For layouts, I like simple minimalist designs. I feel like it allows the page to breathe and emphasizes the main components of the page. In addition to that, I like negative space, unconventional positioning of text, image and decorative elements, as well as subtle hints of textures or organic shapes, and contrast in size, color, font, etc.

The First Project

Shadows pre-fall 2015

This collection is based on the concept of shadows. In its literal sense, I explored the definition of shadows, its characteristics, shapes, and transformations. In its nonliteral sense, I looked into the jungian psychology notion of shadows. This brought me to design a collection that is transformable, features a lot of drapery. and explores different depth of the color black.

For this collection, I wanted to solely use black. Although it is the only color in this collection, even black has an endless amount of different hues and shades. I wanted to create constract between garments of an all black outfit by using black that differs in shade, tone, hue, quality and texture. The single color palette will put the focus more on shape and silhouette but these differences will create a constrast that is more interesting to the eye.

PROCESS

PROCESS | S k e t c h e s When designing this collection, I focused mainly on silhouette and on details that would create folds and pleats in the garment in order to create shadows. During my process, I had a few shades of grey but eventually decided to omit them. The knits were a bit more challenging to illustrate but it was much easier to have a drape reference.

In drawing class, we have been exploring with different mixed media, especially collage. I’ve never done collages before, therefore I definitely thought it was quite interesting. It is a challenge at times to think of new ideas, but it is a very fun process and I enjoy it quite a lot.

FLATS

I really enjoyed the process of this project that included observing, drawing, draping and sketching. However, I wish there was more time to develop the collection a bit further and to create a more satisfying final collection. In conclusion to this project, I have defintely found myself liking to drape more, especially with knits. I think I’ve already learned quite a lot during these past 2 months and will apply the lessons that I have learned from this project onto the next one.
