Brief 1: Ferens Open Exhibition
Deadline
16th Oct 16
Rationale: After completing my live painting for HSS, I found that making big painted work was something I really enjoy, and haven’t really had the time or space to do these past two years. I enjoy the notion of taking my personal small scale work and blowing it up larger. Public art is also something that interests me, making work that is accessible to the public is something I feel is very important. This brief allows me to free reigns in terms of WHAT artwork I make, but gives me live brief experience in meeting deadlines, presenting my work for approval and contact with galleries. If successful, the exposure and networking opportunities from having my work shown in Hull’s (City of Culture) gallery would be great. Brief 2: Artlink Print Show
Deadline
6th Nov 16
Rationale: I was asked very recently (29//9//2016) if I would like to partake in a print exhibition // pop up shop at Hull’s Artlink gallery. There would be a preview (11th Nov) night for publicity, and the works would be for sale until 10th December. The idea of the project is to get the public buying more printed products in the run up to Christmas. The gallery will take a 25% commission. This brief again offers the opportunity to professionally present my work and offers the opportunity for discussion with galleries. It would also allow me to play around with screen-print in the run-up to making these prints (something I really want to get good at this year) while allowing me some creative freedom. I’m still waiting on if there are any themes // guidelines ect for work submitted. Brief 3: Secret 7”
Deadline
Around 2nd March 2017
Rationale: I did this brief last year, and though I was really looking forward to it, it’s one I feel I didn’t complete the way I’d wanted to. Music illustration is something I’m really interested in, and I’d like to take forward some of the things I’ve learnt from OUIL505 into this live brief (and hopefully be more successful than last year!!). This brief offers the opportunity to submit my work to something competitive and relevant to the work I’d like to undertake post-grad. It’s also for a great cause (charity) and I’d like to make work that is socially conscious and gives back. Brief 4: CD Single a Week (Self-Initiated)
Deadline
Once a Week (Maybe until start of 2nd semester?)
Rationale: To build up the part of my practice focused on music illustration (album covers, gig posters, maybe even club nights???) I’d like to do a quick single cover a week. I’d chose a song from my “recommended for you” section of Spotify each week and produce one (front) album cover a week. I want this brief to be something quite quick (a few hours a week) using only analogue media (digital touch ups allowed of course) working to a set dimension (CD cover). I’d continue this through until maybe the first week (s) back of second semester? Maybe I’d continue it past then depending what I wanted to do with the final pieces? Lay them out in a book format to be viewed in? Or printed for an exhibition piece? This brief would require time management, as well as keep me making work continually throughout the year. Brief 5: Publication Brief (Self-Initiated)
Deadline
Dear Self 2; Nov 21st
Rationale: I spoke on my blog about wanting to do a publication brief this year, and though I reference to making one perhaps on the rave culture I investigated last year, I’d love to make a sequel of my ‘Dear Self’ zine. I already have some visual work I’ve been making in preparation for this throughout the year, as it’s a personal project I always anticipated making, I’d like to make some more work in preparation for its production however to make it something really great. Zines are something I’ve grown to love and being able to make more would really boost my practice up to what I WANT it to be this year. I love all things lo-fi and DIY, and this brief would allow me the time to revel in that. The construction and creation of Dear Self 2 would perhaps not take as long as I’ve already got material for it, so this project could be expanded to making other zines! Relatively quickly made, without laborious research like COP. As well as practicing something I enjoy, I would also be able to take these zines to sell on my online store, something I WILL build upon this year.
