Technology News Google Photos for Chromebooks is getting a video editor and movie maker Originally published by Nathan Ingraham on July, 27, 2022 Later this year, Google Photos is going to get a significant update that has the distinction of first arriving on Chromebooks. According to a Google blog post, Google Photos will get a new movie editor and video editing features this fall as part of an update to Chrome OS. From the sound of things, it’ll let users make videos similar to the highlight clips the app already automatically makes. You’ll be able to select a theme as well as people or pets you want to feature in it; from there, Google Photos will pull together a movie using video clips and images from your library. It’ll be smart enough to scan longer videos and pull out specific clips to include in these new creations as well.

While it’s no surprise that Google is including an automated tool, the company is also including the ability to start from scratch, adding video clips and photos in any order you like.

The app will let you adjust things like brightness and contrast, trim clips as you see fit, add title cards and music and apply Google’s Real Tone filters that work better with non-white hairstyles and darker skin.

Google isn’t saying yet if these video editing features will come to the mobile apps for iOS and Android, but Google Photos has usually had feature parity regardless of platform, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see these tools expand past Chromebooks before long. In fact, the video editor will be built into an optimized version of the Android Google Photos app specifically built for larger screens.

The app will also seamlessly work with the Files and Gallery Chrome OS apps, so you can open a video in the Gallery app and immediately move it right over to Google Photos for editing or including in a new creation.

There are numerous other handy updates planned for Chrome OS coming in the next few months.

Another new Google Photos feature will allow Chromebooks to access your library and use those pictures for background wallpaper; like other Chrome OS wallpaper options, you can pick a specific album and set it to change daily. The aforementioned Gallery app is going to get PDF editing features, so you can fill out forms and sign them if you’re using a Chromebook with a stylus. That feature is coming next week. There’s also a new Cursive app for capturing and organizing hand-written notes; those can be copied and pasted into other apps or exported to PDFs for, depending on how you need to share them.

MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY UPDATES YouTube creators can now quickly make Shorts from their long-form videos Originally posted By Matt Binder on July 28, 2022 YouTube Shorts, the company’s short-form video TikTok competitor, has proven to be a big success for the platform. But YouTube is still synonymous with its longer content and its well known long-form content creators. To help remedy this, the platform is releasing a brand-new tool to help YouTubers pull 60-second clips from their existing long-form videos and quickly create content for YouTube Shorts.”We want to empower creators to easily take a moment from one of their VODs [videos-on-demand], bring it into our tools and easily edit it into an engaging Short for their viewers,” said YouTube Shorts creation product lead Vadim Lavrusik in a statement provided to Mashable.

This new feature, announced by YouTube in a post on Thursday, will start rolling out today and should reach all mobile users in the next few weeks. The tool is only available within the YouTube app on iOS and Android devices.

“To use this feature, all creators need to do is to navigate to their channel and choose a video that they’d like to Edit into a Short,” explained Lavrusik. After clicking the “Edit into a Short” option while on the watch page for one of their own videos, “they’ll be able to choose a video segment up to 60 seconds in length to create a new Short with,” he continued.

“Similar to importing a video from your device gallery to create a Short using our tools, this simply allows you to import a segment from one of your already uploaded YouTube videos.”

In addition to expediting the process of clipping longer videos, creators will also be able to add additional content to the Short, if the clip is shorter than the 60-second maximum length to make a YouTube Short video. This could help creators add additional context or new updates to Shorts they make from older long-form clips. Creators can also utilize all other YouTube Shorts editing features such as filters, text, and more.

Winamp died! And then it came back! Then it died again! And now it’s back once again, as the first releasecandidate of the re-resurrected Winamp 5.9 has been made available for download to a new generation who years agotransitioned away from MP3 files to streaming services.

The transition from buying music on physical mediums like compact discs to distributing it digitally directly to computers and mobile devices was a bumpy one. Copying CDs, or ripping the digital files they contained to a PC, was always relatively easy, but the small file sizes of MP3s made digital music files portable and easy to share on the internet, sparking uproars over piracy. Music sharing apps like Napster, Bearshare, and Limewire came and went, but through it all, one app remained a loyal companion to those who’d amassed massive collections of MP3s: Winamp, a lightweight but fully-featured media player that worked without the bloat of other offerings like Apple’s iTunes or Microsoft’s Windows Media Player.

As the music industry finally figured out ways to securely sell music files online, and eventually transitioned to streaming services where users never actually ended up with thousands of media files stored on a device, the need for a standalone media player like Winamp faded away, and after the app changed owners a few times, active development ended with version 5.666, released in late
