n true style, Mizani hosted its very first client evening in March this year, at the L’Oréal Technical Centre, in Woodmead, Johannesburg. The venue was beautifully adorned in luxurious black and gold décor, which created the setting for the cocktail event. Gold Tiffany chairs, which were arranged in fashion show style, allowed the models to walk down the aisles as they showed off their Mizani styled hair to the guests. Salon owners and stylists from the greater Gauteng region were invited to come together for a night of inspiring styles and cocktails. Even though it was a Johannesburg based event, clients from as far as East London, joined the other Mizani clients at this spectacular event. The purpose of the evening was not only for clients to network, but to create an opportunity for Mizani to show its gratitude to

its clients for all their support over the years and also to inspire them through the showcasing of Mizani’s latest hair trends for 2013. The trends were a variety of genres, from street styles to catwalk trends, afro, short and long relaxed hair. The talented Mizani creative team spent the entire day prepping beautiful models to showcase that evening. The highlight of the evening was the showcasing of the latest hair trends by Mizani Education Manager, Bongani Mabunda. His electrifying stage energy had the hairdressers begging for more as he called his creative team on stage to work their magic. The models, confident in their hairstyles, strutted down the aisles leaving the guests in awe. The General Manager of L’Oréal Professional Products Division, Jane Maclaren-Taylor, took to the stage to welcome all the guests and thank them for their

continued support for the brand. Followed by Lindelwa Gama, Product Manager of Mizani, who re-ignited the brand in the clients’ minds, assuring them that Mizani is still a brand that is committed to innovation and client support. She also took the opportunity to launch the Supreme Oil range to the clients, one of Mizani’s key launches for 2013. The glamorous evening was a huge success and enjoyed by all the guests. It was the perfect opportunity for Mizani hairdressers to come together, network and be inspired. The feedback and reaction from the event is evidence that the ethnic hair industry needs more events like this and according to Lindelwa, it won’t be the last, as Mizani plans to conquer the country with more inspiring events, possibly even on a bigger scale.

Mizani is still a brand that is committed to innovation and client support.

In September we will wish the talented winners of the Intercoiffure Foundation Guillaume photographic competition bon voyage, as they set off to Paris to participate in the junior forum and perform at the Intercoiffure Night of the Stars.

foundation-comp-events 2.indd 2

oundation Guillaume is the youth of Intercoiffure, consisting mostly of junior stylists working in the Intercoiffure salons. Once a year, a platform is created for younger stylists (under 27 years of age) to perform at the Intercoiffure International Annual General Meeting. In September this year, juniors will get together in Paris for a week. A generous sponsor, Schwarzkopf, has made it possible for two local junior stylists to attend this forum. In order for Intercoiffure South Africa to select two delegates, a photographic competition has been created. The theme this year was Dichotomy: the universe exists in a dichotomy, a harmonious dichotomy of the mutually exclusive and jointly exhaustive binary self. From male to female, good to evil,

life to death, without one there can be no other. The challenge was to combine two opposite elements and produce one image. A record amount of entries were received from Intercoiffure salons from all over South Africa.

Winning hairstyles; Top left: Billy-Jean de Jager, third place. Top right: Gareth Strydom, second place. Bottom right: Salome de Wet, first place.

2013/08/26 11:20 AM

The judging evening took place at the Schwarzkopf Academy in Cape Town where the difficult task of choosing a winner was left in the hands of the experts. Once again, the photographic competition had some of the best judges in the industry: Hugo Minnie, owner of Hugo The Hair Company, a well-known judge and competitor; Riana Stemmet, Director of the Stellenbosch Hairdressing Academy and an international competitor; and Lilene Pelser, ASK National Business Manager for Schwarzkopf, who has been with the company for 13 years. ESTETICA AFRO is thrilled to announce the winners for 2013: first place, Salome de Wet of Fusion Living, second place, Gareth Strydom of DNA Salon and third place, Billy-Jean de Jager of Playboy. Special thanks must go to Annelies, Belinda and the Schwarzkopf Professional team for their on-going support, assistance and commitment to this project and to Intercoiffure. Thanks to Schwarzkopf, Salome and Gareth will be heading off to Paris, with the costs of their flights, accommodation, spending money, workshops and shows being covered. All participants need to be congratulated for the very high standard of entries and creativity that was produced.

Hair Soiree

A

The exciting build-up to the Rebecca Summer Collection 2013 was exhilarating. Media, socialites, celebrities and key industry figures waited in anticipation to see the impressive hair styles.

rebecca-events 2.indd 2

t the end of last year, Rebecca Fashion International staged a lavish runway hair show, as the pièce de résistance to the culmination of an integrated brand awareness campaign, marking the launch of their newest range of hair extensions and wigs onto the South African market. Rebecca Fashion International represents two major product ranges in South Africa: Joedir premium 100 percent human hair products geared towards the higher LSM market, and Magic synthetic hair products. A global powerhouse with a firmly established brand presence in seven other African countries, as well as in countries across the globe, Rebecca sought to launch a brand awareness campaign that would make a big splash in South African waters.

With a month-long online and social media campaign, leading up to a star-studded fashion show at Monte Casino’s prestigious La Toscana in Johannesburg, the digital aspect of the campaign fulfilled two key roles: promoting the Joedir and Magic ranges themselves, as well as building excitement, momentum and buzz around the event. Their Facebook fan page ran a competition that gave fans the opportunity to win VIP tickets to the exclusive soiree. ESTETICA SA’s Editor, Cindy Horton, attended the exclusive event and was treated to true VIP style; chauffeured from the airport and escorted to the venue, where the Rebecca Fashion International team were waiting to personally greet guests on arrival. The event showcased the versatility of the product range. The pieces were styled into a combination of haute-couture, avant garde creations as well as flowing natural styles and were emphasised by equally dramatic designer garments. The show was a smashing success: hosted by the enchanting Elana Afrika, the Rebecca Summer Collection 2013 was attended by notable celebrities such as Letshego Rankin, Moira Mosimane and Lorna Potgieter-Rossetti, as well as representatives from a number of influential South African magazines, including ESTETICA SA, Seventeen, Destiny, Shimmer and Move. Guests were entertained by over 30 models, sporting twice as many different showstopping hairpiece looks. Electrifying music, laser shows and elementally-inspired themes further added to the theatrical atmosphere. A truly glamorous evening was had by all, cementing the

2013/07/18 3:23 PM

Rebecca Fashion International brand as a trend-setting hairpiece product, perfect for the stylish South African woman. Since the launch, Rebecca Fashion International has experienced great success in the local market and their products are stocked in a variety of stores throughout South Africa. Due to the high uptake and demand of their products, specifically the high end natural hair extensions, Rebecca Fashion International has decided to launch a new brand called Couture, which will be the most prestigious and luxurious human hair in their range. Toward the end of this year, Rebecca Fashion International will embark on a nationwide shopping mall launch campaign for the Couture product line. Exclusive hair shows will be setup in major malls around the country, and spot prizes will be offered to consumers and bystanders. ESTETICA AFRO looks forward to seeing the new range; there can never be enough of premium quality hair extensions to choose from.

Toya Delazy

T

Tell us a bit about yourself as a child growing up in eMahlabathini in KwaZulu-Natal? I would say I was very spirited, adventurous and a little mischievous. I loved the outdoors and sports, so I was always active. I loved my culture and singing, watching cultural shows and just having a good time. I come from a very religious family and I went to a convent from a young age, so I’ve always been surrounded by religion and structure. I think it gave me the discipline I need today. You were destined for the music industry. How did it all fall into place? Music has always been a part of my life. From the age of nine, I started playing the classical piano and it was then when I started composing music. Learning classical piano at such a young age helped structure my musical understanding of how heartfelt chords are formed, how to read music and have agility discipline on the keys. I knew I wanted a career in music and I began performing at various places. One day a very talented producer, Markus Els, heard me at a live show and invited me to record a few songs in studio. Vusi Leeuw was given the demo and he presented it to Sony Music. They liked what they heard and before I knew it, I was part of the Sony Music team. What has the journey been like so far?

interview.indd 2

Image: Ross Garrett

Cindy Horton, Editor of ESTETICA AFRO, chats to local singer, Toya Delazy, on the phenomenal success she has achieved in the last two years.

he 23 year old, Toya Delazy, who won two awards at the 19th South African Music Awards (SAMA) 2013, is the great granddaughter of another SAMA winner Princess Magogo and has experienced a whirlwind of success since launching her debut album Due Drop. Toya’s positive attitude, alluring voice and inspirational lyrics has won her numerous awards and made her a household name. ESTETICA AFRO gets the inside-scoop on what inspires this local star, her personal sound and funky dress sense.

Shining Star

Her style is a mix of street wear and vintage items with a funky, yet classical touch.

2013/08/27 10:04 AM

What has the journey been like so far? It’s been extremely educational. I had to grow up really quickly, learn the business of music and adapt to all the changes in my life. It’s been an amazing experience so far, and I look forward to what the future holds. How has South Africa received your debut album Due Drop? The response has been amazing. I’ve been receiving tweets and messages from fans, and they really seem to like it. I’ve also just released Due Drop Deluxe, which is a two CD set including two new tracks, remixes and a bonus DVD with all four singles videos (Pump It On, Love Is In The Air, Are You Gonna Stay and Heart), plus the behind-the-scenes documentary, It Takes A Lot To Make A Classic, shot earlier this year.

Image: Ross Garrett

What is the inspiration behind your music? My music is all about my journey and life experiences. I translate my emotions into music.

Toya's forever-changing hairstyles are daring and creative, keeping her look fresh, and funky.

“I loved my culture and singing, watching cultural shows, and just having a good time.” interview

interview.indd 3

41 2013/07/16 2:33 PM

Describe your sound? I think I have a very unique sound. It’s a fusion of Jazz, Electro Hop and Pop. I call it JEHP and it’s definitely something that is different and appeals to many listeners. My album has an electro-hop element to it, but it is not going to be the main element. My music is a fusion of various genres. People can expect some soul, Jazz, and acapella. It’s a lucky packet – everyone walks away with something. Which musicians have influenced your music? My influences come from a variety of genres. However, my love for music grew from classical songs such as Debussy's Clair de Lune, which unlocked my creativity and influenced the way I construct my chords, as well as orchestral works like the Psalms of David sang by choirs in cathedrals, the voices in harmonic beauty make me happy and soothe my spirit. I loved Lauryn Hill’s singing and beautiful soul from the first time I saw her in the movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. I’ve also been influenced by artists such as John Legend, Tracy Chapman, Goldfish, John Lennon, Norah Jones and Skrillex, to name a few.

“However, my love for music grew from classical songs such as Debussy's Clair de Lune.” What does the future hold for you? Any plans to go international? Things have happened so fast during the last two years. I’m using the time I have now to grow personally and to get to know my country. I’d love to go international and it’s definitely one of my goals. Hopefully, I’ll be performing overseas in the next few years.

How would you describe your style? Style is a way for me to express myself. My mom was very stylish, but I come from a very conservative background. I like street wear, mix it up with vintage items and I arrange my outfits so that it is funky with a classical touch. You were recently announced as the new face of the Legit Winter range 2013. How did it feel to be approached by such a mainstream retail brand? I’ve always been interested in putting my look together in my own special way. I wasn’t too surprised when Legit approached me, because I have been working on my identity for some time now. Needless to say, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. I’m looking forward to seeing how my fans respond to the Toya ‘re-invention’.

Landi Le Roux n 20 February 2013, ghd launched the long awaited eclipse™ styler to the Cape Town audience. ESTETICA AFRO speaks to ghd South Africa’s Marketing manager, Landi Le Roux, about the new innovations in technology and what makes this such a revolutionary styler.

South African fashionistas and beauty gurus finally got the chance to experience the anticipated ghd eclipse™ styler.

The much anticipated ghd eclipse™ has finally been launched in South Africa. What was it like leading up to the launch? The ghd eclipse™ styler has been in the making for a couple of years and the South African marketing and education teams were introduced to our newest addition in early 2012. It was very hard to contain our excitement and keep this big secret for nearly a year, so when the time finally arrived, we were ecstatic. How does the design of the ghd eclipse styler differ to the original? ghd eclipse™ is the only styler with patented tri-zone™ technology. The new tri-zone™ technology guarantees that optimum styling temperature is constantly delivered to the hair during styling, giving quicker and longer-lasting results on all hair types. ghd eclipse™ has new precisionfinished plates, making them perfectly flat so they glide through even the thickest, frizziest hair for faster styling and exceptional shine. They are mid-pivoted, which enables them to grip the hair better and allows for better heat transfer into the hair. The outer case is much cooler than other stylers, even after prolonged use. This makes styling easier and helps the user achieve root-totip styling or enhanced volume. It also has a faster heat-up time. It’s ready to style within 20 seconds of being switched on.

Tri-zone™ technology

The breakthrough tri-zone™ technology makes it easy to style the toughest of textures, such as very thick, curly or afro hair.

What does tri-zone™ technology do? Tri-zone™ technology gives the ghd eclipse™ three times the styling power of other stylers, because

ghd-interview.indd 2

2013/08/26 11:32 AM

uses three ultra-sensitive sensors on each plate – most other stylers only have one. These sensors respond instantly to any fluctuation in temperature to guarantee the optimum styling temperature is used consistently during styling. Consistent heat makes styling easier and delivers ultimate results in just one stroke, even on the most challenging hair types. To get the best results, all hair types need a styler set at 185°C – the optimum styling temperature for hair, but different hair types absorb different amounts of heat. While finer hair absorbs little heat from the plates, challenging hair types absorb much more, causing the plates to lose their temperature more quickly. Tri-zone™ technology recognises even the slightest loss of temperature anywhere on the plate and responds immediately, with the right amount of heat to bring the plate temperature back up to 185°C. Does styling on a higher heat give you a better style? Is that what you mean by optimum heat? No. The optimum styling temperature for styler plates is 185°C. Maintaining this optimum temperature throughout styling is crucial to achieve a superior result. Tri-zone™ technology ensures consistent heat, the optimum styling

temperature of 185°C is delivered throughout styling. Stylers set at higher temperatures than 185°C expose your hair to unnecessary heat and can be very damaging. Difficult, thick or frizzy hair does not need to be styled at a higher temperature; it just needs a styler that is advanced enough to maintain the optimum temperature of 185°C throughout styling. Styling at temperatures above 195°C can make the hair too dry and strip the cuticle, leaving the hair so ‘thirsty’ that it quickly re-absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, making a style drop more quickly and hair frizzier. The key to achieving better style is maintaining a consistent moisture level within the hair which requires maintaining the optimum temperature throughout styling and styling in fewer strokes. What is thermal control? Thermal control is the term used to describe a styler’s ability to regulate its plate temperature. Thermal control is crucial to a styler’s performance. A styler with excellent thermal control, such as ghd eclipse™, is able to maintain a constant temperature, within a few degrees, no matter how challenging the hair it is styling. Stylers with poor thermal control are either

incapable of detecting changes in plate temperature or unable to respond, which means it can take several passes through a section to achieve your style. This is damaging to the hair and won’t create a long-lasting finish. Why does consistent heat matter? Styling consistently with the optimum plate temperature (185°C) allows you to style in fewer strokes, which is better for the hair. It also helps retain moisture within the hair and seals the cuticle, leaving each strand with a shinier, smoother finish and relatively impermeable to humidity. This helps a style to last longer. Why is 185°C the optimum temperature for styling the hair? Independent scientific research* on the effects of heating hair show that hair enters ‘the glass transition phase’ when heated. In this phase hair can be shaped (styled) and will retain its shape once it cools. The temperature of the glass transition phase can vary according to environmental factors and the moisture content of the hair, but our ghd scientists have found through extensive research that 185°C is the optimum temperature for the styler to achieve the most styling benefit in the fewest strokes. If you style at temperatures below 185°C it will often take many passes of the styler to achieve a good result and this is more drying to the hair than styling in one pass at 185°C. Styling at temperatures above 185°C exposes the hair to unnecessary heat and at temperatures above 215°C, the keratin protein in the hair starts to melt, causing irreversible damage. * Sources: The Advanced Experimental Medical Biology Journal 1977 p.329-334; a study by Mitchell and Feughelman published in the Textile Research Journal 1967; Biopolymers p371, 81, 2006 and The Science of Hair Care 2nd Ed 2005

How has the styler been received locally? Due to our experience with the styler over the last year, we anticipated that the market will accept it very well, but seeing stylists with

concept behind the brand. The defining principle is beauty and innovation in balance. All the products are formulated to work gently to balance the levels of moisture and protein in the hair, ensuring that it is endowed with the strength and flexibility it needs to stay healthy and looking beautiful. How have you seen the brand develop over the past three years? Over the past three years, the brand has been growing in triple digits and this is no doubt linked to the fact that the Mizani brand has become a priority of the Professional Products Division in L’Oréal. There has been great support on the brand from the division and company as a whole, to help grow the brand in various ways. The level of investment in the brand has also increased substantially from there being just one person working on it, to a full team with a Product Manager, Education Team, Sales Representatives and Technicians. We also continue to work in close partnership with salons through the implementation of various initiatives to help drive clientele into the salons. We have not only focused on educating the stylist but also educating the consumer through various media platforms such as the Mizani South Africa Facebook page and consumer magazines. How do you view the growth of the ethnic hair industry in South Africa? The ethnic hair care industry in South Africa is growing in leaps and bounds. Both ethnic and Caucasian salon owners are putting much of their investments into growing ethnic hair offering, as there is absolutely no doubt that it is the future of professional hairdressing. L’Oréal has taken it a step further by introducing the L’Oréal Professional African Salon Institute which will be responsible for the training of the next generation of hairdressers. What’s new in Mizani’s educational programme? Whether you specialise in relaxed or natural hair, Mizani classes are designed to build both your technical and creative skills, as well as enhance your overall earning potential by providing various service options and a working understanding of all Mizani premium products. Education is the core focus of the Mizani brand and we have introduced four exciting education offerings: This is Mizani, Go with the Fro, Relax with Mizani and Trends Cutting and Styling. What is even more exciting is that L’Oréal

South Africa, in partnership with Mizani and L’Oréal Professional, is proudly launching the very first L’Oréal Professional African Salon Institute in September. The purpose of this institute is to train the next generation of hairdressers. The institute will be offering two programmes, namely part-time and intensive full-time, which also gives the opportunity to people who want to make a career change. The part-time courses will run over 16 months and the intensive full-time course will be for eight months. Once the courses have been completed, the hairdresser will be certified as a L’Oréal Professional Certified Stylist. Any student that would like to study hairdressing at the institute does not need any qualification, but must be 16 years or older and have the passion to become a professional stylist. The site for the L’Oréal Professional African Salon Institute was strategically chosen to be at the education hub of Johannesburg, close to the Wits University in the Braamfontein area, for easy access to subways and train stations. Currently, in how many provinces can Mizani products be found? Mizani is present in all the key provinces in South Africa. However, our focus has been the greater Gauteng region. Looking to the future, how do you plan on expanding into new territories? Going forward, we want to also focus on all the other regions as much as we have Johannesburg, with strong education platforms and the latest trend offerings. What is unique about Mizani as a brand and a product? Without a doubt, what makes Mizani unique is the fact that it transcends all boundaries. It is not race specific, but rather formulated for all curl types. We are every colour, texture, curl type and woman, as well as cutting edge, easy elegance, relaxed sophistication and high style. Any exciting and new innovations and product launches we can look forward to in the near future? Of course, because of L’Oréal’s commitment to research and innovation, the Mizani research team, through its advanced, patented technology, is always discovering new ways to care for textured hair and scalp. The New Butterblend with patent pending HG technology has an ultra-moisturising blend of

interview.indd 5

Cocoa butter, Shea butter and honey. The Butterblend Relaxer System has always delivered unsurpassed protection and intense conditioning. The new patent-pending HG Technology enhances the Butterblend Relaxer performance while preserving the hair’s fiber integrity. The second innovation, which will be launched later this year, is the Mizani Edge Taming Gel which instantly tames and controls strays, fly aways and unruly edges for sharp shapes, tapered cuts and highly defined styles. The Jojoba, Sunflower and Aragon oil infusion replenishes essential moisture and adds touchable control. It contains anti-oxidant Vitamin E and ceramide which helps strengthen the hair and creates a protective shield on the hair cuticle. The gel is free of stickiness or flaking, and the Mineral oil and Petrolatum free technology won’t create the build-up that sacrifices flexibility and shine. It’s unique Petrolatum free gel-wax texture provides a smooth, sleek, firm hold with a clean, nongreasy feel.

Relaxing Repair ocal stylist, Jawad Maphoto, and Softsheen Carson Business Development Manager, Mashudu Netshidzivhani, offer readers advice on how to care for their fragile strands and keep them looking gorgeously healthy.

The hair goes through a dramatic structural transformation when being relaxed. Therefore, it is extremely important that we understand how to correctly care for relaxed hair without further damaging it.

round table.indd 2

How would you recommend clients prepare their hair before relaxing it? Jawad Maphoto, Lajawi Beaute Café owner, Pretoria I always advise my clients to base their hair three days before relaxing it. This helps to prevent irritation of the scalp. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Inland Business Development Manager, Softsheen Carson I must begin with the obvious; only begin the relaxer process on hair that is in tip-top shape. If your hair is breaking or shedding, I suggest that you do not relax it. You must understand that you are taking a huge gamble with your hair health by proceeding with a chemical relaxer application on compromised hair. In short, chemical hair relaxing is a very stressful process on the hair. There are a few things that you can do before you chemically process your hair that can mitigate damage to your precious strands. Find out how to prepare your hair before relaxing in Damage Control, page 52-53.

Can you resume your normal hair routine and product usage after relaxing your hair? Jawad Maphoto, Lajawi Beaute Café owner, Pretoria It's advisable to not apply heavy products onto the hair and to be too vigorous or pull the hair after relaxing. Applying a light conditioner to relaxed hair will help to improve its condition. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Inland Business Development Manager, Softsheen Carson I would advise using less shampoo to assist in keeping the hair moisturised. Relaxed hair needs

to be washed less often due to the fact that you might experience more breakage or hair loss. Always use a leave-in conditioner or an oil moisturiser and avoid using excessive solid grease, like petroleum, on the hair as this clogs hair follicles preventing normal hair growth. How often should you wash relaxed hair? Jawad Maphoto, Lajawi Beaute Café owner, Pretoria It's very important to wash your hair regularly, as it stimulates growth. Make sure to wash your relaxed hair at least once a week. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Inland Business Development Manager, Softsheen Carson It is always good to wash your hair as it adds extra moisture. Chemically-treated hair must always be treated with a leave-in conditioner after every wash. It is just as important to make sure that you don’t dry your hair out from excessive shampooing, although it should have a clean scalp. Hair thrives and grows well when the scalp is clean and healthy. In order to strike a perfect balance, I advise washing and conditioning the hair once a week. How do you prevent relaxed hair from breaking? Jawad Maphoto, Lajawi Beaute Café owner, Pretoria To prevent your relaxed hair from breaking make sure to apply a proper moisture cream, cut the split ends regularly and only relax your hair every six to eight weeks. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Inland Business Development Manager, Softsheen Carson Relaxed hair is fragile, vulnerable and damaged, but with daily moisturising and weekly reconditioning of the hair, breakage can be greatly decreased. If the hair is tangled, comb the hair in small sections to avoid breakage, even when conditioner is in the hair, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots. Wide tooth combs should be used instead of a brush, to minimise damage caused by brushing at the point where the new growth and relaxed hair meet. Your thoughts on colouring relaxed hair? Jawad Maphoto, Lajawi Beaute Café owner, Pretoria It's not advisable to colour relaxed hair unless the hair is in good condition. A lower developer should be used to process the colour. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Inland Business Development Manager, Softsheen Carson Natural hair can sometimes withstand extreme lightening, but not without heavy and frequent

conditioning. If your hair is relaxed, preferably choose a colour that doesn't lift your natural shade more than three levels. Permanent colour should only be applied two weeks after relaxing, when the hair has regained its strength. After relaxing, the hair can appear thin, flat and limp. How can you get it to look fuller? Jawad Maphoto, Lajawi Beaute Café owner, Pretoria After relaxing your hair, it's best to style it using rollers or wrap the hair using Mizani Foam Wrap. Not applying oily products will help give the hair more volume than weighing it down. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Inland Business Development Manager, Softsheen Carson Deep condition your hair fortnightly to maintain strength and moisture, and do not over wash your hair. To do this, apply a creamy deep conditioning treatment that contains both moisturising and mild protein ingredients, to clean damp hair. For best results, apply a plastic shower cap and let the hair sit for up to 30-45 minutes. Deep conditioning regularly and consistently can help maintain the hair's integrity, allowing it to withstand regular manipulation and styling, as well as preventing damage. Invest in a good deep conditioner as this will be the best tool for preventing hair damage and will leave your hair looking healthy and full of volume. What should I remember when heat styling relaxed hair? Jawad Maphoto, Lajawi Beaute Café owner, Pretoria When heat styling your relaxed hair, it is very important to apply a panted serum. This will help protect your hair against damage caused by the heat. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Inland Business Development Manager, Softsheen Carson I know when you wake up things may not be in the right place, but step away from the flat iron. Blow dry your hair once a week, then wrap set it and limit your usage of direct heat. The reason that you relax your hair is to get it straight and therefore the usage of direct heat regularly is not necessary. Relaxed hair should be left to air dry before using a blow dryer on a low to medium temperature. However, hair should be completely bone dry and a heat protection product applied before using a curling tong or flat iron. A ceramic styling iron is best to prevent hotspots from occurring, giving you a more consistent heat distribution. The hair can also be curled at a lower heat setting, thus preventing damage to the hair follicles and helping to maintain moisture in the hair.

Damage

Mashudu Netshidzivhani educates readers on the importance of preparing your hair before a relaxer.

reparing your hair before a relaxer is one of the best things you can do for the health of your strands. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Inland Business Development Manager for Softsheen Carson, gives us the four step game plan before relaxing your hair.

STEP 1: CLEAN IT UP

If you desire a straighter, more thoroughly processed result, your final shampoo should take place three to five days before your relaxer. During this wash, you should use a cleansing shampoo to remove any deposits or product build-up on the hair. If you do not wish to have a bone straight look and prefer some texture, then you may perform the relaxer process two weeks after your deep treatment (product build-up may slow down the process).

STEP 2: AVOID AGITATING YOUR SCALP

This may be common sense to hairdressers, because we all know that agitating the scalp too soon before a relaxer is a big no-no. This means no scratching, rubbing or hitting your head too hard. Wash your hair at least four days before getting a relaxer, as this will ensure that your scalp has produced enough of your hairs natural lubricant (sebum) to help protect it during the chemical application process. If you wait too long to relax your hair after a wash it might start to itch because of the accumulated dirt.

52 advice article-damage_control.indd 2

2013/08/26 12:51 PM

STEP 3: PROTECT IT

For a straighter turnout, be sure not to coat the new growth. Only the scalp and hair shaft past the new growth. Oiling the new growth itself may leave you under-processed, because the relaxer has to penetrate through the layers that have oil on it. As always, apply a protective base to the scalp, tops of ears and other sensitive areas. Also, remember to pay special attention to the length and ends of your hair. The hair shaft and ends are especially vulnerable to damage from the relaxing process, unless you protect them. Apply a light coating past the new growth to prevent the rest of the hair from being ‘re-relaxed’ as a result of overlapping and runoff during the final rinsing of the relaxer. Not protecting the hair shaft and ends is one of the reasons many ladies with relaxed hair have thinner ends.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR SCALP

The damage that relaxers do to the scalp is pretty wicked. If you are going to continue processing your hair, you have to pay particular attention to the health and maintenance of your scalp. Maintain a healthy scalp, no matter what kind of hair you have. Water based moisturisers are best for all hair types, although leave-in conditioners can double as a moisturiser for the hair. Try to avoid brushing your hair with harsh bristles.

STEP 4: TOUGHEN IT UP

Not protecting the hair shaft and ends is one of the reasons many ladies with relaxed hair have thinner ends.

Treat your hair to a protein treatment on the final wash before your relaxer. This prevents the relaxing process from totally compromising the strength of your hair when inner protein bonds are manipulated.

IMPORTANT

Never relax your hair to ‘get rid’ of a hair problem. Always correct the problem first with the proper treatment. Relaxing the hair will only aggravate the condition by making the hair weaker and more vulnerable to damage. Ensure that your hair is in top physical condition prior to the relaxer service, as this will give you better results with the finished product.

Skills

Dev T elo pme nt Services SETA finally speaks out about the critical changes taking place within the skills development sector and their plans to restore the hairdressing industry’s faith in them.

Dr Sihle Moon, Services SETA Administrator, gives readers an indepth look into the changes taking place within the skills development sector.

here is broad consensus among all key players in the South African skills development system that we are not, as a country, producing the skilled people required by our growth needs and certainly not in sufficient numbers. Those leaving our education and training system are, in large measure, not equipped or ready for the working world. Unless this problem is addressed, it will continue to haunt our growth and development prospects for years to come. The fact that there is consensus across the board: business, labour, government, community and the media, is in itself a positive development. It is this realisation and acknowledgement that has persuaded the Minister and management of the Department of Higher Education and Training to urgently improve things. However, for a sustainable turn-around to be achieved, all key stakeholders will have to play their part. As things stand, the consensus is fragile, but sufficiently widespread to warrant bold leadership from state and society. Its fragility resides in the fact that whilst there is agreement that something needs to be done, there is less agreement about what exactly needs doing. Nonetheless, there are a few irrefutable facts that consensus can be built around. Firstly, there is over R10 billion funds available annually to address the skills challenge and yet, the impact is negligible. Secondly, (apart from a few state owned enterprises and private sector organisations) both state departments and the private sector have largely failed to ‘turn their workplaces into training spaces’ for university and Further Education and Training (FET) graduates desperate for practical experience. Thirdly, despite the availability of resources, we have yet to use the skills levy system to effectively address our country’s scarce, priority and critical skills needs. When our economy experiences intermittent growth or ‘up times’ (as has been the case for much of the 1990s), it is largely ‘jobless growth’. Conversely, when we experience ‘down times’ (as has been the case for the past few years), the result is typically, a ‘jobs blood-bath’. People are

54 editorial SETA-article 1_option 2.indd 2

2013/08/26 3:07 PM

discarded as they cannot be utilised for any other purpose than the jobs for which they were employed. Consequently, we have a huge and growing army of unemployed young people. The skills levy system, when operating optimally and effectively, should ideally provide answers to most of the privations noted here. The critical challenge is to fix the system in such a way that it is responsive to the crying needs of our economy and its growth prospects. I suggest that some of our problems stem from deeply entrenched vested interests, which we need to confront variously and collectively. Just as we have to close ranks in defeating the cancer of corruption eating away at the very fabric of our country, so too, should we attend to the deficiencies afflicting our skills development and training system. When the Skills Development Act of 1998 brought the skills system into existence, the idea was that employers (and by extension, industry training needs) would drive the process. There were safeguards, organised labour and government had a big say, but essentially the employers’ needs, in terms of skills, were what drove the system. When research was done, employers were asked what their needs were, and when occupational qualifications were developed employers were involved in developing learning outcomes. It was employers who would employ those who were trained and they would willingly do this, because they had shaped the vision and strategy of the system. The expectation was that employers would advise us not only of current skills needs in their various industries, but would alert us to invest intelligently in the production of future skills needs in their respective industries. Efficiently and effectively deployed, the system was meant to obviate our current problems with

2013/08/27 11:53 AM

critical, scarce and priority skills. Unfortunately, few employers today would recognise that as being the system that they have experienced. In fact, many would not even remember that as being the intention of the system, it is so far removed from their experience. Why is this the case? From the mid-1990s, a number of very astute business people saw the potential of the skills system to make a big profit. Many of these role players came into the skills system structures (Sector Education and Training Authorities, and the National Skills Authority) and shaped things to enable them to maximise their profits. Over time, these business people convinced SETAs that employers were not capable of driving skills development, as they were otherwise engaged. They argued for intermediaries to be used between employers and their SETAs. Some examples include: • Skills Development Facilitators – entrepreneurs who obtain grants from the SETA for an employer and take a cut for their efforts. • Labour brokers who take on both the employer and provider role, saving the SETA from having contact with either employers or providers, and taking a cut to do this. There is now effectively a whole ‘buffer system’ between the employers and their SETAs, which many employers are probably happy to pay for, but which alienates them from the system designed to meet their needs. Crucially, however, the alienation of actual employers from the system (in favour of various intermediaries) has resulted in the complete corruption and vulgarisation of the inner kernel of the skills levy system: skills production in response to current and future skills and growth needs of the economy, harmonising supply and demand. Instead of using the funds to respond to industry skills needs, our intermediaries have, in the main, sought to use the funds to support programmes that they were

qualified to offer. In this scenario, considerations of growth, production of relevant skills and economic needs were pushed sideways, in favour of profit-making. Somehow, we have allowed those who supply education and training or associated project management services to drive the system. Employer demand and industry needs are no longer what drive the system. What the Minister and the department is now trying to do is put employers involvement with their workers back in the driving seat. The National Skills Development Strategy III has been widely welcomed as a strategy that focuses on the needs of the economy and industry. The revisions in the Skills Development Act have changed the governance structures of SETAs to stop these vested interests controlling how funds are allocated. The December 2012 SETA Grant Regulations set out very strict controls to ensure that 80 percent of funds are directed to meet scarce and critical skills needs identified by employers, and ensuring that SETA grant policies

56 editorial SETA-article 1_option 2.indd 4

2013/08/26 3:10 PM

are transparent and administered fairly. The regulations are not well understood, as some people have focused on percentages paid in grants, rather than the strategic purpose and intended effect. They are, in fact, extremely progressive in content and need to be engaged more thoroughly. On our part, as the Services SETA, we have, since the beginning of this year, been actively engaging our top levy payers to do three things: • Persuade all employers to actively participate with levy system • Guide the direction of disbursement by identifying, in their various industries and sub-sectors, critical, scarce and priority skills. • Counsel honesty and respect of the law in driving the system (there are reasons for this, of course). Naturally, there are reservations about some of the measures being taken, but I am confident that once all parties take an objective and ‘bigger picture’ view of the changes being introduced, sanity will almost always prevail. As soon as industry and employer needs take centre stage in the definition and direction of the system, we’ll be well on our way to defeating what is proving to be our country’s Achilles heel, as far as growth and development is concerned, the lack of relevant and appropriate skills. As important, there needs to be recognition of the scale of our skills problem and the pressing urgency to address it. Unless the private sector partners with government to profile and strengthen the capacity and efficacy of the public post-school system, our country will not be able to respond effectively to the challenge and certainly not with the urgency called for. A good place to start would be to compliment government (FET) Colleges. A decision has been taken to invest billions into improving the capacity of these training sites to respond more effectively to the skills challenge confronting the country. However, without concomitant involvement by the private

SETA-article 1_option 2.indd 5

“I suggest that some of our problems stem from deeply entrenched vested interests.” sector, these efforts are doomed to fail. Learners and lecturers from these colleges require workplace experience, industry support to define curriculum, exposure to best practice and the latest technological innovations in various industries. Now, in the absence of an institutionalised relationship between business and the various colleges, these institutions cannot be responsive, relevant or effective instruments in driving the skills agenda in our country. Such are the challenges confronting all of us in the skills space. Such are the opportunities and responsibilities required to effect the changes needed to fix a deeply damaged system.

Le beau Cap Hair

Photographer, Laurence Savary, has released her latest exhibition, Le beau Cap Hair, a portfolio of photographs that celebrate the beauty of hair. Shot in public spaces in Cape Town, it captures hair in everyday situations as opposed to a salon. Focusing on the beauty of the hair itself and leaving the person’s face out of the image. Laurence Savary, who is originally from France, moved to South Africa in 1994 and seriously started focusing on her photography in 2011. Le beau Cap Hair was exhibited at the African International Hair Extravaganza in Johannesburg on 30th August1st September 2013.

Beads of Hope

Beads of Hope provide an income for many crafts women in rural areas throughout South Africa, by training them to make handmade beaded Angels. Prana Products will forego the usual make-up purse that comes with their offers and replace them with beaded angels, thereby providing aid to the Beads of Hope initiative. “Entrepreneurial women will help change the destiny of this nation”, says Debbie Wolfendale, Managing Director of Prana Products, the Beaute Pacifique Brand Ambassadors. Prana hopes to take this initiative to all the countries that sell Beaute Pacifique. Through the worldwide sale of beaded angels, countless South African poverty stricken families could become self-sustaining.

The Kiehl's SA team, Elvis Blue and 100 volunteers assisted in packing 10 000 meals for the children in Alexandra.

Kiehl’s and Elvis Blue adopts two Crèches in Alexandra

The 4th May turned out to be a humbling experience for the Kiehl’s South Africa Team and Elvis Blue when more than 100 volunteers answered the call to assist in packing meals alongside Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa, in aid of children in Alexandra, Johannesburg. The joint venture between Kiehl’s South Africa and Elvis Blue was formed on the grounds of striving to live the Kiehl’s mantra to make a difference in each and every community in which they operate. An amazing 10 000 of the 15 000 meals packed by Kiehl’s South Africa, Elvis Blue and volunteers including well known personalities such as Lalla Hirayama, Louise Carver, Elma Smit, Angie Khumalo and others, are to be donated to two crèches in Alexandra township, Itumeleng Day Care and Abazanyana Educare. Kiehl’s South Africa and Elvis Blue will feed the approximately 50 children in these two crèches, one meal a day for an entire year, and take part in some infrastructure development projects at the two locations. During this year-long period, the managers of these crèches will be encouraged to work with its sponsors and Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa to improve their own infrastructure, through savings they would have spent on the meals for their pupils. Thanks to radio personality, Grant Nash, an additional 5000 meals were donated and packed on 4 May, bringing the total number of meals packed to 15 000.

Ombre extensions

Explore Ombre tones with Great Lengths winter trends 2013 collection.

Great Lengths 100 percent human hair extensions launch their winter trends 2013 collection. Explore the tone filled fun of Ombre trends: blue concentration with hues of sea green emerges from the lighter blonde set against the face and framed beach blonde fringe. For the less brave at heart, natural hair colour illuminated by opposing light and dark Ombre shades, incorporating an infusion of warm honey tones, which frame the face while maintaining equilibrium with the eyebrows and skin tones. Bold Ombre blonde, brunette fusions and kissed caramel explore the range of self-statement through colour and style.

Winter Workshop

Royal Hairstyles hosted One-Day Winter Holiday Workshops from 22nd-29th June at Works @ Main in Johannesburg. High school students, matriculants and anybody interested in studying hairdressing were invited to attend the series of workshops. To ensure that the environment remained intimate, the workshops were limited to 20 attendees. Pupils attended a relaxing and styling class, heard inspirational stories from leaders within the hairdressing industry and received information on financial assistance programmes such as bursaries and loans. Each attendee also received lunch and a free goody bag from the sponsors, NexSheen Arganics and Isoplus.

1 SUPREME OIL CRÉME MOISTURISING MASK The Mizani Supreme Oil Créme

Moisturising Mask is an intense nourishing treatment that replenishes chemically damaged or colour treated hair, while restoring its natural softness and condition for better manageability when styling. The Silicone-free formula is rich in natural oils such as Rice Bran, Argan and Avocado Oils, and Shea butter, for intense penetration and conditioning. The treatment protects the hair from being dry and brittle and therefore reducing breakage.

2 SPRING LOADED DETANGLING SHAMPOO is part of the newly launched 'The Truth

About Curls' range by Paul Mitchell, which is designed to detangle, fight frizz, define, smooth and hydrate curly hair. The rich lathering, sulphatefree shampoo gently cleanses curls without roughing up the cuticle to fight frizz from the start. Cleaning, detangling and conditioning while moisturising in one step.

3 EVO WATER KILLER two-in-one dry shampoo and styling powder will make your hair feel and smell fresh again. Spray the aerosol formula at the roots to absorb oil and product residue while replacing volume and texture.

4 CURVACEOUS SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER Redken’s new Curvaceous Cream Shampoo gently cleanses all types of curls and waves for moisture, definition and shine. The low lathering, sulphate-free formula maintains hair’s natural oils and provides definition. The creamy, alcohol-free Conditioner provides intense moisture and weightless conditioning. The formula can be rinsed out, left in for additional conditioning and curl definition or used as a finishing lotion. 5 BLACK CHIC AVOCADO RANGE is now available to the salon market. Its signature

ingredient, avocado, gives it excellent nutritional and protective properties for all ethnic hair types. Avocado is rich in vitamins A, B, D and E, which stimulates hair growth, repairs and moisturises dry and damaged hair, and protects against the sun. The light texture of avocado oil allows it to soak in easily without clogging the follicles. A high fat content moisturises and seals the hair, making it less dry and prone to breakage. This makes it ideal for ethnic hair which tends to become dehydrated from relaxing and styling. The range contains relaxers, cleansing products and treatments.

8 FINISH SHINE The Biosense Finish range is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 and

high in Vitamin E, giving healthy levels of hydration while styling. The range reduces free radicals and prevents split ends while controlling frizz and is a natural UV protector. The Shine spray is the final finish to add shine to the hair. Spray 15-20 centimetres away from the hair and allow the formula to settle for maximum shine.

8

“Avocado gives it excellent nutritional and protective properties.” 9 CONTROL ANTI-FRIZZ SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER The Hannon gentle cleansing

9

shampoo for fine, curly and frizzy hair reduces frizz whilst adding volume. It is gentle enough for daily use and suitable for colour and chemically treated hair. The silicone and salt-free formula contains Liposomes to assist with hair loss by stimulating hair re-growth and restoring the hair and scalp’s natural oil, and protein balance. The light weight nourishing conditioner controls, repairs and softens the hair, making it more manageable while maintaining its natural volume and static-free.

10 INTENSE HYDRATING MASK from Moroccanoil offers powerful care for

10

stressed, dry, coloured or chemically treated hair. The five minute revival treatment is comprised of Moroccanoil’s proprietary Argan oil-infused blend, a potent antioxidant complex rich in vitamins and natural elements that fortify the hair, including Vitamin F (Omega 6) and Vitamin A to improve elasticity, Vitamin E to protect against free-radicals and Phenols to shield against environmental stressors. All these ingredients deeply hydrate and condition, while improving hair’s texture, elasticity, shine and manageability. The Intense Hydrating Mask can be used weekly to maintain healthy looking hair. For thick, coarse hair, combine one teaspoon of Moroccanoil Treatment with the mask for added shine and elasticity.

is through their hair. Intensive styling can damage young ethnic hair and scalps, causing the hair to become brittle and the scalp to become tight, itchy and flaky. Caivil introduces their new Teen Star hair care range for ethnic teens. The products are formulated with special ingredients to moisturise and protect the scalp while enhancing the hair’s natural shine. The range includes relaxers to suit coarse or normal hair types, a two-inone Conditioning Shampoo, nourishing Oil Moisturiser in a handy tube, Braid Sheen Spray and Oil Sheen Spray for shine.
