Samira Rathod Samira graduated from the Sir. J. J. College of Architecture, Mumbai in 1986 and soon after completed her Master in Architecture from the University of Illinois, Urbana – Champaign in 1988. While in the States she worked on several projects under Don Wald and Associates based in California, including personal projects of Clint Eastwood. Upon her return to India, she worked with Ratan Batliboi for several years before starting her own partnership firm RLC in 1995. In 1996 she stepped into the limelight with her solo furniture exhibit ‘Liasons de Formes’. Thereafter in 2000, she founded her solo practice Samira Rathod Design Associates, which has grown over the years. She was involved in furniture design under Transforme Designs until 2003. Her passion for writing, theorizing and discussing architecture led her to be the editor and creator of SPADE and founder and director of SPADE INDIA RESEARCH CELL which candidly deliberates, investigates and researches the condition and impact of design in India. Samira believes in cultivating talent and a strong sense of design in today’s youth and is a adjunct faculty member at the Kamla Raheja Institue of Architecture in Mumbai and has been invited to be a part of juries and panels all over the country and abroad.

About SRDA SRDA is a firm that investigates design with a passionate and critical eye grounded in modesty and a thirst for imaginative adventures. At SRDA every project is treated with fervor for exploration and innovation and tested for relevance in physical and social contexts against the land which will cradle it and against the man it is meant for. SRDA subscribes to the philosophy of the architecture of BLIRS - beautiful, local, indigenous, recycle and small. Poetry draws the distinction between a piece of architecture and a mere building. Local indigenous peoples, their cultivated techniques and traditions and their ancient mastery of material tectonics are core to the execution and inspiration of projects at SRDA. And more importantly design must be cognizant of the differentiation between needs and wants, which it must addressed in the most responsible way, carefully monitoring its violence on the planet.

SHARANYA RESIDENCE Client : Arjun Handa Location : Ahmedabad, Gujarat The brief for the project was to design a home over an already existing and functioning house. The house was originally designed by Ar. Bimal Patel. Since it was to be a new home that is to be designed on the existing roof, it was a challenge to design the connection between the old with the new structure making it a design philosophy. There’s a beautiful exporation of roofs in the design carrying a thought of the sloping roofs of the old house merging coherntly with the modern roofs of the new home. Thus creating an overall visually and functionally synced skyline.

A study model was to be made in order to study aspects of the architectural design and communicate design ideas. Making the model of new house and the renovation of old house along with bridges and connections was the task assigned to me. There was an already existing teak wood model of the old house and I planned to used balsa as a new material in order to represent the addition and new house over the old model. This exercise helped me to analyse the scale of the built forms and heirarchy of volumes.

In continuation to the block study model I was also asked to make a detailed model of the new house in order to study the interaction of volumes, different viewpoints, and concepts of lighting and fenestations in the exterior as well as in the interior spaces during the design process. Later on appreciating the precision and neatness in the model it was also used in explaining its complicated and unusual designs of the house to the client as well as various consulatnts involved in the project.

During the model making process I learnt how the usage of basic design elements like skylight, staircase, levels, openings if used startegically can make beautiful and sensibe builtforms and spaces.

Apart from making models I also made some critical sections in order to define a more clear understanding for the structure and other sevices like Plumbing and HVAC.

A Sketch up model showing the materiality used in the building. The mode was detailed including all the aspects of building construction (beams, columns, false ceiling, etc). This model helped in understanding the building in terms of its junctions between the new and the existing structure also to have a clear under of the interior spaces and praportions.

COIMBATORE RESIDENCE Client : Anand Purshotaman Location : Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu Housed is in the Traditional city of Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore and understanding the client’s cultural backgound the design of the house was insipred by the linearity and various elements of Traditional Tamil Nadu house forms known as ‘Agraharams’. The Beauty of the house lies in its linearity and the pavilions the houses is divided in.

A study model was to be made in order to study aspects of the architectural design and the proportion of built forms. This exercise helped me to understand the role of climate, scale of the built forms and heirarcy of volumes and the overall composition. This model also helped in Samira ma’am in taking alot of design decisions.

VILLA MASTER PLAN Client : Hitesh Kawad Location : Chennai, Tamil Nadu The brief of the project was to design a larger residential society in Tamil Nadu composing of villas and Town Houses. The archiect wanted to keep the building form simple with decent facade with thoughtful composition of the volumes and fenestrations.

I made four diffrent option of the exterior facade by changing the size and placement of the opening with respect to internal space of the building. The usage of different material like brick, concrete, metal was explored and the effect it creates in the larger urban language as a fabric was reconised through this exercise.

KAUNAS CONCERT CENTER Competition Location : Kaunas, Lithuania A FROZEN SYMPHONY Taking inspiration from the concert hall’s patron, Čiurlionis’s paintings, and the entire structure is an architectural articulation of a fjord, frozen in the middle of a symphonic movement as – ‘Frozen Music’. The eastern approach, from the old city, is an inspired rendition of Čiurlionis’s painted tree-scapes, which permeates the entire building, in a strategic spine such that it begs the question; is the building nestled inside a forest or is the forest emerging from the glacier.

CHENNAI SCHOOL Client : Hitesh Kawad Location : Chennai, Tamil Nadu Internal spaces have their own experiences and memories which gets formed as a child, espacially in an institution like a school. The SPR School in Chennai wants these experiences to be the best part of a child’s schooling. Spaces between spaces such as courtyards, verandahs, ramps, bridges, alcoves etc acts as these interstitial spaces and forms “vignettes of experiences”.

JAIPUR INSTALLATION JKK Additional Director General Location : Jawhar Kala Kedra, Jaipur, Rajasthan Carving a niche, this installation redefines the purpose of the wall becomes a habitable place. The scale and the function analyse the requirments of the individual taking a cue from the innovation of requirments that one often see’s in the homes of urban squatter communities. The installation is an experiment in anthropometric norms textures, and spatial experience of ones habitat. The wall will be created using construction waste, as well as recycled wood and material acquired from dismantled homes.

SUMMARY Concluding this six months spent here at SRDA, I would like to say that it was a great opportunity for me working as an intern here and be the part of this office. I’d like to mention some of from good things learnt here at SRDA: first of all, the work ethics and management system here is well drafted and rigorously followed by each and every team member thus leading to smooth and efficient outputs. The work environment was always encouraging me to evolve beyond my limits. Frequent discussions with Samira Ma’am and support from senior architects and colleagues helped me out a lot. Ma’am even used to share her work experience and travelogues with us. Apart from this, making physical models to perceive the spaces, exploring various materials and composing the ideas to represent in a better manner were the good things I learnt here. Adding to all the other factors I also learnt working in an efficiently and making the most os the time i was assingned to finish the given task. Footnote: The days spent here at SRDA and in Mumbai city taught me a lot apart from architecture and the mainstream of academics. It was an experience worth living it.
