My Process I

take a user centred design approach and apply science to it. My process has been derived from teachings at university in both design and ergonomics, combined with training received on the IBM Design Thinking course. This process is constantly being refined through my experience in the industry. The research methods I have learnt enable me to test my designs thoroughly, allowing me to say with conviction that the designs I produce will fit the customer requirements.

DISCOVER REAL ADVENTURE From local guides in the UK

Local guides can reach customers, take bookings and receive payment Adventurers can find and book real adventure from quality local guides

Odysseon Brief

Oct 2015 - Present

Realise the founder’s vision of a consolidated online marketplace for adventure travel through low to high fidelity prototyping.

Result After this was completed they saw the value of my work and hired me full-time to handle all of their design requirements. The company has recently pivoted to focus on shorter, low cost single day activities as a direct result of the market research I carried out. To go with the pivot, I gave the site a complete redesign to optimise it for finding shorter, activity based trips in a location. The redesign I carried out is currently being implemented for go live end of November with the addition of 350 new single-day trips.

J M LAW DESIGN // 04

The creation and management of trips, booking and payment needed to be optimized for all touch-points as it was going to be used by the guide when in location as well as by guides who may not have access to a computer.

Analytics

Testing

Analysing conversion rates and drop-off points highlighted areas where customers were having issues. Heatmaps were used to understand how people were using the search and filtering which raised question for the user interviews which followed.

Axure was used to test designs with customers and stakeholders before being given to the developers to build. Speaking to real people gave context to the problems found from the analytics. Such as the filters not being optimised for mobile which is where most traffic was coming from.

J M LAW DESIGN // 05

The nature of the company meant it was not always possible to work in the same room (let alone country) as the developers. This meant the creation of a living style guide to document my designs.

Being the sole designer meant creating everything from t-shirts to business cards to full page ads in the National geographic Traveller Magazine that has an audience of 4.2 million readers.

Kinook Brief

Oct 2015 - June 2016

There is a growing trend in using touchscreen interfaces on stoves because of their wipe clean properties. This presents difficulties for the visually impaired. Redesign the stove to make cooking safer and more intuitive for those with a visual impairment

Result 9 months of researching, sketching, interviewing, testing and prototyping resulted in a completely new concept for how one interacts with the stove. The prototypes were tested with visually impaired and simulated VI users who quickly understood the interactions and were able to use it safely.

Temperature adjusted by rotating the pan. Actions confirmed by audio, visual and haptic feedback. Induction hob with tactile elements for pan location. Fill level detection and boilover warning.

Interaction Design

Prototyping

To adjust the temperature, you rotate the pan around the centre point which means there is no longer any mapping of controls to burners. There are raised protrusions on the induction hob surface to aid the user in locating the pan into the correct position on the burner

Several prototypes were created to allow the different concepts to be tested. An aesthetic prototype was created to test pan location on the hob and attaching/detaching the handle. A vibrating handle mockup was also made to test the temperature adjustment interaction.

J M LAW DESIGN // 09

Testing The product was tested with sighted individuals wearing simulation glasses as well as with a maccular degeneration sufferers group. This, combined with visualisation simulation software allowed the concept to be tested with a range of different impairments.

Cut down on the amount of water you use by changing your diet

Receive personalised recipe suggestions based on your eating habits

Choose which meals to have when from a list of tailored suggestions

Clever shopping list can suggest ingredients which are less water intensive

Low2o Brief

May - June 2016

Design a product, app or service which educates individuals on their water consumption in order to reduce it.

Result When researching ways to save water, it was found that on average 56% of a person’s daily water consumption is from the food they eat. This figure increases when the individual eats meat more than once a day. To reduce water consumption I designed an app that track’s user’s diets and suggests meals which contain less meat and processed food.

Water Used in the Average Shower

Guesses

Research was done into the food industry and how much of a drain it is on the world’s drinkable water. From this there was a lot of advice on how cutting meat, dairy and eggs from your diet can greatly reduce your water footprint.

Actual

A survey was created to gain a better understanding of people’s shopping and cooking habits as well as testing the knowledge of their water usage. Some of the results can be seen to the left.

Understand 45% of those surveyed had attempted to cut out meat but failed. When asked why in the interviews their main response was that it was too difficult to make a filling and tasty meal without meat.

Water Used in Quarter Pound Hamburger Guesses

The opportunity identified was to reduce people’s water consumption by making it easier to cut meat out of their diet. For this to be done it would require a change in behaviour which is a process that if done right can be successful in 21 days. The app needed2,500 to Lsupport the change and make the transition as easy as possible. Actual

Co-Design People do care about water conservation, but only when it requires minimal effort on their part. Outcomes of co-design: In order to conserve water by changing people’s diets, the app needs to take away the painful parts of coming up with meals and remembering to buy the required ingredients. This should be done by planning for and circumventing the ‘hunger’ cue.

Test

Interviews, Observation, Role play, Card Sorting & Pop app are some of the tools and techniques which were used to test the idea developed. The new solution was tested against the as-is to quantify the impact that using the app would have on the success of their new diet.

Tonoful

be like thunder and lightning

Enhancing sexual pleasure for quadriplegic males

Tono Stroker - A redesigned masturbation aid which allows for mutual intimacy and enjoyment. Ful Vibrator - Control your partner’s pleasure using the ECG headband

For the paralyzed, sexual function is just as important as walking. - Tuppy, Sexual Health and Disability Alliance founder People often hold the misguided notion that disabled people can’t, don’t or won’t have sex. There is a stigma that unfortunately is often internalised by disabled people who often suffer with self esteem problems as a result. - The Undressing Disability Campaign

TARGET MARKET

EXISTING PRODUCTS

Couples where the man has a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and the woman is able-bodied, who wish to enjoy sex once again

A Penile Vibratory Stimulator (PSV) is a device used by those with Erectile Dysfunction due to SCI’s. The vibration promotes bloodflow to the penis. The current PVS’s on the market are very clinical and only focused on ejaculation and not pleasure.

OPPORTUNITY

• Increase interaction during foreplay • Stimulate penis in a less clinical way • Alternative way to control partners toy • Discover new erogenous zones

There are 3 vibrating, oscillating pads on the inside of the Ful Stroker which stimulate bloodflow in the penis. The oscillating pads are controlled by a myriad of sensors on the outer which respond to touch. The Ful Stroker can be stimulated by hand or can be inserted for mutual pleasure.

The Tonoful suite can be used together to provide mutual pleasure while ensuring the man’s vitals are at safe levels.

J M LAW DESIGN // 17

The silicone wings of the Tono vibrator fit under the labia, allowing a hands-free experience without the need for intrusive straps. When controlled via the ECG headband, it can give a truly hands-free experience.

Vibrations to the Ful Stroker are controlled by touching the outer casing with hands or any other body part.

The wrist unit houses a blood pressure and heart rate monitor which wirelessly syncs with the Tonoful app. Use the app to keep track of the various metrics and to set rehabilitation programs. Share the data with your physician to detect and prevent issues.

Seat Booking Tool Because of the high demand for projects to be based in the Studio there needed to be an online tool for booking seats, breakout areas and meeting rooms. The 3D model of the studio was created to be a fun representation of which seats had been booked. It was displayed on the interactive whiteboard on the entrance to the studio. As well as the functional

purpose of showing booked seats at a glance, it also had to be fun and engaging. Working with the developers we were able to add in fun features like moving characters, a cleaner after hours and beers on the desks on a Friday to represent Deskbeer Friday. The space was designed to encourage creativity and collaboration. It was therefore vital that all studio touchpoints represent that.

Icons were produced to represent the different bookable meeting areas.
