Happy New Year! Welcome to 2015’s first edition of GIGS. We’re looking forward to another year of fantastic live jazz, and January gets us off to a fine start.

- How long has this group been together? I started up the Septet about two years ago as an outlet for my larger ensemble compositions – it’s now grown into a busy working band. We’ve completed one UK tour, and travelled as far as Italy, Switzerland and Tunisia playing my music. I’ve always been fascinated by the range of textures and different colours that are possible with four front line instruments (trombone, trumpet and two saxophones), and wanted to explore that in a regular group – now I know each musician incredibly well, so I can
We are releasing our debut CD Skyline on my own record label, Spark, which I’m setting up with drummer JJ Wheeler in order to focus on young, exciting new bands. My compositions are influenced by a wide range of music from folk and flamenco to New Orleans, with the Septet sometimes sounding as full as a big band and sometimes like a small chamber ensemble – always with melody at the heart of the tunes. The album is out on 2nd Feb 2015 and our London launch date is on 29th January at St James Studio near Victoria, to kick off the tour.
- What are your hopes for this tour and the future? On this string of dates we are touring to the North and Scotland for the first time, and I’m really looking forward to bringing the music to audiences who’ve never heard it before, as well as the inevitable musical evolution that happens during a tour. It’s a real luxury to be able to play the same music on consecutive nights with the same musicians, and I’m looking forward to it growing and changing as we do so. - What can audiences expect from one of your gigs? I’m really committed to touring the whole Septet despite the
obvious financial difficulties; by far the vast majority of touring groups are trios, quartets or quintets, and we’ve found that seeing seven musicians on stage is rare and unique for audiences. Because of the huge textural palette available in the group, our sets can be very diverse – expect striking melodies and colourful harmony alongside propulsive grooves, as well as seeing all seven of us trying to squeeze onto some very small stages!

Alex Garnett’s Bunch of Fives Saxophonist Alex Garnett tours his Bunch of Fives band through the UK to support his new Whirlwind Recordings album Andromeda (released 26 January 2015).
I love writing with each individual musician in mind, mostly because they are such good friends. It’s really a privilege to be able to spend so much time with them and I’m honoured that they will take time out of their busy schedules to play with the Septet. Each musician has a
