Director Semper Fit and Exchange Services Division Marines and Families: Taking care of Marines and their families is at the core of the Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) mission. It is our pleasure to provide Webbooks by litl to help us do just that. Through the corporate support of litl and Operation Homelink, we are pleased to present you with this Webbook to help loved ones stay connected during deployments. Once the basics of the Webbook have been mastered, you’ll be able to e-mail, video chat, and send MotoMail to stay in touch wherever your Marine is sent. This Webbook Guide also has information on the variety of services available via the world wide web that are supported by MCCS and the Department of Defense. In the Commandant’s Planning Guidance, his charge is clear; “we will keep faith with our Marines, our Sailors and our families.” Your MCCS family is here to support you through the entire deployment cycle; preparing, during and homecoming. Enjoy this Webbook to share those special moments, and we thank you for your support and sacrifice. Sincerely,

William C. Dillon

Welcome to the world of litl A NEW AND SIMPLE WAY TO ENJOY THE WEB

Thank you for choosing to explore the litl webbook – a completely new and simple way for everyone in the family to enjoy all the web has to offer. The litl webbook, an Internet computer, blends the engaging content and social interactivity of the web with high quality TVlike viewing of online videos, photos, and more. This webbook computer was distributed by Operation Homelink, a non-profit organization

based in Chicago whose mission is to support U.S. Service members and their families through the use of donated computers. This webbook was generously donated by the litl corporation as a tangible and very helpful way to support veterans, wounded warriors, and US Service members (including Active Duty, Guard, & Reserve) and their families.

Technical Support As an all volunteer non-profit organization, our limited resources and staff unfortunately do not allow us to provide technical support, training, or computer repair.

If the TSC assigned to your webbook is not able to answer your question or resolve your problem, they will contact the appropriate technical support personnel to resolve the issue.

As these webbooks are very straightforward and intuitive, we expect that answers to most operational questions will be answered by reviewing this “Using Your Webbook Guide” and the FAQs included in this User Guide.

Please note that, despite the listing of an 800 phone number and e-mail address on litl’s website, our arrangement with these donated webbooks does not include phone or e-mail technical support.

If you have additional questions or issues with your webbook, we ask that you please contact the TSC (Technical Support Contact) with MCCS who presented this webbook to you.

However, to make the experience with your webbook the easiest and most enjoyable, the good people at litl have posted video tutorials that can be viewed online at: www.litl.com/support

30 Day Replacement Warranty Operation Homelink offers a 30 day replacement warranty from date of delivery. OHL cannot be held responsible for any hardware or software issues due to installation of third party software —including AOL and other Internet software— if the system unit has been opened by the customer, or additional hardware installed. The replacement warranty does not apply if the webbook has been physically damaged, including but

not limited to dropping, spilling liquids, or other physical damage to the unit. If during the 30 days immediately following your receipt of the webbook, your webbook malfunctions as a result of a material defect of its hardware, please contact the person who coordinated your receipt of the webbook about a replacement. If you experience problems with the webbook after the 30 day period referred to above, sorry, but we are not able to replace the unit.

Set Up / Initial Update Please make sure the webbook is plugged into an outlet via the supplied power cord. To turn it on, open the lid so you can see both the screen and keyboard. Push the power button that’s recessed on the right end of the webbook’s hinge. You will hear a beep, and after a moment you will see the litl logo. Since the webbook runs very quietly and doesn’t consume much power, you may not hear a fan or other operating noise. If at any point you want to turn your webbook off, push the power button and hold it down until you see the screen shrink and then go black. If unplugged, your webbook should run for approximately 2.5 hours on a full battery charge. You’ll now be presented with a list of all available local Wi-Fi networks. Make sure you know the name of your network, and if applicable, your username and password. Click on your network, enter the password and then click “connect”. After the webbook has successfully connected, click on “continue” at the bottom of the page. We suggest that you do not use a hidden network with the webbook. If you have MAC filtering enabled on your network, the

hardware address is on the bottom left to configure your router. The litl is designed to work wirelessly. If you do not have access to wireless Internet, connecting to a hard-wire Ethernet line will require a USB to Ethernet adaptor which can be purchased online or possibly at a local computer store. After connecting to your network, you’ll be asked to read and agree to our licensing agreement. Clicking “OK” takes you to a page where you are asked if you own another litl. Please select “No”. You will now be at the registration page. Please fill out the form. You may add a photo of yourself if you would like (optional). Click the confirmation button at the bottom to move on. Your litl webbook is now ready for full operation. As soon as you are connected to Wi-Fi, the operating system will automatically start updating itself to the latest available update. Depending upon your internet connection quality and speed, the update process could take between 15 and 45 minutes, during which time the screen will read “Update in process.” Please do not interrupt the updating process, as doing so could cause errors. Once the updating completes, you are ready to enjoy all of your webbook’s great features. WEBBOOK GUIDE 2012

Card Catalog litl will prepare your cards and you’ll then reach Card View, your litl’s default home. You will see a set of four blue cards, some cards with black or white at the top, and a gray card. [Blue cards] Permanent litl cards: The Card Catalog, Family and Friends, Mediawall, and Settings cards. [Black cards] Channel cards: These cards bring you familiar content from the web, but in a new, exciting way. Depending on how we’ve set up your litl, you may see channel cards bringing you everything from news headlines and local weather conditions to an alarm clock and your Facebook status. [White cards] Standard website cards: These are ready for you to click into and start using in the litl’s web browser. [Gray card] New Web Card:
Creates a new web card for any website that you’d like to visit. In the new card, enter a website address at the top of the page: examples: www.yahoo.com and www.wikipedia.org

WEBBOOK GUIDE 2012

Click the magnifying glass icon on the top-right of the card to use the Google search feature. Cards can be added, rearranged (by dragging them), and/or deleted (clicking the “X” in their top-right corner). Both the blue litl key on the keyboard and the litl logo on the screen toggle between the default view and the card that you are using. [Card Catalog]
Pre-loaded with a mix of familiar websites and exclusive offerings. The catalog features useful web applications, productivity tools, entertainment channels, news sources and social media sites. [Settings Card] This card gives you information on your remaining battery life, the ability to change your screen brightness, clear passwords and browsing history, change wireless network, etc. It is crucial that you do not click on the UNLINK button.

[Mediawall] Add photos from your flickr, Picasa, shutterfly, SmugMug or Facebook accounts. Now you can browse, sort, and view a slideshow of your favorite photos. The best way to enjoy Mediawall is in easel mode. You may also upload your photos from a digital camera to your online service through the Mediawall. Just plug your camera into the webbook, via the USB port, and follow the on screen instructions. [Family & Friends] This card is used to connect and share with others who have webbooks. [Easel mode] Pick up your litl and gently rotate the screen back around the hinge so the device can stand upright. You’re now experiencing the litl webbook’s easel mode.

bedroom, laundry room, living room, or home office. Spend a few minutes experimenting with channels. If you flip the webbook back into laptop mode, you can create a litl channel from any web page that has an RSS feed. Navigate to your favorite news site, blog, or Flickr photostream in the browser and click “add channel” in the top right corner. This will create a black channel card that can be enjoyed full-screen in easel mode. Channels can also be created using the Card Catalog. If you want to explore a headline that you’ve seen in easel mode, flip the webbook back into laptop mode and you’ll easily find it.

Using the blue scroll wheel on the hinge, slowly flip through your available channel cards. Think of these channel cards as more like TV channels, to be viewed as you walk away from the webbook and move around the room. It’s a different way to enjoy the content in places like the kitchen,

Browsing the Web You can browse or search the internet by clicking on the “Browse the web” card. You can either go up to the URL (web address) window at the top of the screen and enter the website address directly –or- click on the magnifying glass in the upper-right, to search for something online.

E-Printing Printing from your webbook is possible only thru use of a printer that has e-printing capability (technology which sends an e-mail to your local printer), provided your webbook has access to and has been configured for e-printing. Testing has shown that newer, affordable HP printers with e-printing capability have worked well with litl webbooks.

More information on e-printing can be found at: www.hp.com/go/ePrintCenter

Webcam To utilize the built-in webcam requires an Internet-based video conferencing program. A currently available site that seems to work well is www.koowy.com. Go to that site and follow the prompts to utilize the litl’s webcam. (Note that litl is not designed for, and will not work with, the program-based video chat programs including Skype.)

Frequently Asked Questions TURNING THE LITL ON AND OFF To turn on your litl: Press & hold the power button on the right side of the hinge until you hear a beep.

My litl screen has gone dark and won’t start, what gives? The litl needs power. Plug in the power cord and restart. Everything should be how you last left it.

To turn off the litl: Hold down the power button for a few seconds, you will see the screen shrink down to a dot and go black, then release. To restart: Turn off, wait a few seconds, then turn on.

Connecting to the Internet How does the webbook connect to the Internet? The webbook needs to be connected to the Internet to function. It does so wirelessly via a modem and/or router - this is also known as Wi-Fi. The signal that produces Wi-Fi comes from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). To get Internet connection and Wi-Fi in your location, you need to contact an Internet Service Provider and sign up for service with them. Some popular ISPs are Comcast, Verizon, AT&T

and Time Warner Cable. When the service is hooked up at your home, you should be provided a modem and router. Sometimes they will be one integrated product, but you may also need to purchase these separately. The modem and router create a wireless network to which your webbook connects. WEBBOOK GUIDE 2012

| 11

I don’t see my wireless network on the list. How do I find it? It is likely that you have a hidden network. A hidden network does not broadcast its existence, usually for security reasons. If this is the case, you will need to enter its name specifically so the litl can find it. Then click on “Connect to hidden network,” near the bottom of the wireless settings screen, and enter the name of the network when prompted. You should then be on your way. If you are still having problems you may want to restart your modem and router or contact your network administrator. Using the webbook outside the home The webbook can connect to public Wi-Fi signals, typically referred to as “hotspots.” The public library, coffee shops and transportation hubs are all popular places that have hotspots. Some of these will be free, but others will charge for the connection. Both types may ask you to log into their network.

12 |

WEBBOOK GUIDE 2012

Use caution; not every public internet Wi-Fi signal is created by legitimate sources.

Which Wi-Fi network to choose? By default, the webbook will attempt to connect to any nonsecure/non-hidden or “public” Wi-Fi network that doesn’t require a login. The first time you use the webbook, it will prompt you for which network to use, but after that, your choice becomes automatic. Therefore, you may want to doublecheck which Wi-Fi network you’re connected to by going to the litl OS home page and open the Settings card, then click on “Wireless.” This will show a list of Wi-Fi hotspots (networks) in your area. Make sure that your webbook is only connecting to your own Wi-Fi network.

Family and Friends Why do you need email addresses for my family members? Names and e-mail addresses for your family members allow other litl users to find and invite your family to become litl friends.

What’s the difference between family and friends? •

litl “family” is the group of people all using your litl or linked litls. Be sure to add (and verify) the names and e-mails of each family member. This way, other litl users can find and invite your family to become litl friends.

litl “friends” are other litl users outside your family with whom you can share cards and channels. To find friends, search by name or e-mail in the Family and Friends card, then send an invitation with a personal message.

What is linking and unlinking? If you have more than one litl, linking means that they will have the same channels (black cards). The alarm clock settings and the web cards, however, are unique to each litl. You can name each litl in the settings card.

Want to unlink? When you want a litl to be separated from the other litls in your household, you can unlink it in the settings card. When you restart the litl and it asks if you have another litl, click no to keep it unlinked. If you want to re-link it, click “yes” and enter the “Magic Words” that you can get in the Settings section from one of your other litls.

WEBBOOK GUIDE 2012

| 13

Card Catalog What is the card catalog? The card catalog is a collection of cards you can add to your litl. Here you can find special litl channels, news channels, and photo channels that we think you might find useful.

Which of my cards will work in easel mode? All of your channel cards (black cards) and mediawall work in easel mode. You can watch videos in easel mode (such as from Hulu or Youtube) by first making the video full screen in laptop mode, then flipping it into an easel.

Channels What are channels?

Special litl Channels

The litl uses several types of channels (in card view as black cards) to display feeds from websites as slide shows and article readers. You can share these channels with your litl friends, or if you have multiple linked litls in your house, they will have the same channels.

We have made special channels for weather, time, Facebook, and movies. You can add these to your card view through the card catalog.

Photo Channels Photo channels turn your online photos from flickr, Picasa, SmugMug, and Shutterfly into fun slide shows. To make a photo channel, open a white web card to the stream, set, or album, and click add channel in the toolbar. You can also make a photo channel under album view in Mediawall.

14 |

WEBBOOK GUIDE 2012

News Channels News channels take feeds from blogs and news sites and present headlines and article summaries to you. To make a news channel, use a web card to go to the website, then in the right hand side of the tool bar, click add channel. Once you have your news channel, you have the option of going back to the web page, sharing your channel, or viewing articles or pictures as a slide show.

Easel Mode What can I do in easel mode? Easel mode is an exciting way to view your litl channels. Turn your litl into easel mode and use the wheel and the go button to change channels and browse headlines or photos. Easel mode works great with news and photo channels, Mediawall, Youtube, Vimeo, and Hulu videos.

Web Browsing What kind of security does the litl use for the web? The litl’s operating system has many security features built into the system to protect you and your information. Saving Passwords The litl allows you to save passwords for websites. If you don’t want to save your passwords or if you want to clear them off your litl, you can do that in the Settings section under “Web.” Note that passwords are only saved on the litl you are using, not across multiple litls.

Web Pop-ups The litl automatically blocks all web pop-ups, but gives you the option of viewing pop-ups for certain websites. For websites with pop-ups, a bubble will appear and you can select your options. To clear all of the exceptions you’ve made, use the “Web” tab in the Settings card. Can I see the text bigger? Or maybe refresh the page? In full view, move the arrow to the tool bar and click “more” to access the find feature, change the text size, refresh the page, and more.

How do I bookmark?

How do I leave a card?

Leaving white cards open on your card screen are the current version of bookmarking. There are many choices for websites that save your bookmarks online, such as Delicious.com or even Yahoo.com.

To go back to card view, use the litl button on your screen or the litl key on the keyboard. You can also delete the card by click on the “X” in the upper right.

How do I search? The default search engine on the litl is google.com. The first way to search is to click on the “Search the Web” box on the top/right of your screen. After you have entered your search criteria, hit the return key (you can also click on the magnifying glass icon). Your results page will open before your eyes. You may also open a “New Web Card” (hint: has a big plus sign on it). The litl will open a blank web page and you can use the search icon at the top of the page. How do I browse the web? In card view, click on the gray “New Web Card” (it has a big plus sign on it) to open a blank web page. Then, type in a web address, click on one of your most visited sites, or click on the search icon for a Google search.

16 |

WEBBOOK GUIDE 2012

Does the litl support shortcut keys for browsing the web? Yes it does. Some of the more handy key commands when you are in full page view are: •

alt-tab: display and choose from the different webcards you have open

ctrl-c: copy selected text to the keyboard

ctrl-v: paste

ctrl-k: search the web

ctrl-n: new window

Spacebar: scrolls down

Arrow Keys: scroll up and down on a web page

Printing Printing with the litl webbook The current option for printing e-mail attachments and documents from Google Docs is to use a web-connected printer. The Hewlett-Packard e-print line (http://bit.ly/9WsHeP) has worked well in our tests.

All you have to do is e-mail what you want printed to a special e-mail address that corresponds to your printer. There are some limitations depending on what brand and model you select.
