Lagoons Development - Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates 24°31’55.13”” N 54°27’12.58´´E
Site Position Key Features:
Saadiyat Lagoons District is Saadiyat’s largest district. It is close to the island’s premier tourism and cultural attractions and is only minutes away from the business and entertainment hubs of downtown Abu Dhabi. Located close to Saadiyat Marina District, Beach District and Cultural District, it is well connected to the island’s exceptional educational institutions, world-class museums, and vibrant dining, shopping and leisure attractions.
Saadiyat Lagoons District is designed with a network of pedestrian pathways, bike paths and equestrian trails that encourage residents and guests to walk and cycle to different community facilities, verdant parks, and lakes – enhancing the experience of the district’s vibrant natural surroundings.

Projects 2015-2018 Concept Imagery
As with any development, balancing the conflicting needs of creating the best possible living spaces for the residents, against the constraints of limited water for irrigation and the need to maximise the development potential of the site to ensure financial feasibility is always a challenge.
The Lagoons development made extensive use of open bodies of water bodies as areas of focal interest around which public amenities could be arranged, which also cool the area through evaporation and heat sequestration.
As the Lead Consultants, GHD designed the layout of not only these spaces, but the entire site. As the design progressed through the design stages, our team designed these areas in greater and greater detail.

Key Features: Wadi As Sulei runs some 120 km on the eastern side of Riyadh. Primarily a drainage channel for run off during peak rain events, it is being upgraded to a civil engineering ele the city. Boedeker were brought ment handling runoff from in to deliver Landscape Architecture services so that it may function as an amenity for the residents of Riyadh too.

Along the promenade, a need for universal access connection between the sealed gravel pathways and the promenade became obvious. Not wishing to interrupt the throughow of the promenade, it made sense to clip these ramps onto the outside of the prmoenade. The space left from the creation of these ramps lent itself to the formation of a variety of seating areas, some
intimate, others solitary. Due to their positioning away from the throughow of the promenade, people can rest and chat without causing obstruction.

Key Features:
Thomas Heatherwick and his team designed Al Fayah park as a series of cracked pieces raised on columns forming a gentle dome across the site. The perforated canopy of par tial shade could allow a lush garden to grow, protected from the harsh excess of the desert sun. This sunken oasis was designed to then becomes a verdant landscape of plants and trees, forming a series of interconnected public spaces.
The 20 m high shaded garden is conceived as a place for families to gather and picnic, as well as a place for learning and festivals. By creating partial shade for the planting, the canopy aims to reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation, and improve the park’s efficiency and sustainability. Whilst providing shade in the daytime, the elevated plates also act as a network of social and meeting places in the cooler evening hours.

Whilst the design created by Thomas Heatherwick and his team was bold and extremely innovative, it posed a large number of technical challenges which needed creative solutions to overcome. GHD were appointed as part of the technical team to address these challenges and progress the design through the various design development stages and onto production drawings.
These challenges included a very high water table of toxically salty ground water, a constantly shifting solar pattern which required flexible irrigation programming and conflicting requirements for root space and structural foundations.
I was fortunate enough to lead the GHD team in resolving these issues, personally resolving most of them.

The irrigation system required great flexibility in order to be able to accommodate the constant changes in solar patterns and the way they impacted the water requirements of the respective plant species. The solution was to overlay the solar patterns on the planting plan, and design the irrigation system to allow for these sunlight shifts. We then selected irrigation controllers which could be programmed by
computer and have a number of different schedules loaded - 26 in all, allowing for a different programme every week which compensated for the changes in the localized evapotranspiration rate of each bed area. This required a complex system with many solenoids and flexible control systems.

The drainage within the park was another key element, as the park is to be constructed within a sealed bowl to exclude ground water penetration, which was too high in salts, and would have caused drowning of the plants, what with the interior level of the park being beneath the surrounding water table. The narrow tolerances on depths meant that working in conjunction with the Structural Engineers, we spent a great deal of time locating trees and designing mitigation measures to work with the structural requirements of the foundations.

Working with Kew Gardens, we workshopped a number of options for the planting palette best suited to the very dynamic nature of the park’s microclimate. Not only did we need to decide on a palette, but a number of planting soils that would fulfill the selected species’ nutritional and performance requirements, many of which are desert species used to low nutrient levels.

Key Features:
GHD are the lead consultants on the Conrad Hilton -Doha, a five-star hotel intended for business travellers to Qatar’s capitol city. As part of the team, the Landscape Architecture team undertook the design of the landscape areas around the hotel, which consisted of the porte cochere area and the pool deck on the roof. The multiple demands placed on these spaces for access, recreation and security required that a great deal of interdisciplinary coordination took place, in order to arrive at a workable solution for all parties. The pool area required special consideration to allow for the hot desert winds that sweep across the land and to make the most of the views out over the landscape beyond the development area. A rim flow pool capitalized on these views and flexible space planning allowed for multiple uses of space at different times of the day and night.

Projects 2015-2018 Concept Sketches
These sketches prepared in Sketch up studied the options for the port cochere area. The fixes included an LPG gas tank and filler point which could only be accommodated under the planted bed area, and the security requirement for a safe housing for the filler point which would conform to the bylaws and at the same time not create an eyesore. Further, the wall was to act as an element of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation. The very active nature of the porte cochere also required ease of access and as much VIP parking as could be accommodated, without constricting the through-flow of traffic and the safe passage of pedestrians.

As part of the development of the Khalifa City B area, the Abu Dhabi Municipality commissioned GHD to design four new parks at various sites around Shakhbout. These parks were to be multifunctional and to offer as wide a variety of activities as could be accommodated into the space provided. Playgrounds for different age groups were a prerequisite, as well as kick-about spaces and barbecue areas. GHD developed two options for each park from four different themes, and in consultation with the ADM, designs were selected and developed from the approved Concept Designs through to tender documentation.

p The parks were designed to one of four different themes, namely Wadi, Beach, Desert and Mountain. Creating multi-use space areas which offered as much shade as possible, whilst conforming to the tight water usage restrictions required creative solutions and zoning of hard and soft landscape areas for maximum effect.

p One park has a splash pad for kids to play in during warm periods, the other has a climbing structure that allows kids to clamber up and down steps and a small climbing wall. Another has a large sand pit area to allow kids to dig and play as if they were at the beach.
p Natural stone was introduced around the barbecue areas to create a desert feel to the picnic spaces, and to demarcate the individual spaces for each family or user group. Hedges were introduced to create privacy between different picnic areas, so families could feel comfortable without risk of intrusion.

Key Features:
The last of three towers in the Marina Gate Development, the client wanted a landscape distinct from the other two towers, as this would be a separate development without access to the other two, and was designed as a five-star hotel and residential apartment complex. The client opted for a curvilinear design on the landscape. The level differences across the deck, dictated by the swimming pool build up created various spaces which were allocated to different uses including a Paddle Tennis Court, multi-purpose activity area, a swimming pool, kids pool and play area and a raised restaurant area. The challenge of the different levels became an asset to the design of the landscape.

Projects 2015-2018 Concept Imagery
The strongest asset of the site is the unparalleled view along the length of the Dubai Marina, which was obviously a strong element to be celebrated within the design. Besides celebrating this view with a rim-flow pool, careful consideration was needed for the wind which required an extensive study due to the towers in the neighbourhood. Shading from these surrounding towers was another element which required design interventions on the pool deck.
A combination of travertine and wood surfacing is intended to mix softer elements with the resilience of stone.
