LAUIL602 Online Presence
Prior to this module, I already had an Instagram and Facebook page for my dolls and illustrations. I used these quite frequently to upload photos of my work and share achievements/projects. My audience was mostly friends and family who followed my progress. I didn’t realise quite how powerful Instagram could be as a marketing tool and learned through talking to practitioners that a lot of illustrators are ‘discovered’ and actually commissioned through this site. I have put more effort into curating my posts, posting in ‘collections’ of 3 and trying to use hash-tags to get my work seen by a wider audience. This module showed me how I could connect with potential clients and employers through LinkedIn so I have been using this platform to connect with professionals in the industries of stop-motion, television and publishing.

Business Documents
In preparing to apply for jobs after university, I have made a creative CV to send out. I aim to apply for creative jobs, especially within prop making and model making for children’s television and film so I wanted my CV to give a taster of my visual style and tone of voice. The CV contains all the relevant information and is decorated with illustrations which would hopefully make it stand out against more traditional CVs and attract those who are interested in my work. I also made an invoice to send to customers and clients. This could be used for either illustration work or dolls as products.

Promotional Material
Business cards were an obvious choice in marketing material because they are easy and cheap to produce. They are also an item that is expected from all professionals in any industry to be swapped and exchanged for future reference. Alongside this conventional choice, I wanted to make something that was more memorable and relevant to my craft. This is a handmade art doll of myself which would have my name, profession and details on the box and then a copy of my CV inside. This is an unusual choice that would hopefully be remembered and also kept as an art object.

Portfolio
A professional portfolio of my work to be printed A3 on card stock and presented in a PRATT portfolio. This could be sent to companies I would like to apply to work with, such as Mackinnon & Saunders (who don’t advertise jobs but are open to portfolio submissions of work for model makers). The portfolio demonstrates the range of work I have made so far (difference in scale, tone, colours and materials). These are all pieces I am proud of and would be happy to discuss the materials and processes as well as the brief and motivations behind each image. Each double page spread explores a separate project with at least two images of each piece. The portfolio demonstrates my consistent tone of voice and the cover features my contact details should they like what they see.

Website
My website features a full-screen video of me making dolls (taken as part of my COP3 module) which is the first thing you see when you visit the website. This video demonstrates my craft and shows the literal hands of the maker. Including a video of me working at my desk is quite personal and an inviting approach, but it is also a little enigmatic and intriguing as the face of the maker is never shown. The rest of the website scrolls down into the different sections, including a portfolio-style gallery section of images which are enlarged when selected. I have included characters peeping out, which is a fun and unusual addition suitable for a child audience and relevant to my interests in children’s books and entertainment. The website has links to my social media and a contact section with my email address and an easy contact form so people can get in touch.

Dolls House and Miniature Scene Magazine 13.

DollsHouse and Miniature Scene Magazine
I was contacted by Sadie Brown to answer some questions for a feature in DollsHouse and Miniature Scene Magazine. The four-page feature was published in the May issue of the nation’s favourite dollshouse magazine. This was brilliant exposure as the magazine is stocked in WHSmiths stores around the country and has a large readership. Their audience is mostly miniature collectors, dollshouse enthusiasts and amateur crafters so I doubt this would lead to being ‘discovered’ for any jobs or opportunities but it could boost doll sales and online followers.

Newby Hall Exhibition
I was asked to exhibit my work at the beautiful and historic Newby Hall in the Summer before Level 6. I made six A3 illustrations which were framed and sold as bookmarks and cards; exhibited eleven photos of my dolls and had a glass cabinet full of dolls and toadstools for sale. This was an incredible opportunity to exhibit professionally in a solo show and was a brilliant venue because Newby Hall is popular family-friendly destination. My exhibition was in the Grantham Room, where Catherine Rayner has exhibited before and where visitors can sit to eat so would spend time enjoying my work. It was also next door to the Dolls House exhibition (this is how Sadie Brown from DHMSM discovered my work) and opposite from the Teddy Bear House where an original Fozzie Bear, Paddington and SuperTed are housed.

Far From the Shire Exhibition
A friend and fellow illustrator/artist, John Cockshaw, took myself and a friend of mine from school, Guy Brady, under his wing for a collective Tolkien-themed exhibition at Art in the Mill in Knaresborough. I made a selection of Tolkien themed art dolls and these were exhibited alongside international artists in the collective as well as John and Guy from Ripon. The exhibition was well-publicised and my Bilbo Baggins doll was sold to a friend of Martin Freeman. It was fun to work with friends and very kind of John Cockshaw to help Guy and I with this project, mentoring us with pricing and curation of our work. I hope to work with them again.

Assembly of Doll Makers Collective
I formed the Assembly of Doll Makers during COP3, establishing this group as a collective of doll makers interested in magic and fantasy. I have used this module to continue growing the group, sharing our work and planning new publications.
