When the decision was made to add an ethnic hair magazine to our family, I was excited to see where the new publication would take us. I knew that the South African hair industry needed a high quality ethnic hair magazine and therefore it would be well received. I also knew that it would be a welcomed challenge for me, a Caucasian red head, to understand the needs and concerns of African hair. However, I had no idea what an impact ESTETICA AFRO would make on the international community. Content from our first two magazines has been published through the international ESTETICA network which is viewed across the world. This proves that our local knowledge and expertise in the ethnic hair industry is in demand and sought after. This year has also produced some exciting events within the afro hair industry. On 11 and 12 August the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg hosted the African International Hair Extravaganza. This event created an amazing platform for industry leaders to launch and introduce new products and showcase upcoming trends. I look forward to seeing more opportunities like this for local hair professionals to get involved in. The Royal Hairstyles academy hosted its first annual Miss Royal Hairstyles Scholarship Pageant, pages 48-49. The company was looking to identify five brand ambassadors to help market its business. This afforded five students the opportunity to further their training and become part of an up and coming brand. My most memorable initiative this year so far and one that I am proud to have witnessed, was the Intercoiffure Education For Life salon hand-over at Christel House in Cape Town. This event paid homage to the generosity and kindness that exists within the industry and can be seen on pages 50-51. Another true inspiration is local radio and television personality, model and style icon, Bonang Matheba. I chatted to Bonang about her success in the entertainment industry and everything to do with fashion on pages 60-63. I am proud to be a part of this dynamic industry, filled with creativity and interesting people. The best part of it all is that I get to share it all with you. Happy reading!

Exhibiting Beauty

Beauty and hair enthusiasts attended this year’s Ethnique Hair & Beauty Show, where key industry professionals showcased new products, services and trends.

E V E N T

T

he annual Ethnique Hair & Beauty Show took place at Maponya Mall in Soweto on 27-29 October 2012. The exhibition is designed to provide a marketing platform for consumers to have access to new hair and beauty products in the market, have an opportunity to engage on a face-to-face basis with hair and beauty product manufacturers and distributors, and introduce new products into the market. The theme for this year was ‘skills development, skills transfer and entrepreneurship development’. The hair industry in South Africa generates over R900-million annually, however, it is a neglected industry because it is not considered a big business. Small enterprises are an important source of job creation, especially among previously disadvantaged groups. This was a statement reiterated during the 2011 budget speech when the Finance Minister highlighted that those businesses that employ fewer than 10 workers account for 68 percent of the private sector employment. Many have dismissed the significance of providing hair salons, beauty spa’s and mechanical workshops with business loans and business support services, arguing that it creates a culture of ‘thinking small’. However, continued support for these small enterprises may empower them to create substantial jobs and have the potential to grow into high-end hair salons, and hair product manufacturers like

Herman Mashabas’ Black Like Me and Jabu Stone. As a result, the National Youth Development Agency provided small business development workshops for hair salon and beauty spa owners and aspiring entrepreneurs on how to start and grow your hair salon business as well as how to access funding. Hair and beauty enthusiasts that attended the two day event were treated to shows, educational talks and prizes. The Complete School of Hair, Beauty and Make-up presented a full one-year beauty scholarship worth R38 000 and a two-year hair and make-up scholarship programme worth R78 000 to two lucky winners at the event. Courtesy of Nexsheen Arganics, internationally renowned hairstylist from the United States, Tamyla McElroy, was present. Tamyla specialises in everything from cutting and colour techniques to the newest innovations in weave and natural hair care. Not only does Tamyla work as a hairstylist, she is also the organiser of one of the largest hair competitions in the South East United States: Hair Invasion. Her expertise and talent was invaluable to this year’s Ethnique Hair & Beauty Show. Exhibitors included Nexsheen Arganics, Silky Hair, Naturalz ‘N Mo, Xtls Dreadlocks Specialist, Global Pact and many more. The large turnout and attendance was testament to the success of the exhibition and we look forward to new and exciting things at next year’s event.

Brands such as Dr. Miracle’s, Frika, Ruutos Hair and Fabulous Hair Extentions exhibited their latest products at the event.

The M O T I O N S and TRESemmé Sheer Glamour Hair Show set the scene for the opening of SA Fashion Week with a fusion of fashion and beautifully sculpted hair. Some of South Africa’s leading hair stylists, including Nthato Mashishi, Apo Makhale and Xoliswa Katsio, as well as internationally renowned USA hair stylist Ursula Stephen, showcased the latest trend-defining looks. M O T I O N S put hair on a pedestal and allowed it to take centre stage, as women were shown how to get amazing looks in a fun, yet functional way. The dramatic, drop dead and avant-garde hair styles were offset by clothing from leading SA designers including Suzanne Heyns, Vesselina Pentcheza, Sister Bucks, Tiaan Nagel, Rubicon, Clive Rundle and Black Coffee. THE INSIDE SCOOP? While being runway worthy, these hairstyles are easy to re-create if you follow a few simple steps.

BEFORE Before proceeding, read the instructions and warnings carefully as well as the warnings on the outer packaging. Make sure you assemble everything you need for the relaxer service before you begin.

1 1- Part the hair into four sections. Apply a protective gel to ears, hairline and directly to the entire scalp before relaxing. 2- Apply a protective pre-treatment to strands of previously relaxed hair only to avoid over-processing.

1 Before mixing put on the vinyl synthetic gloves provided in the kit. Keep the gloves on until the relaxer is fully rinsed out of the hair. Mix thoroughly for approximately one minute with the mixing stick provided. Mixture of relaxer base and activator should sit for three minutes before applying to hair. IMPORTANT: Do not apply to hair until mixture of relaxer base and activator is completely smooth and without lumps. Mix for approximately one minute. Failure to mix thoroughly may cause scalp irritation, hair damage and or hair loss. Do not over mix.

2

3a- Apply relaxer close to the scalp, but not on the scalp. If applying a touch-up, apply to new growth only. Apply relaxer to the top of the head first (with a comb or applicator brush), since this section is the most resistant and takes the longest to process. Then apply to the front section. Next, apply to back sections.

3a

3b

3b- Apply to the hair line last. This section is the most delicate and needs to be treated with tender-loving care.

Tips for first time relaxers Make sure a strand test is done if this is the first time the person is receiving this brand of relaxer. Strand tests are important because they help you determine the length of time needed to relax the hair. Strand test Cut a small section of hair from the back of the head. Tape one end of the hair strands together. Apply relaxer evenly to test strands only. Follow Timing Chart. If hair has not reached desired straightness after 10 minutes, continue checking every 1-2 minutes until desired straightness is achieved and note the timing as this is the individual’s recommended timing for a full head of hair. Examine strand test section and note timing. Do not exceed the maximum time on the Timing Chart based on the hair texture. E S T E T I C A A F R O | 43

Tips for smoothing Virgin hair: Smooth from roots to end. Do not comb through because combing can cause damage to the hair and scalp. Touch ups: Apply and smooth the relaxer to new growth only. Avoid smoothing throughout hair, which can cause over-processing of previously relaxed hair.

4a- Smoothing is an essential step to the relaxing process. It helps you achieve the desired straightness by evenly distributing the relaxer. Smooth the relaxer using the back of the comb or fingertips. Start smoothing where the relaxer was first applied (top of the head). 4b- Continue throughout the head in the order the relaxer was applied. Make sure that you don’t over exceed your recommended time.

4a 5

4b 6

5- Apply a generous amount of shampoo to the hair and work into a rich lather. If the relaxer is not fully rinsed out of the hair, the lather will have colour in it. Rinse, repeat shampoos until lather is white, which indicates that relaxer is fully rinsed out of the hair. Towel-dry the hair. 6- Next, apply a generous amount of conditioner to the hair. The conditioner helps detangle and moisturise hair, resulting in shiny and more manageable hair. Place a conditioning cap on the head and sit under a dryer for 10-15 minutes.

7- Blow-drying is an easy way to dry the hair, however it can cause breakage or damage to the hair, if it’s not done properly. Use a heat protection spray or lotion to protect the hair from heat, add shine and soften the hair. Use a hooded dryer (warm temperature) or air-drying, dry hair 85-90 percent prior to blow-drying. This will minimise the amount of heat needed. Air drying is another way to dry the hair. Leave hair out and allow to air dry.

7

8

8- Style as desired. Timing Chart Set the timer for the recommended time using the Timing Chart below: Hair Texture Fine Medium Resistant

Maximum Time 10-12 minutes 13-15 minutes 15-18 minutes

Timing Chart is not applicable when relaxer is only applied to edges of hair.

Royal Pageant Young hopefuls from all around Jozi attended the first Annual Royal Hairstyles Scholarship Pageant.

R

oyal Hairstyles hosted its first annual Miss Royal Hairstyles Scholarship Pageant on Thursday, September 6 at Shikisha Bar, Johannesburg. The company was looking to identify five brand ambassadors to help market its business during career expos, photo shoots, hair exhibitions and other marketing initiatives. Contestants were required to be enrolled in an accredited Gauteng-based South African college or university and should have at least one year of tertiary studies left to complete. Danisile Raphiri, Karyn Joala, Litaletu Zidepa, Ngaatendweishe Murombedzi and Zanele Dondolo were all named brand ambassadors. Danisile Raphiri was crowned Miss Royal Hairstyles, while Litaletu Zipeda and Ngaatendweishe Murombedzi were named, first and second princess, respectfully. The top five contestants will all receive free treatments from the salon for a year and the top three contestants received scholarships to help pay for their school fees. Danisile received R5 000, Litaletu R2 500 and Ngaatendweishe R1 000

towards their scholarships. Royal Hairstyles brought in two of their celebrity brand ambassadors, DJ Zinhle and Jacqui Carpede from Jamali to help judge the pageant. Beyond the practical goal of identifying a group of ladies who can represent the brand in the community, Royal Hairstyles wants to use events like its pageant to help create excitement and intrigue within the hairdressing industry. “Hairdressing is not considered a prestigious field within South Africa right now,” says Royal Hairstyles Co-Founder Kenneth Mokgosi. “Hosting an event where we can bring in the likes of DJ Zinhle, DJ ZanD and Jacqui from Jamali helps to change that perception.” Recognising that most pageants can be repetitive and monotonous, Royal Hairstyles turned the contest into a lively and fun evening. With this in mind DJ’s, such as headline act DJ Zinhle, performed throughout the night to keep the energy high. The 150 guests were also treated to performances from Phatdgo, Stephie and Anga Makubalo, who plays MJ in the local soapie Generations.

Education

For Life The hairdressing industry generously combines their talent, resources and energy to make an untouchable dream a reality.

O

n 6 September 2012, Intercoiffure’s upliftment programme, Education For Life, handed over their first sponsored hair salon at Christel House in Ottery. Key hairdressing figures were present to witness the monumental event. Intercoiffure is a group of prestige hairstylists who belong to an elite international organisation that aims to inspire and uplift the hairdressing industry. Intercoiffure has a social responsibility called ‘Education For Life’ which teaches underprivileged children hairdressing skills and strongly believe in the motto “if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, if you teach a man how to fish you feed him for a lifetime”. President of Intercoiffure South Africa, Jean Witte, Vice President Ezra Isaacs and Treasurer Rolf Losken, were requested by the Intercoiffure International team to implement a training salon within a school in South Africa. After much deliberation Christel House in Ottery, Cape Town, was chosen. Christel House builds and operates learning centers in impoverished neighborhoods with the goal of creating sustainable social and educational impact. Their holistic approach includes: quality education, nutritious meals, regular healthcare, life skills training, character development and work-study opportunities, as well as empowerment programmes for parents and community members. At Christel House, children are taught the importance of caring, sharing and making a difference. As a result, the positive lessons learnt by the children at Christel House are carried home, to impact the families and communities they serve. Twelve students were chosen to partake in the first training schedule which was held in the board room at Christel House. Eventually a room was designated and transformed into a fully equipped salon. This transformation was made possible by the immense generosity and funds donated by numerous sponsors.

E V E N T

Maria Gough, owner of Pasquale hair salon in Johannesburg has experienced great success over the years and her salon recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Maria hosted an amazing and successful event which managed to raise R115 000. All the proceeds were donated to the salon at Christel House. Other sponsors such as Modern Hairdressing Supplies, Tondeo and Motions, donated equipment, dolls heads, surprise gifts for the students and money which all made this unbelievable dream a reality. Ezra Issacs fittingly quoted George Carlin; “life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away. This is one of those moments. ESTETICA AFRO would like to thank everyone that helped make this opportunity possible and we look forward to getting involved in future endeavors.

Care Heidi Flax, Education and Product Development Manager at SoftsheenCarson Dark and Lovely, shares her tips on relaxing colour treated hair and colour maintenance.

hair care.indd 2

C

aution is recommended when relaxing colour treated hair. We recommend relaxing at least two weeks after your colour. We definitely do not recommend colouring and relaxing on the same day. The reason for this is that when you relax hair, the relaxer formula which is alkaline causes the hair to swell. Follow with a neutralising shampoo to bring the hair swelling back down again. The hair should be left for two weeks to ‘settle’ into its new relaxed configuration. Colouring immediately on the day of a relaxer will result in a possible over saturation of colour, where too much is absorbed, which will appear too dark and risk a disappointing result. If your hair is colour treated and you wish to swim, be sure to protect your hair. The best advice is to wear a swimming cap. Should you not be able to, be sure to rinse

your hair with freshwater to rid any swimming pool or sea water as soon as you can. Dry your hair as soon as possible. Keeping hair wet for hours on end disturbs the colour pigment. Once you are done with your beach/pool visit, its best to shampoo the hair with a hydrating/moisturising shampoo which will seal moisture into the hair, and leave the hair silky and full of body. For a treat, follow with a deep nourishing conditioner to revitalise and moisturise relaxed, colour treated or heat traumatised hair. When colouring your hair, it is an absolute must to deep treat your hair on a regular basis, at least every other week to moisturise the hair and protect against split ends. If you are planning to colour your hair at home, we strongly recommend that you do a skin sensitivity test. The instructions on how to do this can be found inside the box. In brief, what you do is

mix a tiny amount of the colour you are intending to use and apply a small amount with a cotton bud at the back of the ear. Allow to dry and reapply. Leave for 48 hours to see if there is any reaction. Burning, itching, redness or irritation, indicate an adverse reaction. If there is no reaction, proceed with the application according to the package insert instructions. If you wish to check the colour result prior to doing the full application, you can do a strand test on a strand the diameter of a piece of straw in an unobtrusive area, like at the back of the head. Remember to proceed as you would if you were doing the full head.

hair care.indd 4

Defining types of colour Temporary hair colour: usually lasts

from shampoo to shampoo and is deposited only on the outside of the hair.

Semi-permanent hair colour:

usually lasts from 4–8 shampoos (depending on how they are processed) have no ammonia or peroxide. They can blend in grey and may become permanent on previously permed or coloured hair. Demi-permanent hair colour:

usually does not contain ammonia and uses a low volume developer generally under 10 volume to help activate the colour. They cannot lighten hair. They can stain the hair if there is a porosity issue and not be removed by shampooing especially on permed or previously

coloured hair depending on how they are processed. Permanent hair colour: changes the

natural colour of the hair and can either lighten or darken the natural hair colour. It contains ammonia and is mixed with hydrogen peroxide to activate it and to develop the colour inside the hair. Therefore it will grow out rather than shampoo out. If you have selected a colour that is very different to your natural hair colour, you will start to notice the natural hair emerging after about three to four weeks. You may do a touch up application every four to six weeks. Be sure to develop on the new growth area first, and to only apply the product through the already colour treated hair for five minutes if the colour fade is minimal, and 10 minutes if the colour fade is more extreme.

W

hile textured and relaxed hair is different, the essentials of good care are the same. Textured hair can be quite fragile and relaxed hair is prone to breakage. The best way to address these challenges are to keep your hair conditioned and moisturised.

Conditioning

Please don’t underestimate conditioning. Conditioners work hard to give you healthy strands, detangle the hair and improve manageability, but it also helps make your hair shiny and soft. There are three types of conditioners: instant, leave-in and deep conditioners. 1. Regular or instant conditioners are rinse out conditioners that you apply after you’ve shampooed your hair. They are available with a variety of benefits such as moisturising, strengthening, smoothing, volumising, colourprotecting, etc. and often have a rich, creamy texture. 2. Leave-in conditioners can be applied after a shampoo but can also be used alone. Like their name indicates, these formulas should be applied and left in the hair. With textures that range from watery to lotion-like, they usually have a thinner/ less viscous consistency than instant conditioners. These formulas are made to absorb into the hair. 3. Deep conditioners are formulated with smaller molecules so they penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. Optimal results are delivered with heat. Be prepared to sit under a heat cap or dryer for 10-15 minutes. Regardless of the type, conditioners are specially formulated to restore your hair to a healthy state. Look for conditioners with proteins, like wheat and silk protein, to help strengthen the hair. Also, look for

Simply said, moisture is water. The best way to moisturise hair is to use water-based products. Look for moisturisers with Aloe Vera, which help to add moisture to hair, emollients like Olive Oil, to reduce moisture loss, and natural humectants like Jojoba, to attract water to the hair. Dr. Miracle’s Daily AntiBreakage Strengthening Crème is loaded with these goodies and more.

TIPS: Even if you use oil regularly, make sure to complement your routine with a daily dose of a lightweight moisturising lotion or creme. While natural oils, like Avocado Oil, are great for hair because they leave hair shiny and help to promote healthy hair growth, your hair needs moisture. As long as you’re using light, fast-absorbing formulas, this combination will not weigh your hair down. You’ll see the difference in the health of your hair. Now, you’re armed with the necessities for healthy, strong hair. Visit our website for more information: www.drmiracles.com conditioners that are enriched with natural oils to help retain moisture. Ones with Coconut Oil, like Curl Care by Dr. Miracle’s Nourishing Conditioner, help strengthen and prevent damage as they help seal in moisture.

TIP: Even if you use a leave-in or instant conditioner regularly, make sure to deep condition, using a heat cap or sitting under a dryer, at least once a month. Your hair deserves the extra pampering. Dr. Miracle’s Deep Conditioning Treatment Packette is a great choice. Its blended with Jojoba Oil and Vitamins A and E to help end breakage and dry scalp. Moisturising

Just like we need water for healthy skin and optimal health, your hair also needs moisture to stay healthy. Moisturising prevents hair from becoming dry and brittle and improves its elasticity.

Look for conditioners that are enriched with natural oils to help retain moisture. E S T E T I C A A F R O | 57

Jabula employs qualified stylists to assist in store and provide styling for hair pieces. Our stylists have been creating magic with hair for years! What differentiates Jabula from its competitors?

I think what differentiates our brand from most of our competitors is that we are an owner driven company, where every detail is scrutinised and every process, from sourcing to the final delivery, is carefully considered. Delivering on quality is our passion and the driving force behind our team who live and breathe ‘Jabula’. There is no place for mediocrity. Currently, Jabula has five stores throughout Cape Town, where are they situated?

We have five stores all in the Cape Town region; four stores are in the Golden Acre, and one store is in Bellville in Middestad Mall. Any plans of expanding in the future?

There are definitely plans to expand next year, with the intention to create a national boutique brand where our hair pieces and wigs are not found everywhere, but

Radio and television personality, model, entrepreneur and style icon, Bonang Matheba is fast becoming one of the biggest stars in South Africa. The highly successful 25 year old is a regular on our TV screens and has produced her own clothing and handbag line. ESTETICA AFRO gets a glimpse into the glamorous, yet busy life, of ‘Queen B’.

This month sees you co-producing and hosting your own television show. What can we look forward to on the show?

All things glamorous and true to form what I am known for. I can’t talk about it at the moment, but it’s going to be an amazing production. Next year February will see you starring in the documentary Intersexions Season 2 which explores how HIV moves through the human sexual network. The show

poses the question ‘do you know who your lover has slept with?’. What can we expect from the second season and what was it like being part of a production which voices such a relevant issue in our country?

You can still expect hard hitting acting, an amazing storyline and a gripping season all together. It’s the very first time on set for me as an actress, and what a life changing debut. Intersexions is an award winning documentary and I’m seriously blessed to be a part of it. You have recently launched your own online reality show called B*Dazzled which sees you inviting fans into your glamorous life. Most recently you interviewed stylist and fashion guru George Kotsiopoulos from the TV show Fashion Police. Are you a fan of the show and what was it like meeting George?

I am a huge fan of fashion in general. Therefore, I follow and love people who work in fashion. George was amazing, a real sweetheart and very down to earth.

I N T E R V I E W

You marked your start in fashion in 2008 with you’re sold out Just B clothing range in collaboration with the Legit brand. How did this union come about?

Legit did an online poll where people could vote for their favourite girl personality of 2008. My name came out tops and Legit contacted me. The rest is history. Aside from your clothing brand you also design your own range of handbags called Baby Star. Is this evidence of your secret fashion fetish?

I found it difficult to come across sexy and trendy handbags according to my taste and ones that I would love to carry and be seen with. I definitely have a fetish for handbags, shoes and sunglasses, and the decision to design bags felt very natural. What is it like to be the face of such a talented local designer such as Gert Johan Coetzee?

It means being a muse to a very talented designer. Luckily I do fashion effortlessly and so does Gert, which makes it a great partnership. It means getting dressed by the best designer in the country, but it also puts lots of pressure on me to always be on top of my game. In 2011, you received the SA Style Award for the ‘Most Stylish Media Personality’. Does dressing yourself for events come naturally to you or do you receive styling assistance?

I’ve always styled myself for events and all my TV appearances. I’ve never had or needed a stylist. I’ve always loved clothes from a very young age and luckily I come from a family of very stylish women. What is your attitude towards fashion and how would you describe your personal style?

My personal style changes depending on my mood. It moves from high street chic (London girl style) to a more glamorous look. Fashion is fun and dynamic.

What fashion trend are you looking forward to wearing this summer?

As we all know neon’s and pastels are major at the moment and I like to incorporate them into my wardrobe. I also love prints. Winter 2013 is going to be tons of fun for me as fashion goes gothic. I can’t wait! Your hair is always immaculately presented. How do you maintain your hair and what styling products do you use?

I am a brand ambassasor for Diva Divine and my talented hairstylist David takes care of all my needs using their extentions and Ladine products. I am a Cancerian and governed by my emotions, therefore my hairstyles depend entirely on my mood. However my hair is always in braids or a weave which is easier for me to manage. What beauty products can you not live without?

My foundation, liquid eyeliner, matt lipstick and my gold deposit from MAC. Name the five things you never leave the house without?

My cellphone, purse, make-up bag, asthma pump and laptop.
