What is Architecture? To me, Architecture is a process that ones open their hearts perceiving the natural being of material, light, space, and time; by experiencing, recalling, and comprehending them in different contexts with others in the society; creating spaces that evoke memory, emotional, spritual resoance that reflects humanity. Furthermore, Architecture is not only a shelter, but also it is water for a withering leaf within souls.

The Design for the Columbus Athenaeum combines architectural design with museumspecific requirements within an overall framework of environmental sustainability. The museum seeks to become a threshold of nature and culture. The building itself embodies the concept of a museum while integrating natural and urban elements through the outward expression of structure and nature. Our aim is to create an inviting, vibrant, and unique space that celebrates local materials, wildlife, and community connections. Our proposal combines the existing culture and built environment with the abundance of natural wildlife creating a public learning environment for art, culture, and nature. The built environment and nature are often seen as two separate aspects that we seek to combine and accentuate through integrated greenspaces and unique construction methods with local materials. Columbus, Indiana is a walking city that has been blessed with great architecture, with this in mind we designed allowing for the public to have an open dialogue with the building and its interior spaces. Unlike most buildings occurring along the street with heavy closed off facades we interpreted the faรงade as layers that highlighted the structure and natural elements.

The overall design strategy incorporates the use of the abundant natural aspects of Indiana alongside the great architectural history that Columbus, Indiana has to offer. As populations increase cities begin to encroach on the natural landscape. Bringing more green spaces into cities will help incorporate the urban landscape and natural wildlife into the city. Introducing the people to local wood is a major¬ component of this project giving the building a sense of place in the city. Tall wooden columns mimic nearby trees and give the space great vertically and an openness. Sustainability is a newer aspect being introduced to Columbus, Indiana and this building is one of the first to allow an integration of sustainability, local materials, and architecturally significant building in the walking tour of Columbus, Indiana. Allowing for a more aesthetically appealing introduction to sustainability will give people a better understanding of how much of a key component sustainability can be to good design.

The project sits in the heart of the business center of Columbus, Indiana on the northeast corner of 6th and Washington. LEAF could potentially partner up with small local business in the district and promote the usage of biking. This could then create a bike share movement that Columbus, Indiana, is in dire need of. The first level of LEAF consists of a piazza, civic space that is open to the public. Not only can this athenaeum provide a relaxing place for local business to sit and have lunch but it can also be a place to promote and display the latest works of businesses. This plaza can house a local farmer’s market for businesses in and around Columbus, Indiana. With its overhang and civic space available, locals have opportunities for contributing to the heart of Columbus, Indiana through their innovative works. LEAF gives back to the community by creating a center for learning and economic growth. The light wood and glass construction of the main public spaces allow a vast amount of southern and eastern light to enter the building during the daytime. The canted roof allows for as much sun as possible to reach the interior from the west while allowing for maximum light to reach the solar panels placed on the main roof. There are also two green roofs atop private spaces that are raised above the main wooden roof allowing for light to reach plant life giving a hierarchy to the more natural elements in the building. The concrete enclosed living quarters are located on the most southern end of the building with specific openings for each living unit.
