n the dusty roads of Arizona I recently drove the car of my dreams – a Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible. I stepped on the pedal and there was that divine roar. One, two, three, four I counted… and we shot smoothly from 90 to 190 km/h! Adrenaline pumped through my body and the speed almost overwhelmed my senses. I only throttled back to the permitted 110 km/h when I spotted a colleague standing in a lay-by next to his blue Bentley in the company of… the Arizona police. Road testing the Bentley made me realise that the dividing line between the sexes is not so chasmic. It can be easily bridged by a shared enthusiasm. Though the only woman in our group of 16 journalists from around the world, for a few days I managed to cross over that line – ceasing to be a delicate nymph-like creature and becoming a respected peer within a clique of motor buffs. This spring issue of Luxury guide has undergone a similar transformation, while brimming with novelties as usual. It not only boasts a dynamic new layout but has also become comprehensively unisex, devoting equal space to both male and female pleasures. An interview with former 007 agent Pierce Brosnan is preceded by an overview of compelling horological gems from this year’s Geneva SIHH exhibition. This spring’s hottest trends are alternated by coverage of the show-stopping IWC Race Night party where Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg and actor Kevin Spacey vied for the leading role. Luxury Guide offers exclusive interviews, profiles and articles for men and women who have one thing in common: they enjoy life to the full. Tear away with us at 190 km/h!

t rarely transpires that the season’s major cinematic event also coincides with the season’s fashion highlight. However, for Australian director Baz Luhrmann, director of a new film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby – due for release in May – stylish set design has always been as important as a good script. Luhrmann loves to delve into the past and then wrap a contemporary aura around his chosen theme, as if rekindling the sparkle of a long-faded diamond. He previously demonstrated his mastery of this trick in the films Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge. In The Great Gatsby, Luhrmann takes us behind the scenes of 1920s New York high society, where a tragic story of unrequited love unfolds. Wealth and intrigue versus love – an eternal theme... The lead roles are carried by cinematic heavyweights including Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, while answering for the costumes is none other than Miuccia Prada who like Luhrmann is experimental with period details. For the film she designed a collection of more than forty unique cocktail and evening dresses inspired by selected creations from Miu Miu or Prada fashion shows over the past twenty years. To the ball at Gatsby’s opulent mansion she has sent glittering silk gowns embroidered with crystals, sequins and playful fur fringes – certain show stealers at any party today. Bohemian life Frey Wille meets Egon Schiele. Schiele, one of the most significant artists of the Viennese avant-garde movement of the early 20th century whose expressive nudes and self-portraits executed in intense colours and lines penetrate the soul, has inspired Frey Wille, the iconic enamel jewellery brand, to create its new bohemian collection Hommage à Egon Schiele, now available in the brand’s Prague boutique.

Male strenght Spring clears the way for new scents but perennial favourites don’t rest on their oars as demonstrated by Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extrême. Men who like to distinguish themselves with this fragrance now have the opportunity to acquire it in a man-sized 150 ml bottle priced at CZK 2,980. A novelty that should not escape your attention is Trussardi My Land, a provocative scent that opens with citrus notes of green mandarin and bergamot, fusing with heart of lavender and violet and then rounded off by vetiver and tonka bean. Available at selected perfumeries, EdT 100 ml / CZK 1,999.
Unprejudiced Bottletop bags are made from the ring pulls of used tins. Although this unlikely material may fill you with suspicion, worn across the shoulder these bags look delightful. Their designers Cameron Saul and Oliver Wayman, previously involved in the fashion and music business, joined forces with the director of a health centre in Salvador, Brazil, employing local women to produce the bags in return for a decent wage. In Prague these stylish and ethically produced bags can be obtained in the Radost Shop.

Roger Dubuis makes timepieces that are dramatic, playful, extravagant, bold, but above all innovative, instantly discernible from the competition. At this year’s SIHH watch fair the brand displayed itself with theatrical exuberance. A large live eagle handled by a falconer in medieval dress dominated the stand, not only symbolising the city of Geneva but also hinting at the brand’s most popular collection, the Arthurian Excalibur line, comprising gold ladies’ timepieces set with diamonds and men’s skeleton tourbillon watches such as the splendid Quatuor Silicium or the Table Ronde. Every year the French jewellery house and watchmaker Cartier presents new pieces for women and men. At this year’s international watch fair in Geneva, Cartier showcased several novelties including a new model from its iconic Crash collection that was first introduced in 1967. The collection has an interesting history: A watch damaged in a car crash was brought to Cartier in London. Completely fascinated by its random deformation, JeanJacques Cartier used it as a template for a watch that in limited editions and various modifications has been a bestseller ever since. This year it appears in a rose- or white-gold incarnation set with diamonds. CARTIER BOUTIQUE, PAŘÍŽSKÁ 2, PRAGUE 1, PHONE: +420 221 709 000, WWW.CARTIER.COM

POCKET WATCH TOURBILLON GMT CERAMICA This year OFFICINE PANERAI presents something truly exceptional – the PAM00446, a skeleton pocket watch with a tourbillon, the first model of its kind from this renowned Italian manufacture. The 59-mm case with its classic Radomir modelinspired shape reveals the brand’s signature hand-wound mechanical P.2005/S calibre with a 6-day power reserve crafted from 277 components. Both the body and the chain of this sizable pocket watch, available in a limited 50-piece edition, are made from the highly in-vogue material of ceramic. Thanks to the sapphire crystal back you can feast your eyes on its openworked movement from all sides. WWW.AZRA-CZ.COM; WWW.CAROLLINUM.CZ

ALCATRAZ – GIGA TOURBILLON Following last year’s triumphant Giga Tourbillon, FRANCK MULLER has pursued the experimental path with its daring Alcatraz edition, boasting a mechanical movement with a nine-day power reserve and a design inspired by the notorious prison island. For the FM 2100TS calibre being placed behind bars and cased in rose-gold is scarcely a punishment, finding itself in the distinguished company of a rose-gold bezel beset with 797 diamonds (8.49 ct) and a skeleton dial paved with another 182 (1.26 ct) stones. For those who consider this rather “too much” there is always the “simple” non-skeletonised version.
GRAND COMPLICATION The traditional German watchmaker A. LANGE & SÖHNE of Glashütte has produced a rare gem for its devotees: the Grande Complication, a phenomenal rose-gold timepiece with scores of complications, limited to only six pieces. Hidden inside the 50-mm case resides a mechanical L1902 calibre, which matches acoustic complications with a chronograph, perpetual calendar and a moon phase display. The white enamel dial with Arab numerals consists of five independent parts. Underscoring the aesthetic perfection of this model is the redbrown alligator strap with gold buckle. WWW.CAROLLINUM.CZ

ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE GRANDE COMPLICATION AUDEMARS PIGUET again proved exceptionally “complicated” at the Geneva SIHH watch fair. The highlight of this year’s models is the limited Grande Complication edition from the iconic Royal Oak Offshore line, first introduced in 1993. Surpassing its predecessors in terms of functions this novelty nevertheless remains faithful to the spirit of the collection whose 20th anniversary it celebrates. It features a perpetual calendar, chronograph and also a minute-repeater. The skeleton movement can be observed through sapphire crystals on either side of the 44mm case. The mechanical calibre, assembled from 648 separate parts, is a tribute to the watchmaker’s art. The release of two distinct versions of this unique timepiece complicates life for collectors. Which to purchase? Titanium or rose gold edition, black or white rubber strap? In either case, there are only three specimens available. So time, or perhaps speed, is of the essence... MASTER GRANDE TRADITION GYROTOURBILLON 3 To mark its 180th anniversary Swiss manufacture JAEGER-LECOULTRE has treated itself to this magnificent gift, a watch featuring a new-generation flying spherical tourbillion, a new calibre design and novel chronograph and moon-phase concepts. The movement is crafted from 576 components while the flying tourbillon forms an ensemble of 112 additional micro parts. Housed in the “ultra white” 43.5-mm platinum case are three separate dials – an hours and minutes clock face, an instant display chronograph with minute digit counter and a day/night indicator disc. This watch is also a genuine rarity with only 75 pieces made. If you like it, you should contact a boutique capable of securing one. WWW.AZRA-CZ.COM; WWW.DUSAK.CZ

EXCALIBUR QUATUOR ROGER DUBUIS, that impossible-toignore manufacture, was again regally represented at SIHH Geneva this year. A stand decked out in the spirit of the King Arthur legend, displaying historic swords and even a live golden eagle, entertainingly drew attention to the launch of the brand’s Excalibur collection. The most commanding of the new timepieces is the utterly distinctive Quatuor, cased in silicon – half as heavy but four times as strong as titanium – limited to three pieces and defying gravity using four interconnected yet independent escapements, one in each quadrant of the watch, each mounted at 45 degrees. Once again IWC refused to be outshone at the Geneva fair. After last year’s soaring success with its Top Gun collection, inspired by life in the skies and the exacting requirements of aviation, IWC has hit the tarmac in no uncertain terms with its Ingenieur 2013 collection. A recent cooperation with the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 racing team has produced a collection inspired by the worlds of motorsport and Formula One. The rounded shapes, emulating wheels and dashboard dials, and the use of carbon and ceramic materials along with rubber straps convey a sleek, sporty look. This model, featuring a tourbillon at nine o'clock and a striking moon phase display, accommodates a handwound movement with a 96-hour power reserve in its 46-mm platinum and ceramic case. The power reserve display at four and five o’clock is a useful new feature.

LUXURY GUIDE
ounded in 1846 by Swiss watchmaker Ulysse Nardin, this historic manufacturer was initially renowned in seafaring circles for its superb marine chronometers. Its global reputation as a watchmaker, however, was established more recently. In 1983 Swiss businessman Rolf W. Schnyder joined the firm – which until then had traded on its name rather than exalted profit margins – and subsequently forged an alliance with illustrious watchmaker and product developer Ludwig Oechslin. This unconventional cooperation proved a recipe for success, resulting in a portfolio of highly complex mechanical timepieces featuring the most intricate complications – perpetual calendars, minute repeaters and tourbillons. Among the company’s most fascinating and alluring models are the Freak Diamond Heart, Royal Blue Tourbillon, Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great limited editions, all bearing the traditional anchor symbol. Two words epitomise this brand: innovation and independence. Ulysse Nardin is one of perhaps five distinguished manufactures that have managed to preserve their authenticity and independence outside of large corporations – something company director Patrick P. Hoffmann is keen to underline. This almost compels the brand to be innovative and grants it freedom for extraordinary creativity. It also enables the firm’s management to react swiftly to market trends and the changing tastes of customers. Innovation has played a conspicuous part in the brand’s recent history. New materials have been readily adopted such as DIAMonSIL which weds the properties of synthetic diamond and silicon. From its inception the firm has garnered over 4,300 watchmaking awards including 18 medals for innovation, technology and design.

CONQUERING KARLOVY VARY To set sail and conquer KARLOVY VARY – ULYSSE NARDIN has done just that. Welcome aboard the Swiss manufacturer’s monobrand boutique, recently opened by the AZRA COMPANY in the famous spa town. Text by KATEŘINA DAŇKOVÁ
The notion of Swiss uniformity holds little sway where Ulysse Nardin is concerned. The brand’s creativity is evident in the unorthodox Freak model that keeps track of time using a sophisticated rotating mechanism. The lower hand covering the spring shows the hours while the upper hand travels around the dial once every hour, an innovative way of indicating minutes. With a classic tourbillon the cage of the balance wheel turns around its axis once every minute, the Freak’s tourbillon carousel however makes one rotation around the centre every 60 minutes. The seconds are indicated by a small arrow on a flying tourbillon on the lower part of the bridge. This peerless timepiece can be wound by turning the lower bezel. The brand’s portfolio not only features luxury watches with fascinating complications and mesmerising looks, it also includes the Chairman handheld phone with an inbuilt rotor – akin to the rotor used in a self-wound mechanical watch but here the kinetic energy is transformed into electricity. It is thus possible to recharge the phone merely with your movements. This 2.8-inch touchscreen smartphone is fitted with a personalised fingerprint identification lock and also features a traditional alpha-numerical keypad and a 5-megapixel camera. It is available in a range of colours or, more accurately, in various steel and gold finishes. Earlier this year Klenotnictví Dušák, Ulysse Nardin’s accredited agent in Prague, organised a unique exhibition of limited editions from the manufacturer’s range which are only rarely made available to the market. Now, in cooperation with the accredited dealer Azra, Ulysse Nardin has opened a monobrand boutique – one of the largest in the world – on the prestigious Stará Louka esplanade in Karlovy Vary, offering an astonishing selection of timepieces and Chairman phones.

PATRIK P. HOFFMANN BEGAN HIS LONG ASSOCIATION WITH ULYSSE NARDIN IN MALAYSIA DURING THE 1990S, IN 1999 HE RELOCATED TO THE US WHERE HE LATER ATTAINED THE POSITION OF VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND MARKETING WORLDWIDE. IN APRIL 2011 HE BECAME THE FIRM’S CEO.
We met Ulysse Nardin’s CEO Patrick P. Hoffmann at the opening of the Ulysse Nardin boutique in Karlovy Vary in November last year. It was snowing heavily and the spa town had an almost alpine atmosphere. We asked Hoffman how people in the Czech Republic regard the Swiss brand. — The imposing new Ulysse Nardin boutique in Karlovy Vary is clearly of international stature. How many of your monobrand outlets exist worldwide? There are several reasons why this, our 16th independent boutique in the world, is situated in Karlovy Vary. One – and I would say the most compelling reason - is that we’re always looking to open shops in places where we are truly in demand. And because our long-term cooperation with Azra has been fruitful and customers in Karlovy Vary have shown such interest in the Ulysse Nardin brand, it became almost a foregone conclusion to open here. Azra has spent many years building the reputation of the brand and the results are plain to see. Mr Osmanovič, Azra’s owner, introduced the idea of an independent boutique and it was clear that with this partner the concept would come to fruition and that’s why we agreed to it. — When did you decide on this cooperation? Was setting up the new shop a protracted affair? About eighteen months ago we met in Basel and discussed a business plan for opening an independent shop in the Czech Republic. I instantly warmed to the idea and one thing led to another. As regards Mr Osmanovič, it was obvious he had a vision. He had the spaces, knew what he wanted to do and he had the right instincts...that was enough for us.
PHOTO: ARCHIVE
— Apparently the Karlovy Vary boutique is the largest in the world. Is that the case? Not quite. The truth is that it’s one of our biggest. Strange as it may seem our biggest monobrand shop – only slightly larger than this one – is in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. What’s so fantastic about the boutique we’re standing in right now is its layout. It’s very open space. The customer gets a positive impression on entering. Everything is conveniently arranged with plenty of room for all our watch and mobile phone ranges but, most importantly, for the customers themselves. What makes it exceptional is that it’s the first boutique of its kind in Central Europe. — There’s much talk that the international luxury business is now dominated by eastern markets and, specifically, the Chinese market. Does this apply to your brand? No, our pivotal market has for some time been a rather different world power – the United States, closely followed by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine where we also have strong customer bases. So the main interest [for our products] lies somewhere outside the Chinese market and I don’t regard this as an issue. It’s not only China where demand
032-033_Ullyse Nardin_AJ.indd 33
for luxury brands is rising – it’s also visible in Europe, traditionally in Milan and also here in the Czech Republic. — How many timepieces does the Ulysse Nardin manufacturer produce annually? We produce around 26,000 pieces, mostly in limited editions. I am especially proud of that. If you produce only 26,000 timepieces a year – all handcrafted – that’s a very limited number indeed, personifying each and every customer. We are simply not able to produce more pieces and our clients are well aware of their exceptionality. — Which collections are bestsellers, having sold well over a sustained period? I don’t like the term bestseller, it’s misleading. I’d rather say most popular. And that’s what our iconic Marine Chronometer collection, produced since 1996 with little change to its basic shape or features, has been for some time now. This collection also appears in limited editions but without radical alterations. In the ladies sector it’s definitely Lady Diver, strictly in terms of numbers sold. But if it’s genuine hits you’re after, then our perpetual calendars or the Freak model have met with unparalleled success since their introduction. — The Freak is indeed unconventional and has little in common with classic timepieces but why that name? It took us some time to choose a name for this model – now into its 12th year on the market since 2001 – it was quite a dilemma. But ultimately we decided on Freak. Questions were raised about its suitability for a traditional brand. But our answer was clear: There simply is no better name! It was the best way to introduce a watch that was so radically different from the rest of our portfolio. New materials were used in the movement and the watch itself stands out – it is quite unmistakable. — Which are your favourite models? Which are dearest to you personally? Which one are you wearing today for example? I have several favourite models but I’m unable to decide on a champion. The Freak is certainly the most unique for me personally and it’s also very important for Ulysse Nardin, representing a significant step in its history. Today I opted for the Sonata model but I change watches regularly and I must say that I also greatly enjoy wearing the Freak.

DIAMOND HEADBANDS, tiaras and diadems underscore a return to the art deco style; to noblesse and a classical look. IRRESISTIBLE TREASURES... Text by KATEŘINA DAŇKOVÁ

A
diamond headband serves to enhance the perfection of your evening look. Indeed, tiaras and diadems are no longer the preserve of princesses at glamorous coronations. The 21st century is witnessing a carefree return to femininity and art deco designs. Such inspirations can be seen in the Blue Book Tiffany (01) headband. At high society dinners, red carpet events and prestigious balls, the Piaget (02) headband cuts a fine figure, decorated by delicate diamond leaves. The Cartier (03, 04) tiara represents a model of sophistication, presented at this year’s SIHH watch and jewellery fair in Geneva. It forms part of the Les Heures Fabuleuses de Cartier collection and combines several jewels in one. Its dominant part can be worn as a broach, and also contains a delicate headband and a secret watch, which forms part of a bracelet belonging to this captivating set. The pear-shaped polished diamonds that decorate this unique piece will enhance both your hairstyle and your ceremonial outfit. Tiaras form a key component of another renowned jeweller, Chaumet (05). From this French realm of luxury emerge some of the most beautiful pieces: decorated centred diamonds of various sizes and colours that are sure to bedazzle. Though most orders stem from the east – Russia and the Middle East – the Old Continent is also home to many a tiara, as snaps from film festivals and award ceremonies attest. Chopard (07) has a particularly close association with Cannes. Even Caroline Scheufele, the company’s creative director and vice-president, has designed a delightful tiara with a heart-shaped central diamond. And let us not forget Roberto Coin (06); the Italian jeweller creates tiaras to order for customers across the globe.

T
he IWC Race Night was the event in question along with the awe-inspiring IWC stand. The gala evening was unquestionably the “jewel in the crown” for the host of journalists who had converged on Geneva to cover one of the most prestigious exhibitions of the year, the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH). The evening was a heady mixture of fast wheels, motorsports, beautiful ladies and internationally acclaimed actors and actresses, consummated by a sumptuous gala dinner and musical wizardry from the band Jamiroquai. Above all, however, it was a powerful showcase for the recent activities of IWC. At around eight in the evening people began to fill up the two red carpets rolled out for celebrities and friends of the brand, among them the method actors Ewan McGregor and Jean Reno and football legend Zinédine Zidane. It was Tuesday, the exhibition’s second day, and the sense of anticipation was palpable. Most observers already had their own ideas about what surprises IWC, the manufacturer from Schaffhausen, might have in store. Information regarding an alliance between IWC and the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One racing team had surfaced some time before. For those who earlier that day had inspected the
036-038_IWC party_AJ.indd 36
IWC stand with its unique displays of Mercedes cars – and witnessed the large number of celebrities dropping by – it was obvious that something extravagant was underway. Moreover, no-one had yet had the opportunity to view the brand’s Ingenieur 2013 timepieces. So everything pointed towards the new collection and IWC’s new relationship with Formula One racing being the centrepieces of the party (a party that was to leave an indelible impression on my recollections of this year’s “Salon”). Once the stars had finished posing for the cameras they entered the foyer where champagne and canapés were being served. The interior was a veritable homage to motor sports: with tyre tables, Formula One racing cars with driving simulators, a huge mock-up of a race circuit and – being served out of car mechanics’ toolboxes – not Stillson wrenches and crowbars but delectable parcels featuring goat cheese, wasabi or foie gras. Before I could even get my bearings friends of mine were asking: “Have you seen Georges?” showing me pictures on their iPhones of a man fast asleep on a plane during a holiday trip. Then the gates to the world of motor racing opened up and the IWC Race Night began. About 800 guests were ensconced at more than 100 tables when Georges Kern appeared on the scene – the same Georges who for the past 13 years has in various senior capacities worked for Richemont, the group which owns IWC (and whom I had just seen

asleep on a plane a few moments before). Already considered an old hand in the industry the Richemont CEO is universally revered. After welcoming the assembled guests Georges invited Oscar laureate Kevin Spacey to the stage! Spacey arrived there in some style, turning up in a Mercedes SLS AMG for his role as event host, entertainer and impersonator. He now swapped his car for a kick scooter, joking that he had been chosen to host the gala evening simply because he was so much cheaper than his Hollywood contemporaries. His turn also included some perfectly judged impersonations of former president Bill Clinton and fellow actors Morgan Freeman and Al Pacino.
036-038_IWC party_AJ.indd 37
It soon became clear to everyone present that as far as this evening was concerned money was no object. On the largest screen ever assembled in Europe an incredible spectacle was unfolding. It relayed footage from an adjoining hall where a Formula One racing car was being driven with its engine at full throttle. The wall of sound was almost deafening. For guests concerned about their powers of hearing earplugs lay at the ready. These proved necessary for some, as only seconds later the car, with German racing driver Nico Rosberg at the wheel, sped into the room, passing directly in front of the first row of tables. We all instinctively rose, shocked, deafened but applauding so vehemently that our hands hurt. A truly stunning entry! Nico disembarked and with a jaunty James Bond-inspired stride almost danced towards the podium. Awaiting him there was Czech supermodel Karolína Kurková who is even taller than we imagine! Other friends of the IWC brand were also invited centre stage for an unconventional contest to see who would be quickest to change the tyres on the vehicle that had still not had a chance to cool down. At the helms of the opposing teams – composed of celebrities including Evan McGregor, Jean Reno, Zinédine Zidane, Ross Brawn and Luís Figo – were Eric Dane, one of the main characters of the Grey’s Anatomy TVseries, and Matthew Fox, known for his regular part in Lost. The friendly encounter was eventually decided in favour of Eric Dane’s team.

Then a man sporting a hat and purple moccasins hit the stage. Singer Jay Kay of British band Jamiroquai swept almost everyone onto the dance floor with a mesmerising one-hour performance featuring all his hits – the highlight of a memorable evening. Afterwards, those not ready to retire headed back to the foyer where a dance party was just getting underway. For many guests the IWC Race Night was destined to be a long one, as few were in any hurry to leave. The next day the IWC stand was again full to bursting. However, the opportunity to view the new collection up close certainly made the wait worthwhile. The Ingenieur collection elaborates on a succession of historic models, the first of which was launched in 1955. The 1970s saw the Ingenieur SL model with its appealing modern appearance based on blueprints by watch designer Gérald Genta. In the 1980s IWC offered its customers a thinner model (the case was 10 mm thick) as well as a titanium version, followed in 1989 by the self-wound Ingenieur

Automatic. The three succeeding models were presented in 2005 and two years later the Big Ingenieur was born. Now 2013 heralds a new era for the model range as the new generation of “engineers” is crafted from fashionable contemporary materials including carbon, titanium and ceramics. The new generation also displays a sporty or even modest streak. Assuming pole position in this collection is the Ingenieur Constant-Force Tourbillon, a platinum and ceramic model dominated by a tourbillon at nine o’clock and a double moon phase display. The Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month has along with a perpetual calendar and large numeric date and month display a strong emphasis on motorsport in its design details. The Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance also has a distinctly sporty demeanour. Admirers of this exclusive all-carbon limited edition can choose between two 100-piece limited editions with either red or yellow details. From the remaining 7 models the Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil deserves mention. It breathes new life into the 1930s car legend, the Mercedes Benz W25 Silver Arrow, on which it is themed. It has a brown dial and a rubber strap of matching colour. A 1955 version of a Mercedes Silver Arrow was featured among the displays at the IWC stand of the Geneva exhibition. The brand presented itself there as a truly powerful player leading the horologic field with a strong hand. However, the game is only just beginning.

LUXURY GUIDE
Pierce Enjoying a glass of Martini – shaken not stirred – and a breathtaking view of Venice, famous Irish actor and former JAMES BOND, PIERCE BROSNAN, opens up about his family, career and latest film. The bittersweet Danish comedy Love is All You Need strangely mirrors his own life. Text by JOSIP JURČIĆ
I
n “Love Is All You Need” you play grieving widower Philip who finds new love. As you also lost your first wife Cassandra Harris, what did you bring from your own experience of loss to the movie? Everything. Who I am, what I have done. You live life and experience life. And when someone like director Susanne Bier comes along with a lovely gift that reflects something of your own life, you go for it and use what you’ve got. Sit back and say the lines and try to keep it as simple as possible.
BROSNAN
— How do you keep love alive in your marriage after almost 20 years? Every day I tell my wife I love her. In the morning, in the evening… That she is beautiful and that I couldn’t have done this without her. Keely is the backbone to our family and to my life. We married at a time when I was adrift, just like the character in this movie. I had lost a wife and was almost three years a widower. But then she came into my life and I tried to resist and resist, but then you let go. — Can you recall the moment when you let go? It was a slow dawning that this woman meant a lot to me. I was blessed with the mystery, the beauty and the kindness of her. And then I just realised that I was happy. I was really happy. — James Bond turned 50 last year. How do you see yourself in this tradition? I don’t know. When I arrived in England from Ireland, as a boy of 11 years of age, “Goldfinger” with Sean Connery was the first film that I saw. It was like “Oh, I want to be that.” I wanted to be Oddjob, I wanted to have a bowler hat. It was the magic of movies, the intoxication of cinema. That is why I always have the greatest joy and gratitude for the role of James Bond.
— Is it painful to play in a story that resembles your own experience? No, it’s quite cathartic. It’s useful. In the specific scene, the day was so gorgeous. And I had to remember it was not my life, it was his life, Philip’s life. The sting and juice of the pain that was yours is something else. You just play the part..
— Do you regret not getting the role earlier in your career, as producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli also approached you in the 80s? My late wife was in a Bond film, she was in “For Your Eyes Only”, and that was when I met Cubby. And he did offer me the role, it just wasn’t perfect timing. But the seed was sown somewhere and now I’m satisfied with the way things turned out.
— As a practicing Catholic, do you believe in life after death? (laughs). Oh, I don’t know. As a Catholic, as an Irish Catholic, being steeped in all of that, the romanticism of it is there. However, you wonder, you wonder. You hope that when the end comes, you have the courage and grace to go out.
— You seem hardly changed physically from the Bond days. What do you do for fitness? I take that as a compliment. My secrets are good Irish genes and moderation. I just try to keep up, I try to do a bit of Yoga, a good diet and a bit of exercise.
— Do you believe that “love is all you need” in life? Yes. Love and only love. It’s essential. Now more than ever, especially in the agitation and confusion that is created by electronics and media. In this time it’s so easy to lose contact and touch within families.
— Are your Irish roots still important for you? Yes, it is where it all began. And when you look at it, all that matters goes back to that point in time. That boy, that life, that history, that culture…

STILLS FROM BROSNAN’S LATEST FILM LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED
— Did you feel gratified by all the recognition you received, coming from an Irish working class background? Yes. It’s all about hard work, more hard work and then luck. Getting the right break, having a certain gift, a little bit of talent that you can polish.
— Do you see a lot of yourself in your sons? Do you recognise certain traits? Yeah. The boldness of the boys. The devil-may-care of them. — Does that bother you as a father? It terrifies me. They don’t do anything untoward. But you see the reflection of yourself. Your own gaze and your shadow moves. You hear the heartbeat of who they are. — What advice do you give them about girls? (laughs) We are getting to that point now. I don’t know if my advice is going to be good advice or not, so I just say be careful, be kind, be a gentleman. Thank God for the mother. — Could you envisage being a businessman like the character in this movie? No. I don’t have the head for all of that. I don’t have the brain, and business doesn’t interest me. I like the romance of life. I was blessed to find acting. I left school at 15 with nothing but a cardboard folder full of paintings and drawings. I got a job as an artist. And that cardboard thing took me into acting.
040-042_Pierce Brosnan_AJ.indd 42
— How do you see yourself when you watch “Mamma Mia”? Oh God. I watched the premieres and that was it. — Was it hard to convince you to do that part? No. My agent called me up one night. It was at the time when my father was dying. And what is interesting is that my father’s name was Carmichael and the character’s name was Carmichael. So my agent called me and said: “I’ve got a job.” – “Great, how much?” – He said: “Meryl Streep.” And I was like: “Cool, Meryl Streep. They’re really taking me seriously now.” He said: “Mamma Mia.” And I said: “You’ve got to be joking.” – He said: “No. But can you stay in London tomorrow night?” – Actually by then my father had died, and we were having the funeral, and I said: “Okay”. So I went to the theatre and I sat there with my mom and my boys and I watched this play, and I thought: “Oh my God. What have I said yes to?!” I kept thinking: “No, Meryl Streep, she is doing it. Meryl Streep, Meryl Streep. If she agreed, I’m okay.” And later my daughter Charlotte asked me: “Daddy, who are you playing?” I said: “I don’t know. I forgot to ask. I’m one of the dads.” — Do you miss doing action films? No, not really. However, I have one that I want to do, that is in the spy genre. And hopefully we are going to produce it. — What is your biggest regret with regards to your life and career? I have none. I have no regrets. I have had good luck, good fortune. — What gives you satisfaction? My family, to be a father. To have a career like this. To still be at the table, to be still doing it, to have a passion, a joy and a want. That’s it.
PHOTO: ARCHIVE, AEROFILMS, IAN GAVAN/GETTY IMAGES
— What is your attitude towards work these days? Do you need to work a lot, or are you happy taking a break? I like to work. It becomes an agitation, if I don’t. The agitation is not a neurosis, it is just a desire to work. Nothing comes from nothing. I built a home in Malibu, I have a place in Hawaii. So, I’d like to think if the shit hits the fan, I’d say: We cut this and cut this and we start again. You have to be nimble on your feet. My wife and I have a good relationship, a joy for life, and as the boys are getting older, they are now 11 and 15, we are thinking about the time when they will go off to college. I still want to make movies as an older man and she’ll come with me. We can share life.

hether you arrive in summer or in winter, in the morning or at night, before you start shopping for original designs or embark on your tour of the city’s music clubs, your first port of call should be the Vietnamese restaurant Monsieur Vuong (Alte Schönhauser Straße 46) (11). This acclaimed venue’s delicious fruit milkshakes, Vietnamese coffee and authentic Pho soup are little short of obligatory. Another modish restaurant is Schneeweiss in the vibrant Friedrichshain district (Simplonstraße 16) (02), serving alpine specialities and a superb Wiener Schnitzel. The wintry decor accords with the restaurant’s name, which translates as Snow White. Linger over a cup of coffee at Café Godot on the corner of Kastanienallee in Prenzlauer Berg, reputed to offer the city’s best espresso, then explore this fashionable quarter by bicycle – a Berliner’s most cherished means of transport. A similarly exuberant atmosphere awaits you in the adjacent district of Kreuzberg, famed for its nightlife. The house and techno club Watergate (Falckensteinstraße 49) and the Club der Visionaere (Am Flutgraben 1) are both hugely popular but Berghain with its Panorama Bar located in an old railway station (Am Wriezener Bahnhof) is more atmospheric. On entry you are inspected by a shaman who will only let you pass if he deems you have positive energy. This perhaps explains the club’s nightly once-in-a-lifetime atmosphere. After partying you can recuperate in the Asian-inspired Yi-spa (Monbijouplatz 3a), a World Luxury Hotel 2011 Award winner in the best spa category. The massages here have been elevated to an art form, in keeping with the minimalist decor and subdued oriental atmosphere. Shopping expeditions should begin at the Baerck concept store (Mulackstraße 12) (03) where you will be astonished by the sheer array of fashion and interior design brands. Art installations are interspersed among the latest products from influential German and Scandinavian designers. The nearby Super Store’s assortment is presented in a similar vein

but also includes skin care products and luxury cosmetics. If you want to be first to discover future fashion legends then Konzept86 (Skalitzerstraße 86) offers a sales outlet for new and distinctive designers. An already famous name beyond the German fashion scene is Esther Perbandt, whose elegant androgynous creations can be obtained in the Esther Perbandt Studio (01, 05, 06) on the Almstadtstraße – an address she shares with another highly desirable Berlin-based label, Tiedeken. For impeccably-cut suits, both classic and flamboyant, head to the Herr von Eden boutique on the Alte Schönhauserstraße (08, 09, 10). Annette Görtz, whose boutiques can be found all over the world (in Berlin on Markgrafenstraße 42), is perhaps the city’s most celebrated designer. Her compelling layered garments favour leather cuts and an ascetic look. Berlin is also the ideal place to shop for eyeglasses or shades. Local opticians offer truly eclectic selections catering to the most extravagant and idiosyncratic tastes. Berlin-based retailer Mykita (Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 6) (13), which cooperates with designer Alexandre Herchcovitch and the exclusive Moncler sportswear brand, merits particular attention. The Lunettes Kollektion boutique (Torstraße 172), applies a distinctly retro finish to contemporary urban frames. Want a stylish full stop? Try the Berlin Summer fragrance produced by the exceptional Frau Tonis perfume workshop (Zimmerstraße 13) (04, 07).

JOHN
RICHMOND The man who gave style to rock ’n’ roll
DESTROY, DISORIENTATE, DISORDER is his slogan, rock music is his anthem and he wants to get us all into black leather. The clothes of fashion rebel John Richmond have finally become available in Prague. Text by VERONIKA ŠTEFANOVÁ
BLACK
Although leather and the colour of the night sky form the essentials of John Richmond’s collections he invariably manages to introduce them in novel and surprising ways. Leather motorcycle jackets and leather trousers are worn with gossamer chiffon tops – evoking more than a suggestion of glam-rock... “For me leather is a clear rock ‘n’ roll statement, while black expresses the non-compromising attitude of those living their lives to the full,” Richmond said. Nor does the designer shy away from whites – this spring’s women’s collection includes magnificent dresses, blouses and jackets in hues as bright as a fresh blanket of snow. But the other colours the designer is willing to consider are far and few between. His is a radical world – black-andwhite – espousing, like rock music, both innocence and sin. A master of provocatively sexy designs, he also loves to borrow fichues, sequins and tattoo-like motifs from the music scene.
BRITAIN
Richmond’s British origins clearly show up in his work. Since the birth of punk the UK has been a land of fashion rebels under the reign of a queen called Vivienne Westwood. “Our rebellious streak – something you aren’t necessarily aware of growing up there – perhaps comes from being an island cut off from the rest of Europe or perhaps it’s just our crazy weather. However, the way people around you dress, what music they listen to, how they dance at concerts, that all obviously has an impact,” says the 53 year-old designer who studied at Kingston University in London and later established his own fashion label which almost overnight set him among the trailblazers of the British fashion scene. In 1995 he entered into a close cooperation with Italian businessman Saverio Moschillo who helped to launch the brand internationally. Although the brand’s headquarters subsequently moved to Milan, the influence of Italian fashion on Richmond’s work has remained slight: “Certainly not from an aesthetic perspective – punk will always remain closest to my heart – but in Italy I certainly started to focus more on the quality and workmanship of materials, areas where the Italians have strong traditions,” Richmond noted.
EMPIRE
The British designer’s fashion empire is an expanding one, comprising the John Richmond couture brand and the Richmond Denim and Richmond X lines where rock glamour blends with elements of streetwear – now available in the Richmond boutique on Široká Street. Clothing aside, you will also find shoes, bags, swimwear, glasses, lingerie, the Junior children’s collection and the unisex Viva Rock fragrance (for the rebellious at heart) in the brand’s portfolio. Richmond’s rock ‘n’ roll planet is headquartered in Milan and has boutiques in significant cities around the world. ROCK
During John Richmond’s teenage years in 1970s Manchester artists such as David Bowie, Roxy Music and the Sex Pistols not only informed his musical tastes but also his aesthetic sense, instilling an emulative urge to fight social conformity through artistic expression, appearance and personal disposition. “The first album I ever bought was David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. Since childhood I’ve always been inspired by music and rock music in particular had a profound influence on my range of expression within fashion. I can honestly say that music is behind my love for fashion,” the designer revealed in an exclusive interview with Luxury Guide. It is perhaps not surprising therefore that Richmond’s creations have found particular favour among rock stars, with Mick Jagger, Annie Lennox, Bryan Adams and others adopting the brand.

ou know the story all too well! The approaching spring sees jackets gradually tossed aside and a yearning for fresh designs and the latest trends. At the same time, you seek a top that genuinely fulfils your practical clothing requirements. This summer, you might put the jumper on hold and instead begin a love affair with the jacket. “This season, designers have focused on assorted patterns, textures and colours for jackets,” says Preetma Singh, fashion assistant at Vogue, “These are elements that help an ordinary piece rise to a new fashion trend. In the past, the jacket primarily fulfilled a formal function. Today, thanks to new cuts and colours, they have become a fashion statement.” When did the jacket first find its way into women’s wardrobes? Naturally, Coco Chanel played a role in the controversial shifting of the corseted female silhouette into a more masculine form of dress. During the 1920s, Chanel popularised the jacket as a key component of a woman’s outfit. But a consolidation of this position
050-051_Fenomen sako.indd 50
came only in the 1970s, when Yves Saint Laurent began to play with the cuts of a woman’s smoking jacket featuring a combination of perfectly attuned masculine and feminine elements. The use of the jacket was deliberately risqué, worn only over a bra. At the same time, the Ralph Lauren fashion house began to produce stacks of jackets based on the classic British outdoors look. And it was this design that was made famous by actress Diane Keaton in the 1977 movie Annie Hall. Arriving in the 1980s, we find the jacket becoming a key component of every woman’s work dress. Worn in various colours, most often adorned with gold buttons and featuring large shoulder pads. The 1990s put an end to shoulder pads, with looser cuts receding in favour of shorter and tighter-fitting outfits. Today, examining the varied world of women’s jackets is a truly rewarding experience. Shops proudly display neon and ice cream colours; jacketed mannequins lure us in with tropical patterns or black and white geometric forms. We stroke cashmere, wool and satin with our hands and our eyes also detect velvet, corduroy and tweed. As far as cuts are concerned, the jackets can be split into three basic categories – personal tastes will determine the final style that VARIOUS TAKES ON THE FAMOUS “LITTLE BLACK choosing one of these will create. THE SPECTRUM OF CHOICE FOR THE CORRECT JACKET IS LARGER THIS YEAR THAN EVER BEFORE. A JACKET ADDS IMMEDIATE GLAMOUR TO ANY OUTFIT. the tight-fitting short cut jacket. It clings to the body and its length matches that of a shirt or jumper. It can easily be combined with both light summer clothing and also trousers of various designs. When buying, it is important to make sure your jacket truly fits. When it sits well, you can turn towards various stylistic flourishes such as a casual rolled up sleeve look, or a different coloured belt for that modern touch. The second variety is the boyfriend jacket or blazer. Comprising a gamut of oversized pieces, they are designed to look like they were borrowed from your partner’s wardrobe, but are in fact designed for the female figure. Such jackets are complemented by a sheath dress or slim cut trousers. The stylistic key is to balance the masculinity of the jacket with softer more feminine touches. For example, high heels, jewellery or handbags complement the look perfectly. The third, somewhat more formal variety is the tuxedo cut, inspired by the men’s smoking jacket. Long, thin lines and a minimalist androgynous style can help to persuade the world that the wearer has both power and style. Such an item is suitable, for example, at a cocktail party. It is with the tuxedo cut that one can replicate the Katherine Hepburn look. If the buttons of the suit go high enough, a bolder woman may choose to wear nothing underneath at all. Examples of this were visible on the catwalks of the spring/summer Fashion Week 2013. DKNY fashion house and Versace both bet on the refinement and sensuality of models in lace bras or translucent satin tops under open-buttoned jackets. This combination of tailoring craftsmanship in the jacket and the minimalist

nature of the bra may be racy, but has the disadvantage of being unpractical in the real world. The hottest trend evident in 2013 is sleeveless jackets. This season, they were released by numerous fashion houses, including Givenchy, Balenciaga, Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang. These jackets are of a looser, longer cut, and resemble trendy vests. Some may find such a trend to resemble a teapot without a handle, but the resulting “wow” effect is guaranteed. Cheryl Cole, Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker are among the biggest fans of this trend and are urging their fans that sleeves went out with the past season. Various cuts, colours, materials and patterns give each woman considerable choices in finding the right match. Every jacket will immediately lift an outfit into a glamorous form and enrich the wearer with elegance and confidence. During the day, they can be worn during business meetings, and in the evening with friends in a bar or on the DESIGNER ALEXANDER WANG CREATED dance-floor, returA STRONG TREND AT THE LATEST NEW ning home at the YORK FASHION WEEK – THIS AUTUMN, FUR JACKETS WILL BE ALL THE RAGE. crack of dawn. Marilyn MONROE SHE WAS SO INNOCENT AND YET SO COMPLEX. Her status as a modern day icon made many a fellow woman jealous – but inside, MARILYN MONROE never found contentment amidst the stardom. She wanted to have children, but miscarried twice. She was adored by countless fans and loved by dozens of men, but in the end she remained alone. On August 5, 1962, she was found dead in her Brentwood home. She was only thirty six. THE SALVATORE FERRAGAMO MUSEUM in Florence has a new exhibition looking back at her life.

arilyn Monroe was undoubtedly one of the most loyal customers of shoe designer Italian Salvatore Ferragamo. The pair never actually met, but Ferragamo continued to craft shoes for the star throughout her life. She was a size 36 and frequently ordered 12cm high heeled shoes from the Ferragamo boutique on Park Avenue, Manhattan. Her home was filled with hundreds of shoes – of the same type but in a variety of colours. Her specific model of shoe was made to order by Ferragamo; it is said that the ideal height of the heel increased the femininity of the hips as they caused the wearer to walk with a slight sway. The exhibition, held in the Palazzo Spini Feroni, rounds off a series of three retrospectives about famous actresses: Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo and Marilyn Monroe. On display were exclusive photographs, letters and clothing worn in some of the most memorable performances. The eternal blonde bombshell even managed to inspire a “reconstruction” of her place of death. The exhibit thus served to reignite debate over the mysterious circumstances surrounding Monroe’s death, which has never been conclusively explained. Theories of murder, perhaps arranged by the Kennedy brothers, were never proven, while both suicide and an accidental overdose also raise many questions. A true beauty left this world, but her iconic and inspirational style has bestowed upon Marilyn Monroe true immortality. WWW.FERRAGAMO.COM

B&O Sennheiser The world’s most expensive headphones! At January’s CES fair in Las Vegas, the traditional headphone maker Sennheiser unveiled a true rarity: Orpheus, the most expensive headphones in the world. Interestingly, the model was actually created in 1991, limited to 300 pieces. Back then, the price tag was $12,900; today, should you manage to track down a pair, it will cost you three times more – around CZK 750,000. The collector’s item, designed for true audiophiles, has a unique open construction and relies on a special electronic amplifier. WWW.SENNHEISER.COM
Bang & Olufsen equals compact design! Its new integrated sound system looks as stylish as it sounds. Designed for the company by Anders Hermansen, its BeoLab 15 speakers are designed to be mounted on your wall or even ceiling. They are available in a matt aluminium finish, with white or black fabric covers. The BeoLab 16 subwoofer and Amplifier 1 also form part of this system. The speakers offer an adjustable reclining assembly enabling high or mid tones to be specifically directed. Simply turn on the unit and your speakers will adjust to the position and angle set by you. A place for all your music! Unique headphones also require a top-notch music player. For those enamoured by high-level digital sound quality (for example the 192 kHz / 24bit format), the German manufacturer Burmester offers a solution. Its top of the line server will accommodate all of your music, with controls either through a voluminous touchscreen display or even via an iPad app. The unit’s distinct design will certainly become a key feature of any room. Additionally, the server contains a built-in power supply, ensuring protection against power spikes and outages. The asking price is around one million crowns. WWW.BURMESTER.DE

Animal MAGNETISM LAMBORGHINI VENENO Without hesitation, the year 2013 can be called THE YEAR OF ANIMALS. Diehard protectors of animals should think about this and perhaps intervene. The animals: the bull, the horse, and the jaguar are, in fact, endangered species. Their owners will love their outsized pets, but they won’t show them any mercy...
More conservative visitors to the Geneva car showroom could have been forgiven for thinking someone had spiked their drink with a hallucinogenic substance. The designers who arrived at Sant’Agata, the site of the popular Piccolo, may have felt the same way. The result is an amazing sports car celebrating the 50th anniversary of Lamborghini. Creativity knows no bounds, and although one is present at the birth of a new model, there is nothing to do but applaud, offer birthday congratulations, and wish for more rampaging bulls like the Veneno. BENTLEY, LAS VEGAS
THE BENTLEY GT SPEED CONVERTIBLE: A luxurious car with a sporty spirit. We took part in this aristocratic cabriolet’s first test drive. Fifteen men and one woman gave the new car an airing along the highways of Arizona and Nevada. Text by KATEŘINA DAŇKOVÁ
T
hat woman was me. After accepting Bentley’s invitation to the United States to test drive one of the brand’s latest models I naturally wondered which of my media colleagues would be joining me. “From the Czech Republic it’s just you. Your luxury lifestyle publication for men and women was our first choice,” said Irena Bandová, PR manager of Porsche in Prague which represents Bentley in the Czech Republic. The experience turned out to be quite exceptional. Prior to this adventure I had no idea of what it felt like to drive a 7-million-crown car.
13 FEBRUARY 2013 DAY ONE – FROM PRAGUE TO LAS VEGAS The business class flight from Prague to Las Vegas via London took off in the morning as scheduled. In a lounge on English territory I made a three-hour wait more pleasurable by watching Bentley promotional spots on
072-074_Bentley_AJ.indd 72
YouTube. The excitement began to set in: I’d been offered an opportunity to drive along historic Route 66 in a car launched only a month ago that accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds; a 4-seat 625 hp convertible with a top speed of 325 km/h. Quite a drive! At half past six that evening our plane landed in Las Vegas and an hour later I was unpacking my bags in the Mandarin Oriental, a hotel situated on the “strip” – also known as Las Vegas Boulevard – in between the Aria and the Monte Carlo hotels and a stone’s throw from the monumental New York-New York and MGM hotels. Bentley Motors PR managers Tom Housley and Mike Sayer assembled the invited journalists for drinks. Looking around it soon became clear that I was the only woman and that I’d therefore be sharing a car with one of the other 15 – male – motor enthusiasts. Quite a strange feeling... Who would they pair me off with? Would he be a responsible driver? I knew we’d be taking turns behind the wheel. I certainly didn’t
fancy a long slog with a scenery buff, much less a reckless daredevil intent on showing off. The verdict hung over us until morning.
14 FEBRUARY 2013 DAY TWO – FROM LAS VEGAS TO GRAND CANYON (291 MILES / 468 KM) Immediately after breakfast partners were assigned, resulting in some interesting combinations – a Pole and a Lebanese, an Italian and a Portuguese, a Frenchman and an American, an Australian and a publisher from Dubai who boasted of already having a Bentley in his garage. In total there were eight couples, eight brand new GT Speed Convertibles in eight gorgeous colours from red to lemon yellow. I was allotted Pierre from South Africa and a variegated silver vehicle. The Top Gear editor made a convivial first impression then briskly familiarised himself with the car while I adjusted the leather co-driver’s seat. We were both raring to go. The first leg of our route eastwards from Las Vegas would take slightly over an hour. With an official speed limit on most US highways of

75 mph, in places reduced to only 65 mph (105 km/h), we struggled to stay within the regulations. We frequently overtook vehicles at 95 mph or ticked over at 10 mph above the recommended limit. The merest tickle of the throttle produced palpable acceleration. Pierre however drove very smoothly and our speed hardly made itself felt inside the car, even with the top down. We were the first to arrive at Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner (something that became a habit on the trip – to our eventual loss – as the photographers never managed to take our picture. On the last night I ended up posing like a model in front of the hotel in almost total darkness). American coffee is filtered water dyed brown – it doesn’t crank you up and is completely tasteless. But you don’t expect to come across an Italian espresso out here so I added a decilitre of milk to make it more palatable. As soon as it became clear that we didn’t need to wait for the others, especially the laggards in the red car, we set off. The main purpose of our journey was, after all, the journey! Finally it was my turn behind the wheel. We drove onto the legendary Route 66: boundless, straight

and nowadays hardly used. I toyed with the accelerator, slowing to 45 mph. Dawdling behind a Chevrolet Colorado I regulated my breathing and relaxed… then suddenly I swept effortlessly past him as the speedometer whisked to 100 mph (a whopping 160 km/h). The surge pulled me deep into my seat, a sensational feeling! I then quickly slowed down to deter any chance of pursuit from the blue and white highway patrol cars. Still flushed with exhilaration we arrived at the Roadkill Cafe, an intriguing venue advertising itself with the slogan You kill it, we grill it. We ordered a buffalo meat hamburger with a mountain of fries before continuing on our way, now with the roof up and Pierre at the wheel. We soon discovered what the restaurant’s slogan was all about – on our approach to the Grand Canyon we were compelled to drive increasingly slowly to avoid making unwanted passengers of the local wildlife on the bonnet of our silver beauty. Once again we were first to arrive at the mysterious El Tovar hotel situated in the southerly part of the national park. After the pleasant 20 degrees centigrade experienced at our previous stop we hurried to wrap ourselves up.
It was barely three degrees above freezing even though the sun was still up. During the night the mercury drops as low as minus 25 degrees.
15 FEBRUARY 2013 DAY THREE – FROM GRAND CANYON TO SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA (307 MILES / 494 KM) The final day of our trip was like something out of a road movie. The route out of the canyon took us along hairpin bends punctuated with stunning vistas and viewing stops. An imposing panorama of the legendary red rocks unfurled before us. At the bends Pierre switched to sport mode teasing the automatic by shifting gears with the two peddles beneath the steering wheel. We took the easier turns at 80 mph while cruising at up to 100 mph on the straight stretches in between. The engine’s roar was awe-inspiring. My heart nearly gave out every two minutes and I could feel cold sweats running across my entire body. It was sheer acceleration, dramatic, thrilling! At each bend the stately vehicle stayed smoothly adhered to the road despite our considerable speed. For the first time I un-

derstood what real speed is about and how much adrenaline must course through the body of a racing driver. I also began to understand why car enthusiasts continue to crave for a BMW M3 or M5, or Porsche 911 Carrera well into their old age. Speed is addictive and dangerous but worth every moment. After our second stop in Payson we retracted the roof again. Ahead were Arizona’s sunnier climes and the evergreen Tonto National Forest – pine tree covered hills which shadow the route with almost sinusoidal regularity. Also highly visible are the towering Saguaro cacti common to these parts. It was an enjoyable and relaxing drive and I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. This is the life – I thought – driving or being driven, smiling at the sun with your hair ruffling in the wind. Our final destination was Scottsdale. Summer temperatures here surge to over forty degrees centigrade but now in February it was “merely” 26 degrees. This is a popular migration spot for so-called “snowbirds” – North American citizens in search of winter warmth. As a consequence the city scores highly for both five-star hotels and golf resorts. However, its pleasures are not confined to daylight and the city’s bars, clubs and hangouts are famous for keeping guests entertained into the early hours. For most of our party however all that awaited
was the journey home. Some had flights that evening, others, like me, early the next day. On the plane home I took stock. I had just driven the world’s fastest four-seat convertible; a car whose sporty character and luxurious design will only be enjoyed by a few thousand fortunate owners. A story came to mind that Bentley’s Tom Housley had told us during a rest stop. A Bentley sales representative was once appointed to a distinguished female client in the Middle East. An order was placed and final details regarding accessories and interior colours were being discussed. Finally it came to the desired colour for the car’s body. Bentley offers ten basic colours but you may choose something entirely to your own taste – with a hefty premium, of course. The lady in question produced a bottle of nail varnish to indicate exactly the colour she had in mind. The representative was about to pop it into his briefcase, assuring her it would be no problem. But the woman protested, saying that her nail varnish had to stay where it was, as she simply couldn’t live without it! Thus the sales rep boarded his flight to England with neatly polished nails, taking pains to ensure that the lacquer did not rub off. This tale is perhaps indicative of the extraordinary lengths Bentley is prepared to go to for its clients. This is a brand with a tradition of customer care stretching back over ninety years. No obstacle is too great and the client’s wishes are always paramount. It was extremely rewarding to spend time in the company of such professionals. No car is the same. SPRINGTIME Each year, cosmetics brands lure us in with their spring and summer make-up collections. Playful, colourful combinations and tips both cool and practical can’t help but stir us after the long winter. One such winning product is Teint Visionnaire from Lancôme, which combines both a make-up and corrector. This creates a two-fold advantage: having these beauty products close at hand, and also having them in matching shades. Forget unsightly patches and instead enjoy a flawless complexion. Another novelty not to be missed is the Surrealist Everfresh Mascara from Helena Rubinstein. It increases body, optically lengthens, does not dry out and its natural build won’t weigh down or compact your lashes. The new face powder Les Beiges from Chanel will also perfectly complement your skin. It will slightly brighten your complexion, as after a brisk summer stroll.

Plasma Therapy If you’ve yet to try nature’s latest greatest miracle, then it may be time to take the plunge. The procedure may sound a little vampire-like at first, but the point is that it works. Rejuvenation via blood plasma is becoming an increasingly popular procedure. How does it work? Some blood is taken from your body; with the aid of a gel, the plasma is separated from your red blood cells. As with mesotherapy, this plasma is then injected via a thin needle into the skin. Within three weeks, the results will be noticeable: more elastic skin, fewer visible wrinkles and a regenerated complexion. Plasma therapy also speeds up the body’s healing mechanism and is also used to aid hair growth and joint repair.

n Hollywood, where Eve Lom lived for a short time with her husband, she got to know the renowned skin expert Georgette Klinger. She introduced her to the secrets of cosmetics, aromatherapy, lymphatic drainage, and osteopathy – a manual therapy similar to chiropractic. Eve was fascinated by the possibilities that proper skincare offered, and at the same time she realised that there was a gap in the market for products that would suit her perfectly. She moved to England where, in 1983, she opened her first cosmetics salon. Three years later, she launched a product that became a perennial classic in terms of make-up removal, and which has often been called the best multipurpose make-up remover of all time. The aromatic Cleanser balm, which washes the skin, removes dead cells, and cleanses is now a legendary preparation that has become popular with countless customers in the 25 years of its existence. Its secret lies in its composition: it contains hop extracts, Egyptian oil, eucalyptus, and coconut butter. You warm up a small quantity of Cleanser in your hands, which you then apply to a dry face, massaging the skin with circular movements. You can use it in the area around the eyes and it can handle even the most resistant make-up. After a short massage, you put a special muslin cloth on your face that has been moistened in hot water, thereby steaming the skin. The heat opens up the pores and the essential oils contained in Cleanser clean the skin deeply. Finally, you wipe off the remnants of the cleanser with gentle movements using a tissue, and by rinsing your face in cold water. Immediately after cleansing, you will notice a feeling of purity. The skin is radiant at first glance and is ready for another dose of healthiness. Among the 15 products intended for all types of skin, you will find the award-winning facial Rescue Mask, the TLC Radiance Cream with rose extracts, an under-eye preparation, and two new serums for hydrating and firming. In one of the most popular Eve Lom spas in London, fans of this brand can expect a three-month treatment costing around 8,000 CZK. But don’t let this put you off. Being treated by exclusive Eve Lom cosmetics is worth waiting for.

B Kilian
oth Rihanna and Britney Spears took a fancy to his Love, don’t be shy while John Galliano and Alec Baldwin swear by his Straight to Heaven, white crystal – but what all Kilian’s fragrances have in common is the power to intoxicate, seduce and incite. By the end of his journalism and communications studies at the Paris Sorbonne he had already made up his mind: Instead of taking part in running the LVMH group – in which Hennessey plays a leading role – he decided to create something of his own: perfumes. He went on to serve apprenticeships with the most recognised noses of the day, working in the perfume divisions of brands such as Dior, Giorgio Armani or Paco Rabanne. In 2007 he presented his first collection called L’Oeuvre Noire followed two years later by Arabian Nights. More recently came Asian Tales and this year the brand new ladies line In The Garden of Good and Evil which is unusually presented in a striking white clutch chest adorned with a golden snake – not in the typical black box with a tasselled key. Hidden inside is a snow-white flask with a unisex fragrance expressing vital emotions: desire, love, submission and sadness. These moods and feelings epitomise Kilian’s own life experiences which, with the assistance of several perfumers, he has turned into unconventional and addictive scents. It may have something to do with his roots, childhood memories or pride in his family background but many of his scents carry unmistakable traces of cognac, alcohol sugar or cask wood. Get drunk on desire and be drawn into the magic play of Kilian’s perfumes. You won’t regret it.
6/19/13 10:47 AM
— Do you wear your own fragrances? Of course! I change fragrances depending on the mood, clothes and occasion. For me perfume is the ultimate accessory. The occasion is the deciding factor. A TASTE OF HEAVEN, for example, is ideally suited for the office, BACK TO BLACK and AMBRE OUD for the evening – although I might reserve the former for more intimate occasions. For the weekend I enjoy PRELUDE TO LOVE and BAMBOO HARMONY because they keep you fresh and relaxed, perfectly attuned to your free time. — Where does your inspiration come from, for example when devising the new IN THE GARDEN collection? The IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD & EVIL collection came about as a new metaphor for the myth of original sin and the Garden of Eden. The motifs on either side of the flask thus depict all the most relevant symbols: the serpent, the vine and the gates to paradise. Apart from that, I can find inspiration in just about anything – be it a book, song, sculpture, film or photograph – whatever triggers strong emotions and is rooted in art.
HOW TO WEAR KILIAN’S FRAGRANCES AND IS HE WEARING THEM HIMSELF? HE ANSWERED THESE QUESTIONS EXCLUSIVELY FOR LUXURY GUIDE. — How do you get a perfumer to give a true interpretation of your conception? I work with three perfumers – Calice Becker, Albert Morillas and Sidonie Lancesseur. And I choose between them depending on which emotions I want to convey with my new perfume. They create fragrances in very different ways. Characteristic to Sidonie, for example, are simple compositions based on firm foundations, lending them a raw sexual undertone. She created the STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN, CRUEL INTENTIONS and INCENSE OUD fragrances for the Kilian collection. — Do you think a perfume can change a person’s image markedly for the better? Precisely, I even consider this to be the main criterion for choosing a fragrance. After all, you want to feel beautiful, sexy and confident; a well-selected fragrance can achieve that. — How should your perfumes be applied, in the traditional areas where the blood pulsates, or do you have a special recipe of your own? I have no secret recipe. Just put it anywhere you hope to be showered with kisses. Treehotel The phrase “free as a bird” gains new meaning at the Treehotel in northern Sweden. Its rooms are designed along the lines of birds nests, perched amidst the branches of trees. Whether they more resemble nests or UFOs is another matter; inside, you can expect a warm, inviting atmosphere and a great view of the Lapp country that surrounds the river Lule. The Treehotel also contains a sauna, restaurant and also a new conference space – naturally located too amidst the trees. The hotel is designed along the principle of minimal environmental impact, with electricity coming from a hydro-electric plant and all waste disposed of in a green manner. WWW.TREEHOTEL.SE

Romance amidst castle walls
Bastion
A bastion is a fortification where guards manned the guns around castles. And it is at one such location of a former bastion in Prague’s New Town ramparts, built during the reign of Charles IV, that we find this new, highly original restaurant. The design comes via Pavla Melková and Miroslav Cikán of the MCA Atelier architecture studio. The pair created an altitudinal structure that respects the surrounding rampart and which be fully opened up in the summer. Thanks to its garden and rooftop seats, you can enjoy the warm breeze of summer and a great view of Vyšehrad and Petřín. Bastion represents the first step in the wider renovation of the Albertov Slopes. WWW.BASTION-PRAGUE.CZ

A flood of light, soft playful colours and a magnificent view into the adjacent private gardens of the luxury hotel Marcel Dassault all serve to make the newly-reconstructed Café Artcurial in the heart of bustling Paris a soothing oasis of peace. The café and restaurant was designed by the renowned French architect Charles Zana; the site forms part of a famous auction house on the Champs Elysées, and serves as an homage to various iconic designers of the 20th century, primarily in its choice of furniture and decor. Its calm atmosphere and sense of cleanliness are complemented by the locale’s shades of gray and beige, smooth art deco lines and also its glass roof. WWW.ARTCURIAL.COM

Noma COPENHAGEN For the third year in a row, Copenhagen’s Noma heads Restaurant magazine’s list of the world’s top fifty restaurants. It has also received two out of a possible three Michelin stars. But don’t expect foie gras here. Situated in a historic harbour warehouse, Head Chef (and co-owner) René Redzepi presents northern-inspired cuisine, for example, the island cottage cheese “skyr” or meat from Greenalnd’s muskox, and even offers edible soil! Presently, Noma is working on a unique range of fruit juices. WWW.NOMA.DK

NEW YORK This much-loved venue among New York’s high society features a magnificent panoramic view of Central Park. A threestar Michelin restaurant that is guided by the notion that food is primarily an emotional experience. Each day a new menu offers a highly refined take on French and American cuisine. A renowned speciality of Head Chef Eli Kaimeh is Foie Gras Sherbet. You can even book a private dining room and work with the chef to create your own menu. WWW.PERSENY.COM

Three Michelin stars and a long-standing ranking among the best of the best demonstrate that fine dining is not just about juicy steaks. It has been ten years since Head Chef Alain Passard removed red meat from the menu of this elegant restaurant situated near the Musée Rodin in Paris, becoming a much sought-after magician in preparing fruit and vegetables. But Passard is not a strict vegetarian and his menu includes outstanding fish and poultry dishes. WWW.ALAIN-PASSARD.COM

SEBASTIÁN An experimental restaurant located in the hills near San Sebastián. Last year Mugaritz found itself ranked third in Britain’s prestigious Restaurant magazine’s list of top fifty venues. Its creative boss, Andoni Luis Aduriz, promises two and a half hours of sensual and emotional experiences. His speciality? Edible stones!

The Romantic
BASTION
T
he warm glow of the candlelight in the enchanting dining hall will immediately make an impression as you take your seat. Its black and white interior is tastefully decorated with designer furniture and various accessories. In the summer months, the outside garden is available for seating, with an airy patio also to be found in the rear of the restaurant. A number of courses are on offer, with combinations chosen per your taste. The menu is seasonally adjusted, with only the most beloved fare, without which it would simply not be the Bastion, surviving all-year-round. One such item is the date pudding with caramel sauce and brittle with warm English cream. This item will electrify your senses and leave your taste buds in overdrive. But you would be short-changing yourself if you began at the end of the menu, as Head Chef Radek Příhonský offers a dazzling array of delicious courses. For an appetiser, you can try the beef tartare (made from organic bull calf ); the dish is augmented with capers and baby shallots. Another interesting starter is the caramelised pear with goat cheese and a salad topped with pecans. The sweetness of the pears and maple syrup dressing perfectly balance the sharper taste of the cheese. For perfect harmony, order the Italian wine Soave Classico as an accompaniment. You can also order a warm second appetiser such as Risotto Amarone Bertani, cooked in red Amarone wine with parmesan and shallots. Or go straight to the entrée: you can choose from fresh fish, poultry beef sirloin or game. To

accompany your meal, the restaurant offers countless Czech and world wines and seventeen types of champagne, with drivers able to choose non-alcoholic red or white. In the winter months, the capacity of the restaurant is around sixty, while in the summer no restrictions are in effect. Be it a party with four hundred guests, a wedding or open air festival, the Bastion staff are ready and prepared. Bastion can also boast winning in its region at the Czech Gastronomy Awards 2012. The same year it also won first prize at the Grand Prix architectural wards. Whether you visit Bastion for a glass of good wine amidst a day strolling around Prague, or whether you’re there to sample a seven course meal, this charming locale will leave you enchanted and wanting to go back! David
BOWIE
T
From March 23rd to August 11th London’s Victoria and Albert Museum is housing a retrospective of one of the most iconic musicians of the twentieth century, SINGERSONGWRITER DAVID BOWIE. This represents the very first exhibition to map in detail the work of this charismatic artist, who influenced not only music but pop culture too. Text by VERONIKA ŠTEFANOVÁ
he exhibition bears the simple and apt title “David Bowie is”. The rest will be filled in by each visitor for themselves, as Bowie is a unique, inspirational figure who left a footprint on many different artistic genres. During the 1970s in particular, Bowie’s concerts resembled theatrical presentations, bringing to life the singer’s alter ego Ziggy Stardust, adorned in countless phantasmagorical costumes. Bowie is also the creator of countless videos, a producer, poet and talented actor (for example in The Man Who Fell to Earth, 1976, or Basquiat, 1996). In the latter Julian Schnabel film, Bowie portrayed artist Andy Warhol so well that the two essentially became one. David Bowie was always an individualist, determined to blaze his own path irrespective of what anyone else thinks. “Be who you are and, by the way, you can be whoever you want to be,” Bowie once said. At this exhibit, sponsored by, among others, Gucci, around three hundred items connected to the artist are on display, be they tour costumes, never-before-seen storyboards from music videos, handwritten texts or drawings, style sketches, diary entries, and also the works of other artists inspired by the king of glam rock. The chance to see such a fine collection may not come again in our lifetimes. VICTORIA&ALBERT MUSEUM, CROMWELL ROAD, LONDON, WWW.VAM.AC.UK

Even before the end of last year, Dolce&Gabbana brought its new spring/summer 2013 collection to Prague. Fifteen outfits were available for viewing at its Prague boutique, arriving exclusively from Milan. An inaugural party was attended by fashion experts, stylists, journalists, fans of the brand and Czech celebrities. Now, items from this collection, inspired by sunny Sicily and the good life, can be bought at the Dolce&Gabbana store in Prague’s Pařížská Street.
