow street. After the prosperity of people’s life, cars begin to enter this street while more and more shops are established on both sides. As for today, the development of tourism has brought a number of tourists to this place. Therefore, the traffic burden of this ancient street has become worse than ever!
Traffic flow: except for the undivided traffic in daily life, the appearance of tourist has taken the situation to a worse level. As a consequence, it is urgent to separate the traffic flow and bring the quietness back to local residents.
19
Findings
Goals of transformation:
1.get all cars away from this block. 3.reinforce and repair old buildings.
2.separate the traffic flows of resident and tourist. 4.bring vegetation into the block
Base on the respect toward local residents’ living habits, both the buildings’ current situations and residents’ original life styles are basically maintained in the progress of transformation. In the meanwhile, due to the narrow width of street, it is pretty difficult to transform this street in longitudinal direction. As a consequence, I start to consider the possibility in latitudinal direction.

The outcome of transformation
The block will have a clear order after the transformation. Local residents could still shop goods, enjoy sunshine, play chess just like before. The outcome of transformation are described as below: 1.The street in the middle can work as a small-scale culture exhibition in addition to its original roles as passage and market. 2.Vegetation is planted in courtyards to offer better place for children and old people to play and rest. 3.The walkways on the street-side shop provide another way to walk through the street. The addition of vegetation and architectural pieces (such as climbing wall and seat) also bring new vitality to this old block. 4.Under the walkway, some areas without shops are designed as a place for rest. It will be nice to play chess or poker right over there.

t h e N e w Ye a r p i c t u r e experience museum in Wuqiang County DURATION: Oct 2013 - Nov 2013 LOCATION: Wuqiang County, Hengshui City, Hebei Province, China Individual Work
Wuqiang County is famous for the production of New Year pictures. As a national intangible cultural heritage, Wuqiang New Year picture is the representative of whole Hebei Province in the field of traditional art. As a consequence, the county government established a New Year picture museum. But after several decades, the old museum has become outmoded. Because it is designed only for exhibition and cultural communication, this museum can no longer meet the demand of modern world. In addition, it is less attractive to youngsters of today too.

STEPS 1.Exhibition
2.First step: drawing I want to design a quiet independent place for experiencing New Year picture. Based on the analysis toward the production of New Year picture, I firstly summarize its whole process and divide it into several steps. Then I begin to divide and design spaces in accordance with each steps while using these steps’ chronological order to arrange spaces’ linear order.
This site is located in Wuqiang County of Hebei Province. Wuqiang County is a relatively small county surrounded by typical Chinese northern villages. I choose to build my museum on the roadside corner of a wheat field.
At the same time, I employ the change of rooftop to ensure that this building’s individual form could meet and demonstrate the most basic requirement. The walls are built with rammed earth to imitate the rural houses in the old days. However, concrete pillars are hided inside these rammed earth walls to reinforce the whole house.
1.Space for exhibition: New Year pictures will be displayed here, continuous average light is needed
2.Space for drawing: drawing, continuous average light is needed
3.Space for carving: slopes are needed to dry up these boards
4.Space for dye and air Owing to the nature of dye, these New Year pictures can not be exposed in the sun. Therefore, stack effect could be employed to speed up the airing
3.Second step: carving
4.Third step: dye
I hope that people could experience the charm of New Year pictures in an environment which looks like the wheat field they used to work in and the rammed earth houses they once lived inside. 5.Fourth step:air

Interior Rendering
The Wuqiang New Year pictures are generally completed in three steps which includes “drawing”, ”craving” and ”printing”. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx After finishing the drawing of original pictures, folk artists firstly will xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx carve these patterns onxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx wooden boards first, then wet and dry them up in the sun. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx When these boards are completely dry, folk artists will start to dye them and use them to print pictures. The printed New Year pictures will be aired afterwards. Rendering

Ward Building Design DURATION: Dec 2013 - Jan 2014 LOCATION: Nanjing University Hospital, Changsha City, Hubei Province, China INDIVIDUAL WORK
The current situation of Chinese ward buildings is relatively terrible. Although most of them are wellequipped, their icy environment can not bring warmth to patients who live inside. In my point of view, the goal of ward building is not just about treatment. It is the recovery of patient that matters. The interior and exterior design of ward building shall not only relax our patients, but also let them see the hope of total recovery. 36

design specification
form-creation
This is a ward building design for Nanjing University Hospital of Changsha City. Since most buildings in this site have been planned, so I could only use the central area in the north part of site to design my ward building. This new ward building includes departments such as medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, ENT, ophthalmology and so on.

Zoom: base on the rectangle shape of site, the main block of ward building is also designed as a same rectangle in scale so as to make the building suits the site better.
curve:add a curve on the main facade
Because the building is next to Beizheng Street in the north, so entrances for pedestrian and vehicle are designed here with facilities to separate these two traffic flows.
Curve: the southern part of this building are wards. I curve the end of straight line outward to bring beauty to the facade and increase the space of ward balcony.
Transformation: one point of this rectangle is cut up and transformed to become the balcony of each floor.
Stretch: the rectangle is stretched to form the main block of ward buildin
Stretch: the rectangle is stretched to form the main block of ward buildin

The entrances
The locations of ward building, outpatient building and emergency building are in a line with corridors to connect them in the middle.
The mortuary is located in the northwest of site. Although the distance between mortuary and ward building is relatively short, patients and their relatives still can not be able to go across the open space
Since the mortuary is located in the west, all public spaces and green landscapes of ward building are designed in its eastern part. The only connection between these two buildings is the garbage exit..
In addition to the purposed obstruction, visual barrier is still needed. Given such a situation, higher trees will be planted here in a high density. The traffic flows of vehicles and pedestrian are separated
