EVALUATION REPORT JAZZ IN THE PARK 2019
This is probably the happiest foreword I’ve ever written in my life. I’m not gonna lie, there are many reasons for it. For once, it’s been the best Jazz in the Park edition so far, there’s no doubt about it. We’ve broken all records: highest-attended concert we’ve ever had, best concerts we’ve ever had, the park looked beautiful, we’ve raised a lot of money for our community involvement and so on. Also, the weather helped us like never before. I’m not gonna lie, after what happened last year (9 rainy days out of 11), it’s pretty hard to mobilize yourself and invest even more than you did in the previous year, hoping that you will be luckier for the next edition. But we did and we were lucky and all the stars aligned in probably the best event Fapte has ever made. The funniest thing is that this happened right in this year. You see, it’s almost impossible not to compare yourself with other festivals, both in your niche and beyond. And there are many projects around us that we can compare to. This was the year when we actually stopped doing this. We swore to ourselves that the only ones we are going to compete with are us. We made a promise to do the best that we can with this festival, regardless of what others are doing. This year, Jazz in the Park showed that it’s a mature festival, one worth going to. We’ve shown that there is a future for jazz. And the most important thing is that we enjoyed the whole process. Of course, there are many things that we can improve, but if there weren’t what will have become of us by next year? Thanks to all of you, partners, crew and volunteers, for being there, for trusting us and for contributing to what has probably become the most important jazz festival in the country. As for us, we’ve just grown our appetite for more. So we invite you to see the facts and stats of Jazz in the Park 2019 and follow us for our next projects!

FESTIVAL TO INTRODUCE REUSABLE CUPS
HEARTFELT MOMENTS Jazz in the Park is not just about numbers. It is about experiences, about people coming to discover great music and to enjoy their time with friends and loved ones. It is about memories you can take home at the end of the day. Here are some things about Jazz in the Park #7 that we will remember for a long time.
#1 MORE THAN 8000 PEOPLE SINGING TOGETHER WITH THE LEGENDARY MARCUS MILLER This is certainly an experience that gives you goosebumps. Marcus Miller had the whole crowd at his fingertips, and the result was overwhelming.
#2 NONE OTHER THAN THE AMAZING ROBERT “SPUT” SEARIGHT ASKED FOR A JAZZ IN THE PARK CREW T-SHIRT And we gave it to him, wrapped up in all our admiration. Just imagine this: you’re sitting on Vorbe’s terrace waiting for the jam session to begin, when Robert Searight comes to you. You begin to chat as if you’re old friends and, out of nowhere, he says: ‘Woa, that T-shirt is really nice. Can I have one?’. Yes, Sir, you can totally have it!
#3 SEEING JUDITH HILL’S BAND PRAY BEFORE THE CONCERT
#4 MALOX BEING AT THEIR CRAZIEST
Judith Hill performs on stage with her parents as well, which made this even more emotional. They were all sitting together in a small circle, holding hands and praying in the backstage. It was maybe one of the most intimate moments that we unintentionally witnessed.
That concert was definitely one to remember. When Eyal Talmudi came down from the stage and literally in the middle of the crowd, everyone went mad in the best way possible. It was fantastic!
#5 WATCHING OUR ART DIRECTOR PERFORM WITH HIS NEW BAND, ZIMBRU
#6 THE GREAT FEEDBACK WE’VE RECEIVED FROM ARTISTS
#7 HAVING A FRIENDLY COMMUNITY THAT LIVES UP TO OUR ECO-PRINCIPLES
When Paul, our Art Director, is not working for Jazz in the Park’s visual identity and for other creative projects, he’s in the rehearsal room with his dream pop, indie band: Zimbru. Their first festival concert was right on our Alternative Stage, and then they went on conquering other festivals as well. Apart from the bass drum breaking on stage (which made us all more nervous than emotional), it was a great experience.
Hearing artists, some of which are international legends already, say that they want to return to your festival makes you feel like all the work, the stress, the sleepless nights, every effort you made to get things going, in the end, are totally worth it.
Seeing that, all throughout the festival, the park stays clean and people do their best to collect garbage selectively and to reuse as much as they can gives you quite a rewarding feeling.

JAZZ IN THE PARK
MAIN STAGE Powered by Staropramen, our Main Stage is the perfect place for every jazz lover. From classic jazz to funk, you can find at least one band that will sweep you off your feet. And this year has been no exception. We’ve had the best lineup so far, headlined by artists like Marcus Miller, Judith Hill, Ghost-Note, Shai Maestro Trio, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio and Tiny Fingers. We’ve also had our highest-attended concert ever, with more than 8000 people coming to see the great Marcus Miller perform on July 4th. If we were to describe this edition in three words, they would be: diversity, amazement, and loads-ofgroove.
Number of concerts: 12
Average number of spectators / day: 6.000
LineUp: SHAI MAESTRO TRIO MARCUS MILLER Active days: THE B-GROOVE JULY 4-7 2019 HRISTO YOTSOV: JAZZ CATS IORDACHE GHOST-NOTE MARU RON MINIS TINY FINGERS FRANKIEZ EXPERIMENT & TEREZA CATAROV DELVON LAMARR ORGAN TRIO JUDITH HILL
ALTERNATIVE STAGE This is where the craziness takes place. Powered by Mega Image, the Alternative Stage is designed to bring forward bands that might not be as popular as the ones performing on the Main Stage, but, yet again, they’re so special they cannot go unnoticed. Testing the limits of jazz music by combining it with lots of other elements and genres, bands like Malox, Alaska Snack Time, Ours Samplus or Festen, just to name a few, have brought their passion into the game. The Alternative Stage is, therefore, especially designed for the curious ones, the ones who want to challenge their tastes and perceptions of music, the ones who are ready to step into a completely different musical experience.
Number of concerts: 9 LineUp: ZIMBRU NOYA RAO MALOX OURS SAMPLUS FESTEN CHASSOL MING FRAKTALE ALASKA SNACK TIME
Average number of spectators / day: 3000 Active days: JULY 5-7 2019
MIDNIGHT STAGE This is the first year that we’ve implemented the Midnight Stage and we can say it has a lot of potential. Situated in front of the Casino building, it creates the vibe of an open-air amphitheatre, where more intimate concerts can take place. This year, the lineup was quite diverse, with bands and artists from Poland, Romania and even South Korea.
Number of concerts: 4 LineUp: DSM CONTEMPORARYJAZZ GROUP BOGDAN VAIDA KOSMIC BLUES PIANOHOOLIGAN Average number of spectators / day: 1000 Active days: JULY 4-7 2019
JAM SESSIONS and other concerts It is already well known that we like to end every day of the festival with a jam session where artists and their audience can interact in a more unconventional way. And every single time, the atmosphere is absolutely amazing!
Venues: VORBE COLIN’S GASTRO PUB SAMSARA
But, besides the main schedule and the jam sessions, we’ve also had surprise concerts in Samsara and in the Central Park of Cluj-Napoca, where people could enjoy the music of DSM Contemporary Jazz Group and Ours Samplus.
Average number of spectators / day: 250 Active days: JULY 4-7 2019
MUSICAL ACTIVITIES Apart from concerts, we focused on other activities that would bring people closer to music, such as:
YAMAHA DRUM CAMP This has been one of the most wanted interactive corner during the festival. Anyone willing to learn how to play drums, regardless of their age, found their place in the Drum Camp, where a professional instructor would teach them the basic rhythms and make them play along by the end of the course.
THE MUSIC BAZAAR The best area for music lovers. People could either buy their favorite vinyls out of over 15.000 amazing vinyls brought by Fonoteca Paradis, or test different Yamaha musical instruments and jam around alone or with others. Not once we’ve had spontaneous concerts in the Casino building.
ESTELIO AUDITION ROOM Here’s where people could listen to a jazzy playlist on one of the newest Acoustic Density audio systems. And you know what’s the best thing? The room was perfectly soundproof, thus turning what could be a nice auditioning experience into a fantastic one.
OTHER ACTIVITIES Jazz in the Park is a place where music feels at home, but it’s also a place where the festival community can enjoy many other activities, such as:
THE READING CORNER It’s nice to pay forward books that changed your perspective on the world and left a mark on your heart. Together with Diverta, we created a place where people could donate their special books, which would later on be offered to school libraries and old-age asylums.
THE KIDS ZONE Kids had a lot of fun at the festival too, we’re totally sure of that. That’s because we created special areas, full of color and joy, where they could play for as long as they want and learn a bunch of new stuff at the same time.
THE VINTAGE FAIR Local designers, a passion for handmade things, authentic products, attention to details and great stories - this is what we brought together in our vintage area.
THE FOOD COURT Music, food and drinks have always gotten along together. Our secret, however, lies in perfectly combining these three elements, which turned the seventh edition of Jazz in the Park into an unforgettable harmony of the senses.
THE CHILL ZONE Hammocks, blankets, bean bags and relaxation - these words could best describe the chill areas of the festival, which turned out to be the perfect embodiment of our main theme: #timeforfriends.
THE JAZZ IN THE PARK FUND The main purpose of the Jazz in the Park Fund is to create a festival community that becomes actively involved in the cultural landscape of the city. Ever since we’ve started this journey, the concerts taking place in Central Park have been access free for everybody. But even so, we’ve given people the opportunity to support our initiatives by buying a non-mandatory ticket that would later on finance several artistic projects. This year, together with Mega Image, we have promoted the Fund’s message both online and offline and the festival community answered in the best way possible. More than 4000 people have donated for the Jazz in the Park Fund, thus helping us raise 18.000 EUR and finance three different cultural projects:
THE CULTURAL VOUCHER initiated by the Cluj Cultural Centre
ART THERAPY by Create.Act.Enjoy
DRAMA 5 residencies of creative writing, by REACTOR de creaţie și experiment
The Central Park of ClujNapoca is one of the most incredible sites, with a lot of artistic potential, which is why, for the seventh edition of Jazz in the Park, we’ve invited artists to dress it up with interactive installations. Out of 36 applicants, four have been selected to let their imagination run free:
GLIMPSE by Silviu Ciora
SWING – INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION by Alessandro Lupi
LUCY IN THE PARK WITH DIAMONDS by Atmosfera
GIANT STEPS by Prototip Studio
THE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ IN THE PARK COMPETITION The Jazz in the Park Competition aims to promote and discover young jazz projects, especially Romanian ones. This year, the competition had two main sections:
THE OPEN AIR SECTION
THE OPEN AIR SECTION
taking place in Iulius Parc between 4-5th of May

THE
PARTNERS
STAROPRAMEN Staropramen has been the main partner of the festival since 2015 and has helped us during the years not just by associating their brand with ours, but also by investing in our content and our communication campaign. This year, they adopted the main stage, they were present in all bars and they had a drumming activation, involving both demonstrations and try-outs for the people. Aslo, with their help, we produced reusable glasses for the festival, this way being more eco-friendly.
BCR GEORGE PLATFORM Their fifth presence at the festival involved a new brand that BCR is promoting: George, their intelligent banking app. They had a cool relaxation corner, very colorful, both appealing to adults and kids, and they gave away free cotton candy to everybody that tried out the app. Also, with BCR’s help, people were able to pay with credit cards at all of our bars.
MEGA IMAGE The newest retail company in Cluj-Napoca has been with Jazz in the Park ever since they opened their first store in the city, back in 2017. This year, Mega Image adopted both the Alternative Stage of the festival and the Jazz in the Park Fund. Their corner had relaxing spaces and also the possibility to drink a fresh or eat some fruits.
ENEL This year, we said “Welcome to the Jazz in the Park Family!” to a new main partner: Enel, the biggest private electricity provider in the country. They helped us build the coolest entrance gate we’ve ever had. Also, their brand activation consisted in a charging point and other fun and relaxing decor pieces.
DAISLER PRINT HOUSE They have been with us since the very beginning, offering their support. Almost every material you see our name on, from the tiniest brochure to the biggest banner, is printed by Daisler Print House. And we’re so grateful for that.
THE
PARTNERS
DUNHILL & GLO If you were looking for some of the nicest lounges to chill with friends during the festival, Dunhill & Glo have totally been among them. Added to their nice vibe, Glo brought another entertaining activity in the game this year: the Upbeat and Refreshed Perspectives @Jazz in the Park, a photo challenge with daily prizes
YAMAHA This year, Yamaha turned Jazz in the Park into a time for learning. Their Drum Camp was one of the activities that people were crazy about. Added to this, they joined Acoustic Density and Fonoteca Paradis for what was an amazing Music Bazaar, where people could test Yamaha instruments, jam around and learn new stuff about music.
BDG - JACK DANIELS We welcomed BDG, our new spirits partner, that brought famous brands like Jack Daniels, Botanist, Finlandia or Jagermeister in the festival. Also, they prepared some cool cocktail bars throughout the parc.
SCHWEPPES The Coca Cola Company is another new addition to our partner list this year. They promoted their tonic water brand, Schweppes, and also provided all the soft drinks of the festival. Their brand activation consisted in a lounge where people could buy different cocktails based on Schweppes.
THE
PARTNERS
TOHANI For the second year in a row, Tohani was the official wine brand of the festival. Together with them, we arranged a small wine area with a stage, a large variety of wine and prosecco, cheese and good vibes.
ACOUSTIC DENSITY Our aim was to promote as much music related content in the festival as we could, so Acoustic Density had to be there. They are the only local producer of Hi-Fi sound equipment. Together with them, we prepared a black room, completely soundproof, where people could experience music and sounds at their finest.
CARCLOUD They were this year’s provider of local transport for the artists of the festival. Also, during the festival, they promoted their car fleet and their car buying services.
MARTY The biggest restaurant chain in the city provided meals for our artists & crew, but also had a food stand in the park, selling the best burgers and cheesecakes.
SAMSARA They are the only true vegetarian and vegan restaurant in the city, daring to show people a new way to eat and take care of yourself. They were the vegetarian food providers of the festival.
ENDAVA This year, Endava, one of the largest IT companies in Cluj, adopted the Jazz in the Park International Competition. During the events, they offered participants beautiful experiences and memories, with their photo stand and the zipline over the lake.
THE
PARTNERS BETFAIR Ever since they started sponsoring Jazz in the Park, Betfair has always promoted their in-house crowdfunding campaign, called Walking Month. This time, at Jazz in the Park, they have built some cool spaces to sit and rest.
ZUZU Tasty milkshakes, a good time for kids and a chill time for youngsters - that’s how you could define the Zuzu area. It was a place where people could play ball games, enjoy the hippie swing set or simply relax on the colorful bean bags and enjoy the fest vibe.
MOBILADALIN We’re happy that MobilaDalin joined us for this year’s edition as well. Their comfy sofas have equipped the backstage for both our Main and Alternative stages, and people could borrow their lovely blankets and find a favorite spot in the park to relax.
NARCOFFEE If there’s one thing that keeps us going in the morning, that’s coffee. We’ve had Narcoffee to join us for another year, and their tasty caffeine based products and the cozy area were a joy to every participant in the festival, from spectators to staff members.
HOCHLAND They had one of the coziest areas in the park. Situated a bit further away from the main alley, this area was perfect for people to lay down and relax, without being bothered by the crowd noise. They could also try out and even buy some tasty types of cheese.
FARMEC
PETIT BEBE
THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES
We love it when local brands join forces with a local festival. Farmec is one of them. This year, they promoted their new personal care products for men, in a brand activation that involved a lot of fun and VR games.
The place to be for tiny babies and their parents. Petit Bebe created a beautiful area where parents could spend time with their toddlers or rent strollers and baby carriers for free, to walk with their little ones through the park during the festival.
Ever since the beginning of the festival, we had the support of the local authorities, receiving each year grant for the implementation process and free access in required venues, as well as free advertising spaces.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS JAZZ IN THE PARK ACTIVE MEMBERS OF EUROPEAN JAZZ NETWORK
Since 2018, Jazz in the Park joined the largest Jazz network in the world, representing Romania in international collaboration projects. Also, being a member of EJN has actively brought us international exposure, access to artists and festival development programs. Collaboration with embassies and cultural institutes:
POLISH INSTITUTE

DUTCH INSTITUTE
HUNGARIAN INSTITUTE
ROMANIA - FRANCE SEASON
We all want to live in an environment that’s clean and feels cozy. This is one of Jazz in the Park’s main purposes: to encourage an attitude that’s more careful towards nature.
JAZZ IN THE PARK IS ECO
WHAT DO WE DO ON THIS MATTER? • • •
We use reusable cups in the whole festival perimeter. We use tree huggers all across the hammock area. We collect garbage waste selectively.
•
At the end of every edition, we replant grass on the affected areas in the park (this year, for example, we replanted 1000 square metres of grass).
MERCHANDISE Our official shop was definitely something to look forward to this year. We’ve had all kinds of creative stuff, from agendas to personalised T-shirts and hoodies, and people absolutely loved them. Not only you could buy the already-branded Jazz in the Park accessories, but you could also choose templates and colours to create your own bag or T-shirt and wear them with pride. Cluj-Napoca, big thanks for having us! It was an unforgettable experience to take part in such an innovative and open-minded festival as Jazz in the Park is. We hope to see you again some day!
FRAKTALE
(PL)
Being at Jazz in the Park 2019 is one amazing thing, but the main reason I decided it was worth the fun going with my girls is that Judith Hill is their favorite singer. I say it’s not bad to like Judith Hill at 4 and 5 years respectively. Not bad at 29 or 41 either, right? Well, the concert was incredible, and it looks like Delvon Lamarr was great too. Flawless organization, guys!
A HAPPY SPECTATOR
It’s absolutely amazing! The venue is great, the atmosphere is really cool. All these trees and nature and stuf f. And it was so nice that we were on stage performing and we couldn’t see the end of the crowd. That’s fantastic, man, we’re so happy to be here. Thanks for having us!
GHOST-NOTE
Among the wonders that we find in life and across the world, there’s one thing more that I deeply appreciate: things that are well done. And especially things that are done from one’s heart. I’m leaving Jazz in the Park with memories of that kind.
ANOTHER HAPPY SPECTATOR
Wow, what a crowd! We played so hard we broke the bass drum pedal. Nobody told me jazz could be so heavy. Thank you, Romania! Thank you, Jazz in the Park!
