NECSA
Pelindaba, North West Province
Site Position
25°47’58.14” S 27°54’53.90´E
Key Features:
• The area was a disused laboratory and workshop complex which was to be redesigned to function as an exhibition center. • A gradient change across the area required treatment to work with the passive cooling designed for the building. • The existing mature trees were of considerable value and needed to be retained • The water features were to be cleaned by aquatic plants, and so non-chemical sterilization was required. • The space was to function for large volumes of people at a time, to be flexible to work as an exhibition space, and as an educational area. This dictated the size of flower beds, and enabled the use of an amphitheater as a means of managing the site level changes.

Scope:
Stages 1-5 - Initial concept design through to tender documentation and management of site execution Client Brief:
The Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA) approached the Principal Agent (I.G. Architects) to convert a disused area of their campus into a Visitor’s Center, featuring an exhibition space for science and in particular, nuclear science. The external car park space was to be converted to a courtyard. The space was to be able to accommodate large groups of people and be able to serve a number of uses. My Input on this project:
Involved from the beginning, I produced a number of initial sketch designs, before we settled on the final design. From there, I managed a junior landscape architect in our office whilst the plans were developed through to Stage 4 and put to tender. I managed the budget and site management of the implementation. Plant Palette:
The site is situated in a beautiful part of the world, surrounded by savannah thornveld. We selected the planting palette to reflect that, with a strictly indigenous choice of plants local to that area. We wanted the trees to blend into the landscape seamlessly. Prevailing Conditions:
The area is hot and extremely dry, with summer rainfall and cold, dry winters. Water is available from a nearby river, which made irrigation simple, and the irrigation water was used to top up th ewater features, which lost much water to evaporation. The light coour of the paving raises the SR value and reduces the heat island effect of the courtyard.

Site Position
33°56’20.26” S 18°28’2.99´E Key Features:
• Natural Swimming Pool, which uses plants to clean the water instead of chemicals • The design maximized the available space by manipulating existing levels, and created a larger outdoor living space for the family • The strong prevailing winds in the area meant that shelter had to be created, to offer year-round use of the outdoor space • The aquatic plants had to function both as an aesthetic element, and also as filters for the water • Various user needs had to be incorporated, including a cricket net, a tree house, vegetable garden, an outdoor seating and entertainment area and a swimming pool. Parking also had to be available, and multi-use areas were designed for this purpose, due to space constraints.

Scope:
Stages 2-5: Taking Client brief, develop conceptual plans, through to presentation drawings, Council Submission Plans, working drawings and tender documents, tender adjudication, site management, budget management, post-completion hand-over Client Brief:
To remodel the existing garden to make better use of the space, to create an external living space sheletered from the strong prevailing wind, to create a natural swimming pool which used natural processes to keep the water clean, to make a beautiful garden which would be a show-piece. Oh, and a vegetable garden too. My Input on this project:
Client brief, concept design and design development, technical design of pools, water filtration ponds, reticulation, water proofing specification. Engineering liaison, management of design development and documenta tion, management of contractors, certain procurement, payment certificates and and hand over Plant Palette:
The Planting palette was tricky, as we needed to source a variety of water plants which were unavailable in the part of the country in which we were working. We therefore had to build a list of plants which would work in the macroclimatic area, and then in the particular microclimatic areas of the garens, and then blend them according to the aesthtic we wished to achieve. We used as many indigenous species as possible, but unfortunately, we were unable to use a strictly indigenous palette.
