Have Your Say
Whether you’ve had a great flight or feel that we could improve our service, we’d like to know. Drop us a line at khuluma@picasso.co.za. Hello J My name is Refilwe Mokoena and I travelled on kulula MN 461 from Lanseria Airport to Cape Town on March 8th. I had a lot of trouble booking the flight and subsequently checking in online. I called into the call centre to check in online, and Mr Wanda Pezisa went above and beyond to help me do so. He attempted to check me in from his desk, then called the staff at Lanseria Airport to request that they hold my seat. When they were unable to do this, he set about trying to check me in online from his side, which he was eventually able to do. This was a great example of going beyond the call of duty to deliver service to your customers. Thank you kulula! Refilwe Mokoena

I AM NOT supposed to write about sex, religion or politics, so I will write about politics, as I don’t know much about the other two. We are fast approaching South Africa’s fifth quinquennial (yes, it’s a real word) election, along with all the ranting and diatribe associated with the run-up to this glorious event. However, unlike election promises, everything you are about to read is true. As with most countries, we do have some political parties with names that were clearly not democratically elected. Contrary to popular belief, Agang is not based on the Cape Flats, the Economic Freedom Fighters are not fighting for economic freedom but for nationalisation, and the United Congress was formed due to the inability to unite in COPE. But South African political parties are still rather mundane compared to the world’s best. The UK must lead with the I Want to Drop a Blancmange Down Terry Wogan’s Y-Fronts Party, the Official Monster Raving Looney Party, and the Church of the Militant Elvis Party. Australia is not far behind with the Sun Ripened Warm Tomato Party and the Deadly Serious Party, while Canada has the Rhinoceros Party, although I suspect that most Canadians have no idea what a rhinoceros is, but they figured it sounded better than the Wet Moose Party. Then there are some parties that missed the political connotation entirely and took the party concept a little too literally, like the Party! Party! Party! and the Surprise Party of Australia, the House Party of Belgium, the Best Party of Iceland (small country – not much imagination), and once again from the land of Monty Python, the Brits come out on top with the Mongolian Barbeque Great Place to Party. Clearly all just looking for an excuse to party. The Americans take politics too seriously and thus have never had a funny political party. They did have a Guns and Dope Party, but that was dead serious. So the moral of the story is that if you want the best government, vote for a party that clearly does not contain any politicians.

ÜBER-EDITOR OF THE MONTH
Über-ed’s letter Loyiso Gola
I have a dream
picture: warren van rensburg
Let’s start from the beginning and acknowledge that we have come far as a country. If you as a black man jumped into a time machine, you would find no better time to be black than now. Don’t let the occasional pothole stress you; these are the good times. I consider my father, Justice Gola, to be the funniest person I know. I suspect I inherited my funny bones from him. He has been funny since his youth, but the opportunity to pursue a career in comedy was a myth in his time. On the other hand, I am able to express myself not only stage but also in South Africa’s longest-running and most successful satire TV show. In both mediums, I am able to express myself fully without holding back. This is a freedom I don’t take for granted. I’ll admit that sometimes the idea of people struggling for this freedom I now enjoy does slip my mind. It shouldn’t, though; it should be the premise to the narrative. We must not stop telling the South African story and reminding ourselves of how far we have come and how far we still need to go. What is the narrative? Well, that’s what we are deciding as a country at the moment. Do we fold or play the difficult hand? (That’s a poker reference.) As comrade Barry Roux would say, ‘What if I put to you’ that we as a country are at a crossroads? I feel like writing my own ‘I have a dream’ speech. The democracy we fought so hard for is being exercised. It’s reported that, on average, there are 30 protest marches in South Africa every day. That’s a society not living in fear of expressing its grievances. That something to be proud of. I was born in 1983, so I was six years and five months old when Nelson Mandela was released from Robben Island. I remember as a toddler we were told to go to school, finish our food and free Nelson Mandela. Which is a lot of pressure for a four-year-old. We kids did not even know what Mandela looked like. There were no photos of him. Now we take it for granted that we can just take photos and delete the ones we don’t like. When I was young, deleting a photo was unheard of. I am not a born free but I was not involved in the struggle, which makes me a middle child of this dispensation. My optimism about South Africa is overwhelming. I have lived through Betamax, VHS, cassette, CD, DVD, MP3, Michael Jordan, Jackson and Johnson. I went through the motions we are going through, and there is a lot to look forward to. ■
Who will be our next ed?
South Africa’s a funny place. It’s got lots of funny people. And some are damn hilarious. Every month, khuluma chooses a particularly amusing individual to be our über-editor. This funny man or woman then interrogates prominent South Africans for us. So book your flight for next month or head over to www.khulumaonline.co.za to see who it’ll be.

Flying 101: Fine dining
at 35 000 feet
Robertsons and kulula.com take the senses to new heights. ‘PLEASE LOOSEN YOUR seat belts’ is not a request you’d generally expect to hear as you reach cruising altitude on your afternoon flight from Jo’burg to Cape Town. But passengers on board selected kulula.com flights got more than they expected last month when, out of the blue, they were presented with a very special, three-course, haute-cuisine meal at 35 000 feet. The surprise ‘fine dining in the sky’ event was a collaboration between Robertsons, South Africa’s favourite spice people, and kulula.com. What made the meal even more remarkable was that each dish on the menu was made with a specific combination of Robertsons herbs and spices, from pistachio-encrusted beef fillet to minted halloumi ravioli, right down to the milk-a-roon dessert delight. It’s all proof that with the right combination of Robertsons herbs and spices one can transform practically any meal, and take one’s senses to a whole new level – in this case 35 000 feet in the air! The menu was designed by none other than Reuben Riffel – the face of Robertsons and the newest judge on MasterChef South Africa – and prepared by dedicated chefs at Foodirections

(Comair’s in-house catering hub). Passengers were even more delighted during the launch flight when the effervescent Jenny Morris – well-known local chef and host of Jenny Cooks Morocco – introduced Reuben, who then took passengers through his hautecuisine creations. ‘I always use Robertsons herbs and spices in my dishes at home,’ said Reuben. ‘They completely transform the meal and give me the opportunity not just to cook, but also to create.’ Safely on the ground – and with their bellies bursting – passengers received a complimentary gift as they crossed

the air bridge. Project ‘Sky Dine’, as it was code-named, proved that with the right combination of Robertsons herbs and spices, the taste-buds really do take off.

Looking for a fun time? You can bet on Phuket KATA PALM RESORT and Spa. The name says it all. Poolside chilling under palm trees, soothing spa massages that’ll make you purr, and much, much more. All for the meagre price of R10 774 per person sharing for seven nights. Now that’s what I like to call a big ol’ fat bargain. This package deal includes return flights from Jozi to Phuket and a weeklong stay in a spiffy superior pool-view room (with room service!), plus brekkie on the house. Good news for those who are travelling with the Brady Bunch – the resort has a Kids’ Club and Playground that will keep the little ones happy for days on end. All you’ll have to do is play Marco Polo with your tods in the wading pool and tell them bedtime stories at the end of a fun-filled day. Adults can take Thai cooking classes (a great bonding session for you and the missus), or you can try your hand at the age-old Thai pastime of fruit carving. Trust me: a whole new world of food presentation opens up when you know how to do more than just peel a banana. With so much to do and see in Phuket, I’d egg you on to go overboard – literally. Catch a wooden boat to Phang Nga Bay, step onto a kayak and slowly cruise around the feet of giant, mind-boggling limestone cliffs that will make your jaw drop, guaranteed.

And make sure you don’t miss the Phuket FantaSea Show – this grand-scale performance features everything from trapeze artists to elephants, and offers the perfect mix of Thai tradition and tech that will have you yelling, ‘We want more’. The list of cool stuff to do here goes on and on and on. And the only things this awesome offer doesn’t include are high-season airfare surcharges, tips, meals, drinks and personal stuff like souvenirs. If you’re thinking, ‘Give me the legal stuff, please,’ here it is: package prices are from a starting price per person sharing, subject to availability and correct at the time of publication. Single supplements and standard kulula.com legal stuff also applies. That’s it, no catch – unless you hook a big one on an island fishing excursion. So from me, Trev: ‘Yin dee krap krap.’ That’s Thai for: ‘You’re welcome.’

Feeding freedom freed eedom Anna Trapido explores the man behind the myth through Madiba’s taste in food.

IN STORYBOOKS, GODS, saints and superheroes magic up miracles with which to change the world. The reality is far more prosaic. Superman’s not coming. It is up to people like you and me to do good deeds and right wrongs. Gods can live on fairy dust and ambrosia, but the rest of us need proper food to sustain our struggles. Looking at heroic lives through lunch (or the lack thereof) serves up social, political, economic and emotional insights second to none. We are, after all, what we eat and drink. My book Hunger for Freedom: The Story of Food in the Life of Nelson Mandela (Jacana Media, in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation) charts the personal and political journey of South Africa’s first democratically elected president, from the rural corn-grinding stone of his boyhood, through the culinary diversity of his multiracial political alliances, and on into prison hunger strikes, presidential-inauguration meals and the attempts of a family long separated to rebuild a collective identity across the dinner table. Far from trivialising the topic, a focus on food finds the man who is so often forgotten in the myth of Madiba. In recent years there has been a well-meaning but erroneous tendency to deify Madiba. Such deification
kulula.com
Eat 27-2.indd 23
is dangerous for our democracy; stories of supermen sweeping in and single-handedly saving society are not conducive to the mass-participatory egalitarian order we are striving for. Talking about what he ate reminds us that Madiba was a real person who, along with other real people, worked long and hard to change the world for the better. Deification diminishes the personal cost for all those involved. Gods may feel no pain, but real men miss the minutiae of family life. In 1986 Madiba, who had by then been in prison for 22 years, reminded his wife of ‘the wonderful dish you used to prepare for supper. The spaghetti and simple mince from some humble township butchery! As I entered the house from the gym in the evening that flavour would hit me full flush in the tongue.’ You can almost taste the longing for home in that statement. The history of South Africa’s transition to democracy can be read in the pots of the collective, not just the plate of an individual. From Lillian Ngoboza’s chicken stew at Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s house in Cape Town on the night of his release from prison in 1990 to the 1995 gastro-reconciliation of koeksisters with Betsie Verwoerd in Orania. Later, there was the personal transition from president to pensioner made manifest in housekeeper Xoliswa Ndoyiya’s chutney-chicken recipe, wife Graca Machel’s caranguejo recheado (stuffed crabs) and his idiosyncratic breakfast choice of Frosties with warm milk. The best sorts of heroes are real people precisely because they are real – so real that sometimes they do odd things with their cereal.

El cheapo romance
People once believed in free love, so why not free (or at least cheap) dates? Will Edgcumbe eyes the specials menu. GOING ON DATES is awesome, but let’s get down to brass tacks right away: it tends to be expensive. Fancy restaurants, drinks poured by bartenders who call themselves mixologists, weekends away, hell, even watching a movie at the cinema – going on dates generally costs a pretty penny. This means either that one of you spends the entire time stressing about how you’re going to afford food for the rest of the month, or that dates simply don’t happen. Unfortunately, neither of these outcomes will result in fun times. If you’ve been with your partner a while, and thus spend considerably less energy trying to impress them, you may have found yourself eating a pizza on the couch in your gym clothes, watching four episodes of Breaking Bad and calling it a date. This might be something fun to do together to relax, but making it your regular date night will inevitably make one of you feel that the other doesn’t care for romance any more. As a service to you, we’ve put in the hard slog and come up with some cheap dates that will reignite the good vibes.
pictures: supplied
Stargazing This date isn’t only cheap; it’s practically free. Just grab a blanket, some snacks and that bottle of plonk from your cupboard. If you’re in a major city, you

won’t see stars like you will in the middle of nowhere, but it’s still great to watch the sun go down and the stars blink on one by one. Lion’s Head in Cape Town or the Maropeng area outside Jo’burg are good spots. Or you could wait for the next power failure and stargaze from the comfort of your garden.
Picnics Take whatever you were going to eat at home, gooi it in a Tupperware, and head to the nearest park or the beach for a chilled picnic. It’s amazing what a change of scenery can do to elevate a meal from ‘sustenance provision’ to ‘assisting with special times’. Stunning free picnic spots include Durban’s Botanical Gardens, the Company’s Garden or Scarborough Beach in Cape Town, and Burgers Park in Pretoria.
Restaurant specials No matter where you live, on any given night of the week there are bound to be some nifty restaurant specials. Check out www.groupon.co.za, which usually has a pretty good voucher deal going, or www.foodspecials.co.za and www.dine4less.co.za, which aggregate all of the restaurant specials in your area.

Lize Hartley ditches the credit card and swaps till she drops. Fancy browsing for interesting threads without the fear of clearing your credit card at the end of the month? Here’s how it works. A group of people bring some things they no longer want, and then trade them with other people for things they do want. Simple, yes, but there are various ways of doing it. Set a price. Stipulate that all items are valued at one amount. That way people who don’t have anything to swap can pay for their items instead.
kulula.com
Shop 27_1.indd 27
Keep prices low, though, to maintain the spirit of frugality, and to keep the event something that even the brokest of the broke can benefit from and enjoy. Various prices. This works well for larger events, as opposed to swap shops organised by a group of friends. There are several prices (for example, R10, R20, R50), each of which has a certain colour tag assigned to it. Items are colourcoded as swappers arrive, and
like is exchanged for like or, if you have nothing to swap, you can pay the amount instead. For the more mathematically gifted, you can also trade several items for several others, as long as each group’s value adds up to the same amount. Take your calculator along, just in case. All for one and one for all. No money, no valuation. Any one item is traded for any other and, if need be, swappers can do a three-way trade. This works best when done

in a small group of people who know one another, as it may lead to some bartering or even a full-blown fashion fight – and nobody wants to get a stiletto in the eye. There are also some rules and ideas to bear in mind to make this event work for everyone: Bring decent stuff. Don’t try to swap your old takkies with holes in them, or that tent-shaped tablecloth of a dress that your granny gave you 15 years ago. Rather treat this as an opportunity to clear out any items you don’t wear very often or that don’t fit you any longer. Remember, it’s not a department store. Before you walk into the swap shop, brace yourself for little success. Yes, there’s a chance that you will walk away with some treasures, but because the selection is smaller, so are your chances of finding something to your taste and in your size. Treat it as a fun day with friends, in that case! Bring a friend. This isn’t a rule as much as a tip, but if you’re doing a small swap shop among friends, urge every person to bring one friend along who is not in that circle. That way you’ll have a wider selection of items to choose from (not to mention more variety in taste, size, and style!), which means better shopping, as well as the chance to meet and mingle with potential new friends. Make a day of it. Since you won’t be spending money as you would with normal shopping, urge all swappers to bring a plate of snacks and something to drink.

Street smarts An alternative to this thrifty form of shopping is to do what you should otherwise do with old clothes: donate them to a worthy cause. But there’s a new way to get involved, thanks to an initiative called Street Store. In short, it’s a rent-free, premise-free, overall just plain free ‘pop-up’ clothing store. People donate their old clothes, and these are hung up on cardboard hangers and packed neatly just like they would be in any store. But the twist is that this is aimed specifically at homeless people, who can come to the Street Shop and shop for themselves – for free! This amazing initiative started in Cape Town but was conceptualised to have potential global reach, so anyone is urged to host a Street Store in their own city. With easy step-by-step instructions on their website and access to open-source files to ensure that folks can access everything they need to host one of these pop-up shops, it couldn’t be easier to have a Street Store in your city. Check out thestreetstore.org for more info.

he cool maritime breezes add a touch of magic to our grapes. Sumaridge Estate Wines is committed to a philosophy of maintaining a balance with nature. This carries through to our wines, which have a distinct sense of place and reflect the natural beauty of the terroir At Sumaridge, each cultivar has its own specifically chosen site. We respect and work in harmony with natural assets that include a superb array of indigenous flora and fauna. The perfect marriage of exceptional location, climate and soil, coupled with expert wine crafting, gives birth to signature wines that are distinctively elegant, ample in body and complex in flavour. We are delighted to welcome guests to our tasting room, dining room and gardens with wonderful views across the Debos dam, to beyond Betty’s Bay, some 28 kilometers away. The tasting room is open from 10.00am - 3.00pm every day, where the full range of wines from the current collection is available for tasting, and each is for sale. Anthony Sharpe finds a little bit of heaven (and a whole lot of wine) on earth in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley.
Hemel-en-Aarde. The name says it all really. If you understand Afrikaans, that is. For those who don’t, it means ‘Heaven and Earth’. ‘Heaven on Earth’ might be a more appropriate name for this picturesque stretch of the R320 on the outskirts of Hermanus, which winds its way through the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Upper Hemelen-Aarde Valley and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge on its way to Caledon. The geographical and winemaking nomenclature was something of a sticky point among the locals, according to Holly Bellingham and Simon Turner, the vivacious, slightly eccentric and extremely friendly couple who own Sumaridge Wine Estate, which lies in the upper valley. ‘In the past there have been some pretty vigorous debates around the classification of each ward,’ Holly tells me. As we work our way through a bottle of the estate’s
kulula.com
Sleep 27.indd 33
2012 Merlot, Holly and Simon talk me through the history, the character and the realpolitik of the valley – the latter of which sounds like the basis for a localised version of Dynasty.
Character-building It’s a characterful valley, all right, and nowhere is that better reflected than at Sumaridge. Upon arrival at the tasting room, we’re greeted by a hearty handshake and a glass of the crisp, dry Merlot Malbec and Carbernet Franc-blend rosé by the effusive Simon, who welcomes us to a long table surrounded by retired British tourists and loaded with platters of melon, prosciutto, cheeses and breads. From the balcony, you can look out over much of the 210-hectare estate, all the way down to the sea, which gives clues as to the conditions that make Chardonnay
and Pinot Noir the prime varietals grown on these slopes. Only 42 hectares of the estate are laid to vine, while 60+ hectares remain virgin fynbos. It’s the perfect introduction to a place where appreciating the quality and joie de vivre of wine seems to hold as much import as making money from the stuff. Simon and Holly bought Sumaridge in 2008, when the estate was in a very different state. In the process, they inherited winemaker Gavin Patterson. Standing on the cool, concrete floor of the estate’s cellar, Gavin tells me of the immediate rapport he had with Simon and Holly. ‘When I met with them, I explained that I didn’t want to work for someone who only wanted a wine farm for bragging rights. If I was going to stay, they had to make a commitment to taking Sumaridge to its full potential.’

Vino Africanus That Gavin stayed is testimony to Holly and Simon’s commitment to turning the estate into a force to be reckoned with – as are the numerous awards Sumaridge has picked up in recent years. The estate exports a significant proportion of its produce, primarily to markets in the UK and Northern Europe, and their vintages have found their way into some pretty swanky ice buckets, including those at the South African High Commission and 10 Downing Street. In addition to the estate’s awardwinning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (the 2010 vintage won two IWC South African trophies), Gavin’s other flagship wines are the Maritimus white blend (65% Sauvignon Blanc, 26% Chardonnay, 6% Semillon, 3% Viognier) and the Epitome red blend (57% Shiraz, 43% Pinotage), both of which

were given four stars in this year’s Platter’s Wine Guide. The winemaker waxes lyrical about his passion for the tastes and scents of Africa, and his desire to incorporate these into truly African wines.
Lodged in place As you may have gathered from the photographs, Sumaridge is rather a pretty spot. The sort of place in which you’d want to wake up and maybe take a plunge in a Jacuzzi while gazing out at acres of vines and the mountains that lie beyond. Where you’d like to play a spot of boules while sipping on a glass of vino. Or perhaps a whole bottle of the stuff while braaing, before dozing off on the lawn. Good thing there’s a five-bedroom selfcatering lodge – the sort of lodge Holly describes as ‘made for house parties’. The
patio looking out over the estate has the aforementioned Jacuzzi, and the living area is huge. And, for those quieter moments, each of the five en-suite rooms has its own private balcony. From your base of operations, you can explore the estate – I took a memorable drive through the farm on the roof of a Land Rover, trying unsuccessfully to document the landscape without losing my camera overboard or being swept off by a low-flying pine branch. Saner guests can go hiking, mountain-biking, fishing or birdwatching, or hop in the car for a 10-minute drive to one of Hermanus’s beaches. The location is simply stunning. Intrigue, good cheer, passion, wine and boules? If that doesn’t sound like heaven on earth, I don’t know what does. See you in the Jacuzzi…

More violent, lovelorn young-adult fantasy to gobble up the pocket money of the movies’ biggest demographic. Based on the first of a trilogy of fantasy novels by Veronica Roth, Divergent is set in a world where people are divided into five distinct factions based on human virtues. The film tells the tale of Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley), who is … wait for it … divergent, because she doesn’t fit into any one faction. Is that allegory I can smell? Anyway, this sets the scene for some pretty angsty, mildly violent and reasonably entertaining fodder that has been favourably compared to The Hunger Games. So at least you know what you’re in for. Blue Sky Studios have been building on their success with the Ice Age movies, and this is their first sequel outside of that franchise. Rio 2 follows on from 2011’s wildly colourful effort, and features the returning voice talents of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx and Jermaine Clement, among others. This time, our moonstruck macaws, Tyler and Jewel, find themselves in the Amazon, where they encounter Jewel’s longlost father, a threat to the Amazon, and their old nemesis, Nigel, the sulphurcrested cockatoo. It’s a standard setup from a studio that can deliver the goods, and it should keep kids of all ages happy for at least a couple of holiday hours. Anticipatometer: 3/5 ■ ■ ■

This time Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) finds himself and and his arachnoid alter ego up against two ridiculous new villains, Electro (played by Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx) and the Rhino (played by Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti), both of whom seem to have connections to the sinister company OsCorp. Spidey must also face the return of his old friend and heir-apparent to the OsCorp empire, Harry Osborne (Dane DeHaan). The first film was a slightly middling affair, but the injection of more intrigue – and more villains – should hopefully liven up proceedings this time around. Anticipatometer: 4/5 ■ ■ ■ ■

Anthony Sharpe buries his nose in April’s publishing picks. Helen Suzman: Bright Star in a Dark Chamber
What’s Gone Wrong? On the brink of a failing state
Robin Renwick Jonathan Ball
Alex Boraine Jonathan Ball
Despite the recent mudslinging around her legacy, Helen Suzman’s name is one that remains firmly associated with freedom. When Robin Renwick was appointed British ambassador to South Africa in 1987, he formed a deep friendship with Suzman. Now, drawing on Suzman’s personal papers, Renwick sets out to capture the qualities of a woman who, in the face of the hostility of the apartheid regime, carved out a unique role for herself as an intrepid fighter for human rights, simple justice, and the rights of prisoners and the disenfranchised majority. What emerges is an affectionate portrait of a woman with biting wit and fierce intelligence who wasn’t afraid to stand up for her principles, no matter the cost.
Perhaps not the cheeriest of reads this month, but it’s incisive, essential stuff nevertheless from one of South Africa’s leading political commentators. Two decades after South Africa achieved a peaceful and miraculous transition to democracy, Boraine wonders what’s gone wrong with the country, attempting to answer the question from the vantage point of his wide experience as a churchman, parliamentarian, co-founder of Idasa, and deputy chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He goes beyond strong criticism, offering proposals to prevent our country from becoming a failed state – and squandering the very freedom we hold so dear.
MapStudio Freedom, adventure, the open road… It’s a cliché that exists for a very good reason: there are few feelings more liberating than that of hitting the road with your destination a speck on the far side of the horizon. Road Tripping South Africa features 20 iconic road trips, all manageable in a normal sedan, along quiet, scenic back roads to places you probably didn’t know existed. Each journey is divided into sections, providing detailed maps, distances, driving times, highlights, regionaltourism contact details, useful websites and further reading, suggestions on where to eat, drink and stay, and indicators of child and pet-friendliness.

High Hopes Columbia Records Bruce Springsteen has still got it all: a fine physique; an untouchable stage performance; and that voice. He is like a finely aged wine, overflowing with smoky overtones and an enduring aftertaste. High Hopes is a solid offering from The Boss, full of character and commentary. His music still wears a soulful overcoat and American flavour, even if it bears the unmistakeable signs of wear and tear. Springsteen has attempted to bring in new technologies and tones, which never feel out of place. The level of musicianship, storytelling and general songwriting is distinctively timeless. I must say that I did have high hopes for this album, wondering which of his songs would stand out as an untimely classic. I found part of that in ‘Dream Baby Dream’, mostly because it reminds me of a youthful Springsteen. He appears to be an enduring master of his trade – and once a master, always a master.

He already bears the signs of being ahead of the times and offers something original in his approach to music. It may be difficult to believe, but Jacobs’ albums are written and performed solely by the man himself. While certainly a lonely task, he never allows the music to become isolated and unwieldy. Rather, his music has an upbeat, festive quality, especially with such a standout opening track, ‘Love Can’ – the track that drew me to him. Unfortunately, despite having some quality song writing and interesting work, the album runs its course far too quickly. The music, and the genre into which is fits, has a tendency towards staleness and predictability. Nevertheless, I still hold a great deal of respect for this young star. Rock on, please, we will be listening.
Shadowclub Goodbye Wild Child Just Music Throughout 2013, these local rockers could do no wrong, gracing the stages of numerous festivals and garnering new fans at every show. Their debut album, Guns and Money, was highly rated and a tough act to follow. Now, having given their sophomore album, Goodbye Wild Child, a good deal of my time, I think they have pulled off the miracle of reliability and persistence. Even though the world has seen a great deal of rock ’n roll in its time, very few have the flair to pull it off well. Shadowclub have a particularly attractive musical spirit and loads of experience. Front man Jacques Moolman is a desolate, strange but striking breed of man, and it is his faith in his art that drives this band. Ballsy, tough as nails, and groovier than a pair of football shorts and an afro, Goodbye Wild Child is another impressive album for what is soon to be an iconic act.

The Elder Scrolls Online
text and pictures: supplied by BT Games
The long-running and much-loved Elder Scrolls series is veering off in a different direction by tacking ‘massively multiplayer online’ onto its traditional ‘role-playing game’ status. In other words, it’s going the way of World of Warcraft, taking the familiar fantasy continent of Tamriel and opening it up to thousands of concurrent players for a smattering of online-only adventuring. In a world set 1 000 years before the events of Skyrim, you’ll see all the familiar Elder Scrolls races (like Nords, Bretons and Argonians) available for your selection, along with four character classes that each provide a unique style of play to suit any taste. The developers promise tons of content to keep players engaged, with loads of quests and a huge game world to explore. Whether you’re adventuring alone or with friends (or with total strangers for that matter), The Elder Scrolls Online hopes to offer series fans a whole new way to enjoy its robust universe. Available in BT Games stores or online from 4 April.

lease New re 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil As Brazil prepares to host the biggest sporting event the nation has even seen, EA is once again set to release a special World Cup edition of its popular FIFA franchise. Much like the World Cup South Africa edition released in 2010, the 2014 edition takes a step away from the core series to lower the barrier of entry and make the game a little more accessible to a wider market. To echo this sentiment, the game will only be available on Xbox 360 and PS3 – there’s no next-gen version in the pipes, largely owing to the poor penetration of the Xbox One and PS4 in Brazil. What you get is a couple of story modes (‘Road to the FIFA World Cup’ and ‘Road to Rio’), as well as plenty of presence from the local teams. There are also a number of features unique to this edition, such as Adidas Ball Physics, a spiffy new dribbling system and tons of new animations. On top of that, all 203 international teams that competed in the qualifiers will be fully playable, whether they made the final cut or not. Get World Cup fever early and pick up a copy from 18 April!

Loyiso Gola: Good morning PJ. PJ Powers: Hello Loyiso. LG: Thanks for taking time out to be my first victim. PP: Of course. LG: Okay cool, let’s get into it. First question: How is the process of buying your music rights back going? PP: I am making progress, but when you’re dealing with someone with a distant relationship with the truth it becomes laborious and expensive. LG: [Laughs] PP: I’ll get there though. LG: So you’ve been in the game for more than three decades, huh? PP: Yeah. LG: How do you feel the music business has changed since you started? PP: Okay, the upside is that because of digital recordings, many young artists can get themselves heard with much less schlep and without having to spend a fortune. The end quality of a recording in the end is infinitely better. You can collaborate with people all around the globe on a particular piece of music at the same time. And your music is automatically released globally, thanks to the likes of iTunes and other platforms. For example, my new release ‘Destiny’ is being purchased in Australia, Sweden, the UK… LG: That’s cool. I sense there’s a downside coming, though. PP: Indeed. The downside is that people who can’t sing become singers because of Auto-Tune. Bands who can’t play become overnight successes. I feel to a degree music has been de-souled. LG: De-souled? PP: My own word, I know. If you have a healthy Twitter following, you are deemed worthy of airtime. Radio compilers – not all, but some – have become little demigods, particularly with regards to South African music. It’s all about format, procedure and, and, and… Hello, this is about music! LG: [Laughs] Okay. How many music revolutions have you gone through during your career? You know, cassette, CDs, MP3s. PP: I’ve been released on seven single, LP, which is obviously making a big comeback, cassette, CD, MP3, and now, as I said earlier, globally, thanks to the internet.

LG: What was your reaction to the invention of the iPod? PP: The iPod? Oh yay, now we can live in constant noise, heaven forbid we should have any silence, just in case we have to think! LG: [Laughs] I kind of like my iPod. PP: No, seriously, I think it’s brilliant. LG: Technology aside, what do you think has helped your music to live so long? PP: I think trying not to follow. I never ever wanted to sound like anyone else, and a good healthy dose of refusing to accept words like can’t, won’t, no, don’t, target market. But mostly because of the incredible love and loyalty I have received from die-hard fans. And, very importantly, wanting to be special, not thinking I am special. That’s when you go into the danger area. LG: Oh come on, you are special! PP: [Laughs] Thank you. LG: Do you play any musical instruments? PP: I play piano, badly… LG: [Laughs] PP: …and guitar quite well. LG: What do you think is the sexiest instrument and why? PP: Hmm, the sexiest instrument is a toss-up between baritone sax and lead guitar – depends who’s playing. LG: It does. Okay, independent or major label – what do you think? PP: Independent. You’re not a number, they care, more personal contact and less bull. LG: Okay, what has been your best collaboration? PP: My most successful was with Steve Kekana. My most interesting and exciting, HHP. LG: Nice. And what would be your ultimate?

PP: My ultimate for now, Karen Zoid. LG: You worked with the late great Brenda Fassie. Do you have any memories of her that stand out? PP: Brenda was one of the most talented women I have ever had the privilege of working with. Talk about having the X factor – Brenda had it all. Brenda was a friend, and we worked and played together a lot. I was incredibly saddened by her demise and devastated at the news of her passing. LG: Yeah. PP: I was in Cuba when I received the news. But I was proud that South Africa honoured her the way they did. I miss her, she was real. LG: Wow. Okay, you’ve also received a letter from Nelson Mandela. How did that feel? PP: I felt proud, honoured, special, surprised, overwhelmed, elated and privileged that he knew that I existed. LG: Sjoe! PP: Um, how much space do you have in this article? LG: [Laughs] Okay, thinking of the struggle, how did it feel to be banned, you bad girl? PP: Being banned was hard, you know. I felt alone. But then again, I did have the ANC, SWAPO, and FRELIMO supporting me. Not being heard on any radio stations
made it really hard to keep my career alive, but I’d be a bad girl all over again if I had to be. I was standing up for what I believed in. LG: Are you still in touch with old group members of Pantha and Hotline? PP: Not really. I think life moves, and if you hang on you get stuck and you get old. I have a bit of Facebook contact with them. Alistair Coakley produced my latest album, but socially, no. LG: Okay. So tell me, does anyone call you Penelope Jane? PP: [Laughs] LG: Is it only when they’re mad? PP: No one ever gets mad with me! LG: [Laughs]

SANRAL’S I-TRAFFIC CONTRIBUTES
TO SAFER AND LESS STRESSFUL
www.itraffic.co.za
JOURNEYS
March 2014
Thousands of South African road users travelling along the country’s busiest highways are now using smart phones and the Internet to plan their journeys in advance or receive live updates about road conditions, congestion and anticipated travel times between destinations. The i-Traffic system used by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) gives commuters access to the latest available technology and brings South Africa in line with modern global trends in intelligent transport management.
When accidents or other incidents are detected this information is posted on overhead electronic signposts, referred to as variable message signs. Road users are informed about incidents which may have an impact on their journey and the estimated duration of delays. Similar information is conveyed when roads are under construction or when lane closures occur.
“The comfort and safety of our road users are our highest concerns,” says SANRAL’s General Manager of Communications, Vusi Mona. “By giving them advanced warnings of accidents, planned construction activities or traffic-related information on specific stretches, we are making journeys less stressful and contributing to road safety.”
“This real time information is of the greatest importance for our efforts to make the South African highways safer,” says Mona. “We can immediately alert traffic enforcement authorities and emergency services about incidents which they need to respond to. SANRAL’s On-road Services are also on 24/7 standby to provide medical assistance, traffic management and the moving of stranded vehicles. The latest innovation is to make vital information directly available to road users with access to the Internet, mobile devices and social networks. SANRAL’s i-Traffic website – www.itraffic.co.za – contains a wealth of information concerning road conditions, construction projects and adverse situations that may have an impact on the length and quality of a journey.
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) was introduced by SANRAL to meet the growing need among road users to have access to real-time information about road conditions. It already proved its value during the construction phase of the new Gauteng Freeway System when extensive road works were undertaken to improve the quality of the highway network linking South Africa’s premier economic hubs.
The i-Traffic twitter accounts for Gauteng (@itrafficgp), Cape Town ( CapeTownFreeway) and KwaZulu-Natal (@i_trafficKZN) currently have around 60 000 followers, while many visit the website to keep abreast of the regular updates. Traffic reporters on national and regional radio stations also have access to this data, thus adding another layer of information to commuters.
The system is also in place the country’s two other major destinations, Cape Town and Durban, and will be gradually expanded on strategic sections of the 16 000km national road network managed by SANRAL.
“This information enables our road users to plan in advance for long journeys – but also alerts them about sudden incidents which require changes to travel plans or consideration of alternative routes,” says Mona. “It reduces the impact of congestion and rising fuel prices and saves our road users time and money spent on travelling.”
The system contributes significantly to the safety of road users by making information available to SANRAL’s emergency response units and On-road Services.
At the core of the system is a number of closed-circuit television cameras placed at strategic positions along the highway. The collected images and data are then relayed to a traffic management centre where the information is monitored, disseminated and analysed.

Freedom is being able to look in the mirror and say you’re okay. You’re not perfect, but you’re okay
PP: My whole family and a few very close friends call me Penelope, and yes, mum saying Penelope Jane means something’s up. LG: I’ll bet. Now PJ, getting back to the music, do you still go through the same process when making an album as you did when you started out? PP: I do. LG: How does it go down? PP: Firstly, I write the material, normally much more than I need for one release, so I have some choice. Then you get a good engineer and a producer you can trust. Someone with a fresh young head – not age, but ideas. Then you choose which musicians are best for the sound you’re creating. That’s if you’re using real musicians, which I always do. And away you go. Like I said, what’s changed for me is the way we record. Digital has taken a lot of time off the schedule. LG: Nice. Okay, quick-fire. What’s your favourite 80s song? And what’s your absolute worst?
kulula.com
Interview 1 27.indd 57
PP: My worst is ABBA’s ‘Fernando’ – ugh. My best is Sipho Hotstix Mabuse’s ‘Burnout’. I hope those were both from the 80s! [Laughs] LG: I think ABBA was the 70s, but your comment still stands. What song made you the most money? PP: Well, Mike Fuller Music made all the money, but I made a few bucks out of the 17 gold discs. LG: On the subject of discs, is there an album you’re not proud of? PP: Not proud of the last album, Hotline, I did with Mike Fuller, we were in litigation with him at the time, so it was a very negative energy in the band’s creativity. LG: Not cool, man. Now, the hair. Do you feel you’re stuck with your hairstyle because you’ve had it for long now? PP: No, I love my hairstyle. I wonder if anyone ever asks Rod Stewart, Tina Turner or Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, Tshepo Tshola or Hugh Masekela that question? LG: I think you’ve got more going on than bra Hugh, hey.
PP: [Laughs] LG: Do you know anyone called Jabulani? PP: Of course, HHP’s real name is Jabulani, and I have met many… LG: I guess it would be too much to ask for his name actually to be Hip-Hop. PP: …not to mention the 2010 Soccer World Cup ball. LG: [Laughs] So this is the Freedom and Free Stuff issue of khuluma. What does freedom mean to you? PP: Freedom is being able to look in the mirror and say you’re okay. You’re not perfect, but you’re okay. Freedom comes from doing the next right thing. Freedom allows us all to be who we should be, it allows us to aspire to be the best, it allows us to maximise our full potential. LG: I like the way you put that. Almost 20 years ago, you released Woman Of Africa. How does it feel to be a woman of Africa today? How far do you think we’ve come in the past 20 years? PP: I think women in Africa have come a long way, but I believe we’ve tackled just the tip of the iceberg. It’s a fight I will fight with my last breath. I’m proud and consider myself an African woman, and I believe this country wouldn’t be where it is today without the strength and tenacity of its women. LG: Some people have made a fuss about you coming out. How do you feel about this? PP: The only thing I have ever come out of is my mother’s womb, and I don’t recall there being too much fuss. LG: [Laughs] Fair enough! Okay, PJ, that just about wraps it up. Last and most important question. What’s your sangoma’s name? PP: How would you say The Universe or Quantum Physics? LG: [Laughs] PJ, it’s been awesome. Thank you so much. PP: Cheers Loyiso.

Daniel Petersen III has played the drums for presidents, been endorsed by Yamaha (for life) and is studying music at the University of the Western Cape. He also happens to be 11 years old. Loyiso Gola prods the prodigy. Loyiso Gola: Hello Daniel. Daniel Petersen III: Hi Loyiso, how are you doing? LG: I’m fine, thank you. Aren’t you supposed to be at school? DP: Well, I don’t go to school because I do home school. LG: Oh wow. That’s very cool. Okay, first question. Do you play any instruments other than the drums? You were a real show-off when you were two. You’re very showbiz. DP: [Laughs] Thank you. LG: Now, home-schooling. Tell me about that.
DP: Yeah, I build my academics around my music. It’s much easier for me because I can do everything in my own time. LG: You’re studying drums at university, but you’re still in primary school. Tell me about that. DP: Being a kid at UWC is not always easy, because my friends have parties on the weekends and I still have to go to university on Saturdays. LG: Okay, do you have a specific kind of music that you prefer drumming to? I listen to rap music, but I tend to think the beats are very monotonous, where there might be some other genres that are more interesting.

Sometimes I get treated like I’m gold, and it’s really ridiculous. Because I’m not gold DP: Well, I listen to Usher – he’s like a combination of rock and pop, I think. I listen to Justin Timberlake. Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, lots of people. LG: So you don’t get to spend too much time with your friends, then? DP: I spend just enough time with my friends. I see from your jersey that you’re an Arsenal fan. LG: I’m a big Arsenal fan. What’s your team? DP: Chelsea. LG: Okay, thank you, this interview is over, I don’t talk to Chelsea people. Goodnight. DP: [Laughs] Bye! LG: I’m joking! I’m not that judgmental. Do you play sports? DP: I play soccer, squash and swimming. LG: Do you think you could beat me at squash? DP: Maybe, maybe not. LG: [Laughs] Are you good? DP: I’m very good. LG: Cool! Back to the interview. Who is the one person you’d love to drum for? DP: Sjoe. There are a lot. Maybe Beyoncé, or Justin Timberlake, or Bruno Mars. Maybe Eminem.

LG: Because you obviously play with adults, right? DP: Yeah. LG: Do they show you the same respect as they show other adults? DP: Yes, actually sometimes I get treated like I’m gold, and it’s really ridiculous. Because I’m not gold. LG: Is it annoying? DP: It’s pretty annoying. LG: [Laughs] Do you ever just say, ‘Guys, take it easy, I’m 11.’ DP: Yes I do. Let me give you an example: I like chocolate. So when people think I’m hungry, they look at me and say, ‘Give him a chocolate. He’s hungry!’ It’s ridiculous. LG: [Laughs] That’s funny. I can imagine. Listen, when we arranged this
interview, I decided I had to treat you like any other person I’d interview. Not like an 11-year-old, but like a human being, who pays tax. So I won’t offer you chocolates. Now you’ve got an endorsement from Yamaha. They’re sponsoring you for life. DP: That’s another example. They’re sponsoring me for life! It’s an honour. LG: How long do you think you’re going to drum for? Think you’ll ever get tired of it and think of going into accounting? DP: No, I’ll never get tired of drumming. I love it. LG: At what age did you decide this? DP: Fourteen months old. LG: Fourteen months! At 14 months, I couldn’t even speak, guy. DP: [Laughs]

LG: I saw this clip of you with a dummy in your mouth playing the drums. They speak to your father, and he thought it was an adult playing, but found out it was you. Do you know when you first picked up music and were able to coordinate the drums? DP: Well, it’s natural for me. Plus my dad grew up playing the drums. LG: Is it too easy for you to play drums? DP: Yes, it really is. LG: When did it become easy? DP: When I was three years old. LG: So you just picked up the sticks and waved them around, and then you were kicking things, and you thought, ‘Hey, this is easy.’ DP: Ja, that’s about right. I just started playing around with the drums until I realised that I’d actually been keeping the beat.

LG: So you’ve travelled a lot. What was your best gig? DP: I played with Michael Jackson’s drummer in Los Angeles. LG: Wow. That’s very fancy. Do you know Questlove? DP: Never heard of him. LG: You’ve never heard of Questlove! Okay cool, when this interview is over you have go to Google Questlove. He’s a drummer – he plays for a band called The Roots. DP: Okay, I’ll check them out. LG: He’s a very good drummer. Now let me give you a scenario: You’re playing and one of your sticks breaks. What do you do? DP: I play with one hand. LG: Have you done it before? DP: Yeah, it’s pretty hard but you get the hang of it.
LG: Yeah, because I saw your video with you playing one hand, showing off again. Now what if your other stick breaks? A-ha! DP: Play with my feet. LG: [Laughs] What if a shark comes out of nowhere and eats your feet? DP: Play with my arms! LG: Okay, okay, what if a tiger appears and bites off your arms? Then what you gonna do? DP: [Laughs] Play with my legs! LG: Then if all else fails, you’ll just play the recorder. DP: [Laughs] No, then I’ll just play with my head! LG: [Laughs] What if, what if … okay, I’m being ridiculous. I think at that point we should probably stop the concert and be concerned about your health. How many hours do you practise per day?

LG: You can do whatever you want after church. DP: Yeah. LG: Cool. Who’s hiding behind the computer? I see you keep looking away. DP: It’s my dad. LG: Can I say hi? Daniel Petersen senior: Hey Loyiso. LG: Good day sir! You must be very proud of your son. DPsr: I am. It’s hard work still, but I’m very glad that it’s keeping my butt on the ground. LG: [Laughs] Do you think it’s mostly your influence? Do you think without you that he wouldn’t play drums? DPsr: I think my part is more making the room accessible for Daniel. He crawled to the drums and played without me.

My drum kit was always set up in the entertainment room. If there were no drums, perhaps he might’ve just played on his knees. But because my kit was available and I allowed him to play on it, he just got better and better, until I bought him his own. LG: Cool. Well thank you very much, and thank you for Daniel! DPsr: No problem. You know he’s going to Los Angeles soon? Daniel was asked to play on the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital fundraising album. LG: Really? DPsr: They’re recording the single first in April. It’s ‘One Love’, by Bob Marley. His son, Ziggy, is leading it with some top acts. We’ll tell you later who these cats are, but it’s serious. And thereafter, we’ll spend another couple of months in LA recording the album. LG: Wow. That’s very cool. I wish you all the best. I think I’m gonna be in LA in May, so maybe I’ll come hang out. Good luck Daniel, we’re rooting for you! DPsr: Thank you. DP: Bye bye!

BEING POLITICALLY JADED is a hobbyhorse of many people, and that’s understandable – questionable service delivery, cronyism, corruption and a general indifference to the common man are some of the sad hallmarks of far too many politicians (except in the few months running up to elections, when many babies are kissed and pensioners are visited). South Africa is no exception, and it could be argued that some of our politicians have taken run-of-the-mill corruption and elevated it to an art form. Add to this the infighting, floorcrossing, alliances between parties being announced and broken in less time than it takes to digest a hamburger, and it’s pretty easy for the average man in

the street to begin to feel as if voting is unnecessary or meaningless. But despite all this, South Africa does actually have a strong democracy, and we can all play a part in keeping our leaders accountable. Nothing demonstrates this better than our elections, which really are free and fair, and which allow just about anyone to run for president on whatever platform they see fit. And if you don’t want to vote because you feel that no party or candidate represents you, there’s always the chance to ‘be the change you want to see’. Hey, if the Dagga Party can get around to doing it, there’s no reason why you can’t.
Voter education Some of the touchiness surrounding people’s attitudes to voting boils down to education; if we all knew better what position each candidate represented and what our votes counted for in a real sense, perhaps more people would make that cross. Voter education is something that counters ignorance and apathy; the former is regrettable, but the latter is inexcusable. There are, of course, those who abstain from voting because they disagree with the voting process or democracy as a form of governance, but that is a discussion for a whole different article. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) goes to great lengths to educate voters about everything from the mechanics of the voting process to why voting is important, and the responsibility each person has when they enter the voting booth. When you think about how vast our country is, how widespread our communities, and how many people will be voting in these elections (particularly the so-called ‘born-frees’, who will be

voting for the first time), the scope of voter education comes into sharp perspective. At the business end of the IEC’s voter education efforts are Gugu Memela and Pamela Sanqela, two motivated and inspiring women who are passionate about getting out there and ensuring that as many South Africans as possible know their rights and can mark their ballots with confidence.
‘Your vote counts’ Gugu Memela is a senior outreach and training officer based at the IEC’s Pietermaritzburg office. Her responsibilities are intense: coordinating the recruitment of electoral staff; managing the implementation of democracy education and electoral training plans; monitoring and evaluating outreach and training programmes; and coordinating civic and votereducation initiatives. Gugu describes her job with this delightful homespun analogy: ‘Like a three-legged pot, for a successful election to take place there should be an elector (voter), one to be elected (party or councillor), and one who conducts the election (the IEC). My job is to establish and maintain relationships with the other two legs for the pot to stand. ‘The common question I’m always asked is: “Why should I vote?” This one comes from all age groups and races. My job is to explain what voting means in general, and what it means to them. ‘First and foremost, when you vote you are exercising your democratic right. Voting is making a choice – electing a group of people or someone who can make sound decisions on your behalf. You’re actually giving someone authority to make decisions for you,’ explains Gugu.

VOTER EDUCATION | LOCAL HERO
PAMELA SANQELA ‘If citizens don’t vote in elections, it is impossible to formulate a democratic government that represents anyone.’
The electorate must be willing to monitor their municipality and its practices ‘If you’re not happy with whom you chose last time you voted, you have the right to change your choice. If you are happy with your previous choice, vote again, because other people might not agree, and by not making your choice, your vote – just that one vote – is lost. So you are making that mark to make a change. Explaining such things until the people I speak with have no more questions brings me so much satisfaction. As long as there is still a “why”, I do not stop.’ She adds: ‘We at the IEC are working tirelessly as we prepare for the national and provincial elections, which must be delivered and managed freely and fairly. I urge everyone to make his or her voice heard by casting that vote. I know you are probably saying, “Ag, I’m tired of politics.” But do you realise that we are surrounded by politics that cannot be avoided? There are politics in the family, in church, at work, in your club, at school. Politics are nothing but the use or abuse of power. So if you do not worry about how other people use or abuse power, the status quo will remain. Your vote counts!’

Local Hero 27.indd 73
Follow up on your vote Pamela Sanqela is the assistant manager for outreach and communications in the Eastern Cape, and has worked for the IEC since 2000. She has the challenging task of overseeing the implementation, monitoring, evaluation, coordination and reporting of all of the provincial programmes and projects approved by the Provincial Electoral Officer. Basically, Pamela makes sure that programmes and workshops are held in as many communities as possible, and that voter-education material is distributed to all constituents. But this is no simple task. ‘Community protests due to service-delivery disputes in some areas of the Eastern Cape have resulted in them becoming no-go areas,’ she explains. ‘Some electorates also argue that they’ve voted in all elections, but the municipalities are failing to deliver services. Poverty, crime and the unemployment rate are increasing, so they decide not to vote.’ Pamela makes it clear that a voter’s responsibility does not end in the

voting booth. ‘The participation of citizens during and after voting is so important. It ensures that everyone’s interests are advanced and that leaders don’t abuse their power. Participation also brings different needs, concerns and views into the process, telling the government what you want as voters. If citizens don’t vote in elections, it’s impossible to formulate a democratic government that represents anyone. ‘A voter must be actively involved in decision-making; when citizens only vote and do not follow up on their votes by ensuring the government follows up on its promises, democracy can fall victim to corruption or malpractice. The electorate must be willing to monitor their municipality and its practices.’

20 years of democracy
The 2009 elections by numbers To put the 2014 national elections into perspective, here’s a brief roundup of what happened the last time the nation turned out to vote. The numbers are enough to give one an instant migraine. • There were 17 919 966 valid votes cast at 19 726 voting stations around the country. A total of 201 276 volunteers were recruited for the voting day itself. • There were 239 237 invalid/spoilt votes. That is a considerable number – 1.3% of the total votes cast. When you vote, don’t be one of those voters who mucks it up (unless you’re making a statement). Either way, make your vote count. • A staggering 41% of eligible voters either didn’t register to vote, or registered but didn’t end up voting.
kulula.com
Local Hero 27.indd 75
South Africa has come a long way since 1994. Basic human rights are more entrenched, and substantial societal transformation and policy implementation have taken place. But it would be naïve to suggest that South Africa doesn’t face enormous problems – poverty, crime, poor education and a lack of basic services are issues faced by the vast majority of our people. Voting for a government that we believe will address these issues and others is just the first step on a long journey. These problems cannot be fixed overnight; it requires both political will and the will of the voters to keep pushing for solutions, and not to fall into apathy or fatalism. Here’s what you can do: • Unless you have an objection to the process, the first thing to do is to actually vote in these elections. First find out which party best represents your interests, and then show up on the day. • Complain. While (middle-class) South Africans are very good at complaining when Woolies has run out of their favourite brand of skim milk, when it comes to complaining about service delivery or corruption, they are surprisingly mum on the forums where they can make their voices heard. Whinging on Facebook, unfortunately, doesn’t really count. • Get to know your local ward councillor. Find out who they are, get his or her number and tell them when something needs to change. • Go to community policing forums or civic meetings held in your area. Share crime-related and other information with your neighbours, your local police and government representatives. By pulling together, it’s amazing what just one group of community members can do. • Pay your taxes. This one hurts, especially when we read about wasteful expenditure, tenderpreneurs and a certain housing compound in northern KZN. Nevertheless, our taxes do make a difference, particularly in terms of providing basic services for those who don’t have them. Give some thought to our poorest citizens the next time you don’t issue a receipt, or claim something as an expense that you shouldn’t. And if you’re bitter about the government’s wasteful expenditure, see the points above about making your voice heard. Collectively, we have a long journey ahead of us. Taking the first step is easy. Keeping on keeping on? That’s the kicker. For more information about voting and the elections, visit the IEC’s website: www.elections.org.za.

Thami Prusent has showered on international TV, studied Mandarin, and runs his own clothing label. A transcontinental trip – without a cent in his pocket – seemed like the next logical adventure, as Trevor Crighton discovers. THAMI PRUSENT HAS an odd sense of fun. The adventurous entrepreneur entered Big Brother Africa in 2008, and managed a whirlwind romance in front of the cameras – and the whole continent. He emerged after 77 days and started seeking a new adventure. After three years of plotting, he decided to travel from Cape Town to Cairo – without a cent in his pocket. His book, Cape to Cairo for Free: An African’s Penniless Misadventure Through Africa, chronicles his misadventures. Both Thami’s big moves have been governed by international events. He entered Big Brother Africa largely in response to the xenophobic attacks that

rocked South Africa during 2008. ‘The continent’s biggest TV show seemed like the appropriate stage to rebuke emphatically the lunacy displayed by some of my countrymen,’ he says. Then, in the process of founding an eco-conscious clothing label, Sili Rabbit, Thami heard about the crisis in Somalia, where 29 000 children under the age of five died of starvation in the three months leading up to August. And so the Cape to Cairo for Free concept was born: he would traverse the continent without a cent on him, to raise awareness and funds to support feeding schemes in Somalia, and other worthy continental causes.
YOU SPHINX, YOU Thami keeps it classy in Egypt.
‘I believe that trying to make a difference doesn’t always have to be a dreary affair,’ says Thami. ‘Some positive extremism is needed to better engage indifferent youth.’

The profile afforded him by his presence on the continent’s most-watched reality TV show came in handy when trying to secure interviews and complementary visas, but carried very little weight when he was stranded among ordinary people in places like Bujumbura and rural Ethiopia. ‘More consequential than the profile is the continental network of lifelong friends I made on the show,’ he explains. ‘Without them I’d still be wondering around the Karoo trying to get to Cairo.’
KIDS WILL BE KIDS Child refugees from Somalia playing in a rainwater pool in in Dadaab, Kenya. THIRSTY? The Sahara Desert stretching through the Sudan.
KEEP ON TRUCKING Riding on top of a truck-cumtaxi outside Marsabit, Kenya.
Free to ride A free bus trip to Cape Town kicked off the journey, with stops in Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan before Thami reached Egypt – after a challenging and eye-opening four months. ‘The trip from Nairobi to Addis Ababa was undoubtedly the most difficult,’ he explains. ‘I ran out of money in Isiolo with 1 111km to go. So I hitched a ride on a Kenyan army truck, slept outside a shop, rode on top of a truck-cum-taxi, spent another night under the stars, survived extortion by an immigration official, pawned my external hard-drive and spent a night in a brothel. ‘My scariest experience, however, was at Dadaab – the world’s largest refugee camp. Some foreigners had recently been kidnapped, and I spent the entire night in my tin-shack hotel room waiting for armed men to storm in.’ It wasn’t all extortion and rough sleeping, though. Thami’s passion for the situation in Somalia was mirrored by scores of people he met on his journey. ‘Namibia had a “Hope for Somalia” SMS campaign, there was a convoy of trucks filled with maize from Zambia, the Rwanda Youth Campaign for Somalia

organised concerts, and the Kenyan SMS campaign became the most successful of its kind in the world,’ he says. He met both amazing and scary people along the way, strangers who showed him kindness and shared their meagre means to support him. Having made it to his destination, he was forced to consider whether or not he’d achieved his aim. ‘Not by a long shot,’ is his response. ‘I’m afraid that quests like mine are the equivalent of putting lipstick on a bulldog. We African youth need to come together in a concerted effort that focuses on both climatic and conflict early-warning systems. A proactive singular youth NGO that is present in all AU states would perhaps be a step in the right direction’.
Continental drifter Referring to the ‘misadventure’ in his book’s title, Prusent says that an adventure signifies some level of heroism.
‘My trip was anything but. It was more like fumbling about the continent and continually being rescued by friends, family and total strangers’. Did he make a difference? ‘A small one, but a difference, nonetheless’. Thami is no stranger to continental travel – his first trip was undertaken when he was 12, and by his mid-teens he’d seen a significant portion of the SADC region. ‘This was my chance to indisputably prove what I have known for most of my life: that Africans are the most generous beings you will ever come across,’ he says. ‘Our hearts are as warm as the sun that shines on our backs’. Having seen more of the continent, he’s keen to clear up misconceptions about Africa that the rest of the world clings to blindly. ‘Foreigners’ funniest misconception is that Africa is one country,’ he says, ‘but I think that they are actually on to something there.

are privileged to be alive during this era,’ he says. ‘The potential of South African youth is limitless; we have no choice but to harness it or we might end up with an African Spring on our hands’. On the other hand, he says he did learn how emotionally disconnected South Africa is from the rest of the continent.
Finding heroes
YOU PARKED IT WHERE? Thami stops to help an overturned truck near Ethiopia.
SPRING IS SPRUNG View of the Arab Spring in Egypt from a hotel room on Talaat Harb Square in Cairo.
There is no conceivable reason why Africa should not be united as a federated state. Our shared history and cultures – including the similarities of the Bantu languages – make a compelling case for shared sovereignty. On the other hand, in Neru, we had a herd of elephants leisurely walk across the national road, supporting the other widely-held misconception that wild animals roam the streets!’
Travelling truths Over the course of tens of thousands of kilometers and 120 days, he must have learned a few home truths, surely? ‘Definitely. There is so much we can learn
kulula.com
Local Hero 27 1.indd 81
from the continent,’ he says. ‘For example, there is the comparison between Rwanda’s Gacaca courts and our own Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Rwanda’s courts were localised and processed over a million genocide cases, with a focus on restorative – as opposed to punitive – justice. There is a feeling among some that our TRC was fast-tracked, and that political expediency supplanted the painful process of picking at the scabs of truth, which is essential to true reconciliation.’ On a personal level, Thami went into the trip thinking he could save Africa, but came back having been saved by Africa. ‘Africa is on the dawn of greatness and we
Since returning from the trip and penning the book, he has launched an NGO called Mobile Giver that advocates for zerorated SMS donations in South Africa. ‘Many people are put off by the most efficient means of donating because fees charged by mobile operators and service providers are excessive,’ he says. ‘Relaxation of these fees would play a fundamental role in turning disaffected people into proactive givers. Linked to Sili Rabbit, it gives the label deeper roots than do random events that occur sporadically’. Thami says his trip didn’t make him a hero – but he does get to hang around some, from time to time. ‘I met incredible people all over the continent, in the most obscure places. The key trait of any hero is consistency. Although we deliver “Rescued Food” once a week to Malerato’s Centre for Hope in Mamelodi through Mobile Giver, we’re not in the same league as the courageous ladies who look after those orphans every single day’. Finally, would he do it all again? ‘Giving away monetary power and laying myself at the feet of strangers was the most humbling experience of my life. I would need a very good reason to go through that emotional rollercoaster again,’ he says. ‘On the other hand, nobody “does” West Africa – I wouldn’t mind doing a cheapskate safari through there…’

SOME PEOPLE THINK that moving on means forgetting the past, but those who do so are doomed to repeat it. People, after all, tend to have short memories. We repeatedly get sunburnt, despite owning sunscreen. We stay up too late watching Keeping up with the Kardashians and can’t function at work the next day, despite having done the same thing two days before. It’s part of human nature to repeat the mistakes of the past. Frivolity aside, our country’s heritage sites are important markers that show us what we’re collectively capable of and, thankfully, how far we’ve come. The better we understand this, the better we can safeguard the future for all. And this knowledge isn’t just for locals – when you consider how many international visitors include our heritage sites in their itineraries, it shows how valuable the lessons are that have been learnt here, and how relevant they are to people everywhere. With that in mind, let’s take a little tour of these fascinating and important sites right in our own backyard.

Apartheid Museum The Apartheid Museum comes about as close as a place can to capturing the harrowing reality of the apartheid system. Charting the rise and fall of this notorious system of racial discrimination in vivid detail, the museum takes visitors on an emotional journey that uses architecture, film, photos, text and artefacts to capture the essence of those dark days. Visitors are given an entry card identifying them as ‘white’ or ‘nonwhite’, and move through a series of 22 sobering exhibits that follow South

THE TRUTH IN BLACK AND WHITE The Apartheid Museum gives visitors a harrowing glimpse into the past.

Constitution Hill If any place illustrates South Africa’s staggering turnaround from oppression to democracy, it’s Constitution Hill, home of the Constitutional Court – the highest court in the country. Before Constitution Hill opened in 2004, the precinct was home to one of the most feared places in the country: the Old Fort prison complex.
THE YEAR THAT CHANGED IT ALL There’s no forgetting the date of the Liliesleaf Farm arrests.
A high-security prison built in the 1890s, the Old Fort became notorious for being the prison where the apartheid regime jailed striking miners and political dissidents such as Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Ghandi and Robert Sobukwe. Exhibitions and guided tours include visits to three prison museums – Number Four, the Old Fort and the Women’s Gaol – as well as the Constitutional Court itself, where one can experience a real court case from the visitors’ decks. 1 Kotze St, Jo’burg, 011 381 3100, www.constitutionhill.org.za; open Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm; weekends and public holidays, 10am-3pm

DOING TIME WITH LIME Hard labour in Robben Island’s limestone quarry left Nelson Mandela with lifelong eye problems.
WHAT A WELCOME The Robben Island gate is as innocuous as its history is dark.
Liliesleaf Farm The events that followed a police raid on Liliesleaf Farm on 11 July 1963 were some of the most significant in the liberation struggle. For two years, Liliesleaf served as a revolutionary nerve centre of sorts, a hideout and meeting place for ANC and SA Communist Party leaders. However, that fateful police raid saw the arrest of 18 people and led to the Rivonia Trial, resulting in the sentencing and incarceration of key struggle leaders, including Nelson Mandela, Denis Goldberg, Ahmed Kathrada, Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu. Although the trial dealt a hammer blow to the struggle movement, it attracted international attention and spurred others on to join the fight against apartheid. Now a national heritage site, Liliesleaf provides a fascinating glimpse of the struggle, and offers self-, guided and educational tours.

Robben Island It’s strange to think that a tiny, windswept island could play such a huge role in our country’s history. Used as a place of exile for nearly 400 years, Robben Island has a dark history, and
is best known for its incarnation as a maximum-security prison between 1961 and 1991. It’s here that many of South Africa’s prominent freedom fighters were held, most notably Nelson Mandela, who spent 18 of the 27 years he was incarcerated imprisoned on the island. Today the tranquillity of the place belies how brutal life once was there, with prisoners subjected to hard labour in the lime quarry, beatings, prolonged solitary confinement, and insufficient food and clothing. Now it is essentially a

vast museum, and tours include a visit to the infamous prison, interaction with an ex-political prisoner, a 45-minute bus ride with a guide, and the opportunity to explore the Murray’s Bay Harbour precinct on foot. 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za. Standard tour to Robben Island is 3.5 hours long, including ferry rides. Ferries depart at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town.
Nelson Mandela Capture Site The new kid on the block of liberation sites, as it were, the Nelson Mandela Capture Site marks the place where, on 5 August 1962, Nelson Mandela was captured by the police after being on the run for 17 months. It was the last time he would be a free man for 27 years. Until 2012, the Capture Site was nothing more than a plaque on a small brick structure, but in 2012, on the 50th anniversary of Mandela’s
The sculpture at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site is bound to become one of the most iconic pieces of art related to the liberation struggle capture, a museum and sculpture were unveiled to recognise the significance of this event. heights that, when viewed from a specific angle, merge to form an image of Mandela’s face. The museum tells the story of Mandela’s life, his struggle against apartheid and his rich legacy. R103 between Howick and Lions River, www.thecapturesite.co.za; open Mon-Sun, 9am-4pm
Looking back further into the past
South Africa’s history didn’t begin with the declaration of independence from Britain or the apartheid years, and it’s worth looking a little further back to develop a richer understanding of our country. Monuments and museums commemorating the Great Trek, the birth of the Zulu Kingdom, the Anglo-Zulu War (1879), and the Anglo-Boer wars (1880-1881 and 1899-1902) practically litter the countryside, and tell fascinating and sad stories of the people and battles that shaped our country and informed where it was headed. Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, the Talana Museum in Dundee and the Anglo-Boer War Museum & Women’s Memorial in Bloemfontein are all worth a visit. Going back even further, South Africa has many rich repositories of San rock art, with thousands of rock paintings and engravings found on cave walls or open-air rocks from Ceres in the Western Cape to the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal. Collections of rock art can also be found in a number of museums around the country. The better we understand South Africa’s rich heritage and the price that has been paid to make the country what it is today, the more fully we can move forward together towards a future that incorporates all people and all cultures as equals. And that’s something worth travelling for.

If you feel like spoiling yourself, try the tea with cream scones or crumpets at the tea garden – the recipe hasn’t changed since the 80s (and that’s a good thing). 5 BEST FREE THINGS TO DO IN
JOBURG
LOCAL AND LEKKER Local arts and crafts, like these cuties from the Finders Keepers Market, are a great way to support a community, and a far better gift than anything from a mall.
1. Browse a market
FIRE IN YOUR BELLY The local cuisine at the Victoria Street Market is sure to get your tastebuds firing.
À LA MOAD The Museum of African Design is open to the public for free on Thursdays.
4. Meander through the Midlands The Midlands Meander is exactly what it says it is – a meander through the Midlands. From the Valley of 1 000 Hills through the seemingly endless rolling green fields, you’ll find countless fascinating little spots to stop and visit local craftsmen, galleries and cafés – all without any obligation to buy. Find out more at www.midlandsmeander.co.za.
3. Grab a taste of India
5. Get cultural at the Durban Art Gallery
Durban is the city with the largest Indian population outside India, so experiencing a taste of Indian culture (and food) is a must. The Victoria Street Market, in the heart of the city, is a giant pink palace of a market, with 170 stalls selling everything from curios to woven baskets, ceramics, beaded jewellery and spices such as you’ve never seen before. The whole place is scented with incense, and you have to stop for a curry at one of the many local restaurants as you come out of the market. Find out more at www.indianmarket.co.za.
This is worth popping into if only for the building, which is grand and majestic and sits in the centre of town like an old forgotten queen. The art gallery itself has a constantly evolving collection of contemporary and classic art, while the lower levels are devoted to the Natural Science Museum and the public library. It’s a wonderful spot to escape from the fierce Durban sun and get a dose of culture, history and science all in one. Just be sure to give yourself a couple of hours to take in all the many sights.

CHOW, BELLA No trip to Durbs would be complete without sampling a bunny chow.
Feel like wandering around just looking at beautiful things? There are more than enough markets to choose from – our particular favourites are the Finders Keepers Market in Rosebank, with more than 600 stalls of antiques and collectables; the Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein, filled with delicious and beautiful handmade goodies; and the Market on Main design market every Sunday in Maboneng. Find out more at www.finderskeepersmarket.co.za, www.neighbourgoodsmarket.co.za and www.marketonmain.co.za.
2. Park off in a park Jo’burg isn’t known as SA’s greenest city for nothing. From Delta Park and Zoo Lake in the city to Emmarentia Dam a short drive out of it, there are more than enough green spaces to satisfy anyone looking for a dose of (free) nature.
3. Visit the Museum of African Design MOAD, the Museum of African Design, is Africa’s first museum dedicated to design – and they offer free entry on Thursdays. As well as the exhibitions, outreach and partnerships (local and global) they focus on, they have late-opening Thursdays with handmade cocktails, live music, openings, lectures and haircuts(!) on offer. Go hiking in Wilderness Among hiking enthusiasts, Wilderness is best known as the end of the gruelling five-day Otter Trail, but you don’t have to do the Otter to enjoy the extraordinary natural beauty around this coastal town. Whether you choose to do part of the last day’s Otter Trail hike (and high-five the exhausted hikers coming the other way) or one of the shorter walks into the mountains, you’ll have more than enough nature trails to choose from. THE GREAT ESCAPE | TRAVEL
So, here we are, poised at the junction of Turn Back and Follow Your Heart, and we look at each other like old dogs planning our escape into the unknown. Hell, we both think, let’s live dangerously, and I witness a glint of mad rebellion in her eyes as I push my toes into the accelerator and point our motorised chariot in the wrong direction. She leans over defiantly to stab the hooter in a series of sustained auditory exclamations, stopping locals in their tracks as they turn their heads. ‘So long, and thanks for all the ostrich steaks,’ I shout through the window to one onlooker, then crank up the radio, letting Led Zeppelin spill out onto Oudtshoorn’s main street. After a week of cultural intoxication during the town’s annual arts jamboree, we’re ready for cut-loose, easy-going adventure, schedule-free exploration without maps or guidebooks, and definitely no GPS. Our luddite tendencies include abhorrence for that nagging voice telling us to prepare to turn.

Look to the east for my sign I aim eastwards, drifting past blink-andyou-miss-it Dysselsdorp, and then pull over in one-horse De Rust to see what’s cooking at the Village Trading Post, a café designed like a bohemian museum, with vintage collectibles and an art garden in the back. Everything’s for sale, including our table, which we use instead to feast upon the fattest omelettes we’ve ever seen. Longwinded conversation with the owners lands us at their guesthouse, Riverside Accommodation, which is as filled with character as the restaurant. Our room opens on to the pool, with lush views of the surrounding mountains.

STOEP THERE! Karoo chic is the defining style in unpretentious Prince Albert.
SADDLE UP The best way to see Prince Albert.
LIKE AN OIL PAINTING This arid region may be parched in places, but its colours remain vivid.
To slice through the Swartberg mountains dividing the Klein from the Groot Karoo, we head through Meiringspoort Pass, a monstrous natural ravine created during prehistoric times when the swamp that once filled the Great Karoo broke through, leaving soaring cliffs and spectacular rock formations in its wake. Beyond this gigantic scar in the landscape, the road back west passes Klaarstroom, a blip of a village where little has changed in a century, and then we’re zipping past wine estates in the shadow of the Swartberg mountains.
African Relish (www.africanrelish.com), booked a ghost tour with raconteur Ailsa Tudhope (www.storyweaver.co.za), and planned a night of stargazing with a local couple obsessed with celestial bodies (www.astrotours.co.za). But first we drive 25km out of town, along a dirt road that rips through a sublime valley, arriving at Weltevrede – an off-the-grid fig farm where we rest up in a pretty cottage with a gas-powered kitchen. We have immediate access to incredible walks through a fynbos Garden of Eden, and during a tour of the orchards we eat ripe figs straight from the trees.

IT’S NOT INSIDE, IT’S ON… We knew for sure when we’d summited the Swartberg Pass.
Much of the Klein Karoo is marked by the batting eyelids of ostriches, checking us out as we navigate twisting backroads 10km of zigzags, serpentine twists, and steep gradients on a narrow dirt road with nothing between us and the abyss but my grip on the wheel. It’s easy to see why Thomas Bain’s masterful 27km of engineering is considered among the world’s great mountain passes. Spat out on the other side of the pass, back in the Klein Karoo, we head back towards Oudtshoorn, but veer off to follow the back road leading to Calitzdorp. We land up in Kruisrivier, a blessedly undeveloped countryside crossroads marked by the batting eyelids of ostriches staring at us from one field and cows moo-whispering from another. A sign for overnight accommodation lures us down a jungly, overgrown driveway and we arrive at Tinie Bekker’s

farmhouse, Boesmanskop. One look at the vast upstairs bedroom is enough to convince us to stay, so we jump in the pool and explore the farm, grateful that there’s precious little to do. After dinner, we sit deep into the night chewing the fat with Tinie, and in the morning follow him around as he checks his dairy cows, oversees tobacco-hanging, and tends to his ostrich chicks: real, hands-on farming.
Down to the last dorp The bumpy track to Calitzdorp wends through the fynbos-covered Groenfontein Valley, where in places we feel like the last people on earth. We slip down one of Calitzdorp’s side streets (the main road being alarmingly tatty) and find Die Handelshuis, done out like the Karoo
version of a roadside diner with nostalgic kitsch – there’s even an attached beauty salon and gallery of contemporary art. Around the corner, we find Karoo Life, a miniscule B&B in autumnal colours. It’s walking distance from six different wine cellars, so we get busy. Later, bolstered by a series of porttastings (Calitzdorp is famous for the stuff), we stumble to the nightly classics recital in the sandstone Dutch Reformed Church – the organ is rated the best in the country and the performance is electrifying.
Over hill and dale Just beyond Ladismith, where we rummage through bits and bobs at Gert’s Junk Stall, we take the unmarked

turnoff leading to Wolverfontein, a farm established in 1890 on the banks of the Touws River. There’s a cottage seemingly waiting for us, decked out with tonguein-cheek, Karoo-inspired décor and set amid aloes, windmills, and genuine outback isolation. Deep into the night, we laze around staring up at a star-painted sky, and fall asleep to a soundtrack of penetrating silence. Barrydale is another offbeat town tucked into a narrow valley beneath the Langeberg Mountains. We stop for a minor feast at reputable Clarke of the Karoo (www.clarkeofthekaroo.co.za),

where Mike Clarke serves up Karoo lamb curry, Karoo lamb burgers, and even Karoo oysters. We walk off lunch browsing nearby galleries, and follow a trail through the orchards and farmlands for a hike in the foothills. After Barrydale, we hang a left, traversing the Tradouw Pass to the tiny mission station of Suurbraak, landing on the N2 towards Swellendam. With its long main road, Swellendam feels like a metropolis after the R62’s Karoo dorpies. Technically the third-oldest town in the country, it remains quaintly unencumbered. We taste liqueurs at
Wildebraam (www.wildebraam.co.za), a berry farm where 80% of the world’s youngberries are grown, and get pampered at Rain Spa (www.rainafrica.com). Later, we check in at Augusta De Mist, a 200-year-old country house with perkily remodelled interiors and a dense African garden, and indulge in delicious Italian fare at La Sosta (www.lasostarestaurant.com), owned by expats from Milan. After breakfast the next day, we borrow bikes to explore Bontebok National Park, South Africa’s smallest reserve, where we spot rare chocolate- and cream-coloured antelope amid coastal Renosterveld fynbos.
From the beat to retreat Wide-open skies and rolling canolaspattered farmlands follow us all the way to Caledon, where we pause only briefly for supplies. Craving action, we descend on the annual Easter Vortex trance party, this year some 15km outside Caledon. We set up camp and get busy dancing, surrounded by magnificent scenery and humanity at its most unhinged. Loud, high-tempo beats and a vibrant crowd provide rich contrast to the last few days of quiet reflection, but it’s an uplifting kind of energy. We relentlessly pound the dust,

would do well to film an episode of Pimp My Ride here. Bikes and their riders are wrapped up in fairy lights; there are cyclists dressed in everything from lycra to onesies and jumpsuits; one bloke has mounted a speaker on the frame of his bike, issuing a thumping bass accompaniment to the ride; and there are even the cycling equivalent of chopper motorbikes – low-slung beasts with raised handlebars and colourful decals. Tricksters on BMXs zip through the crowd, pulling tricks and popping wheelies. Skateboarders form chains towed by friends on bicycles. It’s organised chaos – beautiful, vibrant and cosmopolitan.
People power The idea is pretty simple: every full moon at 9pm, several hundred folk on all manner of human-powered transport gather under the Green Point circle (the Grand Parade route was introduced to accommodate an event at the stadium) to ride a gentle 12km route past the stadium, along Beach Road past the lighthouse, up onto Green Point Main Road and on to Riebeek Street, regrouping in Long Street, up and around onto Loop Street, then down Longmarket into Greenmarket Square for drinks, merriment … and free cupcakes, if you’re lucky.

‘No, not midnight mass. Moonlight Mass. You know, hundreds of people riding around the city on bicycles?’ I’m amazed that some people still haven’t heard about the monthly pedal-powered event that’s grabbed Cape Town by the handlebars. Later that evening, I glide my old steel-frame Avalanche Reflex to the Grand Parade to join six of my mates – and more than 1 000 strangers – on a balmy evening cycle through the city centre under a glorious full moon. #moonlightmass (as the event is officially named) is much less solemn than the name might suggest. The atmosphere is carnivalesque – Xzibit

MOONLIGHT MASS | BEHIND THE SCENES
When you look at night-time in an urban environment, occupied streets are safe streets
But this isn’t an event aimed at the shaven-legged, lycra-loving cycling fraternity; it’s for anyone who likes riding a bicycle. It’s not exclusively for bicycles either, to which dozens of roller-skaters and skateboarders will attest. Basically, if it’s human-powered, it’s welcome.
From a tweet to the street What started out as a social experiment on Twitter has mushroomed into something bigger – much bigger – than co-founders Daniel Graham and Elad Kirshenbaum could ever have anticipated, as they explain to me over coffee on a blustery afternoon

in Woodstock. One evening in 2012, the two friends and cycling enthusiasts were sitting at the Newport Deli when Daniel casually suggested how much fun it would be to ride along the Promenade at full moon. The lads took to Twitter to gauge support for the idea, then pitched up under the circle and waited to see how their idea had been received. ‘We stumbled upon the idea, really,’ explains Elad. ‘We didn’t sit around a table and say, “Let’s create the biggest social ride in Africa.” We just wanted to ride our bikes in a safe environment with friends. We thought we’d be chuffed if we got 20 people. We were chuffed that we had

Critical Mass is a cycling event held on the last Friday of every month, which originated in San Francisco in 1992 and is now held in more than 300 cities around the world. Pedal pundits can get massive in Jo’burg and Durban – go to www.criticalmass.co.za for more info.
anyone, in fact.’ About 35 people pitched up that first night, then 80 the following full moon, then 160, 250, 300, 500… ‘Then Puma gave us a bike to give away,’ says Daniel, ‘which probably jumped us up to about 1 500. Since then we’ve pretty much been solid on those numbers – except for one rainy ride when it went back to 20. It was an absolute disaster. We had probably five police vehicles, etcetera, and about 25 people pitched.’ Daniel and Elad see #moonlightmass as belonging to the community, not to them. ‘If we stop the website tomorrow, if we cancel our Twitter feed, do you think it will stop?’ asks Elad. ‘We don’t determine the cycles of the moon. Come the next full moon, there will still be more than 1 000 people there ready to cycle, regardless of what we do.’
kulula.com
Behind The Scenes 27-2.indd 109
Riding through red tape Nevertheless, they’re still the ones in the firing line when it comes to rules, regulations and red tape. ‘We got threatened with arrest pretty early on when #moonlightmass started to become more popular,’ says Daniel. ‘After we gave the bike away, we were summoned to the event office by councillor Beverley Schafer to explain what was going on,’ says Elad. ‘The reality, though, was that Beverley loved what we were doing. At the end of the day, without her help, the city would’ve shut the mass down on the fifth ride. ‘The event office was not interested. They told us to apply for a permit and do it properly, which would’ve involved water points, recycling plans, waste management – basically everything that something like the Argus would entail.’
‘If you wake up in the morning and drive alongside everybody else to work, it’s a commute. But if you cycle with 14 or more people, it’s considered an illegal gathering.’ Thankfully, though, Beverley was adamant that #moonlightmass was a community-driven event. ‘She’s done everything in her power to ensure it carried on,’ says Daniel. ‘We have the full support of the policymakers, but it’s a monthly fight with the bureaucracy.’ At the moment, the only way for Elad and Daniel to scythe through the red tape seems to involve setting up an NGO. ‘It’s not a quick fix,’ explains Daniel, ‘but we’re looking at a long-term solution that will allow us to continue #moonlightmass safely and uninhibited by bureaucracy, while maintaining the ethos of the event – free, fun and social.’
Occupying the streets Setting up an NGO will enable Daniel and Elad to apply to the city budget for funding to pay for the additional traffic police and running costs. ‘At the end of the day, the real beneficiary of #moonlightmass is the City of Cape Town,’ says Elad. ‘When you look at night-time in an urban environment, occupied streets are safe streets. More than anything else, I think this is our motto. We’re basically trying to activate the city, at a very specific time of the month, under this philosophy.’

‘For the World Cup, they built this amazing circle with an urban park, but how many times a year is it activated?’ asks Daniel. ‘Unless there’s an event at the stadium, that’s dead space.’ Elad reckons the city should encourage many more events like this. ‘Even if you’re not on a bicycle, the urban environment is safer because there are so many people occupying those streets. They should encourage street occupation 365 nights a year.’
Branded for life Daniel and Elad are keen to avoid attaching the event to a particular brand, seeing that as a compromise to the values behind it. Go to the #moonlightmass website, however, and you’ll see a list of more than 15 businesses with which they’ve partnered, which offer

benefits to people who participate in #moonlightmass or commute by bicycle. ‘We want to challenge the concept of what an event is and what branding is in an event environment,’ says Elad. One prime example is the partnership with Virgin Active to bring cyclists in from Fish Hoek for free. ‘Virgin Active asked for permission to use #moonlightmass in an advert, and we said yes, on condition they gave back to the community,’ explains Daniel. ‘They asked us for recommendations, so we suggested they hire the tourist train to bring in cyclists along that line. They made a commitment for five months, and they do their own branding on the train, but as soon as you’re off, their involvement ends. ‘We want to stay away from any brand hijacking or owning the event; that comes with its own demons. They want
databases; it’s all about picking up social behaviours and user statistics. We’re adamant in protecting the community. We don’t want the ride to become a hindrance to anyone. You want to ride; you ride. You don’t want to ride; you don’t. There’s no signup, no registration. It’s all about having fun and being with your friends.’ All of which makes sense, really. That’s exactly why the lads started the whole thing in the first place: they simply thought it would be fun. Join the mass every full moon under the Green Point circle at 9pm. For more info and the calendar, check out www.moonlightmass.co.za, and follow @moonlightmass for regular updates. And remember the rules: wear a helmet; use reflective gear; switch on your lights; obey all traffic laws.

BRZeeeeeeeeeee!
pictures: supplied
David Taylor finds happiness in a rear-wheel-drive sports car. Subaru’s BRZ is the first subtle model in its performance arsenal. It doesn’t have the Lenasia-edition gold-alloy wheels and there’s no ironing board on the boot. It’s not all-wheel drive and it’s not that fast either. So what exactly is the BRZ then? Keen-eyed car people will cry out, ‘Hey, this is one of those Toyota things,’ and they’d be right. Sort of. See, while Toyota did most of the work designing the car, it was Subaru who worked on the engine. The result was two cars that are visually similar, yet quite different in the way they drive. Whereas the Toyota is marketed as a cheap way of getting a part as an extra in the Fast and the

Lego lane-changer
That ever-popular British motoring show has broken new ground by having a Google Earth car go round its test track. While it won’t have set any speed records, the footage from its specialised camera means you’re virtually able to walk the Dunsfold Park layout using Streetview either on a computer or smartphone.
Whether six or 60, Lego is one of those toys you never grow out of. For Australian Steve Sammartino and Romanian Raul Oaida, their love of Lego resulted in a life-size working car. Steve organised crowd-funding (Lego isn’t cheap), while Raul began construction in Romania. What makes this car even more astounding is it moves using compressed air.

Furious franchise, the Subaru is a little more refined and boasts more features. You sit quite low in the BRZ, much like a racing driver. The steering wheel feels as if it’s crafted to suit only your hands. The seats are upright and sporty. The dashboard and buttons look like they’re from an aircraft. This car is aimed at making the driver smile. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking this is some woefully impractical midlife crisis on wheels. It has a useable boot, and the rear seats have just enough legroom for smaller children. Its 2.0-litre motor won’t be setting land-speed records anytime soon, but
it provides respectable performance. Let’s just say you won’t be too bothered trying to hit 100km/h; the focus instead is rather how you get to the national speed limit. See, while most car manufacturers are trying to make cars more refined and less hands-on, Subaru has done exactly the opposite. This is one of the most involving cars you’ll ever experience. Whether you’re cruising at 120km/h or 50km/h, you feel mechanically connected to the car. Even driving to your local Spar for bread and milk is a momentous occasion. You’ll also start to avoid the highways to find a longer, more winding route home. This probably isn’t a bad idea, especially if you live in Gauteng (*cough* e-tolls *cough*). The BRZ acts like a R389 900 puppy as you open the front door when you get home. You could have the worst day at the office, but as you open that driver’s door and start her up, your troubles are forgotten. For that feeling of freedom and sense of being a classic racing driver, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better alternative. Don’t forget your pair of leather driving gloves for the full effect.

Five autumn convertibles
Convertibles + summer = a very unfortunate cliché. Not only is it far too hot, but the risk of severe sunburn is very real too. The best time to drive a convertible is right now – in autumn, when the weather is just right.

The top comes off the small, funky and fashionable French runabout. Technically, this isn’t even a cabriolet, as the retractable roof operates in the same manner as a giant sunroof. The upside of this is that you can open and close it while driving on the highway – a bonus, as most convertibles require you to slow right down to operate the roof.

A popular choice amongst the ladies is the lithe SLK. It’s quite pricey, but it’s downright classy and brimming with smart technology, such as vents that blow warm air onto your neck. You can be sensible and get the 2.0-litre model, or scare yourself silly with the V8-powered AMG model.

The Volkswagen Golf is a pleasant-enough family hatchback, but it seems to blend in with the crowd. A cabriolet version combines all the sensibility of the Golf with serious head-turning ability. If you want some go to match the show, there’s even a GTI version.

Hit the road Jack, and make sure you come back David Taylor checks your checklist for a safe road trip over the Easter holidays.
HITTING THE ROAD for the Easter holidays? Keen to just drop everything and tackle the highway with music blaring? Before you start pretending you’re Hunter S Thompson and embark on the most epic of road trips, you should consider a number of things that will make your trip even more enjoyable and, more importantly, safer for everyone around you.
picture: david taylor
Check your tyres Those four rubber things at each corner are rather important, as they’re the only connection your car has with the tarmac. When you realise that each offers only a small area of contact and determines your stability on the road, it’s apparent how important it is to ensure your wheels are correctly inflated and aligned. Incorrectly inflated tyres wear out quicker and increase your fuel consumption. Get them checked first thing before you set off. Don’t forget your spare tyre…
kulula.com
Cars 27.indd 117
Petrol, oil and water
During the trip
It may sound obvious, but as anyone who’s ever been stuck on the side of the N1, 50km from civilisation will tell you, these things can slip your mind. Petrol makes the car go, so ensure you have a full tank and can reach your destination or another fuel station. Water keeps the car cool through the radiator and oil lubricates the moving mechanical points. Without the right amounts of each, your baby will grind to a halt.
You should take a break every two hours. Long-distance driving, even with mates and music, can be monotonous and your attention starts to wander. You lose focus, daydream of the destination and that’s when accidents happen. Pull over, get out of the car and walk around a bit.
Prepare yourself Forget about the car for a second. The most important thing to look after is yourself. The nut behind the wheel must be tight and secure. Ensure you’re well rested and have sufficient refreshments and snacks with you. If you’re worried you may nod off behind the wheel, one of those highly potent energy drinks will help, but be warned, once the effects wear off you get drowsy quickly. And don’t forget to pack loads of biltong.
Road trips are a team sport Spread the load by sharing the driving with your mates. Not only will you be able to rest between shifts, but you can keep an eye on each other. If you’re alone, put on some upbeat music. I find singing along helps, which is probably why I have to drive alone…
Things to have in the car The following things I find are invaluable on longer journeys: torch; first-aid kit; blanket; small change for tolls; jumper cables; cellphone charger and a big bottle of water. A map and GPS unit wouldn’t go amiss either.

Doing it for the
dugongs
pictures: flickr, des pollock
An adventurous eco-warrior is drawing attention to an endangered species that gets a lot less attention than others. Dale Hes paddles out. It is not unusual for a South African to travel to Mozambique. Thousands of us flock to the country each year, content to sip rum and raspberries, abuse fourwheelers and sprawl on white beaches. But solo explorer Des Pollock is a different breed of Saffa entirely. In January, the 42-year-old Capetonian finished a pioneering expedition, having paddled, unsupported, 2 500 kilometres along the entire Mozambican coast to raise awareness for the plight of East Africa's critically endangered dugong. Kicking off from Ponta d'Ouro in July 2013, Des travelled alone in a kayak, following dugong migratory routes and stopping at all the major tourist towns along the way as part of a mission called Paddling for the Love of Dugongs. ‘My biggest motivation comes from an injury I suffered and a very personal

encounter with a dugong,’ says Des. In 1996, Des had his spine severed by a boat propeller in Mozambique and took two years to recover from paralysis. ‘I swam with a dugong for more than 20 minutes while recovering from my accident,' explains Des. 'This turned my life around and I have been involved as an eco-warrior ever since. I survived, and now I want the same to happen with critically endangered dugongs, who are often killed or injured by accidents similar to mine.’
Dugong with the wind After battling strong winds, swirling currents, shark-infested waters, sweltering temperatures and little drinking water, a grizzled Des was joined by friends and sponsors to complete the last leg of his journey, from Pemba to the
Mozambican border with Tanzania. Along the way, he faced malaria, a broken kayak and a near-death experience when his kayak overturned at the mouth of the Limpopo River. Care to swap your fourwheeler for a paddle, anyone? ‘The mind likes to find every excuse to cut corners and give up,’ says Des. ‘Fear crept in to put me off, but I didn't let it control me. I controlled it.’
Marine bovine The dugong (Dugong dugon), also known as the sea cow, is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, and there are estimated to be around just 500 left in East African waters. region's only viable population of the mysterious mammals, with a census by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan University’s Centre for Dolphin Studies counting 340 individuals. ‘Dugongs desperately need protection, because it is almost impossible to build up populations once they are gone,’ explains Janneman Conradie, director of the Marine Megafauna Foundation. ‘They eat a very specific type of grass, are easily stressed and, because they live in calm and shallow bays, are easy to target with nets. Population growth is also extremely slow.’

by a group of scientists from universities across Africa. ‘Crucial dugong information has been collected, and this is positive news for scientists dealing with the migration-route statistics of East Africa's last remaining dugong populations,’ explains Des. An extract taken from the adventurer’s diary gives an inside view of the trailblazer's voyage: ‘I need to take moments to capture the essence of what's occurring in me, to understand, to remember these remarkable sensations – illuminations and epiphanies of this environmental enlightenment. Spread all around lay nothing but the freedom of wide open innocences – endless beaches, endless sand, endless water.’ See more on Des's expedition by liking his page, 'Paddling for the Love of Dugongs', on Facebook.

Finding financial freedom
You may have the right to vote, the right to express yourself freely and even occasionally to wear a pink tie to work, but are you financially free, wonders Katherine Graham. Imagine you’re out fixing a leak on the roof. The ladder wobbles, you lose your footing and whoops! You fall and badly injure yourself. You’re unable to work for six months, possibly longer. Do you have the income to cover your bond repayments and your family’s living expenses during this time? It may sound like an unlikely scenario, but it happened a few months ago to someone I know. Thankfully, he had a personal income protection policy, so he didn’t have to worry. His wife is still concerned about his back, but at least she and the family have food to eat. Planning for your future and life’s unexpected twists and turns is at the core of finding financial freedom.
picture: thinkstock
Take control of your finances The first step to financial freedom is to have a good idea of your monthly income and expenditure – this will help you draw up an accurate budget. ‘All good money habits begin with creating a budget, where you clearly outline all your expenses,’ explains Laurence Hillman, MD of 1Life. It can be a schlep, I know, but look for an easy online template to get you going. The following month you’ll just need to tweak it slightly.

that if your car breaks down or you have a huge medical bill, you don’t need to pay for it with your credit card. Once this fund is established (preferably a separate account that you can’t dip into), you’re ready for longerterm savings goals.
Protect yourself, draw up a will and plan for your retirement Budgeting will show you where you’re spending your money and should help you find ways to cut down. Then you’ll have more money left over for saving, which is really the ultimate goal.
Tackle your debt Reduce the debt that costs you the most interest. Store cards are a bad idea if you’re an impulsive buyer – this debt can be very costly. Aim to pay off as much of your home loan as possible while interest rates are low. ‘We appear to be at the bottom of the interest-rate cycle,’ advises John Loos of FNB Home Loans. ‘Borrow well within your means and make sure you are able to afford a good few interest-rate hikes,’
Create a rainy-day fund Saving for unforeseen emergencies should be your first short-term goal. You need to create a buffer fund so
These are your important longterm goals. Remember that the earlier you start saving for your retirement, the more you benefit from compound interest, the so-called eighth wonder of the world. Invest in a variety of asset classes so that you don’t have all your eggs in the same proverbial basket. Income protection – whether due to death, disability or illness – is another crucial aspect of financial empowerment. And drawing up a will means that there’s no confusion about how your assets and liabilities will be handled when you’ve passed away.
Don’t forget a dream bucket Saving isn’t only for fuddy-duddies. Create a savings account for things that are fun, like going on an exotic holiday or buying your dream car. As Laurence puts it, ‘Often saving towards something can be far more gratifying and enjoyable than buyer’s remorse.’

STUFF | HEALTH
Healthy highlights April is all about perambulating, accumulating and exercising. Take your mind for a stroll Searching for inspiration? Your best bet may be to pull on your takkies and get moving. In a study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, cognitive psychologist Lorenza Colato delved a little deeper into why authors like Søren Kierkegaard, Henry James and Thomas Mann were known for taking a stroll before sitting down to write, claiming that it helped them come up with new ideas. Fact or fanciful notion? Colato had two test groups – those who take part in regular exercise and those who don’t – perform a series of creativethinking tests based on divergent and convergent thinking. Divergent thinking
means devising as many solutions as possible for a problem, while convergent thinking leads to one single correct solution. Considering all its other benefits, it’s little surprise that the exercising group outperformed their sedentary counterparts. Wonder how this info can help you? Go for a walk and figure it out.
If you love something you’ll let it go… …or, as a new study of adults over the age of 50 has revealed, maybe not. Science may have the answer to why everyone’s granny’s house is a collection of knick-knacks, bits and pieces, and odds and ends: it turns out that as we
get older, we become less and less likely to sell or donate items we no longer need. More than half of the 22 000 people surveyed reported having more things than they needed. This accumulation of stuff, say the researchers at Kansas University, may come down to physical logistical issues (it’s just too much of a pain to figure out how to get rid of it) or emotional attachment (it causes you pain to part with it). The smart thing to do? Continually review your possessions throughout your life, not just when you’re trying to move 60 years of accumulated everything-you-can-imagine into a granny flat.
It’s 8am at Montecasino and something other than the dregs of late-night gamblers is stirring. Men and women in spandex, shorts, fluorescent socks and takkies are strolling through the place, on their way to something different… South African lifestyle and wellness expert Lisa Raleigh began her free-to-the-public beach yoga in Durban in 2006. Back then she offered one free yoga session a week to anyone with the desire to get fit and stay that way. Today Lisa has joined forces with Crosse & Blackwell Trim to create SUNfit, an exercise initiative now offered in Durban (Suncoast Casino, Sundeck), Cape Town (Southern Sun Cullinan Hotel) and Jo’burg (Montecasino, Piazza), where anyone of any age and any fitness level can join a free hour-long fitness class six days a week. ‘My goal is to get everyone eating less and moving more,’ says Lisa. ‘We don’t all have the same opportunities. We’ve created an outlet for those who want to get fit but can’t afford a gym membership.’ SUNfit classes are interactive and fun, and participants can sample kickboxing, yoga, Zumba, boot camp and CoreFit, with every day bringing a different experience led by a hand-picked professional. ‘All you need is a smile, towel, and water bottle,’ says Lisa, ‘we’ll do the rest.’ Classes take place Monday to Friday from 5:30pm-6:30pm, and Saturdays at 8am. Free your mind The irony of San Francisco is that it’s home to one of the world’s most famous places of incarceration: Alcatraz. Tourists queue up for ferries to the prison from which the only successful escape to freedom was apparently undertaken by Clint Eastwood. These days, though, Golden Gate City is better known as America’s most liberal metropolis. Not only is it the nation’s gay capital, but it’s also widely perceived as a place where all sorts of bohemians and misfits can fit in, find acceptance, and be left to get on with it. It’s no secret that even America’s homeless flock there for the good weather and easy-going vibe. On my last visit, I joined an annual April 1st celebration organised by The First Church of the Last Laugh. Known as the St Stupid’s Day Parade, it encourages participants to behave in a ridiculous, childlike manner while wearing extremely silly and outrageous costumes. This being San Fran, many turned up naked, but others dressed as jesters, freakish nuns, and every variety of masked hooligan. Some simply donned funny hats, weird sunglasses, or carried signs riddled with stupid sayings, usually complaining about the corporate-capitalist system. All in the name of good, clean, antiestablishment fun. The parade followed a specified route and decamped at various Downtown hotspots where a man with a loudhailer, dressed like a cross between Merlin the Magician and a Hogwarts professor, banged on a drum and uttered rhyming

announcements, reminding us all to remain silly and spontaneous. We held banners aloft and screamed and cheered and continued on our merry way. It was a fun, buffoonish take on civil disobedience, reminding us that it’s perfectly okay occasionally to colour outside the lines. It made me wonder about the love of crazy gatherings in my own home town, where there’s also an island prison, plus a regular spate of far more serious street protests. In March, Cape Town’s radicals staged a Naked Bike Ride, encouraging us to strip down for the sake of a good cause. Nudity is always a good metaphor for reducing carbon emissions, and with the possible exception of sunburn in places that don’t usually see the light of day, the event didn’t harm anyone. To experience the world turned radically upside-down, though, you can keep your clothes on and head for the Tankwa Karoo at the beginning of next month. A few hours from the city, AfrikaBurn rethinks our reality, proposing instead that one exists without commerce
or trade, cherishes art and creativity, and reminds participants what it’s like to survive in a harsh environment. It’s another form of stripping off, surrendering to a very real sense of community and inclusion. Essentially, it’s about letting go of the many illusions that cloud our imaginations, holding us captive in prisons of our own creation. It’s April: set yourself free.
