SOCIALISM
Indians always shouted for socialism The people were shouting for socialism across India.
All political parties stood for socialism.
There were non to oppose socialist ideology.
Pandit Javaharlal Nehru , the first Prime Minister of Independent India , too spoke of Socialism.
Indira was his daughter. She too spoke of Socialism.
Even after 27 long years of Congress rule didn’t bring Socialism. People were dissatisfied and angry. Opposition political parties were trying to oust Indira from power.
The constitution itself was a hindrance in doing something to the poor.
The Constitution upheld the rights of the wealthy.
Socialist ideals only could be preached.
Most people were illiterate. Any benefits to the socially and economically backward class failed to reach them.
All schemes to empower the poor ended in the pockets of the rich.
The caste system took its toll.
Low caste people, the so called untouchables, were denied education,
Education , right to civil liberties. They were treated as animals.
Communalism was another threat the nation had to face.
The ties with United States were in bad shape
United States would like to unseat Indira.
The opposition parties too wanted to unseat her
The opposition started an agitation to force her step down.
Indira declared State of emergency on July 1975.
It lasted 21months.
It was repealed on march 1977
This period is often described as a notorious period.
Press censorship
An end to caste discrimination.
Hindu tea and Muslim tea disappeared. In it’s place, you got tea for the first time since independence.
The repeal of emergency didn’t bring back “Hindu” or “Muslim” tea.
The emergency and 42nd amendment of the constitution changed the Indian society for ever
These changes couldn’t be reversed.
Any progress India has made, owes it to Indira.
