WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING
Boris Giltburg took first prize at the 2013 Queen Elisabeth Competition, having won second prize at the Rubinstein in 2011 and top prize at Santander back in 2002, and subsequently appearing across the globe. Notable débuts have included a South American tour in 2002 (and every season since), with the Israel Philharmonic in 2005, the Indianapolis Symphony in 2007, a tour of China in 2007, and at the BBC Proms in London in 2010. He has appeared with Marin Alsop, Martyn Brabbins, Edo de Waart, Christoph von Dohnányi, Philippe Entremont, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Neeme Järvi, Kirill Karabits, Emmanuel Krivine, Hannu Lintu, Vasily Petrenko, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Tugan Sokhiev and Yan Pascal Tortelier, among others. In 2014 he began a long-term recording plan with Naxos.
Shostakovich’s two Piano Concertos span a period of almost thirty years. The youthful First Piano Concerto is a masterful example of eclecticism, its inscrutable humour and seriousness allied to virtuoso writing enhanced by the rôle for solo trumpet. Written as a birthday present for his son Maxim, the Second Piano Concerto is light-spirited with a hauntingly beautiful slow movement. With the permission of the composer’s family, Boris Giltburg has arranged the exceptionally dark, deeply personal and powerful String Quartet No. 8, thereby establishing a major Shostakovich solo piano composition. Key Features
• Boris Giltburg is one of today’s most exciting young pianists, lauded for his ‘massive and engulfing technique, supporting interpretations that glow with warmth and poetic commitment.’ (Gramophone) • His Rachmaninov piano disc for Naxos was a Gramophone Recording of the Month, and a BBC Music Magazine Instrumental Choice. The American Record Guide wrote of his playing that he “plays these pieces better than I can ever remember having heard them. I have never heard a more glorious combination of power and sensitivity.”
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra © Mark McNulty
• Conductor Vasily Petrenko’s complete cycle of the Shostakovich symphonies with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra has won magnificent accolades. Of Volume 14 (8.573132) Gramophone wrote; with bold sound and detailed booklet-notes this would be a thrilling investment at any price.” It was also a MusicWeb International Recording of the Year, and Sunday Times Album of the Week, and ClassicsToday.com wrote of it “This is a sensational performance, the first that truly vies with the classic Rostropovich/Vishnevskaya/Reshetin for supremacy.”
© Mark McNulty
• This disc includes the first recording of pianist Boris Giltburg’s transcriptions for solo piano of the Eighth String Quartet and the Waltz from the Second Quartet. Giltburg has received permission from the Shostakovich family to present these transcriptions.

Marin Alsop and Leonard Bernstein
Leonard BERNSTEIN (1918–1990)
Marin Alsop is an inspiring and powerful voice in the international music scene. She made history with her appointment as the 12th music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO). Her success as the BSO’s music director has garnered national and international attention for her innovative programming and artistry. Alsop took up the post of principal conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in 2012, and became music director in July 2013. In September 2013, she made history as the first female conductor of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms in London – an honor she repeated in 2015.

Leonard Bernstein’s legendary 1943 Carnegie Hall conducting début brought his name to national attention, and the event was followed a few months later by the triumphant reception of his Symphony No. 1 ‘Jeremiah.’ This major symphonic statement explores a crisis in faith and employs Jewish liturgical sources, its final movement, Lamentation, being an anguished cry at the destruction of Jerusalem. Sharing the theme of loss of faith, Symphony No. 2 ‘The Age of Anxiety’ takes W.H. Auden’s poem of the same name and follows its four characters in their spiritual journey to hard-won triumph. Bernstein’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Kaddish’ can be heard on Naxos 8.559742. Key Features:
• Leonard Bernstein’s own recording of the symphonies (as well as other works), with the New York Philharmonic, are available in a seven-disc collection released by Sony Classical in 2012 (886978808622).

• Soloists on our recording are world-famous pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Caro who has sung at the Met in New York and at Chicago Opera Theatre.

Appointed Music Director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra in 2001, Hans Graf concluded his tenure in May 2013 and is the longest serving Music Director in the orchestra’s history. His extensive discography includes the complete symphonies of Mozart and Schubert, the première recording of Zemlinsky’s opera Es war einmal and the complete orchestral works of Dutilleux. He has been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur by the French government for championing French music around the world as well as the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria.
Based on real events and playwright Georg Büchner’s starkly vehement text, Alban Berg’s tragic opera Wozzeck is an epochmaking work, in stark contrast to the previous high romantic ideals of the genre, that led Schoenberg to exclaim “now that’s what I call an opera!” Immensely powerful and heartbreakingly moving as a drama, Wozzeck explores the victimisation, despair and madness of a central character who has no place in society, its deeply humane message and sublimely innovative score firmly establishing it as a 20th-century masterpiece. Key Features:

• This significant release follows on from successful recordings with the Houston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hans Graf – making their Naxos debut in 2009 with Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony and Berg’s Three Pieces (8.572048). Our Wozzeck soloist for this earlier release was admired by Gramophone: “Roman Trekel’s experience in big operatic roles, not least Wagner, makes him an excellent choice for the four malevoice movements: he has the presence and range to belong in the company of the starriest-baritones, from Dietrich FischerDieskau to Bryn Terfel.”
• Baritone Roman Trekel has won several international singing competitions. His contributions to the Naxos Schubert Lied Edition have been much admired, with a Winterreise (Vol. 1, 8.554471) that is “moving and beautifully sung” (San Jose Mercury News) and ClassicsToday.com considering that this recording “stands with the best on disc.”
• The cast for this production of Wozzeck is notable for its strength and depth. Soprano Anne Schwanewilms (Marie) was proclaimed by London’s Time Out as “one of the world’s finest interpreters of late romantic opera and song.” Internationally acclaimed tenor Marc Molomot (Captain) is highly regarded as “an excellent actor-singer” (Le Monde), and star bass-baritone Nathan Berg (Doctor) received acclaim for his role as the sea captain in Der Fliegende Holländer from The Salt Lake Tribune: “Berg’s vocally secure performance suggested not only the world-weariness that would come from decades, if not centuries, roaming the seas, but also a depth of poise and gravity that made even his quietest utterances compelling.”

He also maintains a rigorous schedule of guest conducting throughout the world and is active as a composer, author, and educator. Slatkin’s more than a hundred recordings have received seven GRAMMY® awards and 64 nominations. Composed for Sergey Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, Ravel’s ‘symphonie chorégraphique’ Daphnis et Chloé is based on a classical Greco-Roman love story set on the island of Lesbos. He described the work as ‘a vast musical fresco’, and with its extraordinarily passionate music, lush harmonies and orchestration, is considered both his masterpiece and the epitome of Impressionism in music. Orchestrated from the third of his Miroirs for piano, Ravel’s Une barque sur l’océan is an evocative portrayal of the ever-changing moods of the sea. Key Features
• Volume 1 of this series (8.5728870) was greeted positively by Gramophone: “The atmosphere is established not merely with confidence but with freshness as well. The Shéhérazade overture finds a delicate balance between Ravel’s exoticism, lyricism and gaiety, Slatkin shaping the music with a potent mix of the sensuous, sinuous, sinister and spirited. If this disc heralds a comprehensive Ravel series, it augurs well.” BBC Music Magazine wrote that “Leonard Slatkin draws a vivid sound from the Lyon players, with a wide range of dynamics and colours.”

• Volume 2 (8.572888) was again welcomed by Gramophone: “As before the American [Slatkin] shows real empathy with this magical repertoire, and he draws playing of uncommon composure and contagious application from his scrupulously prepared Lyons band… Producer/engineer Tim Handley has struck a most judicious balance and his sound is commendably truthful and wide-ranging. Wonderful value at Naxos’s price. Bring on the next instalment.”

Complete Overtures Prague Sinfonia Orchestra Christian Benda
Rossini’s musical wit and zest for comic characterisation have enriched the operatic repertoire immeasurably, and his overtures distil these qualities into works of colourful orchestration, bravura and charm. From his most popular, such as La scala di seta (The Silken Ladder) and La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie), to the rarity Matilde of Shabran, the full force of Rossini’s dramatic power is revealed in these masterpieces of invention. Each of the four discs in this set has received outstanding international acclaim, with Volume 2 described as “an unalloyed winner” by ClassicsToday, and the Prague Sinfonia Orchestra’s playing described as “stunning” by American Record Guide (Volume 3).

Christian Benda is chief conductor and artistic director of the Prague Sinfonia Orchestra of the Velvet Revolution with which he has recorded numerous standard classical works, as well as the complete overtures of Schubert and Rossini. Singers such as Renée Fleming, Barbara Hendricks, Cheryl Studer and Simon Estes have appeared under his baton. As a composer, his micro-operas have been created at the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Prague Smetana Hall. In collaboration with the Vienna State Opera he has devised a new introduction to opera for the general public and young people, High-Lights and Micro-Opera, based on Goethe’s colour theory, with the participation of narrator and dancers.
• The only near competitor in the current marketplace is Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields with 26 overtures in a 3-CD box released in 2003 on Philips 000088002. However, Marriner doesn’t include some of the rarities Naxos does and is therefore significantly less extensive in its coverage of the overtures.

THE GUERRA MANUSCRIPT, Vol. 4 17th Century Secular Spanish Vocal Music

Key Features
• This is the first complete recording of the Guerra manuscript, which is now on its fourth volume.
© Miguel Angel Fernandez
The Guerra Manuscript, named after its copyist José Miguel de Guerra y Villegas, is a repository of one hundred of the greatest secular songs (tonos humanos) circulating in the Madrid court of seventeenth-century Spain. The songs were composed by the leading figures of the Spanish Baroque and include many by the most prestigious of all, José Marín and Juan Hidalgo. Ideally accompanied by one of the principal Spanish baroque instruments, the arpa de dos órdenes (double harp), they explore ideas of love, praise, and beauty. This volume includes perhaps the best-known song of all, Corazón que en prisión.

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING
This programme of four colourful, contrasting but complementary works for small orchestra celebrates the lighter side of four twentieth-century Italian composers, centring on Alfredo Casella’s Divertimento for Fulvia, composed for his young daughter. Casella’s friend Gian Francesco Malipiero wrote Oriente immaginario (Imaginary Orient) for a Futurist play by Achille Ricciardi (1884-1923). Franco Donatoni once called his simply-titled Musica (Music) ‘kind of Schoenberg gone a bit neoclassical’ – but also with a great sense of humour – while Giorgio Federico Ghedini’s Concerto grosso is a twentieth-century tribute to both Bach and Beethoven.

Four great Italian composers with much in common – all came from the country’s northern regions, all were relatively late developers; Casella and Malipiero were great friends; Donatoni’s favourite teacher was Casella’s former protégé Goffredo Petrassi. Perfect opportunity to promote other discs in Naxos’ 20th Century Italian Classics series. For Casella this includes his small scale baroque-influenced works on 8.573005 (Partita) and 8.572416 (Scarlattiana). Ghedini has been well served before on 8.573006 and 8.111325. WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING
Described by The New York Times as ‘driven by a playful, modern sensibility’, the music of Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon blends elegant Gallic transparency with the rhythmical and structural complexity of German musical culture. The result is a very individual and immediately communicative idiom, notable for its colourful orchestration. Arcanes Symphoniques is a musical game, each performance of its brief allegorical movements taking on a different meaning derived from the symbols on Tarot cards. The unusually scored Triptyque and mini-opera Le Songe Salinas use texts by Stéphane Héaume in settings both tragic and sensually exotic.

•
Winner of the Prix culturel vaudois Musique 2014 and the SACEM Grand Prix de la musique symphonique (carrière) 2015, Richard Dubugnon has a profile that would be the envy of any living composer. His work is in demand all over the world, with an impressive list of ongoing commissions including new works for Kathryn Stott and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Philippe Jordan and the Opéra de Paris and performances by Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia, Paavo Järvi and the Orchestre de Paris, Jonathan Nott and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and many more.
•
We last released a recording of Dubugnon’s work way back in 2002 with his Piano Quartet and other chamber works (Naxos 8.555778) which was given a 10/10 score and considered “an easy recommendation for new music fans” by ClassicsToday.com. Under the batons of conductor, pianist and composer Laurent Petitgirard, who has recorded around forty albums, some of which are under the Naxos label, “energetic and profound” young conductor Debora Waldman and “star of the new generation” Fabien Gabel, this release is quite an event to round off this year’s new music recordings, including as it does the world première recordings of Triptyque and Le Songe Salinas.

Catalan Wind Music
OLTRA, M. • GARRETA, J. • MORALEDA, J.L. Barcelona Symphonic Band Salvador Brotons
The three colourful works on this world première recording are a representative sample of 20th century Catalan music, all of them including popular cobla band instruments such as the tible and the tenora with their bright, piercing reeds, and the flabiol flute with its high tones. Manuel Oltra’s music is deeply rooted in Catalan tradition, and L’Alimara is a symphonic poem with medieval echoes. Both Juli Garreta’s Suite empordanesa and Joan Lluís Moraleda’s epic Tirant lo Blanc are considered milestones in Catalonian symphonic music, the latter transporting us to the fights, feasts and chivalric romance of its eponymous hero.
This recording brings together two contemporary Catalan composers inspired by medieval stories, and a substantial classic that combines NeoWagnerian sensibilities with Catalonian musical heritage. With its unique blend of authentic national instruments and conventional orchestral wind sections, the Barcelona Symphonic Band numbers 56 musicians and, under the leadership of Salvador Brotons, showcases premières and performances of works by contemporary composers to the widest possible public. Conductor Salvador Brotons has been music director of the Barcelona Symphonic Band (Banda Municipal de Barcelona, BMB) since 2008, and his own Sixth Symphony (8.573361) performed by the Barcelona Symphonic Band was admired by Fanfare for its “disciplined, colorful performances from… the Banda Municipal de Barcelona, and the sound is pretty spectacular too.” All of the works in this program are recorded here for the first time, throwing new light onto some barely known but precious and rich music from Catalan culture.

Amongst his portfolio of works for piano, Liszt wrote transcriptions and arrangements, some derived from his own scores and some based on the work of others. His own songs, of which he wrote over 80, reveal his particular gifts as a lyric composer, fully reflected in his piano transcriptions. The melancholic Il m’aimait tant! and the beautiful Ich liebe dich are Liszt’s own inspirations whilst patriotic Hungarian pieces such as Szózat and Ungarischer Hymnus (the then newly established Hungarian Anthem) demonstrate his status as a national hero.

Volume 44 in this extensive series of the complete piano music. It’s played by Canadian pianist Joel Hastings who died in May 2016, at the tragically young age of 46. Hastings played Carter Pann’s piano music on 8.559751 of which MusicWeb International wrote: “Feisty, sense-sating music from a terrific talent; superbly played and recorded.” Of Vol 43 Gramophone wrote “[Sergio] Monteiro’s interpretation of Les préludes, heard here in a transcription by Karl Klauser, achieves some of the sweep and atmosphere of the original orchestral version.” Volume 42 (Paganini Studies), performed by Goran Filipec, has won the 2016 Liszt Ferenc International Grand Prix du Disque, citing that Filipec “faithfully follows each of Liszt’s instructions on tempo, dynamics and characters, with a sensitive framing as well – the composer would have been satisfied exactly with such a performance.”

Zorro Rides Again is the third novella featuring Zorro, the Robin Hood of Old California. Reina de los Angeles is being terrorised by a masked swordsman who marks the faces of his victims with Zorro’s trademark Z. But is this the real Zorro? The Governor of California offers a reward for the capture of Don Diego Vega (who is known to have previously been Zorro) dead or alive, while an army – led by the ruthless Captain Rocha – is in hot pursuit of the outlaw. The Trumpet-Major By Thomas Hardy Unabridged Read by Nicholas Rowe
War threatens the rich, green fields of Wessex in Hardy’s historical novel, The Trumpet-Major. The Napoleonic Wars are at their height, and upheaval and uncertainty plague British soil. In the midst of it all the impoverished beauty Anne Garland finds herself at the centre of a love quadrangle. She is torn between the persistent and annoying Festus Derryman, her womanising childhood sweetheart Bob Loveday, and the reliable and thoughtful John Loveday, the eponymous Trumpet-Major. Who will she choose? Hardy’s eighth published novel is a gentle and humorous tale about the confusion and conflict of life. Companion Titles – Thomas Hardy, Author
