Can Your Dentist Do Everything You Need?

• When it comes to knowledge and expertise it’s fair to say that not all dentists are created equal. That is not to say that some dentists are useless or have questionable experience, just that some are more qualified in certain areas than others. • The vast majority of dentists will easily be able to perform a routine check up for you, and will even be able to perform a vast range of different services such as cleanings, fillings and provide you with tips on oral health.

• However, when it comes to more complicated dental requirements it may be best to seek a second opinion. • Consider what would happen if you needed a root canal. This procedure can be exceptionally complex depending on the nature of your individual case. While newly qualified dentists will have undertaken endodontics (otherwise known as root canal treatment) as part of their study, their knowledge will not be as extensive as someone who has studied further.

• An endodontic expert will have undertaken a further three years of post graduate study which will go far beyond the basic study a general dentist will have achieved. • This does not mean to say that your normal dentist will not be able to perform your treatment well, but simply that a root canal specialist might be able to perform it better.

Which option should you choose? • It is up to you who you get to perform any treatment that you need doing, and the best thing you can do to help you make this decision is be open and honest with your normal dentist. Ascertain whether they can easily identify the problem area, and if so, do they feel confident that they can perform the necessary procedure. • If many roots are involved or there are problems with surrounding teeth then it can be difficult to gauge precisely where the pain is originating from, and therefore which tooth or roots need to be dealt with.

• If this is something your dentist is not sure about, then it may be wise for them to refer you on to someone who has more knowledge and skills. • Asides from this an expert will have the most relevant tools and equipment to be able to perform the task at hand. This will always give them an added advantage and a better outcome than someone who does not.

• Remember, you do not have to accept a referral that your dentist provides you. You can simply use them to provide a second opinion, or to seek out someone else to potentially perform the work. • You are more likely to heal quicker from any treatment if you have faith in the people who are involved in providing you with your care, so be confident in your own choices.
