Our building strives to become an embodiment of the present era. This is done through the intersection of the two bars - representing the dichotomy and polarization of history and its figures. This is then furthered through transparency and illusion – what is visible, and what is being framed as visible?

While the building operates through two crossed bars, the site operates on the difference between wandering and discovering. The compressed open space below the floating box allows free movement albeit on a broken landscape that forces perspectives of historical figures. The landscape to the north exists as a labyrinth forcing discovery as one can turn the corner and find a figure.

Ground Floor + Site Plan

Along Broad Street in Franklinton, West of the Scioto River and downtown Columbus, passing pedestrians are invited into a compressed space, intrigued by statues of polarizing historical figures washed in light from the occuli above. Wandering across an ever-changing landscape, goers are always viewing the figures from uncomfortable perspectives. Situated at the center of the space is the relocated, Edoardo Alfieri’s Christopher Columbus Staute. Too tall for the space and hidden half out of view, there is no full view of Columbus that is not extreme.

3rd Floor Pocket Gallery / Gathering Area + 3rd Level Secured Archive 11

View from the exterior ramp over the Labyrinth statue garden, home to less polarizing, important historical figures. The Labyrinth promotes discovery, turning the corner to find and learn about the figures.

View inside the Main Gallery. What appear as occuli from the space below that funnel light down, also diffuse light into the gallery. The glass is frosted, blurring visibility to view Columbus as his statue extends up the cone into the space. Here he can only be viewed clearly through a sliver of transparency in the frosted glass.

View inside the Main Gallery after ascending the first legs of the ramp. The ramp to the left takes visitors to the 3rd, Roof Garden, and 4th Levels.

Roof Garden Level. Visitors can look down through the occuli on the figures below, again via extreme perspectives
