NEW ORLEANS MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY
M.Arch 5th Year
New Orleans, LA
This project is located adjacent to the University Medical Center LCMC Heath Campus. Part of our project was to conduct research to determine an ongoing issue within the New Orlean’s community, and propose a solution as we developed our program.
During our research, we came across findings that illustrated the high use of drugs and alcohol in New Orleans’ mentally ill patient population. It is also shown that the city has a high demand for mental healthcare, but not enough facilities to meet current needs. A large portion of mentally ill patients are often referred to healthcare facilities by the criminal justice system. It is common for these patients to be charged with substance abuse related crime and then sent to a mental health facility in order to provide a healthier alternative than prison. Our goal for this facility is to provide individualized care that is dependent upon their acuity level as well as create a space that can help reintegrate patients into society. This would be accomplished by providing spaces that are lacking in the existing urban fabric such as a free recreation center and a community cafe and grocer.

KANSAS CITY ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT
M.Arch 4th Year Kansas City, MO
The focus of this project was to infill a stretch of Highway I - 70 with an entertainment district. This specific portion of the highway is proven to be under used; it is also causing a divide between the historic River Market and the financial district of Kansas City.
The studio was split up into two main phases: the master planning phase and the venue design phase. Early on in the master plan phase, I focused on the division of the city and methods that could be used to improve this. The main method I used to solve this issue, was creating convergence points throughout my plan. These points would serve as a meeting place for high traffic streets, that would then disperse pedestrian traffic to main nodes throughout the city.
During the venue design phase, my main focus was how the venue could interact with the main convergent point in my plan. Some strategies I used to overcome this issue were designing a large video board that faces the main breaking area. This allows for those who are in the area to be engaged in the event, even if they do not have a ticket for it.
This project focused on the user perspective in two main ways: users who were there for the event, and users who were not there for the event. My design focused on providing the best experience for both users.

FIVE POINTS MAKER SPACE
M.Arch 4th Year
Denver, CO
In Collaboration with Kirk Blakley
The Five Points Neighborhood in Denver, Colorado is marked by unique connections. The name comes from the five pointed corners found throughout the neighborhood formed from the collision of Denver’s two major grid systems. Aggressive redevelopment threatens to gentrify the neighborhood by replacing the existing urban fabric with insensitive, placeless architecture. Amidst urbanization stands opportunity. Making is an act of discovery, both of the physical and the metaphysical, and has the power to change communities. Inspired by the colliding grids of Five Points, The Five Points Maker Space will inspire the exploration of one’s ambition by providing a contextually rich space that creates moments of wonder and discovery. The heavy concrete walls stand bare, a result of a collision, echoing the formation of Colorado’s peaks. The circulation articulates the form, at times eroding the form. Openings engage the duality of the Colorado sun, providing shade in the summer and warmth in the winter. The creative forces of nature embed the space in the existing context and creates moments of pause to inspire discovery through making.
