Initial Work
Star%ng this project I knew I wanted to dip into the realm of 3D illustra%on. Ceramics and 3D work is something I’d briefly done during my founda%on year, since star%ng at LCA and finding prac%%oning illustrators who's work successfully translates into 3D, I knew this was something I wanted to revisit w h e n t h e % m e a l l o w e d . Focusing on product and packaging, I tackled this brief with my experience

in character and crea%ng emo%ve work. Once the fragile tone of voice had been set through the choice of music tracks, it was easier to create characters and illustra%ons that fit with this type of work. It was through repe%%ve drawing of the characters that I feel I was really able to get them to appear and evoke what I wanted them to; maintaining the endangered animal vulnerability with subtle anthropomorphic expressions.

Final Images
CraSing the final images was something I really enjoyed. The gestures and posi%ons of each character could not have worked without the 2D illustra%ve work that came before it. Deconstruc%on of shape and form allowed me to manipulate each animal in a way that expressed humanis%c emo%ons without seeming too human in form.

Colour choice for the backgrounds of each image was also important, and addi%on of digitally rendered visual informa%on allowed for GIFs to be made from the original pieces of artwork. In an applica%on seUng, looking to moving artwork was something that was important to me as it allowed me to inves%gaye the future applica%ons of illustra%on and not just the preexis%ng ones.

Evalua%on OUIL505 has been by far the most enjoyable module I’ve undertaken this year. The freedom to self ini%ate your own brief allowed me to explore an element of illustra%on I haven’t previously had the %me to; 3D. There have been some difficul%es at parts regarding tone of voice and context at the the start of the module, but I feel now that the work I have produced for both final imagery and applica%on is some of the best I’ve made this year so far. One of the hardest things I’ve found myself struggling with this module was finding a context I really wanted to put my work in. Star%ng the brief I proposed puUng my work in a gallery format with maybe a commercial element to it. Having looked at prac%oners like CharloHe Mei and Rosie Brand who oSen host their own exhibi%ons as well as taking part in collabora%ve illustra%on installa%ons, the no%on of a self driven exhibi%on really appealed to me. However in this context I found myself struggling, and I think this was largely due to me trying to undertake too much at once. I wanted a part exhibi%on – part album launch, that looking back now could have been feasible, but at the %me was far too complex. I struggled with apply my illustra%ons appropriately as I didn’t have a clear consumer demographic in mind. Once this demographic had been established as music fans for a commercial album launch, the applica%on of my images became a lot easier. The rela%onship between 2D and 3D illustra%on is also something that has been a learning curve this module. Realizing how much one can inform and posi%vely improve the other is something I will take with me into future projects, even if they’re not par%cularly 3D based. Taking my work into a new media and direc%on allowed me to see image making in ways that I may previously not have done. The clay allowed me to push shape in a way that was three dimensional and thus showed more accurate results quicker. Looking at the 3D models I’d made allowed me to have a beHer understanding of the shape and body of each character, so the subsequent 2D illustra%ons and plans were more accurate in what they were depic%ng. Evalua%on Another definite posi%ve of this module is how much more confident it has made me in the value and possibili%es of my illustra%ons. Mock ups and appropriate applica%ons allowed me to see me work as a collec%on that felt viable. Crea%ng a collec%on // campaign out of my illustra%ons made for a mental transi%on from hobbyist to professional, and while I feel my design boards could be more refined, it’s rewarding to see final illustra%ons presented in a way that feels prac%ced. As with a few of my modules this year, blogging has been weak in terms of how I’ve %me managed it. I feel as though because I let a few modules slip up in terms of blogging, subsequently the rest did too. Though I feel proficient in how I’ve explained and documented my blog, the %me management and regular maintenance of it is something I really need to lock down moving into Level 6.
