MOUNTAIN LAUREL PA STATE FLOWER
Visitors flock to Pennsylvania in late May and June to take in the beauty of the state flower in bloom. Governor Pinchot signed into law a bill naming the mountain laurel the state flower. Mountain laurel belongs to the heath family, along with blueberries, cranberries and rhododendrons. This evergreen shrub produces white, pink or purplish flowers, and as a result of hybridizing and research, there are over 80 known varieties. Mountain laurel grows abundantly in the PA Grand Canyon area, and an especially scenic route would be the Yellow Arrow Tours of the canyon area. For maps detailing the self-guided driving tours, please visit the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce, 114 Main Street, Wellsboro.

Festival Features Fun for All The Cowanesque Valley Outdoors Festival, slated for Saturday, Sept. 7, just east of Westfield along Rte. 49, across from the Champlin Cemetery, already has a slate full of great entertainment for the entire family, but, as Festival Coordinator C.J. Houghtaling said, “we are always looking to add more and more vendors — more entertainers, to entice more people to come out and enjoy the day by learning something new. With admission just $5 per car for parking, the CV Outdoors Festival is well on its way to becoming the best value for a fun-filled day to spend with family.” Back by popular demand to headline the entertainment for this annual event now in its seventh year is Tioga County’s very own incredibly talented Penny Eckman who will perform her much-in-demand “Penny Sings Patsy Show,” her tribute to country legend Patsy Cline. “For those who have never heard Penny sing as Patsy Cline, you’re in for a real treat, especially if you love Patsy’s classic hits such as “Crazy,” and “Sweet Dreams,” said Houghtaling. “When you actually compare Penny’s versions to Patsy’s, it is hard to tell who is who, Penny’s that good.”

Using science to explain magic, Jeff Boyer BUilds a tower of BUBBles to the delight of his yoUng assistants.
Additional musical entertainment taking the stage throughout the day include the Wise Guys, duo featuring 3 time Fiddle Champion Jeff Wisor on fiddle, mandolin, and banjo, and Pat
Carlineo on guitar offering a wide range of songs from traditional blue grass to popular country. Also back on stage by popular demand will be Jeff Boyer and his Science of Magic show. These three separate not-to-be-missed performances are guaranteed to amaze and educate kids of all ages this former science teacher uses simple scientific principles to perform classic magic illusions, makes objects change colors, brings light bulbs blazing to life, levitates items - and people - and makes things appear and disappear before our very eyes, all with a touch of comedy thrown in. Besides the stage acts, however, the real focus of
what the Festival is all about will take place at various booths throughout the Festival grounds, and that is: learning different hobbies and activities through educational displays, demonstrations and informative talks. From dinosaur bones to actual moon rocks that were brought back by the Apollo astronauts, courtesy of NASA, to local authors and craftsmen, there’s something for everyone, and the list of activities and entertainment keeps growing. In addition, there are special activities for the kids with a “Make It-Take It” Crafts Tent and a petting zoo. “We’ll have the alpacas, of course, plus a number of cats and kittens, dogs and puppies, rabbits, miniature goats and horses, and perhaps even a teacup pig,” Houghtaling said. “Petting Zoo Coordinator Karen Zink is always looking for more animals to include

For a growing number of visitors and Tioga County residents, the Green Free Library, located at 134 Main St., Wellsboro, helps to keep them informed, entertained, and in touch electronically with friends, relatives, and the world. The library is housed in a century-old mansion that is worth a visit just to see the original woodwork, stained-glass windows, and fireplaces, and is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library’s collection of over 54,000 items includes bestsellers and classics, trail guides for the weekend hiker, fly-tying for the fishermen, pattern books for knitters or quilters, masonry projects for the homeowner, beautifully illustrated books for young children, the latest sci-fi series for young adult readers, and up-to-date books on health and science issues. For those who like to listen to books as they drive to work, the library has an extensive collection of books on tape, CD, or MP3-CDs, as well as on Playaways, which are similar to iPods or MP3 players with the books already recorded on them. The video collection offers both videotapes and DVDs of current and classic films, as well as series on historical and other educational topics. The Hafer Room houses an impressive collection of Teaching Company materials, essentially college lectures in a box, on topics ranging from religion to history to art and literature. When you explore the Pine Creek Rail Trail, you’re following a route that humans have traveled for hundreds of years. Now the trail leads the adventurous through miles of outstanding natural beauty, from Wellsboro Junction to Jersey Shore. The 146,262-acre Tiadaghton State Forest is located
on the Allegheny Plateau, a rugged region deeply carved by stream valleys. Tiadaghton was the name of the Iroquois gave to Pine Creek, the largest tributary of the West brand of the Susquehanna River. Tiadaghton State Forest centers on the Pine Creek Valley. Here, mixed oak forests dominate the landscape, although northern hardwood forests of beech, birch, maple, ash, and black cherry cover the northern portion of the state forest, as well as some of its deep valleys. The Tiadaghton State Forest office is located at 423 East Central Avenue, South Williamsport, PA 17702, 570327-3450. The 165,052-acre Tioga State Forest contains valuable forest resources that provide a continuous supply of forest products for

Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania
Often described as “The Crown Jewel of Pennsylvania,” Pine Creek Gorge – The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania – winds its way through a vast wilderness landscape of breathtaking beauty that will capture your imagination and renew your spirit. The 47-mile long, 1,000 ft. deep gorge is no ordinary place, nor is a visit to Pennsylvania’s “Grand Canyon” ever ordinary. The uniqueness of the Canyon was recognized in 1968, when it was designated a Natural National Landmark by the federal government. Pine Creek Gorge is a classic example of a canyon cut during the Ice Age, primarily the result of water overflowing a former glacial lake (now the site of U.S. Route 6 west of Wellsboro) and eroding the relatively soft rock formation between Leonard Harrison (East Rim) and Colton Point (West Rim) State Parks. The exposed rock formations look much like those of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado and are best seen before May or after October, when they are not hidden by the canyon’s forested slopes, a feature that distinguishes eastern canyons from their drier western counterparts. The Canyon is managed for its scenic qualities by the Tioga State Forest District as an official Natural Area. A Natural Area is managed in the sense that nature is allowed to take its course without interference by human activity. Two state parks straddle the Canyon, looking down at Pine Creek and the Pine Creek Trail (Rail-Trail). Leonard Harrison State Park, the busier and more developed of the two, sits high on the East Rim and contains a Visitors’ Center and environmental programs explaining the natural history of the Canyon. 2013 Summer ENJOY!!!
Colton Point State Park sits on the West Rim and offers picnicking and primitive camping. Both offer short rim trails and challenging trails to the bottom of the Canyon featuring waterfalls along the way. While many think they have “seen the Canyon” from the state parks, the views from the parks offer only a small glimpse of the Canyon. There is much more to do, much more to see, and much more to experience for adventurers of all levels and interests: Hiking: For scenic views of the Canyon there are the Overlook Trail (0.6 mi.) and the Colton Rim Trail (1.5 mi.) at Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks respectively. But for really expansive views you may want to try the Barbour Rock Trail (1.0 or a 3.4 mi. loop) or portions of the West Rim Trail (Outside Magazine’s choice as “Best Hike in Pennsylvania,” April 1996). For views of the valley that held the glacial Ice Age lake, there are several trails in Ansonia (Mount Tom (1.5 mi.); Dry Hollow (1.5 mi.)). Backpacking you want? You can’t beat the 30.5 mi. West Rim Trail. You can get information and trailguides for these trails (and many others) locally or by mail. Bicycling: The Pine Creek Trail (Rail-Trail), presently about 52 miles long and growing, is an almost flat grade suitable for bicycles of almost any type and runs the length of the Canyon. This trail was named a “Top 10 Bike Ride” by USA Today in 2001. You don’t have to cycle the entire 52 miles: local businesses offer both bike rentals and return shuttles, making the 17 mile (3 hour) ride from Ansonia to Blackwell through the heart of the Canyon, easily done even if you haven’t been on
a bike in 30 years. The Pine Creek Trail, in addition to bicycling, offers cross-country skiing in winter and 9 miles of equestrian trail along the section from Ansonia south. And if mountain biking is your thing, the Asaph area north of the Canyon (and location of the Laurel Classic Mountain Bike Race each September) offers world-class mountain biking for intermediate and advanced levels. Rafting, Canoeing, & Kayaking: Pine Creek is a combination of moderate whitewater, long quiet pools, outstanding scenic drama, and sensory exhilaration around each bend. This is THE way to see the Canyon, but you are limited primarily to springtime (mid-March through early June), as Pine Creek has no
dams for water releases and is dependent on snowmelt and rainfall. If you are canoeing or kayaking, intermediate whitewater experience is recommended. For those without these skills, a raft (or guided raft trip) is recommended, or a trip on the Upper Pine, west of Ansonia. Birding: The Canyon was designated an Important Birding Area by the Pennsylvania Audubon Society in 2004. American Bald Eagles have been nesting in the Canyon since at least 1987, and they have raised up to three eaglets each year (with the exception of 1993) since this discovery. It is not unusual to see eagles close-up and in person in our Canyon, and nesting American Common Mergansers are quite common.

Cooking Fish over a Campfire
Cooking fish over a campfire is easy if you remember a few helpful rules. First build the right kind of fire with wood that is good to cook with. Control the heat of the fire by only cooking with the coals of the fire. For cooking, there is no reason to use pieces of wood bigger than your wrist. Use hardwoods whenever available. Coals from woods such as oak, ash an hickory burn hotter and last longer than softwoods. Softwoods such as pine, fir, elm and sycamore make very light coals that spark and can be blown easily by the wind. Use caution to keep a softwood fire contained. 4 medium fish filets butter or margarine • garlic powder lemon pepper • salt and pepper • aluminum foil Place fish on a large piece of foil. Add butter and seasonings. Wrap foil so that the seam is on the top. Place wrapped fish directly into hot coals. Cook for 7-10 minutes, and serve with salad, rice or veggies.
