Welcome to Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017 Next year, Copenhagen Jazz Festival turns another page in Danish jazz history with the 40th anniversary edition of the festival, but the artistic ambitions are already turned up a notch starting at Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017. Even though the concerts with Herbie Hancock, Norah Jones, Jamie Cullum and Anoushka Shankar are already sold out, the list of international highlights is as broad and diverse as ever – Oumou Sangare, Bill Frisell, Eliane Elias, Omer Avital, Erykah Badu, Lee Konitz, Jan Garbarek, Saxophone Summit – and the list continues with a total of more than 1300 concerts in just 10 days! When it all comes down to it, Copenhagen Jazz Festival is comprised of in excess of 120 venues and organizers, and it is in their differences and diversity we see newfound rendezvous between artists and audiences. It is in the Concert Halls, the Jazz Clubs, the Open Air venues, theaters, churches, cafés, bars and all the special venues out there, embraced by the spirit of Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Jazz has come a long way since then, changing shape(s), challenging itself and producing all-pervading offshoots through the very foundation of modern music in the process. Over the course of 10 days, Copenhagen Jazz Festival presents hundreds of concerts all mirroring the first 100 years of jazz history while keeping an inquisitive eye towards the shape of jazz to come – presenting progressive artists pushing the boundaries of what jazz is all about. Copenhagen Jazz Clubs History without nostalgia Copenhagen’s buzzing jazz clubs are the driving force in the city’s long history as one of the jazz capitals of the world. Experience the intimate surroundings which continue to attract the hottest names in jazz to this very day Jazzhouse Jazzhouse offers a contemporary and cutting edge take on jazz and bordering genres on two stages. Jazzhouse is a place for experiments, constantly exploring the shapes of jazz to come, presenting underground artists as well as defining musical legends. Jazzhouse sees jazz as an open form of expression rather than a genre with a fixed set of rules. Here, you will find plenty of room for both acoustic jazz ensembles as well as free improvisation, avant-garde, folk and world music, experimental electronic sounds, alternative rock and even contemporary classical music.

Mark Guiliana, Ambrose Akinmusire, Marissa Nadler, Phronesis, Ed Askew, Tri4th La Fontaine La Fontaine is the oldest jazz venue in Copenhagen and is legendary for its nightly jam sessions. Throughout the years, some of the biggest stars in jazz have crossed paths with this small and intimate jazz bar in the heart of Copenhagen, performing in the informal surroundings. Almost 100 jazz lovers can enjoy the music in this iconic club which presents jazz all year round.

La Fontaine Jamsessions Montmartre Montmartre is Copenhagen’s historic jazz hot-spot, presenting world class live jazz at the

original venue at Store Regnegade 19A in the heart of the Danish capital. From 1959-1976, the club made jazz history as the European home for jazz giants Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Kenny Drew and many other masters of the 60’s and 70’s. In May 2010, the spectacular re-opening of Jazzhus Montmartre made news around the globe. Once again the world’s top jazz artists are flocking to the famous address.

Morten Lund, Jakob Bro, Thomas Morgan, Joey Baron, Jan Lundgren, Dena DeRose KoncertKirken Blågårds Kirke is situated in the heart of Nørrebro, Copenhagen, and is the first ConcertChurch in Denmark, able to be transformed into a unique venue suitable for all manner of concerts and performances. KoncertKirken is used by classical and rhythmic musicians, theater troupes and a range of other artists alike.

On Dog, Maluba Orchestra, Free Humans, Love Jazzcup At Jazzcup, right across the street from The King’s Garden, you can buy music and coffee and get a major live experience – all at the same time. Jazzcup is a combination of both record store, café and venue. It is part of JazzKlubben, an organisation with the purpose of being an ambassador for jazz music in Denmark. Jazzcup presents live concerts every Friday and Saturday, as well as every day during Copenhagen Jazz Festival.

I always tell any and all jazz fans I know when asked what my favorite international jazz festival is: Copenhagen Jazz Festival, of course! For the sheer expansiveness – regarding styles of jazz, show selection (customarily near a 1,000 every festival), variety of venues throughout the city and musicianship (much homegrown, Denmark arguably having the second most significant jazz history next to the US) – there’s really no comparison. Copenhagen Jazz Festival is a true treat to attend and absorb as much as you can, from the early afternoon (if not earlier) into the wee hours of the following day every day for almost two weeks straight.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival – round midnight As night falls on Copenhagen Jazz Festival, the many local and visiting musicians usually gather in their preferred hangouts, exchanging tall tales and loose jams in front of a festive audience – Macy Gray, Bill Frisell, Lady Gaga and many others have all been spotted jamming out after hours at places such as La Fontaine, Montmartre and Christiania. The festival can’t make any promises regarding attendance for obvious reasons, but be sure to check out these venues and jams if your festival nights don’t have a strict curfew – you might just find yourself caught up in jazz history!

Concert Hall Events Big Venues – Big Names The concert halls are among the most impressive venues at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, presenting the biggest stars in jazz and beyond in great acoustics to match DR Koncerthuset As you approach DR Koncerthuset, a fabulous sight greets you. Designed by the french architect Jean Nouvel, the blue frontage is monumental, yet airy, as if the building had been carved out of the sky. Events at Koncerthuset range widely in terms of size and genre: small-scale jazz concerts in the foyer, chamber music, choral works, rock and pop concerts in the three smaller concert halls and symphony concerts, guest appearances and large scale rhythmic concerts in the sizable concert hall. Major international artists such as Gregory Porter, Anoushka Shankar, Dianne Reeves, Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea and Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil have all performed here.

Herbie Hancock, Anoushka Shankar, Jamie Cullum, Mikkelborg / Lundin / Dahl / Ginman / Blachman, 100 Years of Ella Fitzgerald ”We Love You Madly” The Royal Playhouse The Royal Playhouse was inaugurated in February 2008 - and is the new national stage for the dramatic arts in Denmark. The new Playhouse is located beautifully on the waterfront of Copenhagen’s harbour and is already a designated city landmark, planned and projected for over 130 years. The new theatre has a large auditorium and stage, a grand waterfront foyer and a long promenade made of rural oak planks running alongside the building, connected to the main walkways into the city.

Tivoli Concert Hall An evening at the Tivoli Concert Hall is something unique. Not only can you experience a long list of the world’s musical stars and young talent, you also get admission to the Tivoli Gardens with any ticket purchase. Very few places can take pride in having a concert hall like Tivoli’s, located in the middle of a fairytale garden with flower beds, magical lights and sparkling fountains.

Jan Garbarek, Norah Jones, Caroline Henderson, Hanne Boel Amager Bio Amager Bio is one of the largest venues in Copenhagen and features up to 125 concerts a year. The venue’s musical profile is quite broad, varying from hard-core metal to the softest pop. Amager Bio values high quality rhythmic music like rock and blues as well as new electronic music – mostly Nordic. The old cinema is known for its high quality of sound and acoustics and an inviting interior to match.

The Queen’s Hall is the library’s beautiful concert hall, in which various concerts take place year round in the genres of classical and jazz. The concert hall is an official venue at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, but also hosts jazz concerts throughout the year. The concert hall is known for its unique acoustics and can host a crowd of 4-600 people.

Take a step off the beaten path Abandoned abattoirs and progressive churches – there is no lack of unusual and fascinating venues at Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Here is a small selection to help you get started on your adventure Kødbyen Kødbyen (The Meat Packing District, literally: The Meat City) on Vesterbro used to be home to Copenhagen’s meat industry businesses and still consists of three separate areas, referred to as the White, Grey and Brown ”Meat City” for the dominant colour of their buildings. In recent years, this has changed into a new creative cluster with a happening nightlife, excellent venues and a broad range of high quality restaurants. At Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017, the Meat Packing District is home to several venues including KB18, Barefoot Records at H15 and ILK at 5e as well as curated line-ups at the local marketplace, Kødbyens Mad & Marked, and at the nearby Husets Teater. Expect experiments and new ways of defining jazz.

Emanuele Maniscalco, Selvhenter, Jeppe Zeeberg, Kresten Osgood Skuespilhusets foyer The panoramic lobby at The Royal Danish Playhouse is home to a series of free concerts during Copenhagen Jazz Festival as well as this year’s official opening concert on July 7. Known collectively as 21st Century Jazz, the series’ accompanying artists are all immensely talented musicians and composers, approaching their craft with a historical sense of upheaval. Composition, avant-garde and premeditated experimentation are all keywords here, often joining forces with untamed improvisation to offer a rare glimpse at a multitude of musical futures.

classical musical profile. Brorsons Kirke is brand new venue at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, making a grand entrance by hosting the recurring concert theme Something Else. Named after legendary Ornette Coleman’s debut album from 1958, Something Else (re)presents a transformative melting pot of genres. In Brorsons Kirke you will get the chance to experience a series of progressive Danish acts performing in a perfectly round, 360 degree stage set-up.

Hess Is More, Coco O., Irah, Bisse, Bowie Instrumentals 1977-1979 LiteraturHaus LiteraturHaus is home to Denmark’s first live venue for literature. Here, in an abandoned and rustic church on Nørrebro, audiences may experience readings by writers, novelists and poets as well as listen to and participate in discussions about literature led by critics, scholars and writers. Throughout the year and especially during Copenhagen Jazz Festival, LiteraturHaus also offers its audience a chance to experience performing musicians in an intensely intimate setting. This year, LiteraturHaus serves as the host of the theme Wild at Heart – two nights of female performers and composers with an experimental edge.

Jacobsen, Cathrine Legardh Fringe Jazz Fest Giving the audience a unique experience of New Orleans culture, Fringe Jazz Fest presents more than 20 concerts at Pumpehusets Byhave during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017. The line-up consists of some of the best international and local music sharing roots in ”The Big Easy”, split across two stages – one outdoor, one indoor. Fringe Jazz Fest also presents a wide range of workshops, artist talks, jazz quizzes and other activities at this wholehearted celebration of all things New Orleans.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival celebrates historic relations with Japan This year’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival does not only mark the festival’s 39th edition. When the summer’s jazz festival kicks off on July 7, it also happens with an eye towards Japan. 2017 marks the first 150 years of diplomatic exchange between Denmark and Japan – a piece of history making its mark on several cultural events throughout the year both here and in Japan. At Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017 this manifests as a special Japanese theme, giving the audience a taste of both traditional Japanese music as well as some of the youngest contemporaries on the Japanese scene. The audience can look forward to concerts with groups such as Tri4th, invited by Tokyo Jazz, and improvisers MoGoToYoYo led by drummer Yasuhiro Yoshigaki. “I first visited Copenhagen in 2001, before launching Tokyo Jazz Festival. My visit was during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and the ambience of the festival and the city was a total “culture shock” to me. It was so amazing to find how people were enjoying jazz everywhere around the city at ease. The sky’s the limit Experience the unique atmosphere as jazz takes over Copenhagen’s historic streets, parks and plazas Jazz by the Sea / Kulturhuset Islands Brygge Jazz by the Sea is a recurring – as well as immensely popular – festival theme, where open air concerts are presented every night during the festival in the beautiful, maritime surroundings at Kulturhuset Islands Brygge. The concerts span both groups, ensembles and jazz vocalists from throughout the world and from the local Danish scene.

Youn Sun Nah, Sinne Eeg, New Jungle Orchestra, Eivør Pálsdóttir, Mathias Heise, Saxophone Summit Kongens Have Kongens Have is the oldest park in Copenhagen, existing for more than 400 years. Originally a private royal garden, today the park attracts approximately three million visitors every year, neighboured by the National Gallery of Denmark and the stunning Botanical Garden. Kongens Have is the biggest venue at Copenhagen Jazz Festival measured in both square meters and attendance, drawing spectacular crowds to its annual free concerts.

Buy tickets (or find free concerts)

The majority of concerts at Copenhagen Jazz Festival are paid admission, and you will need to buy tickets seperately, as no festival wristband covers the many differing venues with equally differing capacities. All official ticket providers can be found via the concerts at Jazz.dk. We encourage you to buy your ticket(s) in advance for all major/headlining concerts. Several hundred open air and afternoon concerts are free though, so make sure to make preparations via the official platforms.

Travel like the locals

The easiest way to get around in Copenhagen Jazz Festival is by bike and public transport, so leave the car at home and travel like the locals. In collaboration with the festival, The Public Transport of Copenhagen (Movia, Metro and DSB) offers a special Event-ticket, making the commute between the venues both cheap and easy. The ticket is delivered to you by mobile text message, is valid for 12 hours during the festival period and can be used in busses, trains and metro in the Greater Copenhagen Area.
