TYPE CLASSIFICATION POSTER SERIES
JUSTIN MARK
RESEARCH
These are some rough preliminary sketches of what I thought I might want to do for this poster. It was basically my brainstorming process.
Selection
This was the sketch that I decided to use for my final forms. I felt like this sketch was the best because it would allow me to create a poster series that all had a very similar feel. I also felt like this design was the cleanest and still gave me room to create an aesthetically pleasing look.

Old Style type came along during the late 1400’s. This was the begining of printed type. Up until this time books, and records were written by hand. This new technology met with heavy resitance from the scribal tradesman and the general public. This new style of type was cut from woodblocks and was less calligraphic than hand scribing. Some type characteristics of the old style typefaces are a moderatly left oblique stress, bracketed serif strokes, low contrast e.
Modern type characteristics include little to no bracketing on serif strokes, little or no vertical angle of stress, very high contrast between thick and thin strokes, and the width of characters are narrower than transitional and they are aesthetically precise and mechanical.

The transitional style of type ocurred during the 1700’s and is understood as the period between old style and modern type. The distinguishing features of the transitional typefaces are slight oblique stress angles, characters that are narrower than old style and serifs that are lightly bracketed. Transitional typefaces have a medium x-height compared to the cap height and have a medium contrast between thick and think strokes.

I really liked the overall layout but I knew I had to make some changes to make a product that I really appreciated.
Mockups Round 2
I really liked the “t” letterform in my first mockup so I decided to keep all of my letters a “t.” I also lined up all of my classification names and limited my typefaces to three to keep it clean. I changed the background because I thought it was distracting and threw on a light shadow so it still had a nice feel. I also changed the highlighted typeface being used to a rounded rectangle.

I decided to take off the background because I felt it retracted from the content and informative side of this poster. I also decided to highlight the typeface being used even more by making it a different color than black. I decided to switch from my dark blue to a red because I felt it functioned better and looked more professional.
